Amtrak’s Newest Route Exceeds All Expectations

Amtrak has launched several new trains and routes in the last few years. In August, the highly anticipated NextGet Acela trains made their debut, and a few days ago, the company announced that a train between Albany and New York City would finally be restored.

In addition, Amtrak’s latest routes continue to impress passengers with their record-breaking results. A few months ago, the Amtrak Borealis service reached 250,000 passengers, just over a year following its debut. However, there’s another route recently added to Amtrak’s network that is now breaking all records: the Mardi Gras Service. Here is everything you should know about this route and its brand-new ridership milestone.

Amtrak’s Mardi Gras Exceeds All Expectations, Welcoming Double The Originally Estimated Passengers

Amtrak’s Mardi Gras service was launched only a few months ago; however, it is already proving to be a highly successful route. According to Knox Ross, the chairman of the Southern Rail Commission, between mid-August and the end of September, it welcomed a total of 19,000 passengers. Yet, numbers continue to increase.

As of Thursday, 23, the total figure of passengers who chose this line is 30,000. Knox Ross declared that this is over double Amtrak’s original estimates. Amtrak initially estimated a total of 71,000 passengers for Mardi Gras’ first year. However, if numbers remain stable, the total number of passengers in the first year may reach over 150,000.

Ridership is now averaging about 90%, and Amtrak even had to include an extra car, adding 60 additional seats on specific days. But what exactly is the Mardi Gras Service?

The Mardi Gras service was launched on August 18, 2025, to replace Gulf Coast Limited, which had to stop operating in 2005 due to the damage caused by Hurricane Katrina.

The train connects New Orleans in Louisiana with Mobile in Alabama, stopping at four stations along the way.

Mardi Gras Service Stops

New Orleans, Louisiana

Bay St. Louis, Mississippi

Gulfport, Mississippi

Biloxi, Mississippi

Pascagoula, Mississippi

Mobile, Alabama

The entire trip takes 3 hours and 43 minutes, with two departures per day, both from Mobile and New Orleans. Trains feature free Wi-Fi and no middle seats, as well as a café service offering locally sourced menu items for all tastes.

Why Is The Mardi Gras Service So Popular?

There are a variety of reasons why this route is now getting so many passengers. For instance, Amtrak is now offering a 3X points deal to its Amtrak Guest Rewards® members. The company is celebrating the launch of the Mardi Gras Service by allowing its customers to earn triple points on all Amtrak Mardi Gras travel if they complete at least three trips from August 18 to November 18.

Bonus points will be added retroactively, and 3X points will also be awarded for all additional travel on this route. In addition, the Mardi Gras Service is now incredibly popular among sports fans. Saints fans have been using this route to watch their favorite team, and several matches are now planned for November and December.

What Did Amtrak Fans Say About The Mardi Gras' Ridership Milestone?

In a Reddit post sharing the recent Mardi Gras record-breaking numbers, several people left comments showing their enthusiasm for the news. For instance, someone pointed out that U.S. citizens are tired of driving, and more and more people are now opting for trains.

Others, such as Big_daddy_sneeze wrote, 'Exciting news. I’ve been contemplating doing a Gulf Coast vacation and spending a day at each town along the Mardi Gras route.' Some users also suggested adding new stops, while others reported boarding the train and not seeing a single empty seat.

For now, it seems that the Mardi Gras service will continue to shatter all passenger projections. Hopefully, its success will continue in the upcoming months as more people decide to opt for train travel instead of choosing highly polluting transportation methods, such as flights and cars.

The Largest Passenger Plane Can Hold 850 Seats - Here's Which Airlines Use It

Airbus is one of the most familiar names in aerospace design and manufacturing, with more than 12,000 aircraft, both commercial and freight, in service worldwide. The company was established in 1969, but it can trace its roots back to a 1967 agreement between France, Germany, and England that coordinated efforts to advance the field of aviation. The first Airbus model, the A300B1, took flight in 1972. Thirty-five years later, in 2007, the largest passenger aircraft in the world, the Airbus A380, entered service — and several airlines still use it today.

The A380 is the only commercial airplane with a full-length double-deck design. This allows carriers to devote one deck to premium seats and one deck to economy seats and still accommodate more than 400 economy passengers. When it's configured for only economy passengers, this massive jet can hold 853 people. One of its closest competitors, the Boeing 747-8, can't come close, with most configurations holding about 460 passengers.

It's not only unique to fly on, the A380 is also hard to miss in the sky above you. Its distinctive shape and 262-foot wingspan, along with its four massive engines, make it a favorite for plane spotters.

A380s in the air today

Airbus ceased production of the A380 in 2021, but it's still used for long-haul flights all over the world. The airlines that operate the A380 are British Airways, Emirates, Lufthansa, Qantas, Etihad, Asiana, Singapore Airlines, Korean Air, All Nippon Airways, and Qatar Airways. Though it has a maximum capacity of more than 850 seats, many airlines have it configured for fewer. The three-class layout with about 500 seats is popular.

Since 2007, the A380 has logged more than 800,000 flights, carrying more than 300 million passengers all over the world. Emirates has the largest fleet of A380s of any airline, which is not surprising when you consider the aircraft's range of about 8,000 nautical miles. Its flights between Dubai and London's Heathrow airport are the busiest routes consistently flying A380s.

While some airlines reportedly had big plans for the A380 when they first took flight, envisioning the ultimate luxury, casinos, and even gyms, those visions never came to fruition. In 2020, Business Insider reported that some analysts see the A380 as Airbus's biggest mistake, designed for a non-existent market. While there are still thousands of A380s in the air, commercial aviation is gravitating toward smaller, more fuel-efficient planes that can still fly long distances with fewer passengers. The Airbus A350-1000, which Qantas selected to replace its fleet of A380s, seats up to 400 passengers and has a range of 9,000 nautical miles.

