One-way charters may have a special cancellation clause because of their price advantage and their need to arrive at the other end.
 

The aircraft may have a charter booked after the current one-way, which is dependent on it being in that vicinity.
 

Generally speaking floating fleet aircraft have a standard cancellation policy and true empty leg charters are non-cancelable upon booking.

App Dubbed ‘Uber For Private Jets’ Launches On Europe’s Most Popular Routes

Dubbed the ‘Uber for private jets’, a new app service has been launched in Europe which gives customers the opportunity to book empty seats on some of the continent’s most popular routes.

These include flights between London, Paris and Geneva where a tap of a smartphone can get you on board. JetSmarter, which launched in the US three years ago, is also lining up routes to Nice in May and then has Moscow in its sights for later in the year. The Daily Telegraph reports that a seat on a six-seat Citation CJ3 departing from London to Paris could be booked this week for US$749 (£525), while a ticket to ride in luxury between Britain and Geneva costs US$999 (£703).

In the US, it would cost $599 for a last-minute ticket on similar jet between LA and San Francisco. The price jumps to $1,599 for a ticket a 16-seater going from New York to Chicago. Travellers using a 12-person flight from San Francisco to New York would have to fork out almost $5,000. The JetSmarter app allows customers to book on a pay-as-you-go basis. It also offers an annual membership with unlimited travel for $9,000.

The founder and chief executive of JetSmarter, Sergey Petrossov, says that by offering the JetShuttle service, they plan to make the best use in Europe of the convenience of private air travel and increase access to it. These weekly scheduled flights into popular destinations are convenient and affordable and mean the hustle and bustle of commercial flights could now be considered a thing of the past.

The app also offers a charter service which allows the booking of an entire flight on unused private planes in JetSmarter’s network. This, however, would be substantially more costly than just booking a spare seat on a flight already scheduled. He expects the JetShuttle service will be operating in 150 cities within two years. Mr Petrossov predicted that the JetShuttle service would be operating in 150 cities by 2018.

Five Myths About Private Jets (Hint: They're Not Just For Movie Stars)

If you’ve ever spotted a private jet in flight or on the tarmac, you’ve probably wondered which celebrity it belonged to. The fact is that many jets are chartered, not privately owned by a fat cat or pop star, and they’re mostly used for business, not lavish vacations. It’s a world shrouded in mystery, so here are five myths about private jets.

1. You need to be as rich as Donald Trump to fly in a private jet.

“Yes, it helps if you want to own a Boeing 757 in executive configuration like his, but that is not a reality for 99.9% of the population,” says Mark H. Lefever, president and chief operating officer of Avjet, a broker and adviser.

The answer is “no” if you want to charter.

A round-trip flight in a private jet can cost as little at $6,000, says Kevin O’Leary, president of Jet Advisors, which offers advice on private aviation options. “The typical charter costs for a light jet are $3,000 per hour with a two-hour per day minimum,” O’Leary says.  “This would allow a passenger to fly from New York to Washington, D.C., and back in the same day for about $6,000. A round-trip flight between New York City and Naples, Fla., would likely cost around $30,000.  So if you fill the seven seats typically found in a light jet, that is $4,300 per person. These prices are still higher than the first-class airline tickets but you don’t need to be ‘the Donald’ to afford them.”

Before you reach for your credit card, there are even cheaper deals to be found according to Doug Gollan, editor-in-chief of  DG Amazing Experiences, a newsletter for private jet owners and passengers. Gollan points to JetSuite Suite Deals, which are posted daily and start at around $500.

“Last week for $536 you could have flown the next day from Tyler, Texas, to Dallas,” he says “They post the specials for the next day on their Facebook page.” The company recently began offering private jet flights to Cuba, with one-way prices for up to six passengers for $11,152 from Key West (JetSuite says that it’s the responsibility of each passenger to secure their own permission to travel to Cuba, which is allowed by the U.S. government only under specific approved categories).

“You can also reach out to the multitude of charter brokers who don’t typically own planes but source aircraft that are available for charter, and then get five friends and divide the costs,” Gollan says. “Under these circumstances you might be able to do a Los Angeles to Aspen trip for around $2,500 a head. “

Still interested in owning your own jet? O’Leary says that “the purchase cost can be a little as $500,000 with annual operating costs at an additional $500,000 or more.  The major concern is with unexpected repairs. A major engine repair or scheduled overhaul on just one engine could easily cost $300,000."

2. If bad weather forces commercial flights to delay or cancel, then private jets have to do so as well. 

Lefever says that this isn’t true. Private jets have the ability to land at many more airports than commercial aircraft and to change flight plans very quickly.

“Private jets have the option of waiting it out or choosing an alternate airport,” he says. “The best example is LAX-SFO, a common flight that has delays due to weather in the Bay Area.”

A private jet, he says, “can file a new flight plan and go to Oakland, which isn’t much farther to downtown San Francisco than the SFO airport,” with minimal delays.

3. Private jets are not as safe as airlines.

“There are various ways to compare the stats, but more passenger fatalities have occurred on scheduled commercial flights than on both charter and private jets” in the last 15 years, says Lefever.

