American Airlines Expands In Chicago With 100 New Daily Departures In Spring 2026

American Airlines is taking its ongoing expansion in Chicago to the next level with 100 new daily departures from O’Hare International Airport (ORD) — bolstering its schedule with additional flights to more than 75 popular destinations just in time for spring break. The airline’s largest ORD spring schedule on record enhances the strongest network in the U.S. and means more for American’s customers: more flights, more choices, more popular destinations and more opportunities to see the world. Additionally, the airline is expanding its summer seasonal service from ORD to two sought-after European destinations: Paris and Dublin. It’s the latest in American’s comprehensive expansion plan that has already enhanced the customer experience, improved operational reliability and deepened its century-long roots in the Chicago community.

“We’re committed to rebuilding our Chicago hub to be stronger and more compelling for our customers, and our 2026 plans are both emblematic of that objective and an exciting way to end a year defined by bold growth and investment at ORD,” said Steve Johnson, American’s Vice Chair and Chief Strategy Officer. “Our continued focus on Chicago during the next year — a year that we celebrate the centennial of American and our 100th year of service at ORD — will make our network even more attractive and continue to enhance the travel experience, improve reliability and introduce more premium options for our customers. Strategic investments at O’Hare in 2025 set the stage for a record-breaking 2026, reflecting our unwavering commitment to our customers, team members and the Chicagoland communities we serve, as well as our long-standing legacy to Chicago and O’Hare — and to our shared future.”

American’s largest-ever ORD spring operation gives Chicago travelers more options to reach top destinations across its global network while boosting tourism to the city and offering more customers a convenient one-stop connection through ORD.

The airline is adding 100 peak daily departures to its spring schedule with increased service in 75 markets, including Boston (BOS); Cincinnati, Ohio (CVG); Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW); Fort Myers, Florida (RSW); and Orlando, Florida (MCO). The airline is doubling its service from ORD to popular spring break destinations like Las Vegas (LAS); Panama City, Florida (ECP); and Sarasota, Florida (SRQ), as well as well as offering more than twice as much service from ORD to Savannah, Georgia (SAV), and San Francisco (SFO) than what was originally available for spring 2026.

This expansion brings peak ORD operations to more than 500 daily departures this spring, representing 30% more departures than last spring. Reaching 500 peak daily departures solidifies ORD’s spot as the third-largest hub in American's global network and among the top 10 largest hub operations of all major U.S. carriers. It also extends its spot as the fastest-growing legacy airline hub this year.

These additional flights are now available for purchase through American’s mobile app or aa.com.

The airline announced the extension of summer seasonal service from ORD to Dublin to operate about a month longer and Paris to operate three months longer than previous seasons. The extended seasonal service is part of American’s globe-spanning international network connecting customers with the airline’s best-in-class group of global partners.

American kicked off a major expansion at ORD in summer 2025 with 20% more flights and 22% more seats compared to the 2024 summer schedule. Since then, the airline added nearly 30 new destinations to its ORD network, including Honolulu (HNL), Mexico City (MEX), Madrid (MAD) and Chicago’s only nonstop service to Naples, Italy (NAP). Additionally, the airline doubled service to warm weather destinations this winter in Mexico, the Caribbean and Central America — making American the leading carrier from ORD to the region — and increased frequencies to traditional business markets like Seattle (SEA), Houston (IAH), Fayetteville/Bentonville, Arkansas (XNA), and more to provide customers more flexibility.

Airline hubs act as “connection factories,” driving economic growth and business development in their home cities while strengthening regional communities with crucial air service. They multiply travel opportunities for business and leisure by offering convenient one-stop connections, creating a ripple effect that fuels local economies, generates jobs and gives customers more choices.

American’s recent expansion at ORD delivers on that promise, bringing more tourism and business opportunities to Chicago while giving travelers in smaller markets access to a vast global network and unmatched flexibility. With added service to destinations like Cedar Rapids, Iowa (CID); Bloomington, Illinois (BMI); Flint, Michigan (FNT); and more, American’s ORD hub opens doors for customers, helping them expand business reach and make long-haul travel a reality.

