Europe’s Top 5 Scenic Rail Journeys

Railbookers, custom made rail vacation specialists, share their top recommendations for scenic rail journeys in Europe. For more information call 1-888-829-3040, or visit www.railbookers.com.
Railbookers are also offering a 5% discount on 2016 vacations when booked before August 31 2015.*
Swiss Lakes and Mountains
Switzerland is a treasure trove of scenic railway journeys. In the summer months the verdant pastures roll lusciously from the edge of the tracks into the horizon, in the winter the country unfolds like a veritable Narnia. Travel from Montreux to Interlaken on the Golden Pass Line. Rise up over Lake Geneva, gaze in wonder at the Swiss Riviera, travel through a mountain tunnel and coast through resorts like Gstaad and Châteaux d’Oex. Hit the high point (over 4.000 feet) before Zweisimmen and snake through the Simme Valley. Perhaps layover in Interlaken and take a route to Europe’s highest railroad station at the summit of Jungfraujoch.

Norway in a Nutshell
This is a route with no ‘off season’: snow-dusted in winter, set ablaze by autumn hues, sleepy in the spring and sparkling in the summer. Norway in a nutshell combines the Bergen Railroad, the Flam railroad, the Aurlandsfjord, the Nærøyfjord and the Stalheimskleiva road. Hard to pronounce, easier to enjoy, the route is possible in a day but turning it into a vacation with a night or two in Oslo is well worthwhile. From Oslo it is full steam ahead over the Flam railroad, descending deep into the fjord along the world’s steepest regular-track railroad. You drop over 2,000 feet in an hour as the panorama shifts from grand mountains to sparkling waterfalls – it’s a short journey, but there will not be a second to take your eyes off the window!

London to Fort William
Arrive at London's Euston station after a days sight-seeing, doze off after a “wee dram” of whiskey and wake up the next morning across the border. It is civilized, time-effective and harks back to a different, more romantic era. And then there is the scenery. Fall asleep traversing London’s suburbia and wake up seemingly in the middle of nowhere, the sun glinting through the blinds and deer bounding past the window. After exploring Fort William, the real treat begins. Often voted one of the world’s most picturesque rail journey, you will catch glimpses of crofter’s cottages, tiny churches, the pristine coastline and deep green mountain panoramas, before crossing the Glenfinnan Viaduct famous for its starring role in the Harry Potter movies.

Germany’s Rhineland
Catch the train from London to Brussels and change onto a high speed train to Cologne before crossing into Germany. Board a train winding down the Rhine Valley through luscious greenery to Koblenz, abundant with palaces, churches, fountains and a real ‘old world’ charm. Cruise down the river or take a daytrip to historic Rudesheim, before heading up the Moselle. The tracks are paved through the heart of the Rhineland-Palatinate and trace the river banks along the Moselle Stretch from Koblenz to Trier – Germany’s oldest city – which boasts a UNESCO-listed Cathedral and a picture perfect market square. After you have explored, continue on to the fairytale landscapes of Luxembourg to complete your vacation.

Munich to Verona via the Brenner Pass
Combine some of Europe’s most stunning cities with rail travel as scenic as any of Europe has to offer. The Bavarian capital of Munich plays host to every charming Alpine cliché imaginable, which of course means you will find the finest surrounding mountain passes. There are fast trains that will take you from here to the Austrian skiing capital of Innsbruck, but why sacrifice scenery in favor of time when you are on vacation? Skirt around the bases of the Alps, meander past glittering lakes and glide through the resort town of Garmsich-Partenkirchen on the regional train instead. Lap up the snow dusted, mountainous views before taking to the tracks once more, this time past the vineyards and mountains of the Brenner pass to Verona.

Eurostar Looks To The Future With New e320 Trains

On Thursday, high-speed train operator Eurostar unveiled the new e320 train, which will go into service next year. The train is named for its max speed -- 320 kph, or 200 mph.

European airlines beware: Eurostar, the high-speed train company connecting London with Brussels and Paris, has just upped its game.
The company recently unveiled its new e320 train at London's St. Pancras Station. The new train will go into commercial service at the end of 2015. The e320 is named for its max speed -- 320 kilometers per hour (200 mph).
"Over the last twenty years, we have led the way in cross-Channel high speed rail travel, cementing the link between the UK and mainland Europe," said Nicolas Petrovic, chief executive of Eurostar, in a statement to the press.
While airplane passengers increasingly have to endure shrinking legroom, the new Eurostar trains have been built to be roomy. The ergonomically-designed reclining seats are wider, and each comes with its own USB socket and touch sensitive light controls.
"The combination of bold design, chic interiors and wi-fi connectivity will raise the bar, providing an unprecedented level of style and comfort for our customers," added Petrovic.
Other on-board perks include a 20% increase in capacity per train (seven trains will join the fleet next year), free wi-fi, and increased luggage areas. The design comes courtesy of Pininfarina, the Italian design studio that has worked with the likes of Ferrari and Maserati.
The new design was unveiled to coincide with Eurostar's 20-year anniversary. During that time, the company has served over 150 million customers, though Petrovic believes that's just the tip of the iceberg. Next year, Eurostar also plans to expand its network to include direct service to Provence, with stops in Lyon, Avignon and Marseille, followed by the launch of a direct route to Amsterdam in 2016.

