DETROIT (AP) — Hertz announced Monday that it will buy 100,000 electric vehicles from Tesla, one of the largest purchases of battery-powered cars in history and the latest evidence of the nation’s increasing commitment to EV technology.
The purchase by one of the world’s leading rental car companies reflects its confidence that electric vehicles are gaining acceptance with environmentally minded consumers as an alternative to vehicles powered by petroleum-burning internal combustion engines.
In an interview with The Associated Press, Mark Fields, Hertz’ interim CEO, said that Teslas are already arriving at the company’s sites and should be available for rental starting in November.
Hertz said in its announcement that it will complete its purchases of the Tesla Model 3 small cars by the end of 2022. It also said it will establish its own electric vehicle charging network as it strives to produce the largest rental fleet of electric vehicles in North America.
Fields wouldn’t say how much Hertz is spending for the order. But he said the company has sufficient capital and a healthy balance sheet after having emerged from bankruptcy protection in June.
The deal likely is worth around $4 billion because each Model 3 has a base price of about $40,000. It also ranks at the top of the list of electric vehicle orders by a single company. In 2019, Amazon ordered 100,000 electric delivery vans from Rivian, a startup manufacturer of electric van, pickup trucks and SUVs. Amazon is an investor in Rivian.
Shares of Tesla hit an intraday record Monday before pulling back slightly. They were up 7% to $973.85 by mid-morning. The share price increase boosted the market value of Tesla, the world’s most valuable automaker, to just over $900 billion.
I
n his interview with the AP, Fields made clear his belief that electric vehicles are increasingly moving into the mainstream and that Hertz intends to be a leading provider of EVs to rental customers. He pointed to surveys showing that over the past five years, consumer interest in electric vehicles has grown dramatically.
“More are willing to try and buy,” he said. “It’s pretty stunning.”
Fields said that Hertz, which is based in Estero, Florida, is in discussions with other automakers, too, about buying additional electric vehicles as it expands its EV fleet as more models enter the marketplace.
Hertz also is investing in its own charging network. Fields said it has plans for 3,000 chargers in 65 locations across the United States by the end of 2022 and 4,000 by the end of 2023. Many of the sites will be at Hertz locations such as airports, he said, while others will be in suburban areas.
Customers also would be able to use Tesla’s own large charging network for a fee, Fields said. The company has a network of about 25,000 chargers worldwide.
Fields declined to say how much Hertz will charge to rent the Teslas or whether they would be more expensive for customers than gas-powered vehicles.
Daniel Ives, a technology analyst at Wedbush Securities, wrote in a note Monday to investors that Hertz’s order represents a “major feather in the cap” for Tesla and shows that a broad adoption of electric vehicles is under way “as part of this oncoming green tidal wave hitting the U.S.”
China and Europe have been ahead of the U.S. on vehicle electrification. But demand in the United States is accelerating, Ives noted, with Tesla leading the way, followed by startup Lucid Motors, General Motors, Ford and others that are chasing a potential $5 trillion market opportunity over the next decade.
Hertz Global Holdings Inc. filed for bankruptcy protection in May 2020, two months after the coronavirus erupted across the country. It was among the first major corporations to be felled by the pandemic as infections surged and shut down travel on a global scale for both companies and vacationers.
In October, Hertz named Fields, a former Ford Motor Co. CEO, as its interim chief executive.

National, Enterprise, And Alamo Earn Top Customer Experience Ratings For Rental Car Agencies, According To Temkin Group
Sixth Annual Temkin Experience Ratings Evaluates 294 Companies Across 20 Industries
National Rent A Car, Enterprise Rent-A-Car, and Alamo Rent A Car deliver the best customer
experience in the rental car industry, according to the 2016 Temkin Experience Ratings, an annual
ranking of companies based on a survey of 10,000 U.S. consumers.
National and Enterprise tied for the top spot out of 11 rental car agencies in this year's ratings,
coming in 142nd overall out of 294 companies across 20 industries. Alamo came in second with
an overall rank of 166th. These three agencies also earned the highest scores in 2015; although,
Alamo fell from first place to second place after its score dropped a dramatic nine percentage points.
In fact, of the 11 rental car agencies included in this study, Fox Rent A Car was the only one to
improve its score in the past year.
"Congratulations to National, Enterprise, and Alamo for continuing to set the bar for customer
experience in the rental car industry," states Bruce Temkin, managing partner of Temkin Group.
At the other end of the spectrum, Dollar received the lowest score in the industry with a rating
of 36%, which put it in 292nd place overall. Dollar is no stranger to the bottom of the list as it
has spent four of the past five years there. In addition, three other rental car agencies received
"very poor" scores (below 50%) this year: Thrifty, Advantage Rent-A-Car, and Fox Rent a Car.
Overall, the rental car industry averaged a 52% rating in the 2016 Temkin Experience Ratings and
placed 17th out of 20 industries. The average rating of the industry decreased by eight percentage
points between 2015 and 2016, dropping from 60% to 52%.
The ratings of all rental car agencies in the 2016 Temkin Experience Ratings are as follows:
- National Rent a Car (61%)
- Enterprise Rent-A-Car (61%)
- Alamo Rent A Car (59%)
- Hertz (53%)
- Avis (51%)
- ACE Rent A Car (50%)
- Budget (50%)
- Fox Rent A Car (49%)
- Advantage Rent-A-Car (49%)
- Thrifty (45%)
- Dollar (36%)
To generate these ratings, Temkin Group asked 10,000 U.S. consumers to evaluate their recent
experiences with a company across three dimensions: success (can you do what you want to do?),
effort (how easy is it to work with the company?), and emotion (how do you feel about the interactions?).
Temkin Group then averaged these three scores to produce each company's Temkin Experience Rating.
In these ratings, a score of 70% or above is considered "good," and a score of 80% or above is
considered "excellent." In this year'sTemkin Experience Ratings, 20% of companies earned a
"good" or "excellent" score, while 44% received a "poor" or "very poor" score.
The 2016 Temkin Experience Ratings, along with other ratings, can be accessed at the Temkin
Ratings website,www.TemkinRatings.com.

Now You Can Rent A Lamborghini Gallardo From Hertz
Contributed by Alex Davies.
Rental cars no longer need to be boring. For travelers who want to drive in style, Hertz is now offering a fleet of supercars through its Hertz Dream Cars program.
The fleet includes rides from Aston Martin, Audi, Bentley, Lamborghini, Tesla, and more, at 35 locations around the U.S.
Naturally, a top of the line rental costs more than a few days in an old Chevy Impala. Hertz's Ferraris, Lamborghinis, and Bentleys start at $1,500 per day, and cost $3 for every mile above the 75 mile limit.
The Aston Martin Vantage and Audi R8 both start at $1,000 per day, with the same $3/mile penalty. The cheaper end of the luxury lineup, including Porsche and Mercedes rides, will cost you $350 per diem, with a $.49 penalty for roll of the odometer over the 75 mile limit.
Here's the full list of available whips. Hertz does not disclose how many it has of each:
- Aston Martin V8 Vantage
- Audi R8
- Bentley Continental GT
- Cadillac CTS-V
- Ferrari (California, F430)
- Lamborghini Gallardo
- Land Rover Range Rover Sport
- Mercedes-Benz AMG (SLS, C63, E63)
- Mercedes-Benz SL550, S550 and G550
- Porsche (911, Cayenne, Boxster, Panamera)
- SRT Viper
