Good news for Chase Sapphire Reserve® cardholders: Your credit card will soon grant you access to several new, upscale airport lounges.
The credit card company recently opened a new Chase Sapphire Lounge by The Club at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport and revealed plans to open four additional lounges across the USA (including one that will open next month). These outposts will join Chase’s existing locations in Hong Kong International Airport, Boston Logan International Airport, and both New York’s LaGuardia Airport and John F. Kennedy International Airport.
“When we opened our first domestic lounge, we were clear that expanding our footprint and elevating the on-trip experience for our Sapphire Reserve cardmembers was a priority,” Dana Pouwels, the head of airport lounge benefits at Chase, said in a statement. “Our openings in Phoenix and San Diego, in addition to the expansion of lounge access in locations where our customers live and travel, continues along our goal of delivering this highly sought after benefit.”
Here’s what you need to know about Chase’s new and forthcoming lounges and how to access them.
Phoenix Sky Harbor Chase Sapphire Lounge by The Club
Chase quietly opened its newest outpost at Phoenix Sky Harbor airport on November 12. Measuring just over 3,500 square feet, it’s one of the brand’s smallest lounges. Even in that small footprint, however, it features a bar, a patio space, and artwork by local painters Matthew Kirk and Timmy Ham.
For food, guests have two options. They can serve themselves from a buffet area with snacks like tortilla chips and guacamole, mini ham and cheese sandwiches, and Rice Krispie treats, or they can visit the Airstream food truck, which turns out turkey wraps with avocado and salsa, buffalo cauliflower topped with blue cheese and scallions for lunch and dinner, plus breakfast tacos and overnight oats. The menu for the entire lounge was developed by Stephen Jones, a James Beard–nominated chef who helms the Larder & the Delta in Phoenix.
Coffee and espresso drinks from Arizona-based Press Coffee and a wine selection from New York retailer Parcelle are also available, along with beer, cocktails, flavored water, and soft drinks.
The lounge is located in Terminal 4 in the South 1 Concourse. It is now open from 4:30 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. daily.

San Diego Chase Sapphire Lounge by The Club
Chase will open its next lounge at San Diego International Airport on December 6, 2024. The 10,000-square-foot space will include a wellness area with private rest pods, on-demand digital meditations from wellness guru Devi Brown, and facials from skincare brand Face Haus. Cardholders can order complimentary à la carte menu items from Oscar’s Mexican Seafood, a local favorite restaurant, and beverages from California’s Groundwork Coffee.
The San Diego location will be in Terminal 2 West and will be open from 4:30 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. daily.
Additional Chase Sapphire Lounges by the Club
Additionally, Chase will open three more lounges in the coming years:
Philadelphia International Airport (PHL): Opening in early 2025 in the Terminal D/E Connector
Las Vegas Harry Reid International Airport (LAS): Opening in mid-2025 in the Terminal 1 C gates
Los Angeles International Airport (LAX): Opening date TBD in the Tom Bradley International Terminal
Beyond the various Chase lounges, Reserve cardholders will also now be able to access the roughly two dozen Air Canada Maple Leaf Lounges and Air Canada Cafes. Although most of the Air Canada Maple Leaf Lounges are in Canada, there are four in the United States: Los Angeles International Airport, San Francisco International Airport, LaGuardia Airport, and Newark International Airport. The caveat is that travelers must be flying with a Star Alliance member, such as United or Lufthansa, to gain entry into the Air Canada lounges.
How to access a Chase Sapphire Lounge by The Club
Travelers with a Chase Sapphire Reserve® Credit Card, a J.P. Morgan Reserve Card, or the Ritz-Carlton Credit Card can get into the lounges for free with an active Priority Pass. Non-Chase Priority Pass members are allowed one complimentary Chase lounge visit per calendar year; after that, they’ll have to pay $75 per person each visit.

Marriott Is Opening Another New All-Inclusive On The Island Of Barbados
Marriott’s all-inclusive footprint continues to grow. You can find an All-Inclusive by Marriott Bonvoy resort on just about every island in the Caribbean right now, from boutique beach hotels to larger luxury resorts (including the lovely new Almare that just debuted on Isla Mujeres).
Now, Marriott is expanding in Barbados again. The new Royalton CHIC Barbados, whose planned opening we just reported on earlier this month, will be joining Marriott’s Autograph Collection, Caribbean Journal has learned. That also means it will be redeemable on points for Bonvoy members.
Royalton CHIC will be one of just four CHIC-branded resorts in the Caribbean, joining existing properties in destinations like Antigua, Punta Cana and Cancun. CHIC is an “elevated” adults-only concept, with a higher price point and a more exclusive feel than the traditional Royalton resort.
Tamarind by Elegant Hotels, one of several Marriott all-inclusive resorts on the island of Barbados.
It will have 220 rooms, all suites, with a mix of rooms ranging from swim-ups to ocean-view units.
And yes, it will also have a Diamond Club, parent company Blue Diamond’s higher-level resort-within-a-resort concept (akin to Preferred Clubs and the like at other resorts) that comes with special amenities including butler service.
The Royalton CHIC Barbados will also have 12 different dining concepts, including a rooftop bar the company says is inspired by a similar outlet at its Cancun resort.
The Marriott move is only strengthens the “unique energy and sophistication of Royalton Resorts on one of the Caribbean’s most beloved islands,” Blue Diamond President Jordi Pelfort said in a statement provided to Caribbean Journal.
Royalton has not yet released pricing for the property, which is slated to open its doors in the spring of 2026.
As a point of comparison, the Royalton Antigua, which just opened over the summer, has rooms at about $535 per night. You can probably expect that to be slightly higher in Barbados.
It will be the seventh Marriott all-inclusive in Barbados, joining six other properties from the Elegant portfolio: Treasure Beach, Tamarind, Waves, The House, Turtle Beach and Crystal Cove. We’ve stayed at all six of them, and they’re all excellent in different ways. We’re rather partial to The House for its intimate feel (and champagne breakfasts).

