Exploration of the Misool, Wayag, and Gam Islands, part of Raja Ampat ("Four Kings") of Indonesia, characterized by limestone rock formations called karsts that rise from the sea, and some of the most bio-diverse tropical waters on the planet.
Complimentary expedition experiences include Zodiac cruising, scuba diving, snorkeling, and nature walks and hikes. Optional kayaking and submersible excursions will be available.
The Kimberley - Seabourn Pursuit will offer six 10-day voyages in the Kimberley region between Broome and Darwin in June, July and August 2024. Season highlights include:
Visits to incredibly remote settings such as the Bungle Bungles, El Questro National Park, and the Ord River
Exploration of King George Falls, dual waterfalls and the highest in Western Australia, and miles-long Zodiac rides through rivers and sandstone gorges crowded with incredible geological formations
Talbot Bay, offering once-in-a-lifetime viewing of the Horizontal Waterfalls, while incredible "boab" trees will provide backdrops for photography and local stories.
Helicopter viewing of the Hunter River and the Kimberley en route to the triple falls of Mitchell Plateau.
Seabourn Pursuit entered service on August 12, 2023, and offers the same ultra-luxury small ship experience that travelers have come to expect from Seabourn, enhanced by world-class equipment that allows the line to explore the furthest corners of the world. Like its sister ship, Seabourn Venture, the ship is designed and built for diverse environments to PC6 Polar Class standards and will include a plethora of modern hardware and technology that will extend the ships global deployment and capabilities. Seabourn Pursuit has close to 30,000 square feet of deck space and special touches at every turn. Those include indoor and outdoor guest areas with nearly 270-degree views, and a 4K GSS Cineflex Camera mounted on the mast of the Constellation Lounge capable of broadcasting imagery from miles ahead on monitors located throughout the ship.

Luxury Comes To Expedition Cruising
![]() |
| Ponant introduced the expedition ship Le Champlain (shown here in Norway) earlier this year. It is one of the first expedition vessels to offer a range of luxurious amenities.CreditCreditPonant |
New small ships built for adventure are also offering a full range of amenities, from saunas and fine dining to solariums and luxury suites.
By Elaine Glusac
When it launches in spring 2020, the 126-passenger National Geographic Endurance from Lindblad Expeditions will have amenities on par with a luxury vessel, including two restaurants, a glass-walled yoga studio, an infinity Jacuzzi facing the stern and two saunas with panoramic windows so heat-bathers won’t miss the passing scenery. Such features aren’t uncommon on larger ships, but they may be the first to sail in northeast Greenland and along the Northeast Passage from Norway across Russia.
Generally associated with small ships bound for remote locales, expedition cruising has historically focused on the destination rather than the conveyance. Ships were strictly base camps for Zodiac trips to view the icebergs of Antarctica or hike game trails in remote Alaska.
Now the vessels themselves are getting an upgrade from Lindblad and several other lines, freeing passengers from choosing between adventure and comfort.
“The ship was just a place to lay your head at night, but there is a real growing segment that wants more,” said Colleen McDaniel, the senior executive editor of Cruise Critic, the online review site. “They want hard-charging experiences in port and onboard they want some luxury and space. That’s a niche that a lot of cruise lines are trying to fill.”
Small ships, big growth
With small ships bound for offbeat destinations, expedition cruises account for a small sector of the cruise industry. In 2018, Cruise Industry News put it at about one percent of the global market, but found that 28 ships have been — or will be — launching between this year and 2022, suggesting this style of cruising is catching on.
“Expedition travel is growing in leaps and bounds for a few reasons,” said Susan Boehnstedt, the president of Critics Choice Vacations, part of the Virtuoso network of travel agencies, based in Queen Creek, Ariz. “One, is that the typical ocean liner cruise client has traveled this way for years,” she said, referring to big-ship ocean cruising. Then luxury river cruising gained in popularity, and now, “they are looking for something a bit smaller and up close and personal.”
Crystal Experience, which includes the ocean liner Crystal Cruises and Crystal River Cruises, will add its first polar ship, the 200-passenger Endeavor, to its Crystal Yacht Expedition Cruises collection in August 2020.
While visiting Antarctica, the ship is designed to keep guests toasty, from heated storage in the cabins meant to dry wet parkas quickly to a two-story solarium with a swimming pool and hot tub. Among amenities, there will be six restaurants, including one from the celebrated chef Nobu Matsuhisa, a pair of helicopters for excursions, and a three-person submersible. Its 17-day inaugural journey from Japan to Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula starts at $24,949 a person.

