A New Era For Hitsville U.S.A.: The Motown Museum’s $75 Million Expansion

Detroit's musical heartbeat is getting a massive upgrade. The iconic Motown Museum, affectionately known as Hitsville U.S.A., is currently undergoing a transformative $75 million expansion. Set to fully open in 2027, this visionary project will elevate the way visitors experience the legendary history and culture-defining sounds of Motown.

What to Expect in the Expanded Museum

Once completed, the project will add an impressive 50,000 square feet of space to the historic site on West Grand Boulevard. The revamped campus is designed to be highly immersive, catering to fans of all ages and knowledge levels. Highlights of the expanded museum campus will include:

  • Dynamic, Interactive Exhibits: Taking a deeper dive into the history of the artists, the sound, and the social impact of the Motown era.
  • Ford Motor Company Theatre: A state-of-the-art performance space to showcase live talent and educational programs.
  • Professional Recording Studio: Continuing the building's legacy of music creation.
  • Expanded Retail and Cafe Space: A brand new casual-style cafe offering light food and drinks, alongside a significantly larger retail experience for exclusive merchandise.

Construction Timeline and Status

The expansion has been a true labor of love for the community and museum leadership. In November 2025, Motown alumni gathered to sign the final steel beam before it was raised into place, marking a major structural milestone. Because of the heavy construction taking place behind the original structures, the museum paused its public tours in January 2026. According to CBS News Detroit, museum CEO Robin Terry confirmed that $72 million of the $75 million goal has already been raised, with the grand reopening slated for 2027.

Preserving a Musical Legacy

This massive undertaking builds upon the original vision of Esther Gordy Edwards, who founded the museum in 1985 to preserve the legacy of the label started by her brother, Berry Gordy. While the physical footprint of the museum is expanding dramatically, the soul of Hitsville U.S.A.—including the original Studio A where legends like Stevie Wonder, The Supremes, and Marvin Gaye recorded their earliest hits—will remain completely intact.

For music lovers planning their future travels to Detroit, the expanded Motown Museum is poised to be an absolute must-visit destination when the doors officially reopen in 2027!