These new domestic routes enhance opportunities for Canadians to explore the country along with increased access to connect onwards to WestJet's vast network of global destinations, through its global hub in Calgary.
Sudbury, Ontario: Bringing two-times weekly service to the largest metropolitan area in Canada currently without WestJet operations, the airline is opening a highly-anticipated gateway for Northern Ontario communities to connect to Western Canada for business and leisure getaways this summer.
Sydney, Nova Scotia: In alignment with WestJet's strategy, the airline continues to strengthen its seamless connectivity between Atlantic and Western Canada, with the addition of two-times weekly service between Sydney and Calgary.
Anchorage, Alaska: Launching two-times weekly service between Calgary and Anchorage, Canadians connecting via the airline's hub, will gain coveted seasonal access to Alaska's incredible recreational landscapes and popular cruise opportunities.
Raleigh-Durham, North Carolina: Providing three-times weekly access between Calgary and one of the fastest-growing U.S. cities, WestJet will give Western Canadians seamless access to a thriving business hub, home to leading companies in healthcare, education and technology.
Salt Lake City, Utah: In addition to providing non-stop access to Utah's scenic landscapes, WestJet's new five-times weekly service between Edmonton and Salt Lake City will be monumental for business and leisure travellers.
In addition, WestJet will significantly grow Western Canada's summer connectivity to Florida, introducing four new routes to the sunshine state including a first-ever YVR-TPA flight.
WestJet also will extend between Winnipeg and Orlando to year round. In addition, Winnipeg-Nashville service will return for the full six-month summer season in 2025.
The acquisition of nine leased Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft, along with Swoop and Sunwing planes, allows the airline to bolster its strategic fleet growth, while managing delays for direct-from-factory aircraft, airline officials said. Updating and refreshing the interior cabins of all of these aircraft will be prioritized as part of the airline's existing fleet reconfiguration plans, to ensure a consistent experience for guests across its operation as soon as possible. WestJet also has announced a series of measures aimed at making travel this coming winter a much better experience.

Emirates Wins APAC Best Premium Economy And Opens Emirates World In Manila
When it comes to designing luxurious premium cabins, it seems the large Middle Eastern carriers lead the way, often sparing no expense to develop new concepts, materials, menus and service levels. When Emirates debuted its Premium Economy cabin in 2022, it ushered in a step change of what premium economy could look like, challenging many other airlines' business class layouts.
An award-winning premium economy cabin
In November, Emirates was crowned the Best Premium Economy Class in the 2024 Business Traveller Asia-Pacific Awards. The award comes as no surprise to anyone who has traveled in the cabin and adds to the more than 20 awards and recognitions Emirates has received this year, including seven accolades at the Skytrax World Airlines Awards in June, including one for the Best Premium Economy Class.
This latest achievement comes as Emirates continues its global multi-billion-dollar retrofit program. This program will see more than 200 Airbus A380 and Boeing 777 cabins fitted with premium economy, along with other cabin refreshments, ensuring all passengers can travel in the utmost comfort for many years to come.
Emirates Divisional Vice President Australasia Barry Brown said that having launched Premium Economy just two years ago in Sydney, seeing it receive this recognition from voters in the Business Traveler Asia-Pacific Awards is brilliant. He added that it has garnered global praise from customers and industry experts, with multiple award wins reflecting its outstanding performance and excellence.
"We currently serve Australia with close to 3,200 weekly seats in Premium Economy, having doubled the product deployment on flights to Melbourne earlier this year, giving passengers greater choice and flexibility while maintaining Australia's position as one of the key markets served with our best-in-class seats."
What makes the Emirates Premium Economy cabin a winner
As the pictures highlight, the Emirates Premium Economy cabin offers a signature experience with plush cream leather seats and wood veneer touches. Passengers also enjoy a generous baggage allowance and an exceptional dining experience, attended to by a team of Emirates cabin crew dedicated to Premium Economy passengers.
The award-winning cabin currently features flights to 19 destinations globally, including Asia-Pacific routes to Sydney, Melbourne, Auckland, Christchurch, Singapore, Osaka, Tokyo Narita and Tokyo Haneda. In its two years in service, the cabin has exceeded expectations, with more than 90,000 passengers flying to and from Australia opting for the premium experience.
Emirates opens first Emirates World in Southeast Asia
On Thursday, Emirates launched its first Emirates World retail concept in Southeast Asia, introducing the fully immersive experience in the Philippines' capital of Manila. Emirates has launched these reimagined retail spaces in Hong Kong, Dubai, London and Nairobi, with more stores set to progressively roll out to key markets over the next three years.
Emirates is investing approximately $27.2 million in these retail spaces, where visitors can browse a curated selection of Emirates-branded merchandise and travel accessories. A highlight of the Manila Emirates World Store is the Emirates A380 onboard lounge display, which gives customers a first-hand look at the premium touches that define Emirates' products in the sky.
The Emirates World retail store is part of the airline's broader strategy to get closer to its customers as they plan their travel and create an elevated experience consistent with the airline's brand. The Manila store was inaugurated by Emirates' Deputy President and Chief Commercial Officer Adnan Kazim, who said:
"The new Emirates World Store in Manila is designed to serve as a one-stop shop where customers can explore Emirates' best-in-class products and services, and provides visitors a glimpse of our onboard hospitality and excellence, ensuring the bar is set high when it comes to retail experiences both in the Philippines and across our global network."
The store is also equipped with smart technologies that set it apart from conventional travel spaces, featuring an interactive self-service screen that allows customers to quickly browse flight options, check availability and more. Emirates first operated in Manila in 1990 and currently serves the Philippines with 28 weekly flights. Emirates also has an interline agreement with Philippine Airlines (PAL) that allows PAL customers to connect to nine international points via Dubai.