Underwater lounges and submarines
“There are people who just want the basics, but there’s a whole group of people who might not have gone to those places until the luxury is there,” said Marcella Rappoport, a cruise specialist at Ovation Travel in New York.
For fine food and lavish suites, she recommends the French line Ponant, which is leading the expansion race, launching two 184-passenger ships in 2019, two more in 2020 and a 135-cabin ship in 2021. Its newest vessels, Le Laperouse, which made its debut in June, and Le Champlain, an October newcomer, each have a Blue Eye lounge, with oblong portholes, low underwater lighting and hydrophones that transmit the natural sounds at sea. Sofas vibrate in time with the acoustics (upcoming 13-day trips in the Amazon region start at about $8,200 a person).
Demand for expedition cruising is attracting both new lines, including Norwegian Yacht Voyages, which is expected to unveil a 222-guest ship in 2022, and line expansions, such as two new 264-passenger polar-class ships from Seabourn, each carrying submarines as well as kayaks, expected in 2021 and 2022. Silversea plans to introduce its 100-passenger Silver Origin in the Galápagos in 2020.
Known for its river ships, Scenic Luxury Cruises & Tours plans to send out its first ocean ship, the 228-passenger Scenic Eclipse, in early 2019, visiting places like Panama and Colombia (10 days from $9,295) and Alaska (13 days from $6,645), and carrying a six-passenger submarine and two helicopters.
Offbeat adventure and culture
Smaller ships make it possible to pull into smaller or shallower ports, such as the French Iles des Saintes in the Caribbean, and many expedition ships, such as the new Lindblad ship, are built to navigate polar ice.
Not all expedition cruises visit extreme destinations. Sometimes they go culturally deeper. Since 2010 the luxury tour operator Abercrombie & Kenthas been chartering Ponant ships to offer expedition cruises in places such as Japan and Antarctica by reserving entire ships and bringing in its own experts and guides.
In 2018, the company began expedition cruises in Greece, and in 2019 it will add Italy, following the coast from Livorno on the Mediterranean south around the boot and back up to Venice (13-day trips from $11,995 a person), as well as the remote Kimberley region of Australia (13-days from $15,495 a person).
“These new expedition cruises will attract a more adventurous person who may not be looking for a cruise but now sees this as an easy way to get to outer islands or parts of Japan without flying around a lot,” Ms. Rappoport said.

Carnival To Launch First Of Three New Cruise Ships In 2017
Carnival Corporation & plc recently launched the Seabourn Encore, the first of three new ships that will enter service in 2017 across three of its 10 global cruise brands. Carnival Corporation will also launch Majestic Princess from Princess Cruises in April, which will be the world’s first cruise ship built specifically for the Chinese market, and its Germany-based AIDA Cruises brand in July will launch AIDAperla, one of the world’s most environmentally friendly and technologically advanced ships.
Following the launch of Seabourn Encore, the upcoming 2017 additions of Majestic Princess and AIDAperla are part of the 17 ships scheduled for delivery for Carnival Corporation and its brands through 2022, creating measured capacity growth over time that enables the company’s global fleet to meet accelerating demand for cruise vacations in every region of the world.
“On the heels of launching three new ships in 2016, it is exciting to have three more new ships join our fleet in 2017 as we re-invest on multiple fronts to continue raising the bar in providing our guests with a great vacation experience at an exceptional value,” said Roger Frizzell, chief communications officer for Carnival Corporation.
Added Frizzell: “Introducing new ships is part of our long-term strategy to build state-of-the-art vessels that are highly efficient to operate while creating excitement and demand among consumers. Of course, as stunning and beautiful as our new and existing ships are, what matters even more is the passionate focus of our 120,000 employees on providing our guests with extraordinary experiences to over 700 ports around the world that land-based vacations simply cannot match. All in all, it is rewarding to see more and more consumers recognizing that cruising is the world’s best vacation and vacation value.”
The three new ships scheduled to join Carnival Corporation’s fleet include:

Seabourn Encore, the fourth all-suite ship in Seabourn’s fleet, was launched Jan. 7 at a festive evening ceremony pier side at Marina Bay Cruise Center in Singapore, a key Asian shipping hub and popular homeport in southeast Asia for Carnival Corporation cruise ships. The launch featured international recording artist and world’s best-selling soprano Sarah Brightman presiding over the naming ceremony as godmother of the new 600-guest ship.
The vessel was designed by hospitality design icon Adam D. Tihany and features contemporary interiors and modern design elements and innovations consistent with the line’s reputation for understated elegance. Tihany is also designing a second ship, Seabourn Ovation, which is currently under construction and scheduled to launch in spring 2018.
Seabourn Encore will expand and build on the line’s award-winning Odyssey-class ships, which revolutionized ultra-luxury cruising with enhanced accommodations and innovative amenities when they were introduced between 2009 and 2011. The 40,350-gross ton ship is configured with one additional deck, expanded public areas and a private veranda for every suite.
Seabourn Encore will maintain the line’s high ratio of space per guest, enabling highly personalized service by its exceptional crew.
The new vessel continues Seabourn’s reputation as the world’s finest ultra-luxury cruise line. Seabourn has been named the “World’s Best Small-Ship Cruise Line” by readers of both Travel + Leisure and Condé Nast Traveler magazines. Cruise Critic named Seabourn “Best for Luxury,” and numerous other publications have recognized the brand for its luxurious accommodations, extraordinary level of service, exceptional dining and unrivaled spa facilities.