As the nation’s largest dual-hub airport, ORD has long thrived on strong competition among hub carriers, which keeps fares lower and doubles options for travelers. With three new peak daily flights to SFO and Cleveland (CLE) and two to Denver (DEN), customers now have even more ways to travel to, from and through Chicago, and, importantly, they have more choice.

Travel experience upgrades draw customer loyalty

American’s expansion goes beyond adding flights through a comprehensive strategy to secure American’s position as the airline of choice at ORD. Chicago travelers are responding to American’s enhanced focus on customer experience that spans every facet of the travel journey. In the third quarter, enrollments in American’s industry-leading AAdvantage® loyalty program grew 7% systemwide year over year, with Chicago leading the way at approximately 20% growth, more than double the system average.

Customer-first commitment: This year, American renewed its focus on the customer experience with a holistic look at the travel journey. Enhancements include a redesigned mobile app, connection-saving technology and the new premium-configured Boeing 787-9 aircraft that is becoming the mainstay of American’s Chicago-London service. A more reliable operation: Strategic investments in operational performance — including the airline’s new boarding process, new devices and initiatives that improve baggage handling and technology that streamlines aircraft pushback — have contributed to a more reliable operation at ORD. American was the most on-time hub carrier at ORD this year. New gates fuel ongoing growth: American recently made a significant investment in its operational presence at ORD with the acquisition of two new gates, which made way for three new destinations, resulting in 29 destinations added to ORD in 2025.

More premium options: After upgrading all flights to operate on dual-class regional jets, American is the only hub carrier to offer premium options on every flight from ORD.

American’s growing Chicago hub

American will offer more than 500 daily departures from Chicago (ORD) next summer as part of its continued commitment to the hub. The airline has added new service to more than 25 destinations from ORD and added frequencies in other markets this year, making the airport one of the fastest-growing hubs in the country. With this momentum, American is focused on thoughtfully growing its ORD network to more than 180 destinations and adding more flights in popular markets.

This growth will continue in 2026 with the addition of service to Erie, Pennsylvania (ERI); Lincoln, Nebraska (LNK); and Tri-Cities, Tennessee (TRI). And, as customers have positively responded to American’s winter network, the airline will extend winter-only offerings to Santa Fe, New Mexico (SAF) and Key West, Florida (EYW) into the summer between May 21 and Sept. 8.

Separately, American will also expand summer service from ORD to Hilton Head, South Carolina (HHH), and to Pensacola (PNS) and Panama City (ECP) in Florida. Previously operated only on the weekends, flights to these cities will operate daily between Feb. 12 and Sept. 8.

American will continue to grow options for Chicagoans to travel with increased frequencies across the airline’s network. In the spring, American will increase departures by more than 30% compared to 2025, offering more than 480 peak daily departures from ORD just in time for spring break.

All destinations served from ORD this spring will return next year, making American the only hub carrier at the airport to achieve this feat. As part of its demonstrated investment in Chicago, the airline will offer more than 25 additional destinations next spring versus 2025, including a mix of new destinations and seasonal routes that will start earlier.

All of American’s flights from ORD operate with dual-class aircraft, giving customers the opportunity to enhance their travel experience with the selection of a premium cabin. In addition, American’s ORD to London (LHR) route will continue to offer Flagship Suite® seats for customers. Chicago was the first city in American’s network to receive this elevated premium offering.

Connecting smaller cities with the world

Traveling across the country and around the world will be easier than before on American’s global network. Starting June 4, American will add service to its 240th destination in the U.S.: Lincoln, Nebraska (LNK). No other airline serves as many domestic destinations as American, and now residents from LNK will have competitive one-stop service to international destinations such as Athens, Greece (ATH); Cancun, Mexico (CUN); Rome (FCO) and Sao Paulo (GRU).

