Ottawa Unveils New Tourist Destination: National Holocaust Monument

The Holocaust was the mass extermination of over six million Jews and millions of other victims, and one of the darkest chapters in human history. The National Holocaust Monument unveiled today in Ottawa, Canada, commemorates the millions of people who suffered such atrocities at the hands of the Nazi regime, and pays tribute to those whose stories must never be forgotten.

Canada’s Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, today inaugurated the National Holocaust Monument in Ottawa. The monument serves to honor the victims and survivors of the Holocaust, and the important lessons it so painfully taught us.
The monument also stands as a testament to the resilience and courage of Holocaust survivors. Many found a home in Canada, and profoundly shaped our country and society.
In honoring the victims of the Holocaust, we recognize their humanity, which no human act can erase. The National Holocaust Monument reminds us that it is our collective and vital responsibility to stand against anti-Semitism, racism, and hatred, and to bring meaning to the solemn vow, “never again.”
“This monument, so close to our Parliament and Supreme Court, is a reminder of the devastating cost of allowing hatred and tyranny to overcome openness, inclusion, and freedom. Today we reaffirm our unshakeable commitment to fight anti-Semitism, racism, xenophobia, and discrimination in all its forms, and we pay tribute to those who experienced the worst of humanity. We can honor them by fighting hatred with love, and seeking always to see ourselves in each other,” said Rt. Honorable Justin Trudeau, Prime Minister of Canada.
The Honorable Mélanie Joly, Minister of Canadian Heritage, said: “This monument is a powerful tribute to the millions of Jewish men, women and children and other victims whose lives were extinguished during one of the darkest chapters in human history. As we reflect and honor their memory, we also pay tribute to the courage and strength of the survivors who came to Canada following the Holocaust. Their stories are a powerful reminder of our responsibility to stand against anti-Semitism and prejudice in all its forms and to never allow intolerance and hate to take root in our communities. We will never forget.”

New York Distilling Company Proclaims New York Rye Week, October 16th-22nd.

NYDC Family.jpg

New York, NY - In association with the New York State Assembly, New York Distilling Company proclaims the launch of New York Rye Week.
To celebrate the historic grain’s thriving cultivation in New York State, the annual event will commence on Monday, October 16th - Sunday, October 22nd, 2017 with a succession of new initiatives.

As part of the week, New York Distilling Company will simultaneously launch the Wild Rye Rumpus, a four-day festival where local farmers, chefs, distillers, bartenders, brewers, politicians and enthusiasts will gather for a series of dynamic rye-focused events.

From Thursday, October 19th through Sunday, October 22nd, New York Distilling Company will host the series, which will open with an invitation-only panel discussion followed by a selection of ticketed events that include guided whiskey tastings, seminars with special guest speakers and a rye marketplace. A highlight of the festivities will be the premier of the new Empire Rye whiskey bottlings, where the Empire Rye association, which formed in 2015, will unveil some of their individual expressions to the public for the first time. The final day of the festival will culminate in a rye-fed pig roast buffet with live entertainment to close.

Rye has long been recognized as an underdog grain but in recent years, New York State distillers have embraced its versatile properties. Mirroring it’s long-enjoyed popularity in Europe, the rye upswing has welcomed an abundance of new and diverse products in food and drink, led by New York Distilling Company with the recent release of its two rye expressions Ragtime Rye and Mister Katz’s Rock & Rye.

Speaking of the upcoming launch, Allen Katz, Co-Founder of New York Distilling Company and a pioneer of the trend said “We could not be more excited to be hosting the First Annual New York Rye Week. It is the ideal moment in the evolution of cocktail culture and interest in distilled spirits to celebrate America's resolute and original whiskey, and to taste so many of the great ryes from New York and around North America.”

Wild Rye Rumpus events will be open to the public from Friday, October 10th - Sunday, October 22nd. Multi-day tickets are available for $100 and can be purchased along with individual event tickets via the New York Distilling Company website from Friday, September 1st. Image result for 2018 PHS Philadelphia Flower Show To Explore “Wonders of Water”

From rainforests to rain gardens, exhibits to showcase beauty and environmental issues

The 2018 PHS Philadelphia Flower Show, “Wonders of Water,” will celebrate the beauty and life-sustaining interplay of horticulture and water, on March 3 to 11, 2018, at the Pennsylvania Convention Center.

America’s leading floral and garden designers will create tropical jungles, temperate forests, native woodlands and arid landscapes, showcasing the astounding plants that thrive in each environment, from exquisite orchids and flowering vines to luminescent desert blooms.

