6 Of The Best Things To Do In Rome

The capital of Italy is one of the most famous cities in the world. Its roots echo throughout history, as remnants and relics of distant eras blend in with Rome’s modern-day cosmopolitan nature. These unique characteristics allow the city to stand as an attractive destination opportunity for different typologies of visitors: whether you are looking to seize Rome’s vibrant night life and youth culture or you are looking for an unforgettable journey through timeless culture, you are truly in for a treat.
“When in Rome” you really can’t miss the following top 6 attractions in the Italian capital:
The Sistine Chapel, located in the Apostolic Palace complex (the official residence of the Pope) and theVatican Museum are two of the most popular attractions in the world, to the point that they reached the status of iconic landmarks of the city, in the eyes of tourists and locals alike. If you manage to make your way past the endless lines of visitors from all over the world who come to enjoy these attractions, you’ll have the chance to experience something unique. The Sistine Chapel is a stunning example of architecture and art, while the Vatican Museum is an outstanding parade of priceless treasures spanning from classic heritage (Roman, Greek) to the modern day.

Taste the best pizza in the world at Pizzarium
Italians surely know a thing or two about great pizza, and Pizzarium is definitely one of Rome’s hotspots for a tasty slice of the country’s favourite meal. From classic combinations that never go out of favor (staples such as Margherita, Marinara or Capricciosa are true pizza “evergreens”) to more adventurous flavors, Pizzarium offers a truly overwhelming selection of menu items. This isn’t only an establishment where to find great pizza: prices are more than fair, making for a budget-friendly lunch option. The restaurant is located in Via della Meloria, 43, 00136, Roma.

Have a nice walk at Aventino and think about the civilization
The city of Rome is famously spread throughout seven hills. These hills have been mentioned in local legends since the beginning of the Roman civilization, inspiring history and therefore unleashing a chain of events that quite literally led to “the world as we know it” today. The southernmost of the seven Roman hills is called “Colle Aventino”, and it still stands out as one of the most charming and old-fashioned areas of the city.
Aventino, Rome
Because of its relative isolation, it feels like Aventino didn’t experience the same pace of modernization that appears in other more central areas of the city. These pleasantly old-fashioned vibes make for a pleasant location where locals and tourists alike can experience some rare traditional Italian charm and overlook the “eternal city” from a unique, privileged perspective. Colle Aventino is even home to some of the best eateries and restaurants in the city!
Sitting down for a coffee at Villa Medici is not just about taking a nice break: it is a true experience. Villa Medici feels luxurious and high-end: the beauty of the enchanting premises is only matched by the Villa’s long and interesting history, as some of the most influential figures in world history have walked through its rooms throughout the decades. As you would expect from such an establishment, the service and attention to quality are absolutely impeccable. Viale della Trinità dei Monti, 1, 00187 Roma.
Villa Medicci, Rome
With its classic, timeless atmosphere, Hotel de Russie is one of the city’s current hotspots, attracting some of the trendiest inhabitants of Rome, particularly around 6pm,; about the right time for an aperitif to remember. Between lavish servings and luxurious surrounding, it’s easy to see why this place is highly regarded as one of the city’s most exclusive locations. Hotel De Russie is located in Via del Babuino, 9, 00187 Roma.
Hotel de Russie, Rome
If you are traveling to Italy, chances are, food is going to be a huge part of your experience. Italians truly care about the quality of their food, and travelers won’t have any troubles finding great eateries anyday, anytime. In Rome, there are some truly amazing dining opportunities in all areas of the city and for pockets of all sizes.
Aroma Restaurant, Palazzo Manfredi
Having said that, if you are seriously looking for the very best in terms of food in the Italian capital, then look into a night at the famed Aroma restaurant. This Michelin-starred establishment is located within the premises of the enchanting Manfredi palace (Palazzo Manfredi). This is where diners are treated to a high-end culinary experience that bridges the gaps between creativity and tradition. We can only advise one thing:….book in advance! The restaurant is located in Via Labicana, 125, Roma.

