If you’re a well-intentioned animal lover, you might jump at the chance to visit an animal sanctuary on your next trip.
However, some of these animal rescue centers may be more focused on cashing in on your visit than providing a safe environment for its animals.
What are some signs that a wildlife sanctuary may not be legitimate? If the sanctuary offers you direct contact with the animals or if you’re allowed to ride, hug, or take selfies with the animals, these might be possible signs of trouble at a conservation center. Also, pay attention if there’s a large number of baby animals.
Legitimate rescue centers do not permit captive breeding so that resources go instead to rehabilitating the rescue animals. And if you’re still wondering if an animal rescue center is legitimate, check out the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries, and see if it is accredited.
