German rail service operator, Deutsche Bahn, officially launched a direct, high-speed train on Monday, linking both countries between Paris and Berlin, while further strengthening the friendship bond between the two, in hopes of luring more travelers to travel by rail service.
At 9:55 a.m. (0855 GMT), on Monday, December 16th, the German ICE train departed from the French capital's Gare de l'Est station and arrived eight hours later at Berlin Hauptbahnhof at 6:03 p.m., connecting both countries by train via a once-per-day journey that is not only convenient but welcomed by many.
Germany's ICE Train Attended and Lauded by Dignitaries at Inaugural Launch and Sets Off Just in Time For the Holidays
Both France and Germany are high-stakes players within the European Union. Their close-knit relationship makes them the two most popular countries within the EU, while boasting larger-than-life economies in comparison to other European countries.
Dignitaries, such as François Delattre, the French ambassador to Germany, and Kai Wegner, the governing mayor of Berlin, were in attendance for the inaugural launch of the new, direct, high-speed train that links both capitals ‘from city center to city center.’
Commuters also get to experience the ICE train just in time for the Christmas holidays, stopping at major holiday destinations such as Strasbourg, Karlsruhe, and Frankfurt during its travels from Berlin to Paris, and vice versa.
For those traveling to Berlin, the high-speed train arrives at Hauptbahnhof each day shortly after 6 p.m. For those traveling to Paris, arrival time at the Gare de l'Est station is scheduled for slightly before 8 p.m.
And, at a reasonable price for a one-way ticket starting at €24.99 ($26.23) to upwards of €99 ($104), depending on seating class, amount of tickets, and travel dates, traveling via this rail service is a win-win for everyone.
'
The New, Direct, High-Speed Train Affords Deutsche Bahn a Chance to Redeem Itself With Commuters
Deutsche Bahn’s reputation for prompt and punctual train services has been on the negative side due to 60 percent of their long-distance trains arriving on time, while the remaining 40 percent were continuously late, causing travel nightmares for passengers trying to get to their destinations on time.
With the launch of its new, direct service linking both France and Germany’s capitals, the German rail service operator hopes to redeem itself with commuters, while increasing the percentage of punctual train arrivals by an additional 15 percent.

"German Transport Minister Volker Wissing also said it is more than “just a new, additional offer.” He said, “We still have a lot of potential to get as many people as possible onto the rails inside Europe with attractive offers, including for longer journeys and live out this friendship.”
In addition to the new, direct rail service between Paris and Berlin, Deutsche Bain offers a direct, seven-hour train journey between Munich and Amsterdam, as well.

The Nation's Largest Indoor Agriculture Event Returns To Pennsylvania - Jan. 4-11
The 109th Pennsylvania Farm Show is taking place January 4-11 at the Farm Show Complex in Harrisburg. While it’s been in existence since 1916, this isn’t your granddaddy’s country fair.
The weeklong gathering is all about “Powering Pennsylvania,” recognizing the state’s many family-run agritourism destinations and green-energy producers that help drive the Keystone State’s economy and growing agritourism industry with 593,000 jobs and pouring more than $132.5 billion into PA communities every year.
Every year, the PA Farm Show, Pennsylvania’s State Fair™, brings half a million visitors to the capitol city for eight days of competition, and family fun with an educational twist. This year’s Farm Show promises to be the best yet, appealing to all ages and interests. Highlights include:
Instagrammable Moments with Mini Highland Cows - Swartz Farm and Friends of Farm Show Foundation are giving guests a chance to pet and snap an unforgettable selfie with these adorable bovines.
Dr. Temple Grandin, a professor and best-selling author whose life was portrayed by Claire Danes in the HBO Film Temple Grandin, will take to the stage on January 9 at 9:00 a.m. to share her innovative perspective on problem-solving and understanding animals. Her appearance and fireside chat will further showcase the powerful women leading and shaping Pennsylvania’s agriculture industry.
It’s all about being green, and those in search of new ideas to expand or change-up their flower or vegetable gardens can visit the GIANT Expo Hall’s Conservation Exhibit how PA farmers are working for cleaner air and water, and how they can incorporate some of these practices into their own gardening.
Award-winning chef Jet Tila, Pennsylvania’s Food Network star, author and five-time Guiness World Record-holder for, among other things, creating the longest California Roll, will lead an army of talented PA chefs at the Preferred Culinary Connection state in the Main Hall. Guests can sample recipes from future stars enrolled at PA culinary schools, grab a cookbook or embark on a farm-to-table culinary adventure.
Throughout the Farm Show, there will be a breadth of events, from cooking classes and competitions to hair-raising Mullet Championship and favorite foods to sample and purchase.
Like I said at the start, this isn’t your granddaddy’s farm expo but instead a modern-day gathering that explores Pennsylvania’s bountiful agriculture and agritourism.

