Crystal Cruises Announces Deal To Purchase The S.S. United States
The iconic ocean liner the S.S. United States that still holds the speed record for a Trans Atlantic crossing
may sail again after being purchased by Crystal Cruise Line, one of the leading luxury cruise companies.
The ship, in port in South Philadelphia for the past 20 years, has been saved from the scrap yard by hundreds of thousands of dollars raised by the non-profit S.S. United States Conservancy that currently owns the ship. The ship sailed from New York to ports in Europe from 1952-1969, hosting celebrities and important political figures of the day and is still the largest ocean liner built in the United States. It is estimated that the cost of restoring the ship will be at least $800,000,000.