New Non-Schengen Austrian Lounge Space In Vienna
Austrian Airlines has opened its new lounge area at the G-Gates in the non-Schengen zone at Vienna Airport on Level 3. The new lounge area offers premium service, culinary delights and privacy for guests, along with a fresh design concept. The space is open daily from 5:30 a.m. to 11 p.m.
Until the planned completion of the South Terminal extension in 2027, non-Schengen guests will now be warmly welcomed in close proximity to the former G01 and G03 gates. This is an ideal location during the major construction phase, allowing guests to reach their gates even more quickly and, thanks to its elevated position, have a direct view of the airfield and the large construction site. After completion, the Austrian Lounges at Vienna Airport will be relocated to a new, central and significantly larger area. “I am delighted that we will be able to offer our non-Schengen guests an attractive lounge experience with this newly designed area until the completion of the South Terminal extension in 2027,” said Austrian Airlines CCO, Dr Michael Trestl.
Coziness and Austrian hospitality for the best lounge experience
Natural, high-quality materials in rich, earthy colors dominate the new lounge concept. The furniture impresses with modern interpretations of classics such as the Austrian design Thonet armchairs with elements in Austrian red and cozy Ovale single chairs for extra privacy, undisturbed work or simply for relaxing. Soft carpets and a sophisticated lighting concept in the various zones complete the feel-good character of the lounge - always in reference to the diverse landscapes and cultural identity of Austria.
The lounge experience is now complemented by a serviced coffee house area with coffee and cakes, in addition to the existing food offering, to complete the Austrian culinary experience. The new lounge offers space for up to 180 guests, and HON Circle members will continue to have an exclusive area within the space with their own service. Automated access control to a lounge (incl. an accompanying person) is now being introduced for the first time at Austrian, and the use of ‘Star Alliance Biometrics Entrance’ will also be possible in the future.
On average, 800 guests visit the lounges in the non-Schengen area every day. Austrian Airlines’ Brand Management & Customer Experience department is responsible for the new lounge concept, and the Viennese architecture and interior design studio Archisphere has been engaged as architects.

China Is Expanding Visa-Free Entry To More Countries In Bid To Boost Economy
China announced Friday that it would expand visa-free entry to nine more countries as it seeks to boost tourism and business travel to help revive a sluggish economy.
Starting Nov. 30, travelers from Bulgaria, Romania, Malta, Croatia, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Estonia, Latvia and Japan will be able to enter China for up to 30 days without a visa, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said.
That will bring to 38 the number of countries that have been granted visa-free access since last year. Only three countries had visa-free access previously, and theirs had been eliminated during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The addition of Japan appears to reflect a recent willingness on China’s part to improve ties, which have soured in part over more strident talk from Tokyo on the Taiwan issue. The two countries reached a deal in September in their dispute over the release into the sea of treated but still radioactive water from the destroyed Fukushima nuclear power plant.
Japan was one of the three countries with visa-free entry before the pandemic, and the government had repeatedly requested an early resumption, Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi told reporters in Tokyo.
“We hope the visa exemption measure announced by the Chinese side will contribute to further smooth our exchanges between Japan and China,” he said.
The permitted length of stay for visa-free entry is being increased from the previous 15 days, Lin said, and people participating in exchanges will be eligible for the first time. China has been pushing people-to-people exchange between students, academics and others to try to improve its sometimes strained relations with other countries.
China strictly restricted entry during the pandemic and ended its restrictions much later than most other countries. It restored the previous visa-free access for citizens of Brunei and Singapore in July 2023, and then expanded visa-free entry to six more countries — France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain and Malaysia — on Dec. 1 of last year.
The program has since been expanded in tranches. Some countries have announced visa-free entry for Chinese citizens, notably Thailand, which wants to bring back Chinese tourists.
For the three months from July through September this year, China recorded 8.2 million entries by foreigners, of which 4.9 million were visa-free, the official Xinhua News Agency said, quoting a Foreign Ministry consular official.

American Express Is Adding A Reservation System To Centurion Lounges, Although Not Available In Every Airport Yet
The American Express Centurion New York restaurant in New York.

