The North Terminal at Gatwick Airport outside London, Britain’s second-busiest airport after Heathrow, was closed around 10 a.m. on Saturday as a precaution, officials said.
The police were summoned around 9:30 a.m. after a man discarded an item, raising suspicions, officials said. The man was detained for questioning.
The Associated Press quoted Detective Superintendent Nick May as saying that the matter was under investigation and that it was too early to say what the item may be. “Given the events in Paris on Friday evening, there is heightened awareness around any such incident, and it is best that we treat the matter in all seriousness,” he said.
British Airways warned that extra security checks ordered by the French government would lead to delays.
The company also offered passengers the opportunity to put off flights booked from Nov. 14 to Nov. 17 or to reroute to other destinations
