Port Canaveral Breaks Ground On $95 Million Cruise Terminal 10 Expansion

Port Canaveral has officially launched a $95 million expansion and renovation project for Cruise Terminal 10. Designed to accommodate the cruise industry's largest mega-ships, the overhaul will expand the facility to over 145,000 square feet—nearly 30% larger than its current layout.

Scheduled for completion in November 2027, the upgraded facility will comfortably handle ships carrying up to 6,700 passengers per sailing.

1. Modernized Design & Natural Light

Designed by Miami-based architectural firm Bermello Ajamil, the reimagined terminal will feature a striking glass façade to bring in natural light, vibrant local artwork, and streamlined interior architecture. The goal is to deliver a warm, visually striking atmosphere from the moment guests step inside.

2. Seamless Check-In & Luggage Handling

To keep guest movement efficient during peak embarkation windows, the project significantly expands key operational zones:

  • Expanded Security Screening: Larger screening areas to reduce wait times during peak boarding hours.
  • Enhanced Luggage Laydown: Expanded luggage processing areas to expedite bag transfers.
  • Improved Vertical Transportation: New high-capacity escalators and elevators to move passengers smoothly between levels.

3. Infrastructure & Structural Upgrades

Led by Orlando-based contractor PCL Construction Services, construction includes critical underground and structural work:

  • Replacement of waterside and landside trench drains to reinforce ground integrity.
  • Installation of modern HVAC systems and clear, upgraded digital signage.

4. Part of the $1 Billion "Port Canaveral Advantage"

This $95 million investment is part of the broader Port Canaveral Advantage capital improvement initiative, a nearly $1 billion program modernizing infrastructure across the port. Other active projects include the expansion of Cruise Terminal 5 and a new 13-story parking garage at Cruise Terminal 6.

The Big Picture: Port Canaveral currently serves seven major cruise lines operating over 1,000 sailings annually from 18 homeported vessels. The Terminal 10 transformation will ensure the port is fully equipped to host next-generation mega-ships, including the upcoming MSC World Atlantic debuting in 2027.

Experts Race To Write Guidance To Contain First Ship-Borne Hantavirus Outbreak

As the cruise ship hit by a hantavirus outbreak sails towards Tenerife, World Health Organization officials are racing to draw up step-by-step guidance for what should happen ‌next for the nearly 150 passengers when they finally reach land on Sunday.
MV Hondius, a Netherlands-registered specialist cruise vessel

The hantavirus outbreak – which has killed three people among at least eight suspected or confirmed infections - is the first ever recorded on a cruise ship, so some new protocols are needed.

Half a dozen current and former WHO officials and hantavirus experts said the outbreak could be managed by adapting standard public health steps, like isolating sick passengers or those who may have been in contact with them. None of the passengers on the ship now have symptoms, the ship's operator has said.

TIPS FROM ARGENTINA

Officials are also seeking tips from Argentina, where a previous outbreak of the Andes virus, the same strain as on the ship, was snuffed out in 2019. “If we follow public health measures and the lessons we learned from Argentina ... we can break this chain of transmission. This doesn't need to be a large epidemic,” Abdi Rahman Mahamud, director of the WHO's alert and response coordination department, said.

He said the focus was on isolation for sick people, and monitoring and quarantining for other passengers, subject to national government decisions.

The WHO may also recommend that some people with links to the outbreak take their temperature daily for at least 42 days as the Andes strain has a long incubation period, Anais Legand, WHO technical officer for viral threats, said at an online briefing on Friday.

National authorities may also be asked to set up regular contact with those people, and give them a phone number to call if they feel at all unwell, she added.

Passengers are being split into high-risk and low-risk contacts ‌based on their interactions with sick travellers, the WHO said. Contact-tracing is also key for any who have left the ship already.

The Andes hantavirus is known to spread through close and prolonged contact, and chiefly when a patient is already symptomatic. That information is based largely on the one outbreak where the Andes virus spread between people in Argentina in 2018-19, in which 34 people were infected and 11 died.

“We essentially learned that once you implement basic measures of social distancing, that are essentially very simple – stay home when you are not feeling well – that diminished the circulation and the outbreak burned out,” said Gustavo Palacios, a professor at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, in the United States, who is originally from Argentina and a co-author of a key paper on that outbreak.

He and others have been advising WHO on the outbreak since May 2, he said, adding he hoped more attention would now be paid to the risks of hantaviruses, which can have fatality rates of up to 50%.

SOME PLANS IN PLACE

Some governments are already making plans: the UK government said on Friday morning it would repatriate its citizens on a flight under strict infection-control measures, and then passengers would be asked to isolate for 45 days, with testing as required.

Krutika Kuppalli, associate professor of medicine at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in the U.S., who formerly worked on mpox protocols at the WHO, said measures could be taken from previous outbreaks.

“It’s the same principle as for measles, or Ebola. Contact tracing doesn’t change,” she said.

The WHO said late on Thursday it was still finalizing guidelines.