JetBlue Boosts Boston Transatlantic Flying By Launching New Service To Madrid And Edinburgh
JetBlue, New England’s leading leisure airline, is elevating transatlantic travel with the launch of two exciting new routes to Madrid and Edinburgh. Starting May 22, 2025, JetBlue will introduce daily nonstop seasonal service between Boston Logan International Airport (BOS) and Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport (MAD), marking its debut in Spain and expanding its European footprint.
On the same day, JetBlue will also kick off daily seasonal flights between Boston Logan and Edinburgh Airport (EDI) in Scotland. This new route will join JetBlue’s popular summer seasonal service between New York’s JFK Airport and Edinburgh, giving travelers even more ways to experience the charm of Scotland's historic capital. Both routes, along with all of JetBlue’s European destinations, are now available for booking.
“Madrid and Edinburgh represent two of Europe’s most exciting and popular destinations, and we’re happy to offer even more transatlantic travel options for our customers from Boston and New England,” said Daniel Shurz, head of revenue, network and enterprise planning at JetBlue. “Europe continues to be part of our network strategy, as our loyal customers look for JetBlue's signature service and low fares to bring them to top leisure destinations, including across the Atlantic."
Since its entrance into the European market over three years ago, JetBlue’s reputation has quickly grown as the airline of choice for affordable, customer-focused, and premium transatlantic travel.
Optimizing JetBlue’s European Service with JetForward
JetBlue's new Boston flights to Madrid and Edinburgh support its JetForward strategy to build the best East Coast leisure network and return to sustained profitability. Edinburgh and Madrid will join JetBlue’s existing transatlantic seasonal service from Boston to Amsterdam, Dublin, and London-Gatwick, and year-round flights to London-Heathrow and Paris. In summer 2025, JetBlue will offer 7 daily nonstops from Boston to Europe.
From New York-JFK, JetBlue serves Dublin and Edinburgh seasonally, while Amsterdam, London-Heathrow, and Paris are served year-round. Based on their popularity, returning routes to Dublin and Edinburgh have been extended this year to the end of October, a month later than the previous year.
“Since launching flights to London in 2021, we’ve thoughtfully adjusted our European service to maximize value for our customers and our business,” said Shurz. “By aligning our schedule with peak seasonal demand and flying our aircraft to other destinations in the off-season, we’re capitalizing from a business perspective while delivering the destinations and experiences our customers love. This approach is driving meaningful results.”
Customers across JetBlue’s network can connect through Boston and New York as gateways to their next European adventure or, via Europe, both focus cities serve as a gateway to JetBlue’s many destinations throughout the United States, Canada, the Caribbean and Latin America.

TAP Air Portugal Just Added 3 New U.S. Flights, Including A New Route To The Azores, The "Hawaii Of Europe".
The Portuguese carrier has unveiled a fresh lineup of new flights from major U.S. gateways to dreamy destinations throughout the country, including hopping cities like Lisbon and Porto and a beautiful island escape.

Travelers in Northern California are about to get a nonstop flight to the Azores, a lesser-visited Portuguese island paradise. This offbeat routing is one of a trio of seasonal routes that TAP Air Portugal is launching for the summer of 2025, which will also include flights from its newest U.S. gateway, Los Angeles.
The Azores, a rocky archipelago in the Atlantic some 850 miles off the coast of Portugal, has gained traction among travelers in recent years for its unspoiled beauty, eco-friendly hotels, fine wines, and farm-to-table cuisine.
It already has some nonstop service from the United States, mainly from East Coast gateways like New York and Boston. But this will be the first time TAP Air Portugal is offering a direct flight from the West Coast to the Azores.
From June 3 through August 26, 2025, the new flight will operate once a week—every Tuesday—from San Francisco International Airport (SFO) to Terceira’s Lajes Airport (TER) as a stop on a flight that will continue to Lisbon. On other days of the week (with frequencies varying by season), TAP flies nonstop between SFO and Lisbon year-round.
The Azores island of Terceira is known for its extensive network of lava caves that travelers can explore, natural ocean pools, and its main port town, Angra do Heroísmo, which has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage site for its critical role in maritime history. Most other flights to the Azores land at the main international airport in Ponta Delgado, on the island of São Miguel. And while tourism will drive some of the demand, the new route will also serve a sizable Azorean community in Northern California, a TAP official told Afar.

