American Airlines is officially making a grand return to Asia from the Midwest. Following a teaser campaign on social media that had aviation enthusiasts buzzing, CEO Robert Isom hosted a team rally at O’Hare International Airport to deliver the big news: American is launching nonstop service between Chicago (ORD) and Tokyo Narita (NRT).
Scheduled to take flight on March 27, 2027, the daily, year-round service marks the end of a long hiatus. American last operated this route in January 2020, and its cutting represented the total exit of American's own metal flying between the Windy City and Asia. Now, the battle for transpacific dominance in Chicago is heating up once again.
The Fleet and the On-Board Experience
American will deploy one of its standard, long-haul workhorses on the 6,272-mile route: the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner. The aircraft features a total of 305 seats configured in a three-cabin layout:
- 30 Flagship® Business Class Seats: Featuring lie-flat privacy, though these will be American's older generation seats rather than the brand-new premium-heavy Flagship Suites.
- 21 Premium Economy Seats: Offering extra legroom and upgraded dining options for transpacific comfort.
- 254 Economy Seats: Equipped with standard seatback entertainment and on-board Wi-Fi capability.
Leveraging the Power of Japan Airlines
While some industry analysts view the route as a safe play—given that Chicago to Tokyo is already heavily served—the true value for travelers lies in American's robust Pacific Joint Business agreement with Japan Airlines (JAL).
JAL already operates daily flights from Chicago to both Tokyo Narita and Tokyo Haneda. By adding its own metal into the mix, American is expanding scheduling options while perfectly timing its arrivals at NRT to offer seamless, one-stop connections to major hotspots across Southeast Asia, including:
- Bangkok, Thailand (BKK)
- Singapore (SIN)
- Taipei, Taiwan (TPE)
- Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam (SGN)
Loyalty Perks: Because of the deep Oneworld alliance partnership, AAdvantage® members can seamlessly choose between booking American or JAL flights, earning miles and Loyalty Points all the same, while elite status holders retain full lounge access privileges on both sides of the Pacific.
A Broader Chicago Expansion
The return to Tokyo is the headline act of what American is calling a major reinforcement of its Chicago hub, bringing the airport's long-haul total to 11 routes. Alongside the Tokyo service, American announced two strategic domestic route additions originating from ORD later this year:
- Charlottesville, Virginia (CHO): Launching twice-daily regional service in November.
- Ontario, California (ONT): Launching daily mainline service in December, giving Southern California travelers an alternative gateway to the Midwest without battling LAX traffic.
Between United Airlines expanding its own footprint to Japan and American stepping back into the transpacific ring, Chicago travelers are walking away as the ultimate winners next spring.