In the Western U.S., American will grow its Phoenix (PHX) hub with seven new routes. New service to Bozeman, Montana (BZN); Kalispell, Montana (FCA); and Rapid City, South Dakota (RAP) will make it easier for travelers from states including California, Nevada and Arizona to get to national parks, monuments and more. Meanwhile, new flights to Abilene (ABI) and McAllen (MFE) in Texas will provide travelers one-stop access to destinations across the Western U.S. and Mexico.

This growth is part of American’s consistent commitment to powering global access through its hubs. Recently, the airline launched service to cities including Carlsbad, California (CLD); Golden Triangle, Mississippi (GTR); Santa Maria, California (SMX); and Sun Valley, Idaho (SUN). In 2026, the airline will also be the only airline connecting the U.S. with Bimini, Bahamas (BIM), and will add service to Vero Beach, Florida (VRB).

Collectively, American’s hub airports power global access to more than 350 destinations around the world served by the airline. Together with American’s airline partners, customers can access more than 1,000 destinations.

As a leading global airline, American Airlines offers thousands of flights per day to more than 350 destinations in more than 60 countries. The airline is a founding member of the oneworld alliance, whose members serve more than 900 destinations around the globe. American Airlines Unveils Special Flagship Livery Ahead Of Centennial Year

With just six months to go until American Airlines officially celebrates its centennial, the airline is unveiling a special livery that will begin flying in November on a Boeing 777-300 registered as N735AT. This special Flagship® livery blends one of the airline’s original liveries with a modern flair as American will upgrade the aircraft to feature a new, more luxurious interior.

“American has thoughtfully chosen a design that evokes our rich history while looking ahead to our next 100 years,” said Ron DeFeo, American’s Chief Communications Officer. “Throughout American’s history, ‘Flagship®’ has always been recognized as our premium travel experience. Our renewed focus on the customer experience is making premium travel better than ever across all aspects of our customers’ travel journeys. Painting the original Flagship® design on our Flagship® aircraft is a powerful way to honor that legacy while embracing the future.”

Behind the design

At the base of the livery is the airline’s Silver Eagle® paint color, which is currently found on more than 1,600 aircraft in American’s mainline and regional fleet. Across both sides of the aircraft, the iconic orange lightning bolt motif makes its bold reappearance after first debuting nearly 90 years ago on the Douglas DC-3. The DC-3 captivated passengers with American’s first foray into premium air travel experiences that the airline is now taking to new heights with its Boeing 777-300 aircraft flying to far-flung international destinations including Australia, Japan, the United Kingdom and beyond.

When American took delivery of new DC-3 aircraft, they were named based on cities the airline served at the time. In keeping with tradition, American will name this aircraft “Flagship DFW” as an homage to the airline’s home and largest hub.

Toward the rear of the aircraft, customers will notice a roundel featuring one of the most recognizable motifs from American’s history: the eagle connecting the world. American flies to more than 350 global destinations today and operates more flights carrying more customers than any other airline in the world — a reminder of how far the airline has come since its first flight in 1926.
The Flagship Knoxville housed in the American Airlines CR Smith Museum in Fort Worth, Texas.

Since American first took delivery of passenger aircraft in the 1930s, the airline has been known for offering an elevated “Flagship” experience first on board coast-to-coast transcontinental routes and today also includes the airline’s long-haul international network.

While customers recognize American’s premium Flagship® lounges and Flagship® Business class that have welcomed travelers for years, they will continue to enjoy the Flagship® experience next year, when the airline begins refreshing the interior of its Boeing 777-300 fleet to include Flagship Suite® seats.

American continues to focus on elevating the onboard customer experience to deliver a modern travel journey. After making their debut earlier this summer, the Flagship Suite® seats, Premium Economy and upgraded Main Cabin products continue to earn rave reviews from customers and are part of the airline’s commitment to innovation. Highlights include:

The Flagship Suite® seats are American’s first-ever onboard business class product featuring privacy doors, wireless charging pads and a one-of-a-kind chaise lounge seating option with an adjustable headrest pillow. American is the first U.S. carrier to introduce wireless charging in Premium Economy, which includes the introduction of new headrest wings and new calf and footrests for enhanced comfort. Main Cabin customers will experience the airline’s elevated international inflight experience, including 4K QLED screens — the first in the U.S. to be introduced in this cabin — and USB-C and AC power. These upgraded amenities will also be featured on board refreshed 777-300s next year, featuring 70 Flagship Suite® seats and 44 Premium Economy seats.
American's Flagship Suite® debuted on newly designed Boeing 787-9 aircraft this summer and will be on refreshed Boeing 777-300.

