San Miguel De Allende Maintains Its ‘Health First’ Approach To Covid-19, 100% Hotel Occupancy During Holidays

SAN MIGUEL DE ALLENDE, Mexico — The Mexican colonial city of San Miguel de Allende had a highly successful holiday season, reporting 100% occupancy of the current 50% of existing hotel rooms available for booking. With more than 200,000 inhabitants, the city has recorded 1,800 total cases of Covid-19, one of the lowest number of cases in the country, with its government officials sticking to a “Health First” stance.

Access to San Miguel de Allende was closed from March to June 2020 to non-residents, sacrificing the local economy for the health and wellness of its residents. On May 25, the city launched its “Health First” certification, which is granted after local health and safety officials evaluate each location and certify compliance with sanitary protocols for reopening.

This was followed on July 2 with San Miguel de Allende receiving the World Travel and Tourism Council’s “Safe Travels” stamp. This was seen as an acknowledgement of the many sacrifices the city has made to contain the pandemic and ensure that all international requirements are met. Today, 245 hotels, 336 restaurants, seven spas and 20 tourist guides have been certified, reactivating the city’s tourism industry slowly and safely.

In August, restaurants, hotels and all establishments that operate a reservation system were required to complete an additional process to generate a QR code (square two-dimensional barcode) with which patrons were able to enter the city and thereby maintain a 50% occupancy in all establishments. Staff at every entry point to the city oversaw reading the codes and completion of a second questionnaire on the current health status of possible visitors before they were allowed into San Miguel de Allende.

Within city limits, disinfectant stations have placed along the streets and mask-wearing is mandatory. Those not complying are arrested. All city events in San Miguel de Allende have been suspended, including celebrations of the Day of the Dead, the Virgin of Guadalupe, Christmas and the New Year. Currently alcoholic beverages may only be sold within the hours of 8:00 p.m. to 10:30 p.m., and bars and restaurants are limited to 50% capacity. Hotels, too, continue to operate at 50% of potential capacity.

The city of San Miguel is also working with local medical facilities to be able to provide easy access to Covid-19 testing with hotels offering their own opportunities for guest. The following are the locations currently offering rapid testing.

SAN MIGUEL DE ALLENDE, Mexico —   San Miguel de Allende, located in the Mexican state of Guanajuato, returned to the annual Condé Nast Traveler Readers’ Choice Awards announced this morning. San Miguel de Allende came in at the top of the “Small Cities in the World” list as one of only two Mexican cities to make the list, the other being Mérida, Yucatán. San Miguel de Allende is also home to four of the top 15 “Best Hotels in Mexico” as ranked by readers: Rosewood San Miguel de Allende (No. 1), Hotel Matilda (No. 2), Hotel Casa Rosada (No. 5) and Dos Casas Hotel & Spa (No. 13).

The UNESCO World Heritage city started its reopening process on July 15  after a four-month closing of its entrances to non-residents. With more than 200,000 inhabitants, San Miguel de Allende has reported one of Mexico’s lowest numbers of cases of Covid-19, a result of strict health policies and its local “Heath First” certification, which was launched on May 25, and reinforced by certification with the WTTC “Safe Travels” stamp on July 2. 

With local hotels already able to book up to 50 percent of available rooms and 37 non-stop flights per week arriving from the U.S. to Guanajuato’s international airport (BJX), which serves San Miguel de Allende, the city is now looking to regain its footing in the business and romance travel markets.

San Miguel de Allende first appeared on the CNTRCA in 2013. Most recently, it was recognized as the “Best Small City in the World” in 2017 and 2018. This year, more than 715,000 Condé Nast Traveler readers submitted an incredible number of responses rating their travel experiences across the globe.

San Miguel de Allende, located in the state of Guanajuato, ranks in Travel + Leisure magazine’s 2020 World’s Best Awards as the second Best City in the World, this is the fourth year in a row that the city has placed in the list. The city also placed in the second spot in the Best City in Mexico for the fifth year as announced by the publication this morning. The annual awards honor the top travel destinations and companies around the globe, as rated by readers. In addition, three local accommodations properties find their place in the Top 5 City Hotels in Mexico — Hotel Amparo (1), Hotel Matilda (3),  Rosewood San Miguel de Allende (4)— were named top hotels in Mexico, with the latter also ranking in the top hotels worldwide list. Hotel Amparo also comes in at the second spot in the Top Hotels in the World list.