American Express Centurion members have a few more options than most travelers, including the ability to access members-only airport lounges, restaurants and dedicated spaces at events like the U.S. Open. Centurion Lounges have gotten fine reviews for their food and the aesthetics of the space.
If you’ve ever tried to reserve access to a Centurion space, you may have encountered some difficulties in the past — or faced the prospect of waiting on a longer line than you’d like. Based on recent developments, it sounds like American Express has responded to this criticism with some changes to its booking system.
According to View From the Wing’s Gary Leff, American Express has added digital waiting lists to a number of Centurion Lounges. For Leff, this measure addresses some of the issues he’s experienced with overcrowding in Centurion Lounges in recent years. “The whole point of an airport lounge is not to wait in the terminal,” he (accurately) observed in an article on the subject.
Leff cited reports on the r/AmexPlatinum subreddit that described these changes — including one from user Gusontherun, who reported that the Dallas-Fort Worth Centurion Lounge was now using this system. Several other users noted that they, too, were seeing this feature when they checked the AmEx app.
Unfortunately for some travelers, this doesn’t mean that Centurion Lounge access has suddenly become far more user-friendly all over the aviation landscape.
In a report on the booking system upgrade at The Points Guy, Matt Moffitt noted that one of the site’s editors found that at least one lounge did not “have separate lines for those who have and don’t have a QR code for entry.” Given that the QR codes are only valid for 10 minutes, it’s not hard to see how this could be an issue as the system rolls out nationwide — and frequent travelers get more used to making reservations online.

Lighting Of Vienna Town Hall Christmas Tree Marks Start Of Yuletide Season In Austrian Capital
A flip of the switch, some oohs and ahhs from a crowd of onlookers, and a giant decorated Christmas tree went up in lights on Vienna’s town hall square as the Yuletide season got rolling in Austria’s capital on Saturday evening.
Mulled wine was poured, frosted gingerbread cookies dangled from the roofs of vendors’ stalls, kiddies rode a carousel and a brass band tooted out Johann Strauss II’s “The Blue Danube” waltz as the holiday merriment set in.
Vienna Mayor Michael Ludwig joined the ceremonial illumination of the 30-meter (about 100-foot) spruce that bedecked the square in front of town hall, which also was bathed in light.
This year Vienna upped the ante by decorating the tree with 2,000 LED lights and 1,000 Christmas baubles at the market, which drew 3.3 million visitors last year.
The Christmas market was one of more than a dozen in Vienna: Another at Schoenbrunn Castle drew 50,000 visitors at its opening last weekend, part of a tradition notably in German-speaking countries like Austria.
Most of the Christmas markets in Vienna will be open until Dec. 26, though the ones in front of the town hall and Schoenbrunn will stay open until Jan. 6 next year.

American Airlines Is Now Flying a New Route To A Caribbean Island Filled With Beaches, Boutique Hotels And Rum Shops
There are about 1,000 of them on the island. Some say 1,500, some say more. They’re set on side streets, in the heart of town, or right on the beach. And in Barbados, rum shops are an integral part of the culture.
Barbados just got easier to visit.
You go in, choose your sugarcane spirit, take it with you and begin conversations that can last all day long, from politics to sports to the essential questions of life.
If you haven’t been to Barbados, a stop at a rum shop is essential. But it’s just a part of a vibrant tapestry of reasons why this Caribbean island is such a fascinating one, from its UNESCO World Heritage Site near Bridgetown to its jaw-dropping beaches and its unique collection of rarefied, lovely, mostly small resorts.
And Barbados just got much easier to visit from the all-important New York market.
Treasure Beach is a hidden gem in Barbados.
American Airlines has officially kicked off its newest route between New York’s John F Kennedy International Airport and Barbados, with service operating every day of the week on Boeing 737 aircraft.
It’s a huge addition for Barbados, which has been making a concerted effort to draw in more American visitors, part of a wider push for the world’s largest airline in the Caribbean for this winter season.
Book a flight in the main cabin and you’ll have prices starting at $535 round trip, and $861 in business class. The flight takes just under five hours.

If Planning A Trip To Israel, Here Are The Airlines Currently Flying There.
If you are planning to fly to Israel, here is an up-to-date list of foreign airlines that fly to Israel.
Emirates airlines, Fly Dubai and Etihad continue to fly to Israel daily. From Europe, you can see Tarom, Hi-Sky, Fly One, Cyprus, Smartwings, Blue Bird, Tus Airways and other companies.
In addition, Ethiopian Airlines, Hainan Airlines, Uzbekistan Airways, and a few other companies still operate direct flights to Israel. It is important to emphasize that information can change all the time and it is important to stay in constant contact with the airlines you are supposed to fly with.
The four Israeli airlines also continue to operate continuously, with El Al, Arkia and IsraAir operating direct flights to dozens of destinations around the world, and Air Haifa currently operates only on routes between Ben Gurion Airport and Larnaca.
Currently, most airlines from Europe, North America, Asia and Africa have postponed operations in Israel for the foreseeable future, and at this point, but hopefully we will soon see a massive return of airlines to Israel.