Two additional new routes from TAP Air Portugal
TAP also announced two additional new summer 2025 routes: a new nonstop flight between Los Angeles and Lisbon and a new nonstop from Boston to Porto. On both routes, TAP will be the only carrier offering nonstop service.
At Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), which TAP served briefly in 1989–1990, the carrier will start with three flights a week on May 16, 2025, increasing to four times weekly by May 25. Introductory fares—available from now until December 17—start at $679 round trip to Portugal and from $599 to other points in Europe. The seasonal L.A. service will end on October 25, 2025.
Flights will be aboard a wide-body Airbus A330-900 neo. The planes have 34 business-class seats and 96 “comfort seats” with more legroom that standard coach seats—a welcome feature on a flight that will last nearly 13 hours (westbound). The same plane already operates on existing San Francisco flights.
The Portuguese carrier will start nonstop flights from Boston to Porto, northern Portugal’s gateway to the Douro Valley wine region, with four flights a week on May 14, 2025, also through October 25. Flights will be aboard narrow-body Airbus A321 LRs. Introductory fares start at $529 round trip, if purchased by December 17, 2024.
TAP currently flies from seven U.S. gateways: New York, Newark, Boston, Miami, Washington, D.C., San Francisco, and Chicago. And the airline is also known for its generous stopover program that allows travelers to spend time in Lisbon and Porto at a steal, before continuing on to destinations throughout Europe and beyond.

St. Regis’ Next Caribbean Resort Is Opening In The Dominican Republic
It's one of the most beautiful pieces of real estate in the Dominican Republic: the Punta Espada golf course.
If you know golf, you know Punta Espada — it’s one of the top courses in the Caribbean, a Jack Nicklaus designed stunner famous for its oceanside holes. But in a few months, this course will be famous for something else: a St. Regis resort.
The highly-anticipated St. Regis Cap Cana is opening in the Dominican Republic in the spring, and now it has an opening date: April 26, right on the edge of Punta Espada.
The Marriott-portfolio resort is now taking bookings for stays beginning April 26, 2025, according to St. Regis’ website.
The resort is going to have 200 rooms, including some swim-up rooms, along with 9 dining concepts anchored by a flagship eatery called Nina and a beach bar called Marla. There’s also a club-style bar called The Amber Room, and copious meeting space in the resort’s ballroom.
The property will include a spa, of course.
What about prices? Given the timing of the opening on the heels of the high season, you can find room rates as low as $587 per night.
It also adds a major new addition to the luxury segment in Cap Cana, which is home to two luxury resorts: the all-inclusive Sanctuary Cap Cana (also part of Marriott) and the Eden Roc Cap Cana, where we’ve stayed and absolutely loved (particularly its rooms and suites with private plunge pools).
St. Regis has a growing Caribbean footprint, including the St. Regis Kanai in the Mexican Caribbean and the soon-to-open St. Regis in Aruba.
So how do you get to Cap Cana? It’s part of greater Punta Cana, which means you fly directly to Punta Cana International Airport and take a short drive to the St. Regis. For more on cheap flight options check out Google Flights.

New First-Class Seats Are Coming To British Airways Flights—Here’s A First Look
The fancy new extra-wide first-class pods will feature ottomans that double as guest seats, cinema lighting, and individual closets, among other bells and whistles.