San Francisco Travel Launches First-Ever 'Martini Trail' Featuring 23 Perfected Martinis

The San Francisco Travel Association has unveiled The San Francisco Martini Trail, a curated journey highlighting 23 standout martinis and local establishments in the City by the Bay.

Few drinks are more debated—or celebrated—than the martini. Its exact birthplace may be disputed, but San Francisco played a defining role in shaping its rise to global fame. Conceived in the Bay Area during the Gold Rush and refined in the city's pioneering saloon scene, the martini's simplicity captures San Francisco's spirit: refined yet unpretentious, endlessly reinvented, and impossible to forget.

“The Martini Trail is both a toast to San Francisco's history and a taste of its future. This is where the martini found its swagger and where it continues to be reinvented,” said Anna Marie Presutti, President and CEO of San Francisco Travel. “San Francisco is always raising the bar. We're thrilled to work with local businesses to celebrate the city's craft cocktail scene.”

The Martini Trail spans San Francisco's distinctive neighborhoods, from the Embarcadero to The Richmond. Featuring downtown institutions as well as chic newcomers, each stop celebrates the city's role in shaping cocktail culture one perfect pour at a time.

Curated by San Francisco–based food, drink, and travel writer Omar Mamoon—whose work has appeared in Condé Nast Traveler, The San Francisco Chronicle, and Esquire's “Best Bars” and “Best New Restaurants”—the 23 selections spotlight the creativity and range of San Francisco's bar scene.

“The list shines a light on just a fraction of the many bars and restaurants in San Francisco making excellent martinis,” said Mamoon. “The Martini Trail is just a starting point—use it as a fun way to explore the city and make your own trail, too. There's so much to uncover and explore in SF.”

In addition to the 23 standout martinis, The San Francisco Martini Trail website features Mamoon's favorite 11 establishments to drink a martini, plus details on the evolution of the iconic cocktail.

The 23 establishments highlighted on the San Francisco Martini Trail are:

· Absinthe

· Martuni's

· Balboa Café

· Osso Steakhouse

· Bar Iris

· Pearl 6101

· Bar Maritime

· Sam's Grill & Seafood Restaurant

· BIX

· Starlite

· Brazen Head

· Stookey's Club Moderne

· Californios

· Tadich Grill

· Club Waziema

· The Progress

· Hi Dive Bar

· True Laurel

San Francisco Travel held its launch event for the trail at Le Parc Bistrobar in the Galleria Park Hotel in homage to martini lore. The boutique hotel, formerly the Occidental Hotel, is where bartender Jerry Thomas is said to have popularized or created the Martinez, a martini precursor. The hotel celebrates its mixology roots with a daily Sipping Hour, serving complimentary gin martinis in the lobby to hotel guests.

US Passport Drops From Top 10 Most Powerful For First Time—Here’s What That Means

What Makes Some Passports More Powerful Than Others?
For the first time in 20 years, the U.S. passport is not among the top 10 most powerful in the world. getty

Henley & Partners monitors which countries’ passports deliver the most and least global mobility, based on data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA). Global mobility is a key measure of soft power for citizens when they travel abroad. Citizens of Singapore—the No. 1 passport in the ranking—enjoy access to 193 travel destinations out of 227 around the world visa-free. The second most powerful passport in the world, South Korea, provides access to 190 destinations without a visa. The U.S. passport is just behind Lithuania and Iceland in the ranking.

Why Has The U.S. Passport Lost Power?

The United States’ “isolationist mindset is now being reflected in America’s loss of passport power,” Annie Pforzheimer, senior associate at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, said in a statement. More specifically, the United States’ ranking on the Henley index is suppressed by the country’s lack of reciprocity. While American passport holders can access 180 out of 227 destinations visa-free, the U.S. itself allows only 46 other nationalities to enter visa-free, putting it in 77th place on the Henley Openness Index, where it barely outpaces Iraq. Henley & Partners noted the United States’ slide this year began with America’s loss of visa-free access to Brazil in April due to a lack of reciprocity, exacerbated by being left out of China’s rapidly expanding visa-free list. “Most recently, Somalia’s launch of a new eVisa system and Vietnam’s decision to exclude the US from its latest visa-free additions delivered the final blow, pushing it out of the Top 10,” Henley said in a press release.

“The declining strength of the US passport over the past decade is more than just a reshuffle in rankings—it signals a fundamental shift in global mobility and soft power dynamics,” Dr. Christian H. Kaelin, chairman of Henley & Partners, said in a statement. “Nations that embrace openness and cooperation are surging ahead, while those resting on past privilege are being left behind.”

Here Are The World’s Top 10 Most Powerful Passports

As ranked by the Henley Passport Index (countries accessible visa-free):

1. Singapore (193)

2. South Korea (190)

3. Japan (189)

4. Germany, Italy, Luxembourg, Spain, Switzerland (188)

5. Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Ireland, Netherlands (187)

6. Greece, Hungary, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, Sweden (186)

7. Australia, Czechia, Malta, Poland (185)

8. Croatia, Estonia, Slovakia, Slovenia, UAE, United Kingdom (184)

9. Canada (183)

10. Latvia, Liechtenstein (182)

Among the standout moments will be the chance to hear directly from leading voices in the industry, including celebrated chefs from both the Tasting Room and Towngas Gourmet Avenue.

Celebrated chefs showcase Cantonese fusion at the Tasting Room

For a once-in-a-lifetime culinary experience, the Tasting Room is a must. The venue's restaurant, under the theme Taste the Extraordinary: Beyond Cantonese Flavour, will bring together a star-studded lineup of chefs.

London-based chef Andrew Wong, owner of A. Wong and the first Chinese restaurant outside of Asia to hold a two-Michelin stars, can’t wait to visit Hong Kong for the premier culinary event. “I’m honoured to be part of the Hong Kong Wine & Dine Festival,” he says. “I look forward to working alongside so many talented local chefs to present an unforgettable experience that brings modern Chinese flavours to life while paying homage to Cantonese traditions.”