Travelore News: US No-Frills Pioneer Spirit Airlines Files For Bankruptcy Protection
Spirit Airlines has filed for bankruptcy protection, it said on Monday, after the pioneer of no-frills travel in the United States struggled with a long run of quarterly losses, failed merger attempts and looming debt maturities.
The Florida-based airline said it had pre-arranged a deal with its bondholders to restructure its debts and raise money to help it operate during the bankruptcy process, which it expects to exit in the first quarter of 2025.
The carrier said it expected to continue operating its business as normal through the proceedings and customers could book and fly without interruption.
The Chapter 11 process will not impact wages or benefits of its employees, it said. Its vendors and aircraft lessors will also continue to be paid and will not be impaired, it added.
The company said it expected to be delisted from the New York Stock Exchange in the near term, and its shares to be canceled and have no value as part of the restructuring.
PROFIT STRUGGLE
Spirit, known for its bright yellow livery, is the first major U.S. airline to file for Chapter 11 since 2011. It has been facing an uncertain future after the collapse of its $3.8 billion planned merger with JetBlue Airways (JBLU.O), opens new tab in January.
Meanwhile, intense competition among U.S. carriers for price-sensitive leisure travelers as well as an oversupply of airline seats in the domestic market hit its pricing power. Its average fare per passenger was down 19% year-on-year in the first half of this year from a year earlier.
It is also among the airlines most heavily affected by issues with RTX's (RTX.N), opens new tab Pratt & Whitney Geared Turbofan engines, which have forced it to ground multiple aircraft and driven up costs.
Spirit has not posted a full-year profit since 2019. It lost about $360 million in the first half of this year despite strong travel demand.
Analysts say a merger with JetBlue opens new tab would have thrown a lifeline to the company. However, a Boston judge blocked the deal on the grounds it would reduce competition, raising doubts about the company's ability to manage looming debt maturities.
Spirit has been shrinking its operations as part of its efforts to cut costs and shore up its finances. It has furloughed hundreds of pilots and delayed aircraft deliveries. It is also selling its planes to boost liquidity.
A 'COMPREHENSIVE' RESTRUCTURING
It filed for Chapter 11 protection in New York. The airline said a "comprehensive balance sheet restructuring" was expected to reduce total debt, provide increased financial flexibility, position it for long-term success, and accelerate investments.
'
As part of the restructuring agreement, the company has received commitments for a $350 million equity investment from existing bondholders. It plans to reduce its debt load by $795 million via debt/equity swap transaction.
Existing bondholders will also provide $300 million in debtor-in-possession (DIP) financing, which, together with available cash, is expected to support the airline through the Chapter 11 process.
'
Spirit's flight attendants union said the bankruptcy filing does not change pay, benefits or working conditions for its members. It told flight attendants to continue to work as planned.
Spirit's shares, which have plunged more than 90% this year, were halted for trading on Monday.
HUMBLE BEGINNINGS
The company started out as a long-haul trucking company in 1964 before shifting to aviation around 1983. It offered leisure packages to popular destinations under the name Charter One Airlines and rebranded to Spirit in 1992.
The discount carrier became popular with budget-conscious customers willing to forgo amenities like checked bags and seat assignments.
Ultra-low-cost carriers, which excelled at keeping their expenses low and offering affordable, no-frills travel, have struggled since the pandemic as some travelers prefer to pay extra for a more comfortable journey as they pursue experiences.
By Shivansh Tiwary and Rajesh Kumar Singh, Reuters Spirit's troubles, along with those at some of rival budget carriers, have spurred talk of a flawed business model among some Wall Street analysts.

St Maarten’s Princess Juliana Airport Finally Has A New Arrival Terminal
It’s been seven years in the making. First, St Maarten’s Princess Juliana International Airport unveiled its new departure terminal, an impressive reimagining of its pre-Hurricane Irma look.
Now, the long-awaited arrival terminal has officially made its debut, dramatically changing the way passengers get into St Maarten
It’s only been open for a few weeks, but the new terminal is a dramatic upgrade from what had been a make-shift, provisional space that had been used in varying forms since Irma in 2017, when the airport was significantly damaged.
But it’s not just a sleek, modern arrival area; it includes improved baggage handling; a new, streamlined immigration and customs process (one that includes the island’s new electronic arrival forms); new digital kiosks; and new facilities for the passenger experience.
“I’m incredibly proud of what our team has accomplished,” said Michiel Parent, commercial director at the airport, in a statement provided to Caribbean Journal.
It’s a significant boost for the airport, following the successful launch of its new departure hall. We loved the new look of that terminal on our recent visit to Princess Juliana, from the vastly improved food and beverage offering (including a lovely Bacchus Express) to a very solid duty-free shopping experience.
St Maarten isn’t just a popular destination (both the French side and the Dutch side); it’s also an essential air hub for many of the islands in the Northern and Eastern Caribbean, particularly nearby islands like Saba, Statia, St Barth and Anguilla, all of which rely on the island for transiting passengers.
New digital kiosks.
Are you planning a vacation to St Martin right now? In recent years, it’s the French side that has seen the most tourism growth and development, from a culinary scene that is right at the top of the Caribbean to continued growth in the hotel sector, particularly boutique hotels like Le Martin and, more recently, The Forest.
Marriott also just opened a brand-new resort on the island, with the new JW Marriott Beach Resort on Dawn Beach, one of the best beaches on the Dutch side. Rooms from $449 per night.
Our favorite place to stay in St Martin remains one of the Caribbean’s top resorts: the Grand Case Beach Club.

AirBnB Users Will Play Gladiators In Rome’s Colosseum Under $1.5-Million Sponsorship Deal
The ancient Roman Colosseum will be the venue of gladiator fights for the first time in two millennia under a $1.5-million sponsorship deal with AirBnB that aims to promote “a more conscious tourism.”
Under the deal announced by Airbnb and the Colosseum on Wednesday, the sponsorship by the short-term rental giant will cover the renewal of an educational program inside the ancient Roman amphitheater covering the history of the structure and gladiators.
Eight of the platform’s users and their plus-ones will be able to participate in faux gladiator fights after the Colosseum’s closing time on May 7-8, taking the same underground route used by gladiators in ancient Rome to reach the arena. People can apply for the experience on Nov. 27 at no cost, and the “gladiators” will be chosen by lottery.
The superintendent of the Colosseum Archaeological Park, Alfonsina Russo, told The Associated Press that the deal is in conjunction with the release of Ridley Scott’s new film “Gladiators II,” which opened in Italy on Thursday.
Russo characterized the sponsorship arrangement as one of the many such deals to help finance projects at the park.

