Germany has issued a travel advisory to its citizens travelling to the United States, citing risks linked to immigration enforcement and public-order situations.

Germany’s Federal Foreign Office said on Tuesday that German citizens should be aware of demonstrations and clashes with American migration and security authorities.

The advisory is not a political statement about the U.S. but aims to give impartial information for German citizens travelling to the country at a time of increased tensions during President Donald Trump's aggressive deportation drive.

Protests have been held in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and other cities against the actions of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Border Patrol officers enforcing Trump’s immigration crackdown.

Federal agents deployed to the city under the Trump administration's "Operation Metro Surge" shot and killed U.S. citizen Alex Pretti in Minneapolis.on Saturday and fellow American Renée Good on Jnauary 7.

The statement said, according to a translation, that in Minneapolis and other cities, demonstrations sometimes lead to violent clashes with the migration and security authorities and warns people to be vigilant and stay away from crowds where violence might occur.

The advisory asks people to check out local media, stay away from crowds of people in which violence could possibly occur and note existing ID requirement in several states. "Keep calm and follow the instructions of the authorities and local security forces," added the statement.

Last March, Germany updated its travel advisory for the U.S. to emphasize that a visa or waiver allowing entry does not guarantee citizens to enter the U.S. after several of its citizens were detained at the border.

The U.S. has updated several travel advisories in recent months, including multiple "Do Not Travel" warnings for the summer. Some of the warnings have caused a stir, especially the new U.S. travel advisory for Canada amid the border and tariff tensions between the two countries. Even some of the safest countries in the world have been slapped with travel advisories. Now, a popular tourist destination in South Asia is under an updated Level 2 travel advisory, with added "Do Not Travel" warnings in some regions.

It's India, the largest democracy in the world, with a population of over 1.4 billion. The country has seen an upward trend in its tourism since 2023, when it saw 9.24 million foreign tourist arrivals—a whopping 43.5% increase from 2022. The number continued to soar in 2024 with the entry of 9.66 million international tourists. But India fears that its ramped-up Level 2 U.S. travel advisory may affect these numbers this year. Read on to learn about the current travel conditions in India, how to stay safe when visiting, and its biggest and "most confident" democracy.

On June 16, 2025, the U.S. Department of State updated its travel advisory for India, urging U.S. citizens to "Exercise Increased Caution" when visiting the South Asian country due to crime and terrorism. The warning highlighted that rape is one of the fastest-growing crimes in India. American travelers are reminded that sexual assault, violent crimes, and terrorist attacks typically occur in public places like tourist sites, transportation hubs, markets, shopping centers, and government facilities.

The State Department also raised "Do Not Travel" alerts for the following regions due to ongoing conflict:

Union territory of Jammu and Kashmir - terrorism and civil unrest

India-Pakistan Border - potential for armed conflict

Parts of Central and East India - terrorism

Manipur - threat of violence and crime

Northeastern States - terrorism and violence

The U.S. government strongly discourages its citizens from heading to these regions and other rural areas in India due to limited emergency services there. U.S. government employees working in India are also required to obtain special authorization to travel to these places if needed. These updates earned mixed reactions from the Indian government. Spokesperson for the Ministry of External Affairs, Randhir Jaiswal, reportedly called it "unfortunate."

Jasiwal said the warnings from the State Department don't accurately reflect the current situation in India. He also noted that the country has been at Level 2 U.S. travel advisory for "several years." Congress leader, Supriya Shrinate, questioned the "silence" of the Indian government as she claimed that the advisory "will not only harm India's image but also impact everybody’s life in the country," as Asia News reported. But online, many Indian citizens argue that these alerts shed light on real concerns.

NEW YORK (AP) — New York, Connecticut and New Jersey will require visitors from states with high infection rates to quarantine for 14 days, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said Wednesday.

“We now have to make sure the rates continue to drop,” Cuomo said. “We also have to make sure the virus doesn’t come on a plane again.”

Cuomo announced what was called a “travel advisory” at a briefing jointly via video feeds with New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy and Connecticut Gov. Ned Lamont, both fellow Democrats.