Cheung Yat Fung, the acclaimed chef behind three-Michelin-starred Chao Shang Chao (Chaoyang), sees the festival as a platform for cultural exchange. "Hong Kong’s reputation as a gourmet capital where East meets West is perfectly embodied by the Hong Kong Wine & Dine Festival, which bring top chefs from across the world together under one roof," he shares. "I’m excited to showcase my signature Chaozhou cuisine at the Tasting Room and collaborate with esteemed peers to craft an innovative menu that blends tradition with creativity.”

Jayson Tang of Michelin-starred Man Ho Chinese Restaurant – JW Marriott Hotel Hong Kong looks forward to showcasing the city’s culinary heritage. “As a local chef, I see the festival as a chance to share the elegance and versatility of Cantonese cuisine with a global audience.”

His fellow Hong Kong chef, Menex Cheung of China Tang echoes this sentiment, adding that the festival taps into the city’s creative spirit. “Hong Kong has always been a melting pot of culture and flavour. At the Wine & Dine Festival, I want guests to experience how that spirit of innovation and fusion defines our food scene – and why it continues to make our city so special.”

Adding a dynamic new voice is Jung Ji-sun, the rising Korean chef and “Queen of Dim Sum” from Netflix’s Culinary Class War, owner of Tian Mi Mi Restaurant in Korea. “The festival is unlike any other event in Asia,” she observes. “Joining hands with respected chefs to reinterpret Cantonese flavours is inspiring and humbling. As a Korean chef, I’m thrilled to put my own spin on these traditional dishes. Sharing them with guests at the Tasting Room will be a highlight for me, and I hope they enjoy them just as much.”

Skip the line to Hong Kong’s hottest tables at Towngas Gourmet Avenue

The action continues at Towngas Gourmet Avenue, where award-winning restaurants – usually booked out weeks in advance and recognised by the Michelin Guide and Black Pearl Restaurant Guide – will gather in one dynamic space, no reservation needed.

Alvin Leung, known as 'The Demon Chef,’ is ready to turn heads with his molecular gastronomic creations, bringing his unique flair from his two-Michelin-starred Bo Innovation, which is participating in the festival for the first time. “I couldn’t be more excited about the Wine & Dine Festival,” he says. “This festival showcases the best of what Hong Kong has to offer, and it’s a real privilege to be part of such an amazing lineup. I can’t wait to present some of my signature dishes including ‘X-treme Xiao Long Bao’, H2egg and more for the first time here. I encourage everyone to come by and experience these dishes—they’re a fun blend of tradition and innovation that I believe will surprise and delight your taste buds!”

French culinary icon Anne-Sophie Pic – whose restaurants hold 10 Michelin stars, more than any other female chef – will have her one-Michelin-star restaurant, Cristal Room by Anne-Sophie Pic, featured at this year’s Wine & Dine Festival for the first time. The restaurant will showcase signature dishes such as Chinese peas from Yunnan with caviar and flower crab seasoned with sobacha geranium. “For me, cooking is about emotion and memory,” says Pic. “Every dish is tied to personal stories – and the Hong Kong Wine & Dine Festival is a wonderful chance to share them with Hong Kong. Joining this festival allows me to connect with a vibrant culinary community and showcase the unique flavours that inspire my work. I will continue my exploration of the Asian continent, which is so dear to me, reinterpreting and incorporating ingredients through the lens of French culinary traditions.” Head chef of Cristal Room by Anne-Sophie Pic, Marc Mantovani, will be present at the event to showcase some of the best offerings from the restaurant.

Meanwhile, Adam Wong, executive chef of Hong Kong’s three-Michelin-starred Forum, returns to once again shine a spotlight on one of his most celebrated dishes and a true Hong Kong classic. “I had such a rewarding experience at Wine & Dine Festival last year,” he reflects. “It’s inspiring to see even more world-renowned talent joining this time, and I’m delighted to share our signature Braised Forum Dried Abalone once again. In addition to the abalone, we’ll be offering a variety of dishes, including limited-edition Dried Longan, Red Dates, Lotus Seed and Lily Bulb Ice Cream, Braised Oxtail, and more. These dishes represent the iconic flavors of Cantonese heritage, and I hope everyone enjoys them at the festival.”

Disney Is Building A Brand-New, State-Of-The-Art Theme Park In The United Arab Emirates

When people associate the word Disney with a location, the first places to come to mind are usually adorned with palm trees and endless sunshine. Although Disney has expanded its ventures from the U.S. to include both Europe and Asia, the company isn't finished with its global expansion. No, what may come as a surprise to fans of the popular franchise is that a new theme park, the seventh of Disney's resorts, will be making its way to the Middle East. Partnering with development company Miral (which will build, fund, and operate the park), The Walt Disney Company is setting sights on its newest park location on Yas Island in the United Arab Emirates.

The island is already a large hub in the world of entertainment, playing host to Ferrari World Abu Dhabi (featuring the world's fastest rollercoaster), Yas Waterworld, SeaWorld Abu Dhabi, Warner Bros World Abu Dhabi, and the Formula 1 Yas Marina Circuit, making it an easy choice for Disney's new theme park location. According to Disney CEO Bob Iger in a press release, "This is a thrilling moment for our company as we announce plans to build an exciting Disney theme park resort in Abu Dhabi, whose culture is rich with an appreciation of the arts and creativity. It will rise from this land in spectacular fashion, blending contemporary architecture with cutting-edge technology to offer guests deeply immersive entertainment experiences in unique and modern ways."

While specific details about the park and its designs and attractions are still under wraps, early reports suggest that the Abu Dhabi location will differ from Disney's traditional resorts by incorporating advanced technologies and a distinct regional flair. However, the park will still maintain the storytelling magic and illusions that have defined Disney for nearly a century.