British Airways just unveiled new designs for first-class seats that are slated to take to the skies in 2026 on the world’s largest passenger aircraft. The new cabin design, which will be retrofitted across the airline’s fleet of double-decker Airbus A380s, will feature sliding privacy doors, 32-inch 4K entertainment systems, and the widest seats British Airways has ever flown.
With 60-inch-tall walls, which curve slightly inward, the seats will have a room-like feel. Each pod will have an ottoman, a stowable table, and 36.5-inch-wide seats (for context, the current British Airways first-class seat is just 22 inches wide). When fully reclined, the new seats will measure 79 inches long.
The new first-class seats will be situated in a 1-2-1 configuration and the two center seats will have a divider that can be lowered for pairs traveling together.Courtesy of British Airways
Guests who wish to use their own wireless headphones will be able to connect to the television screen by Bluetooth (all others will have access to headphones lent to them by the airline). There will also be a “cinema” mode for the lights (as well as “dine” and “relax” settings) to help set the mood. In addition to the TV monitor and the lights, the window shades and seat position will all be controllable with a 10-inch tablet, which will be adjacent to the air vent and charging ports (AC, USB-A, USB-C, and wireless).
There will be four seats in each row in a one-two-one configuration, so each seat has direct aisle access. The two seats in the middle will be separated by a divider that can be lowered to create a more communal space for those sitting next to their travel companion. Though for twosomes who aren’t able to book the neighboring seats, the ottoman can double as a buddy seat for face-to-face dining when the seatbelt light isn’t on. All told, there will be 12 seats in the forthcoming first-class cabin, down from the current 14-seat layout.
In lieu of overhead bins, each seat will include a closet-like compartment with room for a carry-on and a hanger for coats and jackets. Courtesy of British Airways
While there won’t be overhead storage in the first-class cabins, there will be an external red leather-lined compartment on the seat that fits a carry-on-sized suitcase and has space to hang coats and suit jackets. Inside the pod there will drawers for devices, smaller backpacks or purses, and a cupboard where amenities (such as a complimentary toiletry bag, snacks, and bottled water) will be kept.
The carrier hasn’t yet announced which routes the new first-class cabins will be used on. However, the airline currently uses its Airbus A380s between its London hub and U.S. airports, including Boston Logan International Airport, Chicago O’Hare International Airport, Los Angeles International Airport, Miami International Airport, and San Francisco International Airport. In addition to the first-class cabin getting a makeover, British Airways said business class, premium economy, and economy will also get a refresh, though the carrier hasn’t yet announced what those refreshed seats will look like.
In addition to British Airways, Singapore Airlines and Lufthansa have also recently unveiled new first- and business-class seats on their long-haul flights.

Air Canada Announces Policy To Charge Customers Who Bring Carry-On Bags Onto Planes
Beginning in January, Air Canada will be charging basic-economy travelers an extra fee for bringing aboard carry-on luggage larger than a handbag or small backpack.
Travelers on a budget will soon face fees for carry-on baggage despite booking the most affordable ticket option. offsuperphoto – stock.adobe.com
The fee will pertain to flights within the Americas.
Travelers who choose the budget-friendly fare option will be charged $25 for their first piece of carry-on luggage — which includes both roller bags and oversized rucksacks — and an additional $36 for a second.
If flyers fail to pay when booking their tickets or checking in for their flight, they will face a surcharge at the airport of $46.
Air Canada said that the new policy, which begins Jan. 3, “align[s] the airline’s fare structure with similar fare offerings by other Canadian carriers,” according to the Miami Herald, although it has drawn scrutiny from Canadian lawmakers.
“Let’s just say I’m not very happy today with what I’ve heard from Air Canada,” Federal Transport Minister Anita Anand stated in a recent interview. “I think they need to take a look at the persons that they are targeting with these excess fees. It is not acceptable.”
On Jan. 21, the airline will also charge the low-fare flyers for changing their seats automatically assigned at check-in, a policy, according to the Miami Herald, that was met with fierce backlash from customers earlier this year.
Air Canada’s carry-on policies follow in the footsteps of budget air carriers that charge an additional cost for carry-on baggage larger than the one free personal item.
Frontier, for one, has faced criticism for incentivizing gate agents to catch customers attempting to smuggle carry-on baggage and evading fees, although CEO Barry Biffle doubled down on the policy this week.
“These are shoplifters. These are people that are stealing,” he told Reuters. “It’s not equitable to everyone who follows the rules.”