To enhance the commemorative journey, the Stars and Stripes cruise also will call at cities that played an important role in U.S. history, including Norfolk, Virginia, and New York for an overnight visit.

Holland America Line Through the Years

Holland America has played a part in American history since it was founded in 1873 as an option for European immigrants to find a new life in the United States:

·From the 1880s to 1920s, Holland America carried more than 10% of all steerage passengers to the United States, setting new standards for service in the process.

·During both World Wars, the cruise line’s ships were converted for military service, carrying Allied and U.S. troops around the world.

·In the 1920s, Holland America became one of the first cruise lines to offer U.S.-based vacation cruises to the Caribbean, an experience that has grown and remains popular today.

·A pioneer in touring Alaska, Holland America has been exploring the Great Land’s glaciers and wildlife for nearly 80 years, longer than any other cruise line.

Military Appreciation Offer

In honor of those who served in the U.S. military, Holland America Line extends a “Military Appreciation Offer” to active, retired and veteran military personnel. Guests can apply for a $100 onboard credit on the Holland America Line website.

The Port of Philadelphia Announces Groundbreaking of New PhilaPort Cruise Terminal

PhilaPort has announced the start of construction of the future PhilaPort Cruise Terminal, a 16-acre site adjacent to Philadelphia International Airport that will serve as the region’s newest gateway for cruise travel beginning in April 2026.

The terminal’s inaugural season will begin during a historic year. As the United States celebrates its 250th anniversary in 2026, Philadelphia will host a wide range of nationally significant events and tourism experiences. Launching Norwegian Cruise Line’s seasonal sailings to Bermuda and other destinations during this commemorative year will give travelers a new way to experience both the city’s deep maritime heritage and its vibrant modern culture.

“This is a unique opportunity, and we are fortunate to have two outstanding partners in Energy Transfer and Norwegian Cruise Line, both of whom see tremendous potential in Philadelphia,” said Jeff Theobald, PhilaPort Executive Director and CEO. “It took a lot of hard work to bring this agreement together, and Energy Transfer and Norwegian Cruise Line were committed every step of the way. We have a lot of hard work ahead of us, but we are ready and excited to welcome cruise passengers this spring.”

The new terminal is the result of coordinated efforts and partnership among PhilaPort, Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings, and Energy Transfer Marketing and Terminals (ETMT). PhilaPort and ETMT have finalized the agreement of sale of property for the site in Tinicum Township, formerly known as the Hog Island Dock Terminal Facility, clearing the way for its redevelopment. PhilaPort will manage all marine-side improvements, while NCLH will lead the land-side construction and development of the terminal. Under a seven-year berthing agreement running from April 15, 2026 through March 31, 2033, NCLH’s cruise brands will operate as Philadelphia’s exclusive homeport with an initial commitment of 41 sailings per year.

Cruise operations at the new terminal are projected to generate 2,185 direct and indirect jobs and approximately $300 million in annual economic output throughout the Commonwealth, supporting labor-intensive services that contribute to regional economic well-being.

“Philadelphia’s debut as our newest homeport marks a strategic milestone for Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings and our three award-winning brands, Norwegian Cruise Line, Oceania Cruises, and Regent Seven Seas Cruises,” said Daniel S. Farkas, Executive Vice President, General Counsel and Chief Development Officer at Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings. “Together with PhilaPort, we’re expanding access to exceptional cruise experiences, connecting guests to world-class destinations with the convenience of sailing from a city rich in American history. As we prepare to launch in 2026, this terminal represents the next wave in our commitment to innovation, regional growth, and delivering an unmatched guest experience from ship to shore.”

Additional information regarding construction schedules, project milestones, and terminal amenities will be shared as development progresses. PhilaPort will release further details to keep the public, cruise passengers, and the travel industry informed as the terminal takes shape.

“The PhilaPort Cruise Terminal will help fulfill a key commitment in our strategic plan, Destination 2040, to make PhilaPort a multi-faceted port rather than one focused solely on cargo. This facility reflects the broader vision for both the city and the port, opening the door to a new chapter of tourism and leisure in Philadelphia,” said Michael Pearson, Chairman of the PhilaPort Board of Directors.

The establishment of the PhilaPort Cruise Terminal underscores the authority’s commitment to driving regional economic development and creating new opportunities for travelers. As the city prepares for America’s 250th anniversary, anticipation is building for a cruising experience that highlights Philadelphia’s maritime past and future. With unique facilities, convenient airport access, and an exciting lineup of destinations, the PhilaPort Cruise Terminal is positioned to become one of the East Coast’s most convenient and compelling places to begin a voyage. Passengers can expect more updates soon, along with an unforgettable new way to Cruise Philly First in 2026.

Travelore Cruise News: Royal Caribbean Keeps Quiet While Norwegian Cruise Line Issues Warning Over New Hawaii Cruise Tax That Was Upheld In Court

Throughout the year, Royal Caribbean has made some noticeable adjustments to its itinerary. Among the recent changes was a reroute due to tension between two countries. Royal Caribbean offered little explanation after removing a visit between China and Japan on the Spectrum of the Seas.