What to know about Disney's Abu Dhabi location

In keeping on theme with Disney magic, Josh D'Amaro, chairman of Disney Experiences, detailed that the park will be "showcasing groundbreaking technology and visionary architecture (but also) a modern castle unlike anything we've ever created." According to a press release put out by Disney, aside from unique, technologically advanced rides and incredible designs, upon completion, the park will also "offer signature Disney entertainment, themed accommodations, unique dining and retail experiences, and storytelling in a way that celebrates both the heritage of Disney and the futuristic cultural essence of Abu Dhabi."

The UAE is already a leading tourist destination (as well as a top destination for digital nomads), with its airports seeing one billion passengers pass through between 2015 and 2024. This played a large part in Disney's decision to expand its endeavors to this location, as D'armaro mentioned in a Q&A at the MoffettNathanson Conference that Abu Dhabi sits within a four-hour flight of nearly one-third of the world's population. Yas Island being less than 30 minutes from Abu Dhabi and an hour from Dubai, also makes its location a top choice.

D'Amaro also stated that "this is a crossroads for the world essentially ... The numbers were clear. This is a part of the world we wanted to be operating in." On top of all that, the Abu Dhabi Transport Company recently announced its plans for Abu Dhabi Tram Line 4, which would connect travelers from the airport straight to Yas Island, making access to the parks even easier. In an interview with CNBC, Iger discussed the anticipated timeline for the project. "We're not pinning down a date yet," he said. "It typically takes us between 18 months and two years to design and fully develop, and approximately five years to build, but we're not making any commitments right now."

This Is The First Hotel In Aruba To Ever Receive A MICHELIN Key – And It Got Two

Boardwalk Boutique Hotel Aruba has entered a new league. The Palm Beach property has been awarded Two MICHELIN Keys by the MICHELIN Guide 2025 — making it the first hotel in Aruba ever to receive the distinction. It now joins a shortlist of 21 Caribbean destinations recognized in the inaugural MICHELIN Keys program.
The main pool at the Boardwalk Boutique Hotel in Aruba.

The award places Boardwalk among just 572 hotels worldwide to earn Two Keys, out of more than 7,000 evaluated by the Guide. The designation is reserved for hotels that MICHELIN inspectors deem exceptional — properties defined by strong identity, sense of place and a consistently high standard of service.

Boardwalk’s story is distinctly local. Founded in 2011 by Kimberly and Stephanie Rooijakkers, who transformed a modest surf retreat into a boutique hotel, it has built a reputation around a personal approach to hospitality. The property’s 49 casitas are set within a former coconut plantation a short walk from Palm Beach, emphasizing intimacy over scale.

This year’s recognition underscores a shift in how MICHELIN evaluates hotels. The Keys are intended to spotlight properties with clear character and cultural connection rather than size or star ratings. Boardwalk stood out for its design, service, and its ability to reflect Aruba’s local identity in a high-touch, independent format.

For Aruba, the award signals growing visibility in the global luxury travel market, where MICHELIN designations increasingly influence where travelers choose to stay. For Boardwalk, it represents something rarer: a small, locally owned hotel competing at the same level as some of the most recognized names in hospitality.

With just six months to go until American Airlines officially celebrates its centennial, the airline is unveiling a special livery that will begin flying in November on a Boeing 777-300 registered as N735AT. This special Flagship® livery blends one of the airline’s original liveries with a modern flair as American will upgrade the aircraft to feature a new, more luxurious interior.

“American has thoughtfully chosen a design that evokes our rich history while looking ahead to our next 100 years,” said Ron DeFeo, American’s Chief Communications Officer. “Throughout American’s history, ‘Flagship®’ has always been recognized as our premium travel experience. Our renewed focus on the customer experience is making premium travel better than ever across all aspects of our customers’ travel journeys. Painting the original Flagship® design on our Flagship® aircraft is a powerful way to honor that legacy while embracing the future.”

Behind the design

At the base of the livery is the airline’s Silver Eagle® paint color, which is currently found on more than 1,600 aircraft in American’s mainline and regional fleet. Across both sides of the aircraft, the iconic orange lightning bolt motif makes its bold reappearance after first debuting nearly 90 years ago on the Douglas DC-3. The DC-3 captivated passengers with American’s first foray into premium air travel experiences that the airline is now taking to new heights with its Boeing 777-300 aircraft flying to far-flung international destinations including Australia, Japan, the United Kingdom and beyond.

When American took delivery of new DC-3 aircraft, they were named based on cities the airline served at the time. In keeping with tradition, American will name this aircraft “Flagship DFW” as an homage to the airline’s home and largest hub.

Toward the rear of the aircraft, customers will notice a roundel featuring one of the most recognizable motifs from American’s history: the eagle connecting the world. American flies to more than 350 global destinations today and operates more flights carrying more customers than any other airline in the world — a reminder of how far the airline has come since its first flight in 1926.
The Flagship Knoxville housed in the American Airlines CR Smith Museum in Fort Worth, Texas.

Since American first took delivery of passenger aircraft in the 1930s, the airline has been known for offering an elevated “Flagship” experience first on board coast-to-coast transcontinental routes and today also includes the airline’s long-haul international network.

While customers recognize American’s premium Flagship® lounges and Flagship® Business class that have welcomed travelers for years, they will continue to enjoy the Flagship® experience next year, when the airline begins refreshing the interior of its Boeing 777-300 fleet to include Flagship Suite® seats.