New York Moving To Revive Manhattan Congestion Charge
New York plans to revive a congestion mitigation charge for driving in Manhattan that the state indefinitely put on hold in June, the U.S. Transportation Department said on Thursday.
New York City's congestion pricing program, the first of its kind in the United States, was initially to have charged a toll of $15 during daytime hours for passenger vehicles driving in Manhattan south of 60th Street starting June 30.
A department spokesperson said on Thursday that New York notified the Federal Highway Administration of updated plans to advance the project with a starting toll of $9 for passenger cars. The agency said it is finalizing the steps needed to complete the agreement.
New York Governor Kathy Hochul will announce the plan on Thursday, Reuters reported on Wednesday, citing a source.
Hochul plans to announce a revised program at 12:00 p.m. ET (1700 GMT) that is expected to launch before Jan. 20, when President-elect Donald Trump takes office.
Hochul had cited high inflation and a desire to not deter commuters or tourists because of the additional charge for her decision to halt implementation.
London implemented a similar charge in 2003.
The Metropolitan Transportation Authority is expected to vote next week to approve the charge, the source said.
New York City Comptroller Brad Lander said the decision is a long-awaited win for millions of subway users. "If we don’t get the system in operation before Donald Trump becomes president, we’ll lose $15 billion in critical transit investments," Lander said.
MTA has said congestion pricing would cut traffic by 17%, improve air quality and increase mass transit use by 1% to 2%, generate up to $1.5 billion annually and support $15 billion in debt financing for mass transit improvement.
In 2019, state lawmakers approved the plan to help fund improvements in mass transit using tolls to manage traffic in New York City, the most congested of any U.S. city.
New York says more than 900,000 vehicles enter the Manhattan Central Business District daily, which reduces travel speeds to around 7 miles per hour on average.

TSA-Approved – These 11 Liquids Are Allowed Through Airport Screening, Regardless Of Size
Surely you have also gotten nervous before a plane trip because you forgot the small bottles of liquids, or you have also experienced how you have forgotten to transfer your liquids and the plane staff has made you throw away an entire bottle of cologne before boarding… We have all experienced it, don’t worry.
Since 9/11, passengers are required to carry their liquids in small containers that do not exceed 100 ml, and that do not add up to more than one litre per person.
According to The New York Post, there are speculations that some liquids will be able to be transported in their original size and container in the very near future. Technological advances could mean that the 3-1-1 rule (which requires liquids to be stored in a quart-sized resealable plastic bag and that no container can hold more than 3.4 ounces of liquid) may be coming to an end.
The New York Post has reported that 3D CT (computerized tomography) scanners used at airports to detect unauthorized liquids could be phased out, allowing personal hygiene products to travel in regular size.
There are already some airports (especially in Europe) where this restriction has been eliminated since 2023. The TSA (Transportation Security Administration) informed its workers that they are hoping that this limit can be lifted in the very near future, but that, for now, they could do nothing.
Are there liquids that I can carry in large format?
Yes, in fact, the TSA has reported that there is a list of 11 products that can travel in original size and are those related to daily use (many of them practically essential for health and well-being).
The list of these items is as follows.
Baby milk: If you are traveling with a baby, you can now carry breast milk or formula in the amount you need without worrying about the usual limits. Water and baby formula: In addition to milk, you can carry water to prepare the formula in mid-flight, something that will really make traveling with the little ones easier.
Liquid medications: Anyone who needs liquid medication can carry it without problems. The TSA recommends having the prescription or some medical document that justifies it on hand in case the authorities do not allow its passage.
Hand sanitizer: This product, which became essential during the pandemic, was already allowed in full size and will continue to be.
Nasal sprays and saline solutions: Very useful for those who need to maintain their respiratory health on long trips, these products can be carried without volume limits.
Artificial tears and eye drops: For all those who wear contact lenses or suffer from dry eyes, this permission is a relief and they will not need a justification to carry them with them on trips.
Non-flammable hair and body sprays: These personal care products (as long as they are not flammable) are also on the TSA list.
Contact lens solution: Essential for contact lens wearers.
Denture cleaning fluid: Now, denture wearers can carry their cleaning products without worrying about volume limits. 10. Creams and lotions (for medical use)
Inhaler fluids: Liquids needed for inhalation devices (for those with asthma or respiratory problems)
Live fish transported in water and other biological specimens.
Freezer or ice packs for necessary medical items (such as vaccines that need to be kept cold)
The TSA says officers can still scan liquids for explosives or prohibited items hidden in luggage, but that, for example, in the case of liquid medications that cannot be exposed to X-rays, there are other ways to examine them.