Be a part of American’s centennial

For more than 100 years, American has taken to the skies with timeless, iconic designs, and now, key moments from its rich history are available for purchase. The American Airlines Brand Store features a curated selection of historic advertising, vintage imagery and exclusive centennial-branded merchandise. PETA Celebrates Landing A Vegan Dish On American Airlines' In-Flight Menu

Fort Worth-based American Airlines will have a new, vegan menu item starting Oct. 5, PETA said in a press release.
Credit: WFAA

American Airlines will offer a new vegan dish on its cross-country flights, PETA, the animal welfare non-profit, said.

Fort Worth-based American Airlines will have a new, vegan menu item starting Oct. 5, PETA said in a press release. Passengers on select cross-country flights will have the option to select a vegan egg scramble, including hash browns, vegan cheese, spinach, corn, red pepper and Just Egg, a popular egg substitute.

PETA celebrated the addition as the latest vegan-friendly move. Last fall, the airline added oat milk creamer to its in-flight beverage program after talks with PETA, the press release states.

“American Airlines is soaring above the competition with a savory vegan egg dish that’s kind to hens and appeals to conscientious travelers,” says PETA President Tracy Reiman. “PETA urges other airlines to get on board by following American Airlines’ compassionate and business-savvy example.”

American Airlines Doubles Access From Chicago To Warm Weather Destinations

American Airlines is giving travelers a head start on planning winter getaways from Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD) with significant growth to warm weather destinations. The airline is adding seven new destinations from ORD, including five new international destinations to Mexico, the Caribbean and Central America — more than doubling its service to the region with more flights from Chicago than any other carrier.

While the summer season is beginning to ramp up, American is giving Chicagoans a network for all seasons with new routes to popular destinations. This winter, American will add new service from Chicago to Curacao (CUR); St. Croix (STX); St. Maarten (SXM); Guatemala City (GUA); and San Jose, Costa Rica (SJO). The airline already serves 11 destinations in the region from ORD, nearly all of which will fly more frequently this winter compared to last year. Additionally, American will add new service from Chicago to Roanoke, Virginia (ROA) and Akron/Canton, Ohio (CAK), providing additional domestic connectivity through American’s Midwest hub.

“As we get our first taste of spring in Chicago, we are already looking ahead to giving our customers a reprieve from the bitter Midwest winter with more than double the flights to popular vacation spots,” said American's Vice President of ORD Operations Ben Humphrey. “Building on our major Chicago expansion, we continue to strengthen our network and reaffirm our commitment to the Chicago communities we serve — our loyal customers, the local economy and our team members who are the driving force behind our operation.”

With this expansion, American will lead the way from ORD with more service than any other carrier from Chicago to Mexico, the Caribbean and Central America, making it more convenient for customers to access sought-after vacation destinations like St. Thomas (STT); Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands (GCM); Aruba (AUA); and Liberia, Costa Rica (LIR) — which will all be increasing from one flight per week to up to daily service.

Building on its status as the largest airline in Mexico with service to 30 destinations in the country, American will add more flights from ORD to Cancun (CUN), Los Cabos (SJD) and Puerto Vallarta (PVR).

“With 17 new destinations just this year, American’s major growth is a testament to their commitment to our great city. We thank them for their continued partnership and the impact this expansion has on our local economy – keeping the airport one of the biggest economic engines for the region,” said Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson.

For more than 40 years, the industry-leading AAdvantage® program has provided customers a simplified way to earn miles, status, benefits and more. Whether flying on American’s new nonstop from ORD to Naples, Italy (NAP) — the gateway to the picturesque Amalfi Coast — this summer or on one of American’s partners to other global destinations, earning miles with the AAdvantage® program is easy and free. Customers can redeem their miles for air travel and beyond, including experiences, car rentals, hotels and more.