5 Experiences Not To Miss In Hungary’s Budapest

Often referred to as the Pearl of the Danube, or The Heart of Europe, these warm and rich labels sit at the core of Budapest. It’s rich in history and heritage, yet full of a youthful energy and vibrancy. A fizzing nightlife, great restaurants and a diversity of activities that include relaxing river cruises and thermal baths, ice skating, exploring cave systems and live action games.
Budapest City
Here are the 5 experiences you cannot miss during your stay in Budapest:
1. Budapest’s best view
The guide books of Budapest usually write about the views from the top of the Citadel, from the castle hill and from the top of the Saint Stephan’s Basilica. But you don’t need to climb up so high for an eye-catching view! Just walk to the middle of Margaret Bridge and be astonished by this gorgeous city! Another great spot is on the Buda side at Batthyány square – looking back at The Parliament house over the river is a sight you’ll never forget!
Budapest's best view
2. Ship ride and walk at Rómaifürdő
A ship ride on the Danube river to Rómaifürdő is a must. Ask a friendly local on the ship to show you the tourist attractions on your way. In summer time take a leisurely stroll at Rómaifürdő. It’s where the locals hang out, escaping from the city for a few hours rest under the shady river bank trees. There are many restaurants and bars but, if you’d like to taste something typically local, buy a lángos at one of the buffets!
Ship ride
3. Special vehicles tour in the Buda Hills
Start your tour at Széll Kálmán tér and take a short ride on tram no. 61 to Városmajor. From here take the Cogwheel Railway train to Széchenyi-hegy (Széchenyi Hill). Then take the Children’s Railway to János-hegy (János Hill), the highest peak in Budapest. The Erzsébet lookout tower offers panoramic views of the city and the Buda Hills. Finally, take the two-way Chairlift (Libegő) system, which offers a beautiful panorama along the way from János-hegy down to Zugliget.
Buda Hills view
4. Live action games
Live action games inspired by computer games and horror movies are mushrooming in Budapest. The mystic atmosphere is spooky but not frightening. The games combine riddles and physical tasks with the aim to escape from a room. To find your way out you need to solve various puzzles using creativity and common sense. The adrenaline kicks in as soon as the time starts. Few succeed but it’s real fun and an unusual way to spend an hour!
Live action games
5. Vibrant club and pub life
Kazinczy Street is not to be missed… beer gardens in inner atmospheric courtyards, tiny bars, and ruin pubs (which are unused, deserted buildings that have been turned into pubs). Don’t be afraid of the shabby exteriors… Lonely Planet voted Szimpla Kert the third best bar in the world! Also pop in to Kőleves, Mika Tivadar, Ellátó Kert and Bobek. And don’t miss Gozsdu Udvar’s trendy scene that’s bustling with life.
Bar
Now those are some pretty awesome and unique experiences! And, if you have time, there are many more. The outdoor ice rink at Heroes’ Square? One of the many thermal baths? Or the Christmas markets which run from mid-November to get you in the festive mood? Have fun and fall in love!

