American Airlines is doubling down on Philadelphia International Airport (PHL) as its premier gateway to Europe. For summer 2027, the carrier is scheduling an impressive 21 nonstop European destinations from Philadelphia, marking its largest-ever trans-Atlantic network from the hub.
This massive expansion solidifies PHL’s position far ahead of any other American Airlines hub for European travel. To put this scale into perspective, both JFK and Dallas/Fort Worth will each offer only ten European destinations in July 2027—less than half of what is planned for Philadelphia.
Three Brand-New European Destinations
The crown jewels of this 2027 expansion are three brand-new, daily nonstop routes from PHL. The new schedule will give travelers direct access to some of Europe's most captivating cities:
- Porto, Portugal (OPO): Flights begin March 28 on the brand-new Airbus A321XLR, giving travelers direct access to the stunning Douro Valley.
- Vienna, Austria (VIE): Starting May 6, also utilizing the Airbus A321XLR. This route features an extended season running through early January 2028, making it easier than ever to experience Europe's magical winter Christmas markets. American will be the only U.S. airline serving Vienna.
- Reykjavík, Iceland (KEF): Launching May 27 on an Airbus A321neo. This marks American's return to Iceland for the first time since the pandemic, capitalizing on the rising trend of "coolcations".
A Mix of Year-Round and Seasonal Reach
Out of the 21 European routes, American is providing a strong nine-city year-round backbone focusing on major hubs like London (which will see two daily flights), Paris, and Madrid. The additional 12 seasonal routes cater heavily to summer leisure demand, with daily flights to highly sought-after vacation spots like Naples, Nice, Athens, and Venice. The vast majority of these trans-Atlantic flights will be operated by the carrier's Boeing 787 Dreamliners.
Whether you are planning to hike the glaciers of Iceland or wander the historic streets of Vienna, PHL is positioning itself as the ultimate launchpad for your 2027 European getaway. Tickets for the new routes are available for booking now.