The states’ health departments will provide details of how the rule will work, Murphy said.

The announcement comes as summer travel to the states’ beaches, parks and other attractions — not to mention New York City — would normally swing into high gear.

Visitors from states over a set infection rate will have to quarantine, Cuomo said. As of Wednesday, states over the threshold were Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, Florida, North Carolina, South Carolina, Washington, Utah and Texas.

The United States Olympic Committee (USOC) has told U.S. sports federations that athletes worried about their health amid the ongoing Zika virus outbreak should consider not attending the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio, according to Reuters.

Reuters reports, citing anonymous sources, that the news was provided during a conference call with committee officials and leaders of the sports federations in January. Athletic groups were reportedly told they should not go to Brazil if they do not feel comfortable going.

Pregnant women have been advised by U.S. health authorities not to travel to places of Zika transmission to avoid risk of infection. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) also recently updated its guidelines in regards to how to prevent the possibility of transmitting the virus via sex.

“We are closely monitoring the situation through the CDC and have ongoing contact with the International Olympic Committee, the organizing officials in Rio, the World Health Organization and infectious disease specialists with expertise in tropical diseases, including the Zika virus,” Patrick Sandusky, a USOC spokesperson told TIME in an email statement. “Additionally, we’re taking steps to ensure that our delegation and those affiliated with Team USA are aware of the CDC’s recommendations regarding travel to Brazil.”

Gatherings at places of worship over Christmas and New Year have been targeted in the past, particularly in places like Poso and Solo, and could be attacked again

Gatherings of Westerners over this period could also be appealing targets for terrorists. Terrorists have previously attacked or planned to attack such places, including nightclubs, bars, restaurants, international hotels, airports and places of worship in Bali, Jakarta and elsewhere in Indonesia. These types of venues could be attacked again.

Terrorist groups remain active throughout Indonesia despite police disruptions. Police continue to conduct operations against these groups and have stated publicly that terrorist suspects remaining at large may seek to attack Western targets.

You should exercise particular caution around locations that have a low level of protective security and avoid places known to be possible terrorist targets.

Australians should avoid all protests, demonstrations and rallies as they can turn violent without warning.

Indonesia is subject to a range of natural disasters including volcanoes, earthquakes, tsunamis and floods. You should pay close attention to emergency procedures and monitor local warnings.
Visitors to Indonesia, particularly to tourist locations such as Bali and Lombok, should be aware of the specific risks from crime, and from drink-spiking and consumption of alcohol adulterated with harmful substances such as methanol. Tourists may also be exposed to scams and credit card/ATM fraud. There has been an increase in reports of violent crime in Bali, including muggings in the Kuta area. Be aware of your surroundings and conscious of the potential risks of crime (see under Safety and security for more information).

Petty crime, such as opportunistic theft, is common in Indonesia. Thieves on motorcycles may snatch handbags and backpacks from pedestrians. Tourists may be exposed to scams and confidence tricks in Indonesia. Legal disputes are common regarding the purchase of real estate including land, houses, holiday clubs and time share schemes.
You should exercise normal beach safety behaviour and consider carefully the risks involved in using motorcycles, including licence and insurance issues (See under Local travel for more information).

Visitors should be aware that there is a risk of rabies throughout Indonesia, in particular Bali and Nias. See under Health for more information.

We advise you to reconsider your need to travel to Central Sulawesi, Maluku, Papua and West Papua provinces where additional safety and security risks exist. Since October 2012, a number of violent incidents have been reported in Poso, Central Sulawesi.

Since July 2009, there has been a series of violent attacks in the area around the Freeport Mine in Papua province. A number of these incidents have resulted in deaths, including of one Australian. Attacks were reported in the area in December 2013 and January 2014. Further such attacks could occur. Information indicates that attacks may be planned near the area of operation of the Freeport mine.

Ongoing violence in Puncak Jaya District in Papua Province has led to a number of deaths in recent years. There is a possibility of further attacks in Papua and West Papua provinces, including attacks on infrastructure and national institutions.