Guests will enter the show under a canopy of exotic flowers, and marvel at a modernistic, multi-level bamboo waterfall. An ever-shifting rain curtain will guide guests over a “suspended” rope bridge, and through a brilliant green rainforest. “We want to capture all the sensory elements of the rainforest – it's fantastic colors, scents and sounds -- and demonstrate its unique and vital role in purifying water and sustaining our environment,” explained Sam Lemheney, PHS Chief of Shows & Events.

Special features of the 2018 Flower Show will explore innovative ways green infrastructure is used to protect and conserve our water sources. The William Penn Foundation has awarded a major grant to the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society to build an exhibit that illuminates how plant systems cleanse and sustain the Delaware River Watershed through mountains, fields, marshes and streams, and to convene a “Water Summit” at the Flower Show that engages leading environmental and industry experts from throughout the U.S. on freshwater issues and real-world solutions.

Gardeners of all skill levels will find water-wise concepts, including rain gardens and xeriscaping, plant-your-own experiences, and ideas they can use in their own home environment, from small urban spaces to expansive landscapes.

A new attraction, “America’s Backyard,” will offer smart ideas for outdoor living and conservation tips for the home garden. Guests can create their own mini-water garden in the “Make & Take” workshop, and interact with the delicate inhabitants of “Butterflies Live.” Special evening events will include the black-tie Preview Party and Flowers After Hours, a lively opening night dance party amid the exhibits.

The Flower Show brings together thousands of plant lovers who compete for blue ribbons in the Hamilton Horticourt. Their contributions to the Show, together with thousands of volunteers who help create this beauty in the middle of winter, are what make the Philadelphia Flower Show an attraction without peer. These efforts and ticket proceeds support the PHS mission to connect people with horticulture and create beautiful, healthy and sustainable communities.

Immerse yourself in the “Wonders of Water” in March 2018.

Travelore Tips: A Guide To Airline Baggage Fees And Policies

Airline baggage fees have been around for years. Yet, somehow, they still cause confusion and, for some, some budget surprises. However, savvy travelers can plan ahead, and possibly even save, if they dig into the fine print from the airlines. What is the cost for one or more bags? Do I have to factor in weight and size limitations? Does it cost more to bring one heavy bag or two lighter bags? Do I have to pay for skis or car seats? What are the baggage fees and policies for flying international vs domestic? What will fees add to the cost of my flight?
To help travelers get a better handle on this tricky aspect of flying, the travel experts at Cheapflights have compiled Check mate: A guide to airline baggage fees and policies.
As part of its research, Cheapflights polled 400 Americans and Canadians and found that 66% prefer to carry on their luggage for domestic flights, perhaps reflecting that bag fees are shaping travel habits.
When it came to international flights, however, people were almost evenly divided with 49.5% preferring to carry on their luggage and 50.5% preferring to check it.
In terms of how much to pay, among those polled, 41% of travelers felt it appropriate to pay $25 or less to check baggage.
A slightly smaller group (38% of travellers) were comfortable paying $50 or less, while 14% were willing to pay up to $75 to check their bags and only 7% were willing to pay as much as $100 to check their bags for a flight.
The range of responses to the survey fit with the wide range of rules for the airlines. From total baggage allowances to weight limits to different policies for domestic flights (in the airlines’ home country) to international flights, there’s a lot to know and understand for each airline. Here are a few key takeaways:
Second Bag Flies Free
For those who really want freedom from checked bag fees, check out these airlines that not only offer the first checked bag for free on both domestic and international flights but in fact offer a second checked bag for free.
1. Air India
2. All Nippon Airways
3. Emirates
4. Japan Airlines
5. Southwest Airlines
Other airlines, such as Etihad, Aurigny Air Services, Eva Airways, Malaysia Airlines, Singapore Airlines and Thai Airways let passengers check 2 bags if the total weight is less than 66lbs (30kg). And Korean Airlines, Philippines Airlines, China Eastern and Turkish Airlines permit 2 checked pieces if the total weight is 44lbs (20kg) or less.
Hawaiian Airlines doesn’t charge for a second bag on international flights while Korean Air includes two free bags on domestic flights if the combined weight doesn’t exceed 44lbs (20kg).
The Carry-On Club
Some airlines take their à la carte pricing model to the extreme, including only a personal item that fits under your seat as part of the price of the ticket. If you want to bring a larger carry-on, these airlines will add these charges:
1. Allegiant Air – US$15-$25 (depending on destination)
2. Frontier Airlines – US$30-$35
3. Spirit Airlines – US$35
4. Wow Airlines – US$20-$40