10 Of The Most Luxurious London Experiences

Ah, London. One of the world’s most exciting, cosmopolitan, culture-rich and diverse cities. If you've never been, this sprawling mass of fun, fashion, food and high living should definitely be on your bucket list. But what to do when you arrive? Well, luckily for you, there are plenty of luxurious experiences to immerse yourself in. Here’s our pick of the finest…
London at night
1. Shopping at Harrods
Based in the heart of Knightsbridge and oozing class, the world’s most famous (and largest) department store has a wealth to offer well-heeled shoppers. Here’s where you can stock up on lush designer clothes, hard-to-find perfumes and high-end cosmetics – and don’t forget to visit the Food Hall. If you could spend all day grazing at deli counters, be prepared to part with a small fortune here. Founded in 1834, the store has stood the test of time, and up to 300,000 people visit during peak shopping times. There are 330 departments to peruse and a number of haute services on offer, including a to-die-for personal shopping service called ‘By Appointment’, a tailor, a wine steward and a watch repair service. You can even buy gold bars off the shelf at Harrods Bank. Don’t worry if you regret your purchase, though – you can always sell your bar back to Harrods at a later date.
Harrods
2. Picnic in Hyde Park
We’re not talking about a rug laid on the ground and a hastily-assembled selection of sandwiches bought from a supermarket. Oh, no. To picnic in style, indulge in a Fortnum & Mason hamper and feast in style. The Belgravia Hamper will set you back a cool £500, but when it includes foods like wild Scottish smoked salmon, venison salami, organic Stilton, and a suitably outsized tin of Chocolossus Biscuits, not to mention vintage Champagne, how can you argue? If money’s no object and you fancy delighting someone you love during the festive season, for a cool £1,000 you can get your hands on The Windsor Hamper. It includes triple-smoked ham, salmon, preserves, a magnum of vintage Champagne, rich Christmas puddings and whiskies. We’d recommend picking a day when it’s fairly dry and wrapping up warmly if you’re going to enjoy a winter picnic, but they’re just as romantic as summer ones, if not more so.
Picnic
3. Stay at Claridge’s
This hotel is, quite simply, the best place to stay in London. Frequented by the creme de la creme of London society, referenced in American Psycho and the hotel of choice for honeymooning A-listers, this is the place where your every whim will be catered for. Expect unparalleled service and the softest bed you’ve ever encountered. If you’re feeling lazy, you don’t even have to leave the hotel to be entertained – there’s a state-of-the-art gym to enjoy, and there’s even a spa. If you fancy really pushing the boat out, book the Deluxe King room; it’s 50 sq. m of unrivalled decadence. There’s a king sized bed, a marble en-suite bathroom and flatscreen TVs in each room. Fera, the hotel’s new restaurant, is run by Michelin-starred chef Simon Rogan, who offers a ‘creative and natural take on modern British cuisine’.
Claridge's
4. See opera at the Royal Opera House
From Madame Butterfly to La Bohème, the Royal Opera House is the only place to watch world-renowned performances. The best bit? It’s located in the heart of Covent Garden, so you’ll be in the heart of the West End when the performance is over. Current performances include Don Quixote, Tristan und Isolde, and Swan Lake. A seat in the orchestera stalls will set you back around £115. Don’t forget to watch out for the ‘phantom’ that supposedly stalks the building – in 1999, workmen on the site reported being hit by flying objects.
Royal Opera House
5. Enjoy a tipple at Kettner’s
This Soho restaurant boasts a Champagne bar that can obliterate any hangover in the blink of an eye. This stylish 1920s-themed bar will transport you back to a bygone age when glamour ruled, so make sure you dress appropriately. Don’t be fooled into thinking Kettner’s is a one-trick pony; their traditional Sunday roast is spectacular (the saddle of Welsh lamb is especially good) and their afternoon tea is a wonderful post-shopping treat. Traditional finger sandwiches, homemade scones and a mouthwatering selection of sweet treats, including lemon meringue pie and coconut parfait, are on offer.
Kettners
6. Make time for a spa
The Agua Spa at Sanderson, tucked away in the heart of Fitzrovia, is the last word in decadent relaxation – and provides ‘pampering, spiritual relief, and tranquility to all who enter’. Sounds good to us. This 10,000 square-foot idyll has 14 all-white treatment rooms, a chill-out zone and meditation beds. Their specialities are their facials and massages – bliss. A 75-minute hot stone massage will set you back £135, and the Eve Lom Signature Facial, which lasts two hours, costs £270.
Spa
7. Enjoy Dinner with Heston Blumenthal
Dinner is Heston’s London offering, and while the Fat Duck celebrates flamboyant, hi-tech dishes, the meals on offer here are historic dishes with a professional twist. Crowd-pleasing favourites include roast marrowbone, cod in cider and Hereford ribeye steak – and don’t miss the brown bread ice cream. If you’re looking to impress, book a seat at the Chef’s Table, where you and up to five of your dining companions can observe Dinner’s ‘inner sanctum’ and watch the chefs at work. They’ll even explain to you the methods they’re using and how each dish is created, so if you’re looking to improve your culinary flair, pay close attention.
Dinner Heston
8. Leave the Tube for everyone else
Public transport can be a nightmare in London, and taxis nearly always have the aroma of boozy businessmen. Splash out and book yourself a chauffeur-driven car for the length of your stay – and don’t forget to order some Champagne for the drive. Hic.
Limo
9. Shop till someone else drops
If your retail therapy is taking it out of you, you can hire personal shoppers to do the hard work for you. Harvey Nichols and Selfridges both offer this service – as do Westfield – so if you’re looking for that perfect outfit for the opera, someone is sure to be able to help you. If you’d like the man in your life to smarten up his act, Daniel Johnson, who has worked with Kate Moss, Naomi Campbell and Gerard Butler, works exclusively with men. Expect your other half to arrive back at the hotel looking totally transformed.
Personal shopping
10. Get a sugar high on the London Eye
If you’d like to indulge your love of fine chocolates, delight someone special and enjoy a few glasses of fizz, you can hire one of the London Eye’s pods for a chocolate-tasting tour. You’ll even be given a luxury goody bag to take home. If you’re after something a little more intimate, book the Cupid’s Capsule. For £350, you can enjoy priority boarding, a 30-minute trip on the London Eye, a bottle of Pommery Brut Royal Champagne and a luxury box of Hotel Chocolat Pink Champagne Truffles.