American continues to focus on elevating the onboard customer experience to deliver a modern travel journey. After making their debut earlier this summer, the Flagship Suite® seats, Premium Economy and upgraded Main Cabin products continue to earn rave reviews from customers and are part of the airline’s commitment to innovation. Highlights include:

The Flagship Suite® seats are American’s first-ever onboard business class product featuring privacy doors, wireless charging pads and a one-of-a-kind chaise lounge seating option with an adjustable headrest pillow. American is the first U.S. carrier to introduce wireless charging in Premium Economy, which includes the introduction of new headrest wings and new calf and footrests for enhanced comfort. Main Cabin customers will experience the airline’s elevated international inflight experience, including 4K QLED screens — the first in the U.S. to be introduced in this cabin — and USB-C and AC power. These upgraded amenities will also be featured on board refreshed 777-300s next year, featuring 70 Flagship Suite® seats and 44 Premium Economy seats.
American's Flagship Suite® debuted on newly designed Boeing 787-9 aircraft this summer and will be on refreshed Boeing 777-300.

Be a part of American’s centennial

For more than 100 years, American has taken to the skies with timeless, iconic designs, and now, key moments from its rich history are available for purchase. The American Airlines Brand Store features a curated selection of historic advertising, vintage imagery and exclusive centennial-branded merchandise. Perfect for the holiday season, these keepsakes and gifts honor the legacy of aviation and design that has defined American for generations. Merchandise collections will continue to expand throughout the centennial year, offering even more ways to commemorate this milestone.

British Airways Showcases The Future Of Its Lounges With Brand-New Openings In Miami And Dubai

British Airways is proudly celebrating the launch of its new lounge design concept with the opening of two new lounges on its global network, marking a significant step change in the airline’s premium offering.
Striking full-service bar in Miami lounge

Working in partnership with global architecture and design firm Gensler, these openings debut the flag carrier’s new design concept that will serve as the vision for future lounge developments.

Calum Laming, British Airways’ Chief Customer Officer, said: “We’re thrilled to be unveiling our new design concept with new lounges in both Miami and Dubai. These unique spaces have been created with our customers in mind and are the next step in our extensive lounge transformation plan. Whether they’re looking to relax, dine, work or enjoy a drink at the fully staffed bar, there’s something for everyone.

“We’re proud to bring our brand to life in these spaces, having blended our British originality with each destination’s unique character. This approach has allowed us to make the most of brilliant talents from around the world. We’re grateful to all the teams, both within British Airways and our partners, who’ve helped make our vision a reality. We are incredibly excited to welcome our customers to these new lounges.”

Rooted in hospitality, the new design concept establishes a cohesive architectural identity that connects British Airways lounges worldwide. Drawing inspiration from the airline’s heritage and the character of each destination, the spaces are designed to feel welcoming, intuitive, and restorative, creating moments of calm, connection, and delight for customers wherever their journey takes them.

Reflecting the airline’s playful side, ‘look-up’ moments feature across British Airways’ lounges, adding a touch of surprise to the experience. Upon arrival in Miami, for example, guests are greeted by a floor mural that, when viewed through the mirrored ceiling, reveals the words ‘London Calling’ as a homage to the airline's home.

MIAMI

This is the first time in decades that the airline has had its own lounge available to customers in Miami. Opening today, it spans 13,000 sqft, becoming the largest lounge outside of London solely operated by British Airways.

Located in Terminal E, directly above its departure gate, the space is a celebration of the airline’s British originality, charm and wit, combined with features that have taken inspiration from the city, such as its Art Deco design and iconic buildings. With large windows along its walls, this lounge has sweeping views across the airfield and makes use of the beautiful Miami skies and light. The airline used Miami-based contractors, such as TGA Consulting, Nunez Construction and Bermello & Ajamil architects, as well as US-sourced materials that reflect both quality and craftmanship.

Drinks with a view

A striking full-service bar serves as the focal point of the lounge and is carefully positioned in front of windows that flood the space with light. Experienced bartenders are on hand to craft a selection of classic cocktails and mocktails, including a Prickly Margarita – unique to this lounge - as well as a large range of spirits and beers, including local ale.

In the zone

Designed with versatility in mind, the layout of the lounge offers five distinctive zones that flow seamlessly into each other while offering individual spaces. In addition to the central bar, it includes a main dining space, focus pods, and a lowered central lounge with partitions for those looking for a private space.

Two shower suites and colourful striped washrooms, inspired by traditional Miami deck chairs, provide travellers with a refreshing reset, complete with a reception and amenities.

Britain meets Miami in the kitchen

The lounge features a self-serve dining area offering locally-sourced dishes that champion seasonal Miami produce with a British twist, all freshly prepared in the new state-of-the-art restaurant-style kitchen. Customers can expect local papaya and lacinato kale salad with toasted coconut and citrus honey vinaigrette, and seared South Florida flounder fish with lemon, Kalamata olives, fried capers and rice.

Concorde Dining Room

Guests travelling in First are invited to enjoy an elevated à la carte dining experience in the exclusive Concorde Dining Room. Alongside a more personalised service, the experience includes a range of dishes such as Wagyu beef strip loin with roasted trumpet mushrooms and a truffle reduction or roasted diver scallops. Champagne and English Sparkling Wine, including Pommery, Cuvée Louise 2005, is also available for guests.

DUBAI

Located in Terminal 1 at Dubai International Airport and spanning nearly 5,800 sqft, the new space offers customers an elevated experience that blends contemporary British design and the rich spirit of the UAE.

Brought to life by local contractor Al Tayer Stocks, the new space nods to traditional Middle Eastern style, featuring sweeping arches, patterned metal panelling, and mirrored walls that have taken inspiration from local architecture. A full-service bar acts as a focal point of the space as part of the new design concept.

A blend of British and Middle Eastern design

Customers are welcomed by a framed entrance leading into a space that balances warm hospitality and exclusivity. Artisanal finishes such as fluted marble, antique mirrored ceilings, and bespoke detailing create an inviting and sophisticated space.