‘Heart of Mexico’ reaffirms commitment to remaining a healthy, sanitized destination amid new normal

SAN MIGUEL DE ALLENDE, Mexico — San Miguel de Allende, a city known as the “Heart of Mexico” and located in the State of Guanajuato, was endorsed with the World Travel & Tourism Council's (WTTC) "Safe Travels" stamp of approval recognizing the implementation of global standardized health and hygiene protocols in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic. The State of Guanajuato, as a whole, was given the stamp as announced yesterday by the organization’s CEO, Gloria Guevara, in a Tweet yesterday.

The international stamp augments San Miguel de Allende’s own municipal “Health First” certification. The city launched “Health First,” which is granted after local health and safety officials evaluate each location and certify compliance with sanitary protocols for reopening, on May 25. Restaurants, hotels, golf courses, activity centers and cultural spaces, among others, must apply for the certificate online at www.sanmigueldeallende.gob.mx. In addition to the onsite inspection, businesses must complete paperwork providing detailed information on sanitation practices and undergo staff training sessions. Certification is "free but mandatory," according to San Miguel de Allende Mayor Luis Alberto Villarreal García.  

“San Miguel de Allende’s infrastructure has been working proactively to ensure the wellness of our residents and future visitors and making many sacrifices to contain this pandemic and working with health officials to ensure that all international requirements are met,” said Mayor Villarreal García. “Obtaining the WTTC’s ‘Safe Travels’ stamp endorses this work and reaffirms that San Miguel de Allende is properly ready in terms of sanitation.”

San Miguel de Allende entered its Phase 0 of its Covid-19 Reactivation plan — activation of the local economy for the residents — starting June 1. During the initial phase of the plan, the city saw most of the business infrastructure that affects residents reopen, including restaurants, markets, public transportation, offices and more. At this point, hotels, bars, cantinas, clubs, public or hotel pools will not yet reopen. All residents are asked to wear masks, practice social distancing and apply extensive hygiene practices. Businesses will be required to implement international-grade sanitation protocols, including shoe-cleaning, a decrease in interior foot traffic, set-up of dispensers of antibacterial sanitizer containing 70% alcohol, provision of face masks for people without them and hourly disinfecting of public spaces.  At no point can any groups gather inside or outside public spaces.

Access to San Miguel de Allende has been closed since March to non-residents, with city police monitoring all entry points (Querétaro, Celaya-Comonfort, Guanajuato, Dolores Hidalgo and Dr. Mora). Those permitted to enter must not show symptoms of Covid-19 and must be essential to the needs of the recovery phase the city is currently in.

Mayor Villarreal García announced that hotels may start accepting bookings for July 15 arrivals as of this week, in the hope that the city may start reopening in the upcoming month.
“We take our place in the world seriously, as you do when you are with us,” said Mayor Luis Alberto Villarreal García. “With these efforts we confirm San Miguel de Allende as a leading destination.

San Miguel De Allende To Celebrate Day Of The Dead With La Calaca Festival From October 31st through November 4th.

UNESCO Site Hosts Numerous International Festivals as One of Mexico’s Most Cultural Destinations   The city of San Miguel de Allende, known as the Heart of Mexico, will hold the third annual La Calaca festival along with the Day of the Dead celebration, a popular tradition steaming back to the colonial era, combining pre-Hispanic with European festivities surrounding the revisiting of those loved ones who have passed. This UNESCO recognized festivity as an Intangible Heritage is transformed in La Calaca Festival  through the eyes of innovative artistic expressions by national and international artists. The four day event, starts on October 31st (the same day that Halloween is celebrated in the US) and continues through November 1st (All Saints Day), November 2nd, which is the Day of the Dead for Catholics, and ending on November 3rd. (Calaca is a colloquial Mexican Spanish name for skeleton or skull). In the daytime, participants are immersed in cultural activities such as tours of traditional altars and cemeteries, live art installations and creative workshops. At night, the city comes alive with costumed processions, musical performances, and parties that last till sunrise. Some artists that have participated in La Calaca are Spencer Tunick with the installation “Espiritus” (Spirits); the “Earth Harp” of Andrea Brooke and Onyay Pheori; Alejandro Rivera and Anado McLauchlin with “Las Calaveras” (the skulls);  Joshua Harcker with the “Geodesic Skull”; and Muros en Blanco (White Walls), a muralist and street-art collective creator of the Colonia Guadalupe Arts District. “La Calaca Festival is a perfect combination of traditional Mexico and the cosmopolitism that San Miguel de Allende evokes,” said Maria José Garrido, Director of Tourism and Economic Development of San Miguel de Allende. “During the four days of festivities, you can enjoy innovative performances, exhibitions and music inspired in an eclectic concept as the dead are, but in a festive way, and at the same time enjoy outstanding accommodations and gourmet food “.