Comparisons of accident rates per hour operated show less of a discrepancy, but the reality is that both are extremely safe and safety is always the No. 1  concern for both, adds Lefever.

Gollan says that “I used to fly regularly on NetJets and my pilots were former 747-400 captains for United Airlines and chief pilots for Fortune 500 companies. Most of the major fleet operators that own and operate their aircraft have spotless records.  Most of the fleet on the charter market is used by the owner and chartered when he or she is not using it, so obviously owners want maintenance and pilots at a high standard.”

4. You might be flying private, but you still have to go through security and deal with the TSA. 

No, you can forget about security lines, taking off your shoes and emptying your pockets. You won’t find metal detectors or body scanners. O’Leary says that often “there is no TSA or pre-flight checks required. The pilots may check the ID of the lead passenger, otherwise you will be loaded and on your way within minutes of arrival at the airport.  At some private airports, you can actually pull your car up to the aircraft, unload and have valet (service for) your car so you could be in the air within minutes.”

5. Commercial airlines fly faster than private jets.

That silver blip sailing by your window on a transcontinental flight? Chances are it’s a private jet.

“The fastest passenger jets in the sky are private, depending on the model of jet flown, “says Lefever. “Private jets also fly above the commercial airlines and a lot of times the weather and turbulence that they incur.“

Some private jets have the ability to fly above the weather up to 51,000 feet and “a couple private jets fly near the speed of sound,” O’Leary says. “The flexibility to fly in and out of smaller airports that are often closer to the departure point and the destination airport makes the actual speed secondary to the private jet’s access to nearly 10 times as many airports in the United States. That makes the door-to-door speed significantly faster when traveling privately.”

Abercrombie & Kent Scores Hit With Boutique Private Jet Tours

As air travel becomes more crowded, more commodified and hobbled by security concerns, the appeal of private jet travel increases, at least for those who can afford it. With the popularity of private jet travel on the rise, Abercrombie & Kent is branching out into a new tier of private air travel with a new series of scaled down private air trips it calls Wings Over the World.

The Wings Over the World programs use smaller, chartered aircraft, not necessarily jets, and explore more concentrated geographical areas than A&K’s traditional private jet tours. They have dedicated crews throughout the itinerary and a maximum of 16 passengers.

The series is debuting with three programs: Wings Over Indochina, Wings Over India and Wings Over China. They are priced between $27,995 and $29,995. The first departs next October, the second in December and the third in April 2017.

A&K has done extraordinarily well with its private jet offerings since its first offering of the Royal Air Tour in 1989, which circled the world in a private jet. The private jet programs have succeeded to a degree that surprises travel agents who often don’t imagine that their clients could or would spring for a package with such an extravagant price. Private jet trips hover in price around the $100,000 zone. And they do sell.

Last year the company expanded on the private jet concept with a new series of private jet trips conceived and led by A&K’s founder and chairman, Geoffrey Kent, called Inspiring Expeditions. The basic idea of the series is “to take intimate groups of intrepid travelers for adventures in the most unexplored areas in the world, remote places only accessible by private jet, led by the best professional explorers.”

A&K’s private jet journeys in the past have usually used a chartered 757 jet reconfigured to carry only 50 passengers in business class seating.

Private jets offer the advantage of being able to cover great expanses easier than ever before. One popular form of private jet trip is the around-the-world by private jet tour. There are endless possible ways to structure an around-the-world itinerary based on some unifying theme.

But what the private jet trips all have in common is a way to cover great distances easily and in comfort, with minimal airport hassle and delay. And private jets offer the possibility of traveling to places that cannot be visited by regular scheduled flights.

The possibility of flying to remote areas that are unaccessible by scheduled flights also plays into the rising demand for authentic experiences.

“It’s fascinating how much attraction people have to traditional cultures, like Japan and Bhutan, places that are so much not affected by the western world,” said Pamela Lassers, A&K’s director of media relations. “It’s something people are really seeking. These are some of our strongest places. Part of the appeal of private jet trips is to link together several of those places all in one trip.”

Besides the around-the-world tours, there are many other kinds of itineraries that tie various destinations together based on some unifying theme.

A&K’s “Africa Revealed: A Journey by Private Jet” is priced at $92,500 per person. “Cuba and South America by Private Jet” is $99,500 per person. “Around the World by Private Jet: Islands, Savannas & the Amazon” is $117,000. “Around the World by Private Jet: The Tropics to the Arctic” is priced at $135,000.

Lassers says that the private air trips are attractive to entrepreneurs who have not had time to travel while they were spending decades building up a business. When they finally reach a point in their business lives that allows them to travel, they have a lot to make up for. They want to see a lot in the time they have, and the private jets are good for that. They maximize the amount of ground you can cover in a short time, without sacrificing comfort.

As air travel has become more accessible to broader markets, it has also become less comfortable, and the result is a new tier of air travel for those who want a more exclusive, luxurious flying experience. The addition of lie-flat seats to the product offering a couple of years ago was the crowning touch to the private jet experience.

Travelers can now circle the globe with their own flying sleeping quarters, in luxury Winnebagos of the sky. The Wings Over the World programs scale down the private jet experience to a boutique style of travel.

The first slated departures have already sold out and A&K is planning to add more.