The Longest Flight in The World Is Getting A Luxurious Upgrade
At just under 19 hours, Singapore Airlines’ flight between Singapore and New York is the world’s longest flight—and it will soon be a lot more comfortable for some.
A sneak peek at the forthcoming business-class cabins coming to Singapore Airlines’ long-haul flights.Courtesy of Singapore Airlines
Singapore Airlines recently announced plans to introduce all-new front-of-the-aircraft cabins across its fleet of seven Airbus A350-900ULR (ultra-long-range) planes. The carrier, which regularly ranks among the world’s best airlines, uses that aircraft to fly what is currently the world’s longest flight route between Singapore and New York, clocking in at just under 19 hours and covering 9,585 air miles. The plane is also used for additional long-haul flights from Singapore, including to Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Seattle.
“The new first-class and business-class seat designs will incorporate thoughtful elements that push the boundaries of comfort, luxury, and modernity,” Singapore Airlines CEO Goh Choon Phong said in a press release.
This will be the first time first-class seats will be available on the ULR aircraft, and they are slated to debut sometime in 2027. What exactly those new seats will look like, the airline hasn’t said, though it did release a sneak-peek rendering showing a suite stretching across at least three windows and equipped with a wide-screen TV and a lie-flat chair. (Singapore does have first-class on its Boeing 777-3000ERs and Airbus A380s, the latter featuring suites, which include twin beds and separate armchairs.)
Singapore Airlines’ A380s feature first-class suites that can be combined into a larger sleeping area.Courtesy of Singapore Airlines
The carrier has also been tight-lipped about what is in store for the revamped business class. However, a glimpse offered in a rendering shows sliding privacy doors, something that is absent from the airline’s current business-class seats and that has been a growing trend in the aviation industry. (In recent years, Air France, American Airlines, and Turkish Airlines, among other airlines, have added or announced new door-equipped business-class seats.)
“Over the past six years, we have extensively engaged customers and stakeholders in the design of our next-generation long-haul cabin products, anticipating their evolving preferences and expectations down to the finest details,” Goh said.
Currently, the ULR planes have 67 business-class seats and 94 premium economy seats (there are no economy seats, partly for the comfort of passengers on nearly day-long flights and partly because it helps cut down on weight, an essential factor on lengthy journeys). After the retrofit, the aircraft will feature 4 first-class suites, 70 business-class seats, and 58 premium economy seats.
In addition to the A350-900ULRs, Singapore Airlines is also redoing 34 of its long-haul Airbus A350-900s, with 42 of the new business-class seats, 24 premium economy seats, and 192 economy seats. (The latter two, the airline said, would “be refreshed to enhance the travel experience for customers” but offered no additional information on what that would look like.) These planes will enter service in 2026.
Singapore Airlines said the new seat designs will be the same as those on its future Boeing 777-9s. However, given that the 777s have repeatedly been delayed and aren’t expected to enter commercial service before 2026, the A350s could potentially be the first opportunity travelers have to experience the new seats if the Boeing aircraft continue to experience postponements.
In recent years, airlines have been investing heavily in revamping and expanding their premium cabins, from Emirates expanding its premium economy offering to United upgrading its Polaris international business-class seats.
However, many carriers have eliminated long-haul first-class cabins in favor of additional business-class seats. American Airlines, for example, is in the process of discontinuing first-class seats on all international flights and replacing them with more business-class seats, as passengers are less willing to splurge for first class, according to the airline. Business class and premium economy, on the other hand, strike a balance between luxury and profitability.
When asked why Singapore Airlines was adding first class when other airlines were moving away from it, James Boyd, vice president of public relations in the Americas, told Afar, “We are introducing first class to our nonstop services from the U.S. in response to consistent demand we see for premium air travel, particularly on the world’s longest flights.”