Majestic Princess will be the only cruise ship that offers two specialty dinner menus designed by Michelin star chefs at sea in China.
One offering is Harmony, created in partnership with Richard Chen, former chef of Wing Lei – the first Chinese restaurant in North America awarded a Michelin star. Harmony will feature haute Chinese cuisine paired with pristine ocean views and modern décor, serving Chen’s interpretation of classic Cantonese dishes. The second Michelin star dining experience will be “La Mer – A French Bistro” from three-Michelin star chef Emmanuel Renaut.
The ship will also offer Princess’ signature Movies Under the Stars, with the largest outdoor screen at sea, and the exciting Princess Water Color Fantasy fountain and light show.
Guests will also experience the signature SeaWalk, the industry’s first glass-floor walkway at sea, and SeaView Bar featuring “flair” bartending with the best views at sea.
The Piazza Atrium, the central focal point of the ship, features live entertainment throughout the day and evening. It is a grand spectacle surrounded by The Shops of Princess, nearly 1,100 square meters of luxury boutiques, which include designer brand shops from Cartier, Bvlgari and Chopard and leather goods from Burberry and Gucci, to name a few.
Accommodations will be configured to appeal to families and multigenerational travelers, and all outside staterooms will have private balconies.
AIDA Cruises: AIDAperla – Official launch date of July 2017
AIDAperla is the 12th and second of a new-generation vessel in the fleet for AIDA Cruises, the most recognized cruise brand in Germany and one of the country’s fastest-growing and most successful tourism businesses that has pioneered the “green cruising” concept. At 124,500 tons with 1,643 cabins, AIDAperla will be among the world’s most technologically advanced and environmentally friendly cruise ships.
AIDAperla will – like its sister ship AIDAprima — feature the revolutionary hull design that significantly enhances energy efficiency. It will also use the Mitsubishi Air Lubrication System (MALS), which was a first in the cruise industry on AIDAprima. This modern technology enables the ships to glide on a cushion of air, further reducing fuel consumption.
The ship will also feature AIDA’s Spray Bar, an exclusive, all-white champagne lounge, which is spread across two decks and operated via partnership with Moët & Chandon.

Music Legends Crosby, Stills & Nash Announced As Headline Act Aboard Queen Mary 2 On Transatlantic Crossing 4 September 2015
Cunard is proud to announce that
Crosby, Stills & Nash will perform a series of exclusive concerts on board the company's
Flagship, Queen Mary 2, during her 4-11 September Transatlantic Crossing.
The Grammy® Award winning trio, who first performed together at the now legendary Woodstock
Festival over four decades ago, will perform three exclusive concerts for passengers on board
Queen Mary 2 during the seven-night Transatlantic Crossing from New York to Southampton.
"We are excited to welcome Crosby, Stills & Nash onboard Queen Mary 2 during Cunard's 175th
anniversary year. Having these music legends perform will be nothing less than thrilling for our
passengers," said Richard Meadows, president of Cunard Line North America. "The band's presence
onboard demonstrates Cunard's continued commitment to providing unique access to some of the world's
most legendary artists, resulting in a truly unforgettable ocean travel experience for our guests."
Crosby, Stills & Nash (CS&N) burst onto the music scene in 1969 with their self-titled debut LP, now one
of Rolling Stone's "500 Greatest Albums of All Time." The band members are among the few to have
been inducted twice into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, once with Crosby, Stills & Nash, and a second
time with The Byrds, Buffalo Springfield and the Hollies. They have also been inducted into the
Songwriter's Hall of fame, with the honour recognizing both CS&N as a group and each member
as individual solo artists.
During the Queen Mary 2 Crossing from New York (M519A), the trio will perform some of their
greatest hits including "Teach Your Children," "Southern Cross" and "Wooden Ships" in the Royal
Court Theatre. They will also participate in a Q&A session and special autograph opportunity for
passengers on board.
"This will be a unique experience for us," said Graham Nash. "We're really looking forward to making
music, bringing back memories and creating new ones—and this journey from New York to Southampton,
on this beautiful vessel, will do just that."