The lounge’s ‘look-up’ moment is a chandelier framed by a mirrored ceiling in the main dining area, with the iconic British Airways speedmarque embedded above. Lighting and mirrors are used throughout to reflect light, bringing a sense of openness to the space.

Washrooms feature locally sourced geometric tiles, while seating incorporates British heritage fabrics, adding character and comfort.

Fusion of Middle Eastern flavours and British classics

The lounge has a dedicated self-serving dining area offering a range of options including an Arabic breakfast, mezze selection, cakes, and cheeseboard. Customers can indulge in a selection of premium Champagnes and English Sparkling wines, along with expertly crafted cocktails, such as a Dubai Chocolate Martini, and Bucks Free Fizz, made using fresh orange juice with Lyre's Classico Grande Non-Alcoholic Sparkling Wine.

Coffee Planet, a UAE-founded coffee brand renowned for its premium Arabica beans, is available along with Birchall, the airline’s new global British tea partner.

Concorde Dining Room

Customers travelling in First can also enjoy top notch service in the exclusive Concorde Dining Room, accessible via a dedicated entrance. The à la carte menu features Middle Eastern signature dishes such as Arabic mezze and sweet dessert, Umm Ali, and British Original favourites including the famous Concorde Wagyu burger and Scottish smoked salmon. This exclusive area features a variety of seating, from table, to bar, to armchair.

Ashley Dowell, Design Director, Senior Associate at Gensler, said: “We are honoured to have partnered with British Airways to carve the path for the global lounge concept being introduced around the world. Hospitality driven and inspired by the heritage of British Airways, combined with the rich vibrancy of each location, the lounges will reflect a global journey framed through a British lens. Welcoming, intuitive and bold, the new lounges offer a surprising retreat for travellers to relax, work and socialise in the midst of their travels.”

Kyoto Japan To Charge 'Tourist Tax' Upwards Of $65 Per Night

Japan’s ancient capital is taking drastic steps to rein in overtourism.

Starting in March 2026, Kyoto will introduce the highest accommodation tax in Japan, charging visitors more to stay in the city’s hotels, inns and guesthouses.

Under the new system, tourists at high-end hotels could pay up to ¥10,000 (about $65) per person, per night, in tourism taxes: a tenfold increase from current rates.

Budget travelers will also see jumps from about ¥200 to ¥400 (about $1.30 to $2.60), while mid-range rooms will jump from ¥500 to ¥1,000 (about $3.30 to $6.50) per person.

City officials say the extra funds are expected to more than double Kyoto’s tourism tax revenue and will go toward managing crowds, preserving cultural sites, and easing strain on local infrastructure.

When applying to hike the fee, Kyoto travel authorities insisted that tourists should bear the cost of maintaining the very attractions that draw them into the city.

While tourism drives Kyoto’s economy, many residents say the city has become nearly unlivable in peak seasons. Narrow streets clogged with selfie-snapping visitors, and popular districts like Gion, known for its traditional tea houses and geisha, have attempted to crack down on tourists after incidents of trespassing and aggressive photography. Japanese media reports these efforts have been unsuccessful.

The new tax aims to fund enforcement and reduce friction between visitors and locals, but critics warn it may not go far enough. Japan welcomed more than 35 million foreign tourists in 2024, and officials hope to reach 60 million by 2030.

Kyoto isn’t alone in feeling the squeeze. Fox News Digital previously reported that Mount Fuji, another of Japan’s iconic destinations, is dealing with its own side effects of booming tourism.

Trash, overcrowding and safety concerns have grown so severe that officials have begun calling the landmark a "trash mountain."

Visitors are being asked to pack out their garbage and respect new crowd limits, as local authorities scramble to protect the mountain’s natural beauty.

Kyoto’s move may be a sign of what’s ahead for other tourist-heavy regions. As Japan’s popularity surges, cities are being forced to choose between economic opportunity and preserving the peace that makes them so popular in the first place.

United Airlines To Add Third Tel Aviv–New York Flight In 2026 Summer Schedule

United adds a third Tel Aviv–New York/Newark flight starting March 2026, offering up to four daily nonstop flights to the US next summer as part of its expanded transatlantic schedule, with more destinations than any other U.S. carrier.

United Airlines announced plans to introduce a third flight frequency between Tel Aviv and New York/Newark, beginning March 30, 2026. The new service will operate four times a week, joining United’s existing twice-daily flights on the route.

The addition comes as part of the airline’s newly revealed Summer 2026 schedule, which expands United’s transatlantic network with service to four new European destinations. United currently offers more flights from Tel Aviv than any other U.S. carrier and will remain the only airline flying from Israel to both Chicago and Washington, D.C., when those routes resume in November 2025.

“Our third frequency between Tel Aviv and New York/Newark gives customers in Israel even more choice,” said Marcel Fuchs, United’s managing director of international sales. “Next summer, we’ll offer up to four nonstop flights per day from Tel Aviv to the United States, with seamless connections to more than 100 destinations across the Americas.” United’s new Tel Aviv–New York/Newark flight (UA168/167) will operate on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays aboard a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner. Departures from Tel Aviv will leave at 12:55 a.m., arriving in Newark at 5:45 a.m., while return flights from Newark will depart at 8:20 p.m., arriving in Tel Aviv at 2 p.m. the following day.

The schedule expansion also includes new nonstop flights from New York/Newark to Split, Croatia; Bari, Italy; Glasgow, Scotland; and Santiago de Compostela, Spain. United will add new service between Washington/Dulles and Reykjavik, Iceland, and expand transpacific operations with year-round daily flights from New York/Newark to Seoul, South Korea. In summer 2026, United plans to serve 46 destinations across the Atlantic—more than any other U.S. airline—with over 800 weekly roundtrips. Globally, the carrier expects to operate more than 850 daily flights to and from over 150 international destinations, including 41 served exclusively by United.