American Airlines’ Newest Route Is A Nonstop Flight That Takes You Directly To This Dominican Republic Resort
It has always been one of the biggest stories about the Dominican Republic’s Casa de Campo. It’s more than a resort. It’s a golf destination. It’s a villa destination. It’s a world-class wellness getaway, a culinary Mecca, a superyacht marina, an arts hub.
Playa Minitas at Casa de Campo.
But what you may not realize is that it’s also an airport. That’s because the La Romana International Airport is on the grounds of the 7,000-acre resort. And now La Romana has a major new flight.
On Dec. 5, American Airlines kicks off new, daily nonstop flight between Miami and La Romana, meaning you can hop on an AA jet and fly directly to Casa de Campo. In other words, land, go through customs and immigration, find your golf cart and head to the hotel.
That’s exactly the plan, Casa de Campo’s Jason Kycek told Caribbean Journal. “Guests and home owners alike can now fly directly into our airport and arrive within minutes of landing.”
It’s the latest evolution of “a long standing relationship that spans decades” between the resort and AA, Kycek said.
The new route is yet another major lift for a resort that has been one of the most popular places to stay in the Caribbean, particularly in the post-pandemic period, as travelers have been drawn to its unrivaled list of amenities and its luxurious, spaced-out, hotel-and-villa-focused accommodations.
And we’ve seen why on the numerous times we’ve stayed at the property: it’s a place that’s able to satisfy an endless list of traveler demands. For families, you can find a luxury, staffed villa with all the space and comfort you need.
One of the many oceanside holes at Pete Dye’s legendary Teeth of the Dog course.
Maybe you’re a couple looking for the perfect blend of wellness (yes, there’s a new state-of-the-art, 20,000-square-foot destination spa) and golf (Pete Dye-designed courses, anyone?). Or maybe you’re looking for a group trip that mixes a little bit of everything.
There’s even a new resort-within-a-resort called Premier Club, which takes the “Casa” experience and raises it to another level, with sparkling rooms and suites and a location that’s just steps away from the spa and the main hotel. We called it the new must-visit resort in the Caribbean after our recent stay at the resort, and we meant it.
In recent years, it’s a Caribbean hotel that just keeps getting better, from the new hotel to a growing collection of cool events (including the recently-concluded Food & Wine Festival) and the current celebration of the property’s 50th birthday.
The Chavon river, which runs alongside the Dye Fore golf course.
It’s a place where every emphasis is made on making things accessible to the guest, whether it’s a recreated Italian village, an authentic Mexican taqueria or, in this week’s case — what is now one of the easiest flights in the Caribbean: just book your ticket, check your bag and fly right to Casa de Campo.
So what about cost?
For flights next week, you can book a roundtrip in the Main cabin to La Romana for as low as $269, and $1,363 in business class.

The TSA-Approved Hack That Allows Travelers To Bring A Bottle Of Water Through Airport Security

As millions of Americans take to the skies over the holidays and New Year, some will likely be searching for easy travel hacks to help make their journeys a little less painful.
Among the many flying tips making the rounds in recent years on TikTok, this one continues to pop up: how to get a full bottle of water through a US airport security checkpoint.
Well, it turns out the answer is simple — freeze it, first.
No, you wouldn’t be breaking any rules. The US Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is actually on board with this one.
“Frozen liquid items are allowed through the checkpoint as long as they are frozen solid when presented for screening,” a TSA spokesperson confirmed to CNN by email.
“If frozen liquid items are partially melted, slushy or have any liquid at the bottom of the container, they must meet 3-1-1 liquids requirements,” they added, referring to the TSA’s rule that allows each passenger to bring liquids, gels and aerosols in containers that are less than 3.4 ounces or 100 milliliters and can all fit into a single quart-sized bag.
What to do if your frozen bottle starts to melt? Drink it before you put your items into the security bin.
Just remember: this rule will also apply if you decide to fly home after family Thanksgiving with a bag of leftovers. Most would agree that slurping back a mouthful of partially melted gravy isn’t going to be a pleasant pre-boarding experience.
And there are of course exceptions to the 3-1-1 rule — the TSA allows larger amounts of medically necessary liquids, gels and aerosols in carry-on luggage, and these need to be declared to officers at the security checkpoint for inspection.
Ultimately, the best advice is to not pack any foods or frozen liquid items into your carry-on luggage that you would be upset to throw away.
“The final decision rests with the TSA officer on whether an item is allowed through the checkpoint,” reads the TSA website.
What’s the point?
Some travelers question why someone would bother to freeze a bottle of water before their flight given most airports now have free refilling stations. Malaika Casal/Alamy Stock Photo
Not surprisingly, some travelers just can’t warm up to the thought of bringing frozen bottles through security.
Many who commented on popular TikTok videos and blogs about the hack said they didn’t see the point, given you can just take an empty bottle through security and fill it up for free at the widely available water dispensers most airports now offer in departure halls.
Others couldn’t imagine why someone would go to all that trouble just to avoid paying for a bottle of water on the other side, regardless of the inflated prices. A few even pointed out that the ice might melt too slowly for a passenger to even have time to drink it if they’re on a short flight.
Meanwhile, some travelers expressed surprise that this hack wasn’t common knowledge; the TSA has issued regular reminders on its social media platforms.
Among the frequent flyers who feel the idea has its merits is aviation blogger John E. DiScala, aka Johnny Jet, who has traveled over 100,000 miles a year since 1995 and visited over 100 countries.
“While I’ve never personally brought a frozen water bottle through security, there are times when this travel hack makes sense,” he told CNN.
“Yes, you can always fill your bottle up post-security, which is what I always do. But sometimes, you can’t find a refilling station, there’s a long line or you just don’t have enough time to do it before boarding. In these instances, it would be nice to already have your ice-cold water with you.”
He also pointed to recent aviation disruptions as a reason to pop a bottle into the freezer before your flight.
“Water from a refilling station is fine but in extreme heat, nothing will beat ice-cold water,” said DiScala.
“This past summer, there were many stories about passengers stuck on delayed flights, sitting on the tarmac, who I’m sure wished they had some cold water to drink to stay hydrated.”
‘It’s always smart to be prepared’
When asked if some travelers are motivated to bring frozen bottles through US airport security checkpoints simply for the thrill of outsmarting “the man,” DiScala agreed that may be part of it, but stresses this trick really could come in handy.
“Sure, people love travel hacks that make them feel like they’re beating the system — like shoving an extra carry-on bag’s worth of clothes into a travel pillow — but this one is not only easy and inexpensive but it could really help to keep you safe, hydrated and healthy,” he said.
“I never like to be at the mercy of the flight attendants for water so it’s always smart to be prepared and have your own.”