JetBlue Is Now Flying Nonstop To A Caribbean Island Famous For Diving And Food
More than 80 different dive sites. A food scene anchored by a restaurant with a three Michelin-star pedigree. A fun, carefree, quintessential small-island vibe.
Travelers have been flocking to the Dutch Caribbean island of Bonaire over the last few years, as a destination that was long something of a secret has started to find its place on the travel map.
Now, it’s a whole lot easier to get there, with just-launched flights between New York and Bonaire on JetBlue.
The new nearly-five-hour flight, which officially started this past week, will be running twice per week, with nonstop flights on Tuesdays and Saturdays out of New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport.
JetBlue has already flown for years to Bonaire’s Dutch Caribbean neighbors of Aruba and Curacao, and now it’s completed the trifecta.
It’s “significant step in our commitment to making our beautiful island more accessible to North American travelers,” said Tourism Corporation Bonaire CEO Miles Mercera, in a statement provided to Caribbean Journal.
So what do New Yorkers need to know about the island?
Well, the island found fame for its diving. What’s unique in Bonaire is that you don’t have to take a dive boat. Practically every dive site on the island is a shore diving spot, mean you can pull up your car right to the coastline, grab your tanks and jump in. (Most hard-core divers rent pick-up trucks for this purpose).
If you’re not a diver, you can dive into a food scene that is among the best in the region. It’s topped by the Brass Boer, the Caribbean outpost of the three-Michelin-star Die Librije in Holland and one that has regularly found its way to the top of the 50 Best Restaurants in the Caribbean rankings. It extends to everything from food trucks (make sure you go for the lionfish burgers at Cactus Blue) to seafood spots like At Sea.
The Brass Boer, the number one restaurant in the Caribbean last year.
What about hotels?
We love the Harbour Village Beach Club, a resort we named Caribbean Hotel of the Year in 2023 and one that remains the island’s signature place to stay — including the best beach in Bonaire. Rates from $350 right now.
There’s also the fun, sleek Delfins Beach Resort ($226), which, as we just reported, is joining the Hilton portfolio.
For a boutique stay, try the lovely Bamboo Bonaire, an adults-only hotel that’s all about wellness and serenity (Rooms starting at $226)
What about flight prices? You can book on JetBlue for as low as $555.24 for an itinerary in mid-November.

Tourists In Rome Now Have A Walkway To Visit The Trevi Fountain But Can’t Toss Coins While Under Maintenance
Tourists in Rome won’t be allowed to toss coins over their shoulders into the Trevi Fountain, following tradition, though an elevated walkway now gives limited access to the monument during maintenance work.
Rome Mayor Roberto Gualtieri inaugurated the steel walkway on Saturday, saying it will provide tourists with a close-up view of the fountain and calling it a “unique experience” that won’t be ruined by overcrowding.
The walkway over the fountain’s basin is able to accommodate about 130 people at a time.
But tourists won’t be allowed to toss coins from there, as the fountain is currently drained, and could face a 50-euro fine if they do, the mayor warned.
City lore has it that tossing a coin into the Baroque fountain will ensure a return trip to Rome.
Gualtieri said a small pool has been set up next to the walkway to collect the coins, which are donated to the Caritas charity to fund meals for people in need.
The walkway will remain until the end of the maintenance work, which is expected to finish by year’s end.
Rome city officials are devising a plan to block off the area around the fountain. Under the plan, visitors will be required to book online and pay 2 euros ($2.20). Once inside, they will have 30 minutes to enjoy the fountain.