New flights are subject to government approval and are available for booking at United.com and on the United ap

United Schedules First Starlink-Equipped Mainline Flight

United made history yesterday at 8 a.m. when United flight 2940 took off from Newark/New York to Houston, marking the first time a major U.S. airline has offered Starlink Wi-Fi on a mainline flight with connectivity across both personal devices and inflight entertainment screens. The airline expects to install Starlink on up to 15 mainline 737-800 planes each month; more than half of United's regional fleet already offers Starlink. By the end of the year, the airline expects to have an additional aircraft type certified to offer Starlink.

More than 170 customers onboard the Boeing 737-800 will enjoy the same kind of high-speed, low-latency internet experience they have at home, unlocking experiences like live TV and streaming services, shopping, gaming and more. On October 15, the Starlink-equipped mainline aircraft is also expected to fly from Houston (IAH) to Fort Lauderdale (FLL) on flight 365 and Fort Lauderdale (FLL) to Houston (IAH) on flight 445 where it will end the day in Houston.

United will install two Starlink antennas on each 737-800 aircraft. The airline is set to install nearly 2,940 antennas across its entire fleet – the flight number for the first customer flight.

Starlink Wi-Fi is free for United MileagePlus® members, and customers will receive a notification before their flight if it's equipped with Starlink.

"We're committed to raising the bar when it comes to the onboard experience, and with Starlink, we're changing how people fly," said David Kinzelman, United's Chief Customer Officer. "Whether it's catching a live game, streaming an award show or working, United customers won't miss a beat when they're onboard a Starlink-equipped flight."

United's Starlink is breaking the Wi-Fi barrier, and the new service unlocks a new way to travel with experiences like:

Live streaming: Whether you catch a live sports event, watch a favorite movie or show and more, passengers can access their personal streaming services without buffering, lag or need to download in advance.

Real-time work collaboration: Download/upload files, share and edit documents, and stay in sync with your team in real-time.

Gaming at 30,000 feet: Pick up where you left off and play live games and follow along on live gaming streaming services.

Seamless shopping: Stay connected online, schedule grocery delivery and make restaurant and travel reservations all from the comfort of your seat.

Connect multiple devices at once: Customers will be able to access Starlink on all devices at once, like their seatback screen, phone, tablet, computer and more.

United's first Starlink-equipped regional flight took place on a regional jet in May 2025, and the airline now has Starlink installed on more than half of the aircraft in its regional fleet. Initial customer scores on those flights have been noteworthy with 90% of customers appreciating the ability to stream onboard with Starlink's high-speed, easy-to-use and consistent connection.

The rollout of Starlink across United's fleet aligns with the airline's plans to have 300,000+ seatback screens across its fleet – more than any other U.S. airline – as it takes delivery of hundreds of new airplanes and retrofits existing aircraft. Over the last several years, United has invested billions of dollars in enhancing the customer experience, and by providing more value for customers, the airline aims to earn stronger brand loyalty.

World's Tallest Bridge Opens Glass Cafe At A Staggering 2,600 Feet In The Air

China’s Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge, which opened to traffic on Sept. 28, is opening a glass cafe 800 meters (2,624 feet) in the air called Interstellar Coffee.

According the Guizhou Daily Tianyan News, the cafe, which is perched atop one of the towers, will have two floors and a 360-degree unobstructed view thanks to its glass walls. It will feature Captain George Coffee with plans to expand its selection in coming months.

Visitors will reach the dizzying height via a glass elevator, which can hit the top in under one minute. There’s also a 1,900-foot high glass walkway for visitors, and tourists will also get the chance to bungee jump off the massive bridge.

The Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge is located in Southern China over the Beipan River and has become the tallest bridge in the world. It cut transit time in the Guizhou province from two hours to two minutes, NBC News reported, citing local officials.

At 4,600 feet in length, it also sets the record for the world’s longest bridge in a mountainous region, according to NBC News.

Bridge construction in China has increased as a part of the Chinese government’s war on poverty, the outlet previously reported. The Guizhou province now has 32,000 bridges that have been completed or are under construction compared to less than 3,000 in the 1980s.

The Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge opened after three years and eight months of construction and now connects two major tourist areas in the region.

PETA Celebrates Landing A Vegan Dish On American Airlines' In-Flight Menu

Fort Worth-based American Airlines will have a new, vegan menu item starting Oct. 5, PETA said in a press release.
Credit: WFAA

American Airlines will offer a new vegan dish on its cross-country flights, PETA, the animal welfare non-profit, said.

Fort Worth-based American Airlines will have a new, vegan menu item starting Oct. 5, PETA said in a press release. Passengers on select cross-country flights will have the option to select a vegan egg scramble, including hash browns, vegan cheese, spinach, corn, red pepper and Just Egg, a popular egg substitute.

PETA celebrated the addition as the latest vegan-friendly move. Last fall, the airline added oat milk creamer to its in-flight beverage program after talks with PETA, the press release states.

“American Airlines is soaring above the competition with a savory vegan egg dish that’s kind to hens and appeals to conscientious travelers,” says PETA President Tracy Reiman. “PETA urges other airlines to get on board by following American Airlines’ compassionate and business-savvy example.”

Air Canada Returns To Israel With Complementary Alcohol Service

Air Canada resumes Tel Aviv–Toronto flights Thursday with free wine and beer for economy passengers. As the dollar hits a three-year low, Israeli travelers are urged to seize cheaper flight deals before prices rebound.

After a five-month hiatus, Air Canada will resume flights to Israel on Thursday, operating a daily Tel Aviv–Toronto route. The Canadian flag carrier’s return coincides with a major service upgrade that has made it the only traditional North American airline to offer complimentary beer and wine in economy class on all flights, alongside signature Canadian snacks.

The move is part of Air Canada’s effort to enhance its image and passenger experience amid criticism over baggage and service fees. The airline’s reinstated route marks another step in the gradual recovery of international air traffic to and from Israel since the outbreak of the war.