Saint Lucia’s New All-Inclusive Resort Now Has An Opening Date
The Pitons. The rhythm of Rodney Bay. The shopping in Castries. The marvelous mix of flavors (Orlando’s, anyone?). The vibrant green of the rainforest. The views of, well, just about everything.
Saint Lucia has a way of enchanting its visitors, from just about the moment you land at Hewanorra International Airport. It’s always occupied a unique place in the Caribbean — it’s one of those romantic, exotic destinations whose name seems to conjure up Caribbean fantasies among travelers. We get it — we’ve traveled all over Saint Lucia, and there is a kind of magic about the place.
It’s also home to a unique tapestry of resorts, from its famous three-walled hotels like Jade Mountain to boutique cacao-plantation stays like Hotel Chocolat to the lovely family-owned Bay Gardens Resorts-branded properties.
And early next year, the island is about to have another one: the all-inclusive Secrets St Lucia, the first-ever Secrets-branded all-inclusive on the island and the second Hyatt-inclusive resort, joining the existing Zoetry Marigot Bay.
The new Secrets St Lucia also has an opening date, as confirmed by Caribbean Journal: Feb. 7, 2025, according to the Hyatt
So what do you need to know about it? Secrets St Lucia will have 355 rooms, in a lush location near the northwestern coast of the island.
In keeping with the Secrets brand, it will be an adults-only property, with direct beachfront, with 13 different food and beverage concepts like an Italian eatery called Portfoinio and a French restaurant, “Morgan’s Pier.”
There will also be a Preferred Club, a Hyatt Inclusive Collection product we’ve loved in other destinations with a special Preferred Club Lounge Bar and a Preferred Club Pool Bar.
Secrets Saint Lucia is opening in February.
There’s also a Secrets Spa with a hydro circuit, a main pool, and a fitness center, among other amenities.
So what about cost?
A standard “deluxe tropical view king” room will run about $729 per night, or $5,100 for a week, on the resort’s special opening rate.
For a swim-out room, the price goes up to $911 per night (do it, we insist).
Preferred Club rooms start at $1,021 per night, with swim-out Preferred Club rooms priced at $1,057 per night.
Heading to Saint Lucia? The island has more flights than ever, including a new Saturday service from New York JFK that starts Dec. 7.

Classic rock band signs for more residency shows at the Las Vegas Strip Sphere.
Sphere Las Vegas has entertained hundreds of thousands of music fans since it opened in September 2023 with its spectacular multi-media venue that delivers immersive experiences with the latest audio and video technology including a wraparound LED screen and advanced sound system.
Legendary rock band U2 opened Sphere Entertainment's Sphere Las Vegas on Sept. 29, 2023, with a 40-show U2/UV Achtung Baby Live at the Sphere residency.
After U2 closed its residency on March 2, 2024, in the 18,600-seat venue which can hold a 20,000-standing capacity, popular jam band Phish followed for a quick mini-residency with four sold-out shows on April 18-21.
Phish might someday return to the Sphere for another four-show engagement, or maybe longer, as the band has booked four-night runs in the past. The band will perform a four-night engagement at New York's Madison Square Garden from Dec. 28 to 31, 2024, for a New Year's Eve holiday run.
Ultimate jam band Grateful Dead spinoff band Dead & Company followed Phish with 30 shows at the Las Vegas Sphere from May 16 through Aug. 10, 2024. The band's predecessor Grateful Dead often performed shows in Las Vegas, and Dead & Co. can be expected to bring its popular residency back to the Sphere possibly after several months.
Since wrapping up their Sphere residency, Dead & Co. has been quiet about their plans. No other limited engagements or residencies have been scheduled in 2024 or 2025.
Dead & Co. frontman Bob Weir, however, is headlining the Dead Ahead music festival Jan. 9-13 at Riviera, Cancun, Mexico.
Finally, popular rock band the Eagles are lengthening their residency at Sphere Las Vegas on the Strip with the addition of four new shows on April 4, 5, 11, and 12, 2025, bringing the total engagement to 32 shows so far, the band revealed on Nov. 26.
The Eagles have not revealed a final ending date for their residency.

