Travelore News: American Airlines Expands At Chicago O'Hare With 14 New Routes for 2026/2027

While Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta might win for sheer passenger volume, Chicago O'Hare (ORD) takes the crown for the highest number of aircraft movements in the world. Recognizing the strategic importance of this bustling Midwestern hub, American Airlines is aggressively expanding its footprint with a massive slate of 14 new routes rolling out through 2026 and into 2027.

Going Global: A New Long-Haul to Tokyo

The crown jewel of this expansion is undoubtedly the addition of a new transcontinental route to Tokyo Narita Airport (NRT). Launching in late March 2027, this will become American's 11th long-haul destination out of O'Hare. The daily flight will be operated on a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, giving Midwestern travelers a highly anticipated, direct gateway to Japan right in time for cherry blossom season.

Mainline Domestic Growth

Looking to stay a bit closer to home? American is also bringing three new mainline domestic routes to O'Hare:

• Maui, Hawaii (OGG): Starting mid-December, American will run a seasonal daily service to Maui on a Boeing 787-8, offering a perfect winter escape through early April.
• Ontario, California (ONT): Also launching in mid-December, this daily route will be operated by 737 narrowbodies, providing another convenient access point to Southern California.
• San Jose, California (SJC): Rounding out the mainline domestic additions is new service to the heart of Silicon Valley.

A Massive Regional Push

A key reason O'Hare handles so many flights is its dense network of regional connections. American Eagle (operated largely by SkyWest and Envoy Air) accounts for 10 of the 14 new routes, dramatically increasing regional connectivity throughout the year:

• Launched in Early to Mid-2026: Lewisburg, WV; Shenandoah, VA; Tri-Cities, TN; Allentown, PA; Erie, PA; Lincoln, NE; and Marion, IL.
• Coming in Late 2026: South Bend, IN (October); Charlottesville, VA (November); and Harlingen, TX (December).