Beijing-Shanghai High-Speed Railway Is Once Again World’s Fastest Train

The new bullet train operating between Shanghai and Beijing has broken the speed record for a passenger service by traveling at 350 kilometers per hour (kph).
The Beijing-Shanghai high-speed railway once again became the world’s fastest train after it being limited to 300 kph six years age, reports China Daily.
The train called Fuxing, or rejuvenation in Chinese, offers features such as power outlets, USB ports, and free WiFi.
“These trains are so popular that the tickets for today’s services sold out a week ago,” Huang Xin, an official with China Railway Corporation (CR), said Thursday.
The railway connecting the Chinese capital in the north with the major business hub in the south sees about 100 million passengers a year.
The new train completes the 1,200-kilometer journey in just under four-and-a-half hours. The previous generation of trains did it in six hours.
“The Beijing-Shanghai high-speed railway was built to the world’s highest standards, and the Fuxing trains were designed to run at a maximum speed of 350 kph. Operating the Fuxing on this route at a speed of 350 kph is without question in terms of safety, reliability, and comfort,” said Lu Dongfu, CR general manager.
China has sold its high-speed trains to Indonesia, Russia, Iran, and India, according to the daily.
Developers claim the Fuxing trains can be used in extreme climates, making them more competitive on the global market.

Travelore News: Uber Stripped Of London License, Plans To Appeal #UBER

Image result for Uber Stripped Of London License, Plans To Appeal

LONDON (Reuters) - London stripped Uber on Friday of its license to operate from the end of next week in a huge blow to the taxi service and 3.5 million users in one of the world’s wealthiest cities.
The capital’s transport authority said the Silicon Valley technology giant was not fit and proper to hold a private vehicle hire license and it would not be renewed when it expires on Sept. 30.
Uber, whose 40,000 drivers in London account for a third of private vehicles hired, said it would contest the decision and regulator Transport for London (TfL) will let it operate until the appeals process is exhausted.
”Uber’s approach and conduct demonstrate a lack of corporate responsibility in relation to a number of issues which have potential public safety and security implications,“ TfL said. ”TfL must also be satisfied that an operator is fit and proper to hold a license.
Specifically, TfL cited Uber’s approach to reporting serious criminal offences, background checks on drivers and software called Greyball that could be used to block regulators from gaining full access to the app.
“Transport for London and the Mayor have caved in to a small number of people who want to restrict consumer choice,” said Tom Elvidge, Uber’s general manager in London. “We intend to immediately challenge this in the courts.”
The loss of the license comes after a tumultuous few months for Uber, including a string of scandals involving allegations of sexism and bullying at the San Francisco-based start-up that forced out former CEO and co-founder Travis Kalanick.
Uber, which is valued at about $70 billion and whose investors include Goldman Sachs, has faced protests around the world for shaking up long-established taxi markets.
The taxi app has also been forced to quit several countries, including Denmark and Hungary, and faced regulatory battles in multiple U.S. states and around the world.

HATED BY CABBIES LOVED BY USERS

London’s traditional black cab drivers have attacked Uber, saying it has undercut safety rules and threatened their livelihoods. Uber has been criticized by unions and lawmakers too and been embroiled in legal battles over workers’ rights.
London police also complained in a letter published that Uber was either not disclosing, or taking too long, to report serious crimes including sexual assaults and this put the public at risk.
Uber said then its drivers passed the same rigorous checks as black cab drivers and it has always followed TfL’s rules on reporting serious incidents and it had a dedicated team that worked closely with London’s police.
London Mayor Sadiq Khan, a Labour politician who has criticized Uber in the past, said he backed the decision to reject its application for a new license.
“It would be wrong if TfL continued to license Uber if there is any way that this could pose a threat to Londoners’ safety and security,” he said.
Drivers of London’s black cabs, who have snarled up the city’s streets in protest at the app over the last few years, welcomed Friday’s decision.
“Their standards are not up to scratch,” said 71-year-old Walt Burrows, who has driven a black cab for 39 years. “The black cab is an iconic part of London. What you get with a black cab is a metered fare and you know you’re safe.”
Uber is likely to come under more fire next week when it appears in court to appeal a verdict that granted two of its drivers rights such as the minimum wage, the latest “gig economy” battle between firms lauding the flexibility enjoyed by self-employed drivers and unions accusing them of exploitation.
Uber has, however, announced a series of changes over the last few months to improve conditions for its drivers, including the introduction of in-app tipping and plans to increase some fees.
Alongside Uber’s drivers, some of London’s 3.5 million registered users expressed concern as to how TfL’s decision would affect their lives.
“It will definitely impact my life,” said 43-year-old event planner Rimi Char, who users the app at least once a week. “I have got used to the ease and cost effectiveness of using Uber and I’ve always had positive experiences.”
One of Uber’s British competitors in London, Addison Lee, is also awaiting a decision from TfL about a longer-term license. The company declined to comment on Friday.