7 Of The Best Quirky Things To Do In Dublin

Am I proud to be Irish? The answer is that I most definitely am. As a nation we’re known to be one of the friendliest in the world, and most of us have a great sense of humor. We also love to embrace characters and experiences that are a bit different and quirky. I recently read a wonderful post by a Brazilian man on what Ireland means to him. He captures it perfectly when he says. “The beauty of Ireland is above all its people with their culture and traditions.”
If you want to experience my hometown, Dublin, Ireland, in ways that celebrate its people, culture, and traditions, then here are some of the best quirky things to do in Dublin. The list is not in any particular order, nor is it meant to be definitive – I've aimed to give you a small selection of some of the top quirky things to do, that will enrich your time in Dublin. There’s quite a few more, so keep an eye out for a follow up article.
The first listing holds a special place in my heart, as I feel it really captures the essence of us Irish. But not only that – it’s located in Dalkey, which is a beautiful spot, that has attracted its fair share of household names to buy property there – Bono, Neil Jordan and Chris De Burgh to name a few…
Biddy’s Cottage, Dalkey
Experience the heart and soul of the Irish and Ireland. Get ready to be captivated, enthralled and charmed in the beautiful setting of the enchanting Biddy’s Cottage in Dalkey, overlooking the sea. Although Biddy doesn't compare herself to any “seanachaí” – which is an Irish traditional storyteller, the mood of her cottage transports you back to the feeling of the days when seanchaithe were an everyday part of our culture.
Coliemore Harbour with Dalkey Island in the background
Storytelling in our culture is considered an art. The seanchaithe make use of a selection of different storytelling conventions. The content and tone of the stories are widely varied, with repertoires which span from the humorous to the deeply tragic. In Biddy’s case, she and her family have had more than their fair share of personal tragedy, which no doubt gives her the compassion and immense depth of feeling that she has. Her storytelling is warm and often hilariously witty.
Biddy McLauglin
In a newspaper interview, Biddy said: “I've had cowboys from Texas come in, hen nights, farmers, businessmen, walkers, you name it,” Biddy tells me. “It’s become a magical place,” she smiles. On top of this Biddy also offers bespoke corporate evenings in her cottage.
The Irish storytelling tradition has mostly been passed down from generation to generation. In Biddy’s case she shares her raw passion for the past, with her Dad. Biddy’s Dad, Owenie ‘Owens’ Mc Laughlin, is a hardy Donegal man who has endless tales of rural life in the olden days. It was her Dad who restored her cottage, and no doubt his own creative energy has helped shape this perfect setting. Her Dad has helped weave the web, where the threads of her life, her stories and her art are eternally enmeshed.
As Biddy says: “Life is synonymous with stories.” She’ll invite you into her character-filled cottage with a warm welcome, as if you’re an old friend. Then Biddy will transport you to another era, with her magical storytelling as you sit around her fire, as she gently rocks on her rocking chair. Her manner is compassionate and infectious. Apart from her storytelling being a wonderfully authentic way to immerse yourself in Irish culture, you’ll see her naive Irish paintings. Both her storytelling and her art are the soul of life, happiness and healing.
Biddy will serve you homemade oatcakes and tea, in her authentic cottage which is a heavenly spot – a den of good energy and creativity. She feels that she got through breast cancer with good energy. Although she doesn’t remember, apparently she even had everyone laughing in the chemotherapy ward with her storytelling.
I would highly recommend going to Biddy’s Cottage as early on in your trip as possible. It will definitely give you a real flavour of Irish culture, not from a plastic touristic perspective, but filled with Irish heart and soul. When you arrive to Biddy’s Cottage, you’ll enter her door as a tourist, but when you leave, you’ll feel like you’re leaving a friend.
Brighid “Biddy” McLaughlin is an ex-journalist for one of Ireland’s top newspapers. She is a wonderful storyteller, writer, chef, painter and sculptor. But above all Biddy is an inspirational Irish woman. As she said on a radio interview: “The threads of life can be snapped into happiness eventually, not immediately …”
Bella A Go Go
Enter Dublin’s Queen of Burlesque, Miss Bella A Go Go. Don’t think sleazy, think sultry, beautiful and sexy, with a large dose of wacky and quirky thrown in. Miss Bella, who is also a belly dancer and cabaret legend, has been thrilling audiences for many years now. She’s worked with rock bands, both in Ireland and abroad, with big cabaret shows, and produces her own unique, highly entertaining cabaret shows.
Bella’s hugely successful show – the Mexican Day of the Dead cabaret show – includes her skeleton ballet and celebrates those who have died in a wonderful, positive, fun way. Don’t let the macabre title put you off!