New Luxury Rail Itinerary Travels To Iran

201409-hd-golden-eagle-danube-express-exteriorjpg
A new luxury train itinerary has us dreaming of the Orient Express. "Jewels of Persia," on Golden Eagle’s Danube Express, will run from Budapest to Tehran, beginning in October.
And while Orient Express trains could transport passengers from London to Baghdad in eight days, the Danube Express will take its time, covering a far shorter route in almost double the time.
201409-hd-golden-eagle-danube-express-heritage-compartmentjpg
For fifteen days, passengers will traverse Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, Turkey, and, finally, Iran, ending in Tehran after a southern loop to the famed southern city of Shiraz. Along the way, they'll visit four UNESCO World Heritage sites, including Transylvania's Sighișoara and the ruins of Persepolis in Iran.
The twelve-car train has two dining cars and a bar car, and passenger cars have ensuite sleeper cabins with dark wood paneling, convertible beds, and, of course, huge windows.
201409-hd-golden-eagle-danube-express-restaurant-carjpg
Not one for the faint of heart—the US has a travel warning to Iran—or of wallet, the Jewels of Persia starts at around $15,000 per person. Included in the rates are all meals (with beverages at lunch and dinner), excursions, hotel stays (there are two nights in Istanbul’s Pera Palace), and gratuities.
For more information, visit Golden Eagle’s website.

Latin America’s Most Unforgettable Train Rides

There is something about the antiquated things of yesterday that provokes a nostalgic endearment beckoning one to defy the laws of physics in an attempt to understand the past. Nothing encourages this feeling like embarking on a classic train adventure where the tracks guide you through a land that otherwise remains untouched.
The train networks of Latin America are more than a thing of the past. Train travel is alive and flourishing throughout the continent, revealing hidden secrets through every tunnel and over every bridge. While there are hundreds of trains worth riding, here is a short list of some of the most unforgettable train adventures in Latin America.
Belmond Hiram Bingham- Cusco to Agua Calientes, Peru
Peru is known for some of the most impressive train rides in the world, especially the rides to Machu Picchu from Cusco in the heart of the Andes Mountains. PeruRail operates the luxurious Belmond Hiram Bingham train that provides exclusive service from Cusco to Agua Calientes, the gateway to Machu Picchu. Publicly acclaimed as one of the seven best trains in the world by Conde Nast Traveler Magazine, the Belmond Hiram Bingham train is the most luxurious way to travel to the sacred citadel of the Inca heartland. Distinguished by its blue and gold colored exterior, this train is equipped with four elegantly decorated passenger cars, two restaurant cars, a bar and scenic observation car, and an exclusive kitchen car. When you buy a round trip ticket for the Hiram Bingham train, services include brunch and exquisite music aboard the train, a tour guide per fourteen passengers, entrance and transportation to Machu Picchu, tea time at the classy Belmond Sanctuary Lodge above Machu Picchu, and a gourmet dinner on the return trip.
Belmond Hiram Bingham Train - Peru
Tren Crucero – Quito to Guayaquil, Ecuador
One of the newest additions to the Ecuadorian train network, Tren Crucero launched its first trip in July of 2013, providing round trip luxury service from Quito to Guayaquil to connect the Andes highlands to the coast. Covering a distance of nearly 450 km over four days and three nights, this journey weaves through the Andes Mountains of Ecuador descending from a staggering 3,600 meters above sea level, along the way offering spectacular views of some of Ecuador’s most beautiful natural attractions, such as la Avenida de los Volcanoes, la Nariz del Diablo, and el Bosque Nublado.
Tren Crucero - Ecuador
Tren a las Nubes –  Salta to Puna, Argentina
El Tren a las Nubes, or the Train to the Clouds, undoubtedly lives up to its name. Originally built to connect northwestern Argentina to the borax mines on the border of Chile, the Tren a las Nubes snakes through the scenic Argentine landscape over 13 viaducts, 29 bridges, through 21 tunnels, up 2 spirals and switchbacks climbing nearly 3,000 meters. The sixth highest train network in the world at 4,220 meters above sea level (fourth highest in Latin America), Tren a las Nubes has comfortable seating and air conditioning, with each car having a personal attendant. In addition to the bar and restaurant car, there is also a special medical car equipped with additional oxygen for passengers who might be feeling the effects of the increased in altitude.
Tren a las Nubes - Argentina
While it is not the most speedy mode of transportation, moving about 35 km/hour to cover a round trip distance of 434 km in about 15 hours, it is arguably one of the most spectacular train rides in the world. The journey begins in Salta in northeastern Argentina and ends after crossing La Polvorilla, the highest viaduct on the route measuring roughly 60 meters high.
Great Brazil Express – Curitiba to Cascavel, Brazil
All aboard Brazil’s first luxury train! About 6 years ago, the Brazilian train company Paraná Serra Verde Express was inspired to offer a luxury train service to the likes of the famous Orient Express which became known as the Great Brazil Express. This exclusive train service only accommodates 22 passengers each trip, tailing two tastefully decorated cars with goose down-filled sofa cushions, silk curtains, and reproductions of Rugendas and Debret paintings depicting colloquial life in 19th century Brazil. The nearly 480 km trip from Curitiba to Cascavel is actually a leg of an all-inclusive plane, bus, and train tour from Rio de Janeiro to Foz de Iguassu, seeing a total of 12 cities and their attractions. But if you are just looking for a short getaway to admire Brazil’s landscapes in style, the luxury train operates from Curitiba to Morretes on the weekends, as part of an upgrade option with the Curitiba-Paranagua train ride.
Great Brazilian Express - Brazil
La Trochita – Esquel to Ingeniero Jacobacci, Argentina
A collection of 1922 narrow gauge steam locomotives operating over 402 km of the Argentine Patagonia, the La Trochita begins its journey in Esquel and passes through El Maiten and Ingeniero Jacobacci. Originally part of the Ferrocarriles Patagonicos running through southern Argentina in the early 20th century, La Trochita was declared a national monument by the Government of Argentina in 1998. This train serves as a timeless reminder of nostalgia as it operates its nearly century old route across the Patagonian countryside.