Two other carriers — British Airways and Iberia Express — will also resume daily flights to Tel Aviv later this month, starting October 26, connecting Israel to London and Madrid. On the same date, Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) will restart its Copenhagen–Tel Aviv route with three weekly flights, returning after a nine-and-a-half-year absence.

In addition, Greece’s Sky Express plans to launch daily direct flights between Athens and Tel Aviv beginning December 2.

However, several airlines continue to stay away. Italy’s ITA Airways and Air India both announced they would extend flight suspensions to and from Tel Aviv until at least December 31. Ryanair confirmed in late September it would not renew service to Israel, while easyJet does not plan to resume flights before March 28, 2026.

Despite rumors, Turkish Airlines has no set return date. The carrier, which halted all Tel Aviv flights at the start of the war in October 2023, has been linked to speculation about a possible comeback following renewed cease-fire talks and Ankara’s involvement in mediation. For now, however, no official decision has been made.

Meanwhile, Arkia Airlines CEO Oz Berlovich is urging Israelis to take advantage of the recent drop in the dollar, which fell to 3.28 shekels ahead of the Sukkot holiday — its lowest point in three years.

“This is the time to plan your next vacation and save hundreds or even thousands of shekels,” Berlovich said. “Since flights are priced in U.S. dollars, this is a rare opportunity to book now and lock in lower costs. Anyone who doesn’t take advantage of this is simply missing out.”

Travelore Tips: What To Do If Your Flight Is Delayed Or Canceled During The US Government Shutdown

The federal government shutdown has entered its second week, and already shortages of air traffic controllers have strained operations and disrupted flights at some U.S. airports.

Reagan National Airport became the latest this week to report delays because of staffing issues on Wednesday. But earlier in the week there were also problems at airports in Chicago, Newark, Denver and Nashville, and the tower even had to shut down for several hours in Burbank, California.

Experts, as well as union leaders representing air traffic controllers and security screeners, warn that the impact could grow significantly worse if the shutdown continues and employees start to miss paychecks.

Here is what to know about your rights as a passenger and what you can do if delays and cancellations start piling up:

Check before going to the airport

It is better to be stuck at home or in a hotel than to be stranded in an airport terminal, so use the airline’s app or flight websites to make sure that your flight is still on before heading to the airport. This FAA site,https://nasstatus.faa.gov/, can be checked to see if there are widespread delays at your airport.

Kyle Potter, executive editor of Thrifty Traveler, suggests also closely monitoring the news if you have upcoming travel plans.

“A deal, in theory, could come through Congress any day now, and that could put all of this doubt lingering over air travel to an end pretty quickly,” Potter said.

My flight was canceled. Now what?

If you are already at the airport, it is time to find another flight. Get in line to speak to a customer service representative, and call or go online to connect to the airline’s reservations staff. It also helps to reach out on X, the site formerly known as Twitter, because airlines might respond quickly there.

Airlines will rebook you on a later flight for no additional charge. The good news right now is that this is not a peak travel time, so travelers stand a better chance of finding seats. But the busy holiday season is right around the corner, and at those peak times, passengers might have to wait days for a seat on a new flight.

Consider other travel options

If these problems do become more widespread, you might consider whether it makes sense to travel by train, car or bus instead. But there is really no way to predict when and where a staff shortage might happen, and the ongoing shortage of controllers is so critical that even a small number of absences can cause problems.

Potter said the shutdown is different from when a single airline is having problems and travelers can just pick another carrier. This is creating problems for entire airports at once.

“As these problems expand and spread the longer the shutdown drags on, it’s unlikely that there will be one airline running on time if the rest of the them are failing,” he said. “It’s going to affect the entire system over time.”

Can I ask to be booked on another airline?

You can, but airlines aren’t required to put you on another carrier’s flight. Some airlines, including the biggest ones except Southwest and the discount airlines, say they can put you on a partner airline. But even then it is often hit or miss.

Am I owed a refund?

If you no longer want to take the trip, or have found another way of getting to your destination, the airline is legally required to refund your money, even if you bought a non-refundable ticket. It doesn’t matter why the flight was canceled.

“If the airline cancels your flight, you can say, ‘Alright. I will take a refund and get my money back,’ ” Potter said. “The important piece is that you get your payment returned to you. You’re not just settling for an airline voucher that may expire in a year or less.”

You are also entitled to a refund of any bag fees, seat upgrades or other extras that you didn’t get to use.

Can I get compensation?

U.S. airlines are not required to pay additional cash compensation and cover lodging and meals for passengers who are stranded, even if a flight cancellation or a severe delay is the airline’s fault.

The Biden administration had proposed a rule that would have changed that and required airlines to pay passengers for delays and cancellations in more circumstances, with compensation proposed between about $200 and as high as $775. But the Trump administration scrapped that last month, and the airlines praised him for doing so.

Jeff Klee, the CEO of CheapAir.com, has recommended researching alternate flights while you wait to talk to an agent.

What airlines will cover

Each airline is different. The U.S. Department of Transportation has a site that lets consumers see the commitments that each carrier makes for refunds and covering other expenses when flights are canceled or significantly delayed.

Other tips

Travel insurance might help if you bought a policy when you booked or used a travel credit card that offers that product, but Potter said you shouldn’t assume you will be covered even if you have insurance. Check the fine print to see if you are covered in situations like this when a shortage of workers causes flight disruptions.

If many flights are canceled, airline agents will soon be overwhelmed by requests. If you’re traveling in a group with someone who has a higher status in the airline’s loyalty program, call using their frequent flyer number. You may get quicker service.

You also can try calling your airline’s international support number, which is usually listed online and may have shorter wait times.

Be nice. The agent is likely helping other frustrated travelers, too, and yelling won’t make them more willing to help. Remember, the cancellation isn’t their fault.