If you can make it to Dublin for the Halloween weekend 2014, you can see her performing in The Liquor Rooms, along with other madcap artists, on the 31st of October. Then the next day, 1st November, you can find Miss Bella at the Rocky Horror Picture Show Halloween Extravaganza, at The Sugar Club. Below is Miss Bella’s Facebook link, and the websites for the two different clubs. Keep an eye out on her page to see when you can see her performing in Dublin.
Of course a trip to Ireland wouldn’t be complete without learning about our fabulous leprechauns! Take the word museum out of the title of this venue, because in reality it’s more of a storytelling experience about leprechauns and other Irish magical myths.. Of course there’s a museum element to it, but not in the traditional sense.
National Leprachaun Museum, Dublin
There are a number of rooms, each with their own story. The guides are really entertaining, and the daytime tour is fun for both children and adults. Let your inner child out to enjoy the leprechauns, fairies and myths. If you’re someone who likes to take life very seriously, it’s probably not the place for you.
On Friday and Saturday nights, there’s an adults only interactive show, with a darker side to it. Be warned, when you get there a member of the cast will dress you up in a costume – this is part of the interactive experience. Then it’s off to the town of Cnoc Dubh (Knock Duff) to help the town’s residents find out why their crops are failing and people are disappearing….What, or who, is responsible?
Vintage Cocktail Club, Temple Bar
The Vintage Cocktail Club in Temple Bar is possibly one of the best places in the world for its classy atmosphere and old cocktails. The cocktails are phenomenal, the speakeasy vibe atmosphere fantastic, and you feel like you’ve just stepped back in time. It’s best to make a reservation, as this exclusive set up has designated sitting times. Part of its charm is the fact that you need to ring the bell to get in, on the door that simply has VCC on it. This is the place to go if you want to enjoy fantastic food and cocktails, in an atmosphere reminiscent of the Roaring Twenties.
Temple Bar Dublin at night
Go to a GAA match or Experience Gaelic Games
If you’re a sports fan, check out the GAA website for fixtures that coincide with your trip to Dublin. Both Gaelic football and hurling are unique, exciting games to watch. However if you fancy getting a little bit more hands-on, then go along to Experience Gaelic Games. This is a fun way to experience and learn about the pride, the sports and their history.
GAA Gaelic Games Offaly and Westmeath play in the Leinster football championship, Croke Park, Dublin
Even if you’re a seasoned traveller, this is an experience that should outshine many that you’ve had before. A wonderful way to have plenty of Irish craic, Experience Gaelic Games is really popular with hen and stag parties, as well as other types of groups, corporate included.
On their website, you can see how the astronaut, Commander Chris Hadfield, got on with his hurling experience.
Gay Bingo at The George
You don’t have to be gay to enjoy Gay Bingo at The George. Running since 1997, on Sunday night, the hostess with the mostess, Shirley Temple Bar, will give you an unforgettable experience. Vanity Fair said: “You haven’t played bingo unless you’ve played with Shirley Temple Bar.” The Irish newspaper, the Sunday Independent, describes the night as: “An amalgam of pub panto, drag show and beginner’s gambling!”
Gay Bingo at The George is unlike anything else you’ll experience in Dublin, or anywhere else in the world. It’s lots of fun, with great drag acts and plenty of good prizes to be won. If you do decide to go along, don’t expect a new club with new decor – this is not the case. The George, and its Sunday night bingo with Shirley Temple Bar, is somewhat of an institution in Dublin.
Science Gallery, Trinity
“It may have ‘science’ in the title, but each exhibition at the gallery proves it to be the most creative, innovative and artistic venue in Ireland.” – Shane Hegarty, Irish Times, April 2011
Located in the beautiful Trinity College Dublin, is the fantastic concept of the Science Gallery, where art and science collide. Don’t expect a huge venue, or anything similar to something you’ve visited before. This is a world first, where exhibitions change regularly, and you’re encouraged to have your say.
From vampire content, to examining burst bubbles, and from questioning which pills we take to debating about the science and future of desire and love – the Science Gallery is not to be missed. Each show is amazing, and the gallery is run by super creative, dedicated people who source quirky, enlivening exhibitions.
With the help of a partnership with Google Ireland, the Science Gallery is now an International success story, which has been cloned in other cities around the world. In September 2014 its partnership with Google Ireland won the award of best large sponsorship, at the Allianz Business to Arts Awards.
Set up in 2008, admission to the exhibitions is free, and some of the events also have free admission. Before visiting do check their website, as opening hours change depending on the exhibition.
Have you had a quirky fun experience in Dublin? Let me know in the comments, I would love to hear about it.