Tickets for American’s expanded new service from ORD will be available for purchase on aa.com or through American’s mobile app starting May 5.

Bringing new destinations to O’Hare

Just this year, American has added 17 new destinations for Chicago customers to enjoy, including Honolulu (HNL); Madrid, Spain (MAD); and Halifax, Nova Scotia (YHZ). Among those are five new destinations served only by American from ORD, including St. Croix (STX); Curacao (CUR); Idaho Falls, Idaho (IDA) — near Yellowstone National Park; Hyannis, Massachusetts (HYA) — the Cape Cod region and Naples, Italy (NAP).

Additionally, this summer American will be the only airline to offer premium options for customers on every flight from Chicago. Starting June 5, the airline will operate all flights from ORD on dual-class regional jets, giving customers more opportunities to enjoy a premium experience.

The airline is making the travel experience stress-free for Chicago customers with recent enhancements to boarding and check-in at ORD. That includes new self-service kiosks and a lobby reconfiguration for faster check-in and better flow. American recently implemented its industry-leading boarding technology at ORD and is enhancing the boarding process systemwide with updated boarding groups and five extra minutes of boarding time starting today.

American Airlines And DFW Airport Reveal Plans For State-Of-The-Art New Terminal

American Airlines and Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) revealed plans for Terminal F that will enable them to continue growing together. The improved plan will focus on delivering a modern customer experience with double the number of gates, new facilities to expand international operations, increased lounge and premium space, a new customer check-in experience and a dedicated parking garage.

The agreement increases the planned investment in Terminal F to about $4 billion and accelerates the construction plans so customers can enjoy the new space sooner. Terminal F will feature DFW’s signature terminal experience, operated entirely by American, and extends the airline’s Use and Lease Agreement with DFW through 2043. This is expected to provide certainty and cost predictability to support the continued growth of American and DFW.

“DFW is American’s largest and most critical hub, and with this expanded plan for Terminal F, DFW has a clear path to become the largest airline hub in the world,” said American’s CEO Robert Isom. “Dallas-Fort Worth is one of the fastest growing regions in the country, and we’re excited that American and North Texas will continue to grow together. Terminal F will elevate our customer experience in a big way, providing customers with a fantastic new facility and state-of-the-art amenities. We thank Mayor Johnson, Mayor Parker, the rest of the DFW Airport Board, and Sean and the DFW team for their partnership. We’re excited for the future at DFW and all the growth that’s to come in North Texas.”

Investment expands the scope of Terminal F with a focus on the customer

In 2023, American and DFW reached a 10-year Use and Lease Agreement with preapproved capital investments, including the construction of Terminal F as a 15-gate facility, which customers would access from Terminal E via the airport’s Skylink system.

With a positive long-term outlook for growth in customers and North Texas, the Terminal F expansion program will deliver more space for widebody aircraft and international flight processing and includes additional spaces for leading amenities, shops, restaurants and public art, providing customers flying out of DFW with more options.

The expanded plans for Terminal F will provide customers with a walking connection to Terminal D in addition to a new Skylink station, creating even more access across DFW’s terminals. The Terminal F parking garage is designed with a built-in curbside circulation and an innovative baggage drop and check-in area to maintain the quick access to check in and security that customers have come to expect.

The original first phase of Terminal F is well underway and scheduled to be operational in 2027, with the enhanced features to come online shortly after. American plans to occupy all the gates of the new terminal, creating a seamless experience for connecting customers and driving efficiencies for the airline’s operations.

Full support from North Texas leaders

The robust air service that American provides has made DFW Airport the third busiest airport in the world. Dallas Mayor Eric L. Johnson, Fort Worth Mayor Mattie Parker, DFW Board of Directors Chair DeMetris Sampson, DFW CEO Sean Donohue and American CEO Robert Isom gathered at DFW to make the announcement.

