Abadía Retuerta LeDomaine, the exclusive abbey hotel and winery dating from 1146 in Spain’s Duero wine region, has spanned nearly a millennium of history with a new amenity for guests: The property is 900 years old but it’s the first hotel in Europe to offer its guests the hottest new technology of 2014, Google Glass.
“Google Glass is the next step in our complete transformation from an ancient and storied abbey to a sophisticated modern hotel offering the highest level of luxury and service in a sublime historic ambiance,” said Andres Araya, managing director of Abadía Retuerta LeDomaine. “With Google Glass, we are introducing our guests to an exciting new 21st-century experience in a 12th-century setting.”
Abadía Retuerta LeDomaine has eight of the wearable computers – which are like eyeglasses but with only one lens that functions as a monitor, plus a microphone and a speaker at your ear –available for guest use. LeDomaine’s guests can enjoy the many apps and functions of Google Glass, such as: taking pictures (with a verbal command or just the blink of your eye) to post and share on social media in real time; make short videos; watch videos about LeDomaine including a general hotel video and a LeDomaine Art Tour; stargaze with a gps-based app that allows you to see the alignment of the stars above at that moment in time; browse information on the internet that has been formatted for Google Glass; and make phone calls. The photos that guests take with their Google Glass are downloaded to a memory stick for them to take home. As new apps become available for Google Glass, LeDomaine is adding them.
Imbued with the charm and lore of a by-gone age, Abadía Retuerta LeDomaine takes guests back in time while immersing them in the comforts and luxuries of today’s most savvy hospitality. The medieval abbey and estate of LeDomaine is a grand travel experience that overwhelms the senses with its enduring history, stately architecture, majestic ambiance, world-class culinary experiences by one of Spain’s most celebrated chefs, acclaimed vineyards and 22 regal accommodations.
Abadía Retuerta LeDomaine opened in 2012 after a complete restoration that sensitively and imaginatively brought the property into the 21st century – and earned it a Europa Nostra Award from the European Union for conserving cultural heritage. Newly opened LeDomaine was the first hotel in Spain to offer a full butler service and the only Spanish establishment for inclusion in the 2013 edition of the prestigious Relais & Châteaux hotel and restaurant guide. The hotel is currently converting the original stables into eight new guest rooms and a Spa, which will be completed in 2015.
The Refectorio, once the abbey’s dining hall, is a sanctuary of haute cuisine under the direction of Andoni Luis Aduriz, one of Spain’s superstar chefs whose heralded Mugaritz restaurant in San Sebastian has Two Michelin Stars. In addition to the Refectorio, guests dine outdoors in the Cloisters courtyard and in the atmospheric setting of the Wine Cellar.
Of the estate’s 1,730 acres of primefarmland,500 acres are dedicated to the vine. The winery produces award-winning vintages of exceptional pedigree and is among the most advanced in Europe in combining ancient wine-making traditions with cutting-edge technology.
Abadía Retuerta LeDomaine is a two-hour drive or train ride from Madrid, and a 30-minute drive from Valladolid.