A Culinary Journey Through Mexico’s State Of Nayarit
From the sun-drenched beaches of Punta Mita to the coffee farms nestled in the Sierra Madre mountains, the state of Nayarit is quickly becoming one of Mexico’s most celebrated culinary destinations. Known for its fresh seafood, traditional dishes, and fine dining scene, Nayarit offers travelers a flavorful journey that highlights both its rich history and evolving gastronomy. This year, the 29th Festival Gourmet International will take place from November 7 to 17, showcasing the region’s finest cuisine and attracting food lovers from around the world.
Fine Dining with a View: Punta Mita’s Culinary Excellence
Punta Mita, the exclusive resort town along Nayarit’s coastline, is home to some of the finest dining experiences in all of Mexico. Boasting luxurious beachfront restaurants that blend international culinary trends with local flavors, it has become a paradise for those seeking refined, gourmet meals in a breathtaking setting.
Among the standouts is Carolina, a AAA Five-Diamond restaurant that offers an innovative take on Mexican cuisine with an emphasis on local seafood. The menu highlights seasonal ingredients, and the chefs take pride in using traditional techniques, like the open-fire grilling that characterizes many local dishes.
Another notable dining venue is Spice Market, located in the W Punta de Mita. Here, Southeast Asian flavors are married with fresh local ingredients, providing guests with a fusion experience that nods to global influences while embracing the bounty of the Pacific Coast.
For travelers looking for a more authentic yet elevated experience, Hector’s Kitchen in Punta Mita delivers. Helmed by Chef Héctor Leyva, the legendary institution offers a farm-to-table approach, highlighting local ingredients in dishes that are a true celebration of Mexican flavors. Known for its fresh seafood, tender meats, and unique salsas, Hector’s Kitchen is a must-visit for those seeking modern Mexican cuisine in a relaxed, stylish setting.
Traditional Nayarit Dishes: A Taste of Heritage
While fine dining has taken root along Nayarit’s coastline, the state’s culinary soul remains grounded in its traditional dishes, which are often passed down through generations. Nayarit’s cuisine is deeply connected to its coastal geography, where the sea provides an endless supply of fresh ingredients, and the culture celebrates communal, slow-cooked meals.
One of Nayarit’s most iconic dishes is Pescado Zarandeado. This savory dish features whole fish, typically red snapper, marinated in a mix of chiles, garlic, and citrus before being grilled over hot coals. The fish takes on a smoky flavor that is perfectly balanced by the tangy marinade, a testament to Nayarit’s expertise in grilling techniques.
Another local favorite is Chicharrón de Pescado, crispy fried fish bites often served with a side of spicy salsa. This dish highlights Nayarit’s love of simple, bold flavors, where fresh fish is seasoned and cooked to golden perfection.
Nayarit is also known for more complex dishes like Tlaxtihuilli, a pre-Hispanic soup made from shrimp and thickened with masa. This hearty dish is a staple in rural communities, where the flavors of ancient traditions are kept alive in everyday meals.
The region’s culinary diversity extends beyond seafood to dishes like Puerco Echado, a slow-cooked pork dish seasoned with native herbs and spices, offering a rich and savory experience. It’s served with handmade tortillas and a side of beans, embodying the hearty, comforting essence of Nayarit’s inland cuisine.
No exploration of Nayarit’s flavors would be complete without trying Tejuino, a traditional beverage made from fermented corn dough mixed with brown sugar and lime juice. This refreshing drink is beloved throughout the region, especially on warm afternoons, and reflects the importance of maize in local culture.
A Growing Coffee Culture
Beyond the beaches and coastal delicacies, Nayarit is also becoming known for its coffee culture, particularly in the town of Compostela. Here, the lush highlands provide the perfect climate for growing rich, aromatic coffee beans. Small-batch coffee farms, many family-owned for generations, are producing some of Mexico’s most sought-after brews. Visitors can enjoy fresh, locally roasted coffee at one of Compostela’s many charming cafes, where the art of brewing is celebrated alongside the region’s rich agricultural history.
29th Festival Gourmet International: A Showcase of Nayarit’s Culinary Brilliance
Nayarit’s gastronomic allure will be on full display at the 29th Festival Gourmet International, running from November 7 to 17, 2024. This annual event, which draws chefs and food enthusiasts from around the globe, will feature a wide range of activities, from cooking demonstrations to exclusive tasting menus. Local chefs will collaborate with internationally renowned culinary masters to create dishes that fuse Nayarit’s traditional flavors with contemporary techniques.
The festival will also spotlight the region’s abundant seafood, its coffee culture, and the traditional dishes that make Nayarit a must-visit for food lovers. With so much to offer, Nayarit stands as a culinary destination that is as diverse as it is delicious. Additionally, Air Canada will add year-round, four-times weekly service from Toronto to Port of Spain in Trinidad and Tobago.
Transborder
Air Canada will expand its transborder services with new routes to Nashville from Vancouver and Cincinnati from Montreal, complementing existing service from Toronto into Ohio and Northern Kentucky. The carrier is also resuming its service to Jacksonville from Toronto, the only non-stop service between Canada and Jacksonville.
"We will be offering 160,000 weekly seats to the U.S. during the peak of next summer, including new routes from Vancouver to Nashville and Montreal to Cincinnati. Our expanded transborder service will build upon our leading transborder network in conjunction with increased frequencies to seven key U.S. cities. For customers, Air Canada's transborder flights are timed to allow for easy connections at major hubs with our international network and travellers returning to the U.S. can save time on arrival with the convenience of U.S. customs pre-clearance during their connection in Canada," said Mr. Galardo.
For summer 2025, Air Canada will add extra daily frequencies from Toronto to Indianapolis, Boston, Tampa and Dallas-Fort Worth. From Montreal, an extra daily flight will be added to Denver, Nashville and Raleigh-Durham, as well as an increase in service to Tampa to daily from three-times a week in summer 2025. Air Canada continues to be the largest carrier serving the Transborder market and will offer customers more than 200 daily flights to over 45 destinations in Summer 2025.
Pacific
Air Canada will also bolster capacity in Summer 2025 to key Asian markets. Air Canada will resume summer seasonal service to Seoul from Montreal and to Osaka from Toronto on Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft. Both launched in Summer 2024, these services provide a convenient, non-stop option for customers travelling between the East Coast of North America and the Asia-Pacific region.
"Serving destinations across the six inhabited continents, Air Canada's global network continues to be the bridge that brings the world closer, and we look forward to welcoming our customers onboard with our enhanced Summer 2025 schedule," said Mr. Galardo.

PHS Announces 2025 PHS Philadelphia Flower Show Theme “Gardens Of Tomorrow” March 1-9, 2025, At The Pennsylvania Convention Center
How can gardening shape a better future? The Pennsylvania Horticultural Society’s (PHS) 2025 PHS Philadelphia Flower Show will explore this and more with its theme, "Gardens of Tomorrow." Globally renowned for its stunning floral displays, garden landscapes, and premier plant and botanical art competitions, this year’s exhibits invite you to explore the future through the eyes of visionary designers, expert gardeners, and passionate green enthusiasts as they merge nature’s brilliance with human ingenuity. Guests will experience imaginative designs, innovative ideas, and boundless inspiration on how to cultivate the possibilities of tomorrow through gardening.
‘Gardens of Tomorrow’ invites us to envision a future where our actions today nurture a healthier planet. Through the simple act of gardening and planting trees, we plant seeds of hope for a greener future. The 2025 PHS Philadelphia Flower Show highlights the transformative power of plants and inspires us to create a beautiful, more resilient future together,” said VP and Creative Director of the Philadelphia Flower Show, Seth Pearsoll.
Whether you enjoy gardening for its many health and wellness benefits, you plant for your community and the connections it fosters, or you garden with sustainability in mind to strengthen our planet’s ecosystem – every act of gardening is an act of hope that can improve our outcomes.
As part of the 2025 PHS Philadelphia Flower Show announcement, PHS is unveiling the first in a series of thematic art pieces inspired by "Gardens of Tomorrow." Digitally hybridized flowers, using historic photos and illustrations from the PHS McLean Library, hint at a future of possibilities echoed by the prismatic effect and varied fonts. With more versions to come in the new year, this first release teases the idea of what could sprout tomorrow with what we tend to today.
Now in its 196th year, the award-winning PHS Philadelphia Flower Show is a world-renowned gardening event and PHS’s main fundraiser for its lauded greening work throughout the Philadelphia region that aims to advance health and well-being for all.