The Eagles have been incrementally adding shows to their residency since June 13 when the band unveiled the original eight shows of the residency for September and October 2024, and then five days later added four more shows on Nov. 1, 2, 8, and 9.
The band on June 26 added another four shows on Dec. 6, 7, 13, and 14, and in July added four more shows on Jan. 17, 18, 24, and 25, 2025.
In October, the Eagles expanded their residency from 20 to 24 shows with the addition of four weekend shows in February and then added four more shows to its engagement on March 7, 8, 14, and 15, 2025, expanding the total run to 28 performances before adding more shows.
It remains a mystery about who will follow the Eagles with the next residency at the Sphere. Rumors in 2023 claimed that One Direction frontman Harry Styles would be next up after U2, but that never happened.
Surveys have revealed that music fans would like to see Lady Gaga, Coldplay, or Beyonce as the next Sphere residency, but Sphere Entertainment has not hinted who the next headliner will be.

Ontario Government Approves Developing Toronto Power Generating Station Into A Five-Star Boutique Hotel Near Niagara Falls
The Ontario government is giving the greenlight to Niagara Parks Commission (NPC) to redevelop the Toronto Power Generating Station (TPGS) into a five-star boutique hotel near the brink of Niagara Falls, which will create good-paying, sustainable jobs and boost local economies in the region. Once complete, the new attraction will accommodate the growing number of tourists visiting Niagara and will include amenities such as indoor and outdoor public viewing areas and a free museum and art gallery.
"This transformative investment to restore and reimagine the Toronto Power Generating Station is welcome news for Niagara," said Sam Oosterhoff, MPP for Niagara West. "The restoration of this historic monument to our region’s legacy of energy innovation is part of our government’s plan to support Niagara as a key tourist destination, not only attracting visitors from coast to coast in North America, but from around the globe."
Funded entirely through a $200 million investment by Society Developments in collaboration with Pearle Hospitality, the redevelopment of the historic hydroelectric power generating station will see the site repurposed – after sitting vacant for 50 years – into Niagara Region’s first and only five-star hotel. The new and multi-faceted visitor attraction will include a theatre and various restaurants, as well as cost-free activities such as a free museum, art gallery and public viewing areas overlooking the Falls.
“Niagara Falls offers a one-of-a-kind opportunity for travellers from around the world and our government believes in its potential as an economic driver for the Niagara Region,” said Stan Cho, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Gaming. “We are proud to support the transformation of the Toronto Power Generating Station into a spectacular hotel that will create a world-class experience for all visitors, helping the region grow as a top-tier international tourist destination.”
The Niagara Parks Commission (NPC), an agency of the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Gaming, will retain ownership of the property. With the Ontario government’s approval and a lease agreement in place, Pearle Hospitality will become NPC’s newest tenant.
“This is great news for the whole Niagara Region. This project will give the Toronto Power Generating Station a new purpose and identity, while creating new jobs, encouraging tourism sector growth and stimulating the local economy,” said Bob Gale, Chair of the Niagara Parks Commission.
“This project will be transformational for hospitality in Niagara Falls and for the Niagara Region,” said Jim Diodati, mayor of Niagara Falls. “It will expand and elevate our offering exponentially and will provide a unique and unparalleled opportunity to experience the natural wonder of the falls. Coupled with our culture of service and hospitality, we know we’re about to witness the next steps in our evolution here in Niagara Falls come to life.”
“The redevelopment of Toronto Power embodies the essence of Niagara Parks’ historic mandate as the environmental and cultural stewards of the Niagara River corridor,” said David Adames, CEO of Niagara Parks Commission. “Through private-sector investment, we will preserve a significant piece of Niagara’s history while growing tourism to the region.”
