Southwest Airlines is gearing up for a record-breaking travel season, officially opening its summer 2027 schedule with a massive expansion. Covering 15 cities and introducing 11 completely new routes, this marks the carrier’s largest summer operation to date. Operating from June 3 through August 2, 2027, the new schedule strategically bolsters Southwest’s presence in three key growth markets: Austin, Nashville, and San Diego.
For travelers planning their next summer getaway, the expansion means greater access to leisure destinations, including highly anticipated international routes to the Caribbean and Central America.
Austin Gets A Major International Boost
Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS) emerges as the biggest winner in this expansion. Southwest will push its operations to a staggering 143 daily departures on peak days. The airline is introducing seven new or returning seasonal routes from the Texas capital, three of which are international weekend services: Liberia, Costa Rica; Nassau, Bahamas; and Punta Cana, Dominican Republic.
On the domestic front, Austin travelers will see the return of daily flights to Portland, Oregon, alongside weekend service to Sarasota, Florida; Savannah, Georgia; and Bozeman, Montana. This growth aligns perfectly with Southwest's long-term commitment to Austin, which includes positioning itself as the anchor tenant for the planned Concourse B and opening its first-ever passenger lounge at the airport in late 2027.
Nashville’s New Island Connections
Music City is also seeing unprecedented growth, with Nashville International Airport (BNA) scheduled for up to 220 trips a day—the most Southwest has ever operated from the city. Nashville’s expansion features a strong push toward island destinations, including new direct flights to Nassau, Bahamas, and Providenciales, Turks and Caicos. Additionally, Southwest is adding a new route to Boise, Idaho, and bringing back seasonal flights to Bozeman, Montana, and Portland, Oregon.
Similar to Austin, Nashville is one of the exclusive locations where Southwest is currently constructing a brand-new airport lounge, signaling a clear strategy to attract premium leisure and business travelers in these booming hubs.
San Diego and Beyond
On the West Coast, San Diego International Airport (SAN) will benefit from seasonal additions on five routes. The highlight is a new Sunday service connecting San Diego to Oklahoma City. Furthermore, Southwest is bringing back seasonal flights linking San Diego with Bozeman, Montana; Columbus, Ohio; Milwaukee; and Pittsburgh.
With 4,498 trips scheduled on peak days for summer 2027, Southwest is making a bold statement. The airline is not only maximizing its domestic network but also leveraging its growing international footprint to capture peak summer vacation demand. Travelers looking to secure seats on these new routes can book now directly through Southwest.