“DFW Airport is getting even bigger and better with the exciting new plans for Terminal F,” said Dallas Mayor Eric L. Johnson. “This monumental investment by American Airlines is set to elevate an already world-class international airport. This is yet another example of how the growing partnership between American Airlines and DFW Airport continues to strengthen Dallas’ gateway to the rest of the world while boosting our economy and reinforcing our status as a premier international city.”

“Fort Worth-based American Airlines continues to double down on DFW as its home base with another major investment in the airport’s infrastructure and long-term health,” said Fort Worth Mayor Mattie Parker. “Today’s announcement ensures that DFW will be ready to accommodate the historic growth happening in Fort Worth and all of North Texas into the future.”

"DFW is growing fast, and we are committed to sharing this economic opportunity with businesses in our community as we move forward," said DeMetris Sampson, Chair of the DFW Board of Directors. "DFW has become the economic engine of our region, and we know that this investment will ensure the long-term sustainability of the airport.”

"In the last decade, DFW has grown its passenger traffic by 50 percent and exceeded the wildest expectations of our founders to become the third-busiest airport in the world," said Sean Donohue, CEO of DFW. "Thanks to our close partnership with Robert Isom, American Airlines remains a competitive advantage that continues to show the strength of the airport as a global hub that is supporting the massive economic growth of the Dallas Fort Worth region. Moving forward with Terminal F in this way ensures that DFW and American maintain that momentum.”

Continuing to invest in the customer experience

The increased investment in DFW Terminal F is just one more way American is focused on enhancing its customer experience across the travel journey. Later this month, American will open its A-West Flagship® lounge and Admirals Club® lounge at Philadelphia International Airport, providing customers with an elevated space to recharge before their flight. The airline also recently announced complimentary high-speed satellite Wi-Fi for AAdvantage® members inflight beginning in January 2026, sponsored by AT&T*. With this, American will offer free inflight connectivity on more aircraft than any other airline. https://www.allconnect.com/providers/att

Building on the partnership with DFW and commitment to North Texas

This expanded agreement reinforces American’s commitment to DFW and North Texas and is an example of the strong relationship between American, DFW, the City of Dallas and the City of Fort Worth.

Just two years ago, the Use and Lease Agreement outlined major capital projects over the next 10 years, including an estimated $2.72 billion for the expansion of the Central Terminal Area, including a major reimagining of Terminal C, gate expansions extending from Terminal A and Terminal C, and significant upgrades to roadways and terminal access.

With a stronger investment in Terminal F, American is all in on North Texas. The airline is a massive economic driver for the Dallas-Fort Worth region, employing more than 36,000 team members in the area, and carrying nearly 70 million customers through DFW in 2024. *Complimentary inflight Wi-Fi will be powered by Viasat and Intelsat.

Travelore News: American Airlines Pulls 2025 Forecast On Travel Demand Worries From Trump Tariffs

American Airline pulled its 2025 financial forecast on Thursday, mirroring its peers, as growing consumer apprehension over an escalating trade war result in carriers facing a level of uncertainty not seen since the COVID-19 pandemic.

Economic uncertainty can impact non-essential spending such as travel as consumers turn cautious amid fears of recession from Trump's fluctuating trade policies.

This has created fresh headache for major U.S. airlines, which just two months ago were riding a wave of strong travel demand.

American joined peers Southwest Airlines and Alaska Air to withdraw their annual forecasts, following similar moves by Delta Air and Frontier earlier this month.

United Airlines recently gave two different forecasts and factored in an economic recession into one of them, saying it was impossible to predict the macroeconomic environment this year. Shares of the carrier were down 1.3%, while peers Southwest and Alaska were down 4% and 7%, respectively. Delta and United shares were also down marginally.

American Airlines is also reeling with higher costs tied to expensive labor contracts signed last year.

It forecast its second-quarter adjusted profit per share in the range of 50 cents to $1, compared with analysts' expectations of 99 cents, according to data compiled by LSEG.

In the first quarter, it reported an adjusted loss of 59 cents per share, smaller than Wall Street expectations of 65 cents.

The airline reported a total operating revenue of $12.55 billion, down marginally from a year earlier.
