Take note, Philadelphia. The Flower Show will soon be in full bloom.
The promise of spring feels nearly within reach thanks to the forthcoming annual Philadelphia Flower Showpresented by the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society.
From March 1 to 9 we’ll be able to say “spring has sprung” a few weeks before the actual first day of the season when the blockbuster Philadelphia Flower Show makes a grand return to the Pennsylvania Convention Center for its 185th show.
This year, the show centers around the theme of ARTiculture, a beautiful union of art and horticulture drawing inspiration from works of art from art museums around the nation and right here in Philadelphia such as the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
ARTiculture
Using the Convention Center as a canvas, exhibitors from across the globe are slated to display 10-acres of floral arrangements, gardens and landscapes in a juried competition.
Gleaning inspiration from the many art and cultural partners, exhibitors will present incredible landscape design, educational displays and much, much more.
Look for the centerpiece entrance garden, designed by Flower Show designer Sam Lemheney, to play off of the works of Alexander Calder, a member of the historic family of artists whose works are found throughout Philadelphia. The flowers, grasses and accessories will not only be a draw, but the garden will also feature the vertical dance troupe BANDALOOP, who will perform above and within the multi-dimensional display.
In addition to the exhibitions, the show will bring back its popular theme nights in addition to shopping opportunities and food options. The flower show is also set to bring a number of new, exciting things to the mix.
New This Year
Look forward to special exhibits, including rarely-seen pop-art flowers by Andy Warhol, the entrance garden inspired by the art of Alexander Calder and a hands-on butterfly garden.
For the first time ever, PHS is slated to present the PHS hot list, a unveiling of what’s hot in the garden world as told by seasoned horticulturists. Learn about state-of-the-art tools, home garden supplies, the coolest flowers and much more.
Also, keep an eye out for Rachael Ray, the celebrity chef, author and television personality, who is slated to join the cast of notable guests in a question and answer series on Friday, March 7.
This year, the Philadelphia Flower Show debuts a social media area, the Green Room for streaming video, live tweeting, Instagrams and more.
As an excitement-builder for the PHS Flower Show, PHS welcomes a number of “flower bombs” throughout the month of February. Keep an eye out for displays at public sites throughout the region — the first of which being at Robertson’s Flowers in Chestnut Hill on February 6.
Also, we hear rumors that the pop-up garden may be returning to Broad Street, too!