Travelore Tips: Some Of The Craziest Places In The World Where You Can Get A Drink

Contributed by

If you've grown tired of all the establishments within a five-mile radius of your house, know that the world is bursting with weird, creepy, and mind-blowing spots for you to enjoy a spot of tea -- or delicious libations.

You can have a drink...

With geeks of every stripe.

Appealing to the slovenly bum in all of us, hammock cafes let you relax with a hot drink or a cold beer without having to actually sit up straight like your mother taught you. (Just don't get too excited about getting in.) Unfortunately, time limits are enforced, but happily so is the "no children" rule, in some of the cafes.

With nocturnal birds of prey.
Where: Tokyo, Japan
Head to one of Japan's owl cafes to enjoy a nice hot owl-themed beverage while youmake friends with some of the birds. Some of the cafes even let you hold one, but others have more stringent rules.

Everything at Minus 5 is made of ice, from the walls to the seats to the very glass you'll drink from, although supposedly the name is misleading -- it's a balmy 23 degrees inside! Your cover charge provides you a parka and pair of gloves to use for the duration of your stay.

Scientists at the Vernadsky Research Station get thirsty, too, you know. The world's southernmost bar exists in the Argentine Islands, part of the continent of Antarctica, featuring homemade vodka and Ukrainian knickknacks. Drinks can be purchased for a few dollars or a women's undergarment.

Where: Minneapolis, Minn.
When the zombie apocalypse comes, Donny Dirk's Zombie Den will already exist as a hideaway from the walking dead, where the Minnesota winters are cold enough "to sustain, with minimal odor, re-animated ambulatory flesh." So you can drink somewhere it doesn't smell like a thousand rotting corpses. Huzzah!