There's another destination guests continue to question. Hawaii stirred things up with a new tax for cruisers earlier in the year. The increase has caused a stir and has now been upheld in court. Norwegian Cruise Line sent out an alert.

Here's the latest on the cruise tax and how the Cruise Lines International Association has reacted to the verdict.
The tax will be implemented on January 1, 2026.

Despite The Cruise Lines International Association Efforts, Hawaii's Cruise Tax Has Been Upheld In Court

Hawaii added cruise passengers to its Transient Accommodations Tax. The new fee has caused a stir since its inception. The funds will aid climate change, conservation and infrastructure. The fee is estimated to generate around $100 million annually.

The tax will raise the existing TAT from 10.25% to 11% statewide.

Despite efforts by the Cruise Lines International Association, which represents the likes of Royal Caribbean and Norwegian Cruise Line, a federal judge has ruled that the new tax will still be upheld.

The CLIA argued that the tax would hurt tourism, making it more expensive for cruisers.

The association argued, "Cruise tourism generates nearly $1 billion in total economic impact for Hawai‘i and supports thousands of local jobs, and we remain focused on ensuring that success continues on a lawful, sustainable foundation."

Despite the verdict, the plaintiffs plan to appeal. For now, some cruise lines have already started to warn passengers about the cruise tax change. Among them is Norwegian Cruise Line.

The company sent out an email to passengers about the future change.

Norwegian Cruise Line Has Warned Its Passengers About The Added Tax

Back in October, Norwegian Cruise Line was praised for alerting guests about the new Hawaii cruise tax set to go into effect on January 1, 2026.

Fares for Hawaii increase from $50-$500 higher with the additional tax. The added costs depend on the overall stay and cost of itineraries.

NCL reached out to guests about the change.

NCL added that it doesn't agree with the tax, and is working with the CLIA to review it legally.

“We believe that this expansion of the TAT is unconstitutional, and therefore in collaboration with the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA), we are actively engaged in a legal review. We remain committed to advocating for a fair and balanced outcome.”

Credit to NCL for being completely transparent about the tax and what it means for cruisers taking to Hawaii. As far as Royal Caribbean is concerned, a formal announcement hasn't been made just yet.

Royal Caribbean Hasn't Addressed The Tax Despite Future Sails To Hawaii

On its Hawaii cruises page, Royal Caribbean continues to promote sails.

Royal Caribbean says about the destination, "Just the word "Hawaii" conjures visions of turquoise waves lapping at colorful sands, a rich historical tapestry that's as Polynesian as it is American and a welcoming culture you can distill into a single word: Aloha. Once you arrive, trace the history of Pearl Harbor on Oahu, where you can tour battleships and see the memorial to that fateful day in 1941."

"Cruise to Hawaii and head to the Big Island to scale volcanoes like Mount Kilauea and chase waterfalls on the slopes of Mauna Kea. Or enjoy the sun and surf on the remote shores of Kauai and Maui. Discover the magic with a Hawaiian cruise."

Royal Caribbean has continued cruises to Hawaii on its Anthem of the Seas. The cruise line has various sails, including eight and twelve-night packages.

Royal Caribbean's 8-Night Hawaii Cruise In April 2027 Schedule:

Oahu (Honolulu), Hawaii

Kailua Kona, Hawaii

5 Days at Sea

Vancouver, British Columbia

The Anthem of the Seas is known for its sailings in Alaska and the Caribbean.

It remains to be seen if the new tax will keep Royal Caribbean cruisers away from the destination.

Lindblad Names Two New Ships And Launches ‘Explorers-In-Training’

It’s been a busy month for National Geographic–Lindblad Expeditions, which named its two new ships, National Geographic Gemini and National Geographic Delfina, in an elaborate christening ceremony in the Galápagos Islands on July 9, 2025, and launched its new “Explorers-in-Training” programming for kids and teens at the end of July.

Anchored in Academy Bay, the two new ships were joined by their sibling vessels, National Geographic Islander II and National Geographic Endeavour II. Onboard the Gemini, the crew were joined by several members of Lindblad Expeditions’ executive team, including CEO Natalya Leahy and Interim Chief Maritime Officer, Rear Admiral Keith Taylor, plus several local partners, community members and their families.

“Today, we celebrate not just an event, we’re celebrating a story that started in February 1967, when Lars-Eric Lindblad led the very first non-scientific expedition to the Galápagos Islands,” said Leahy. “Today’s naming is done in honor of the Galápagos community. We will continue our hard work right by your side and never forget that we are just visitors to your home.”

Two New Ships: Gemini and Delfina

Designed to hold just 48 guests in its 27 outward-facing staterooms, National Geographic Gemini strikes a perfect balance between small-ship and large-ship cruising, with plenty of activities, space to stretch out on the deck and enough peace to relax in the library or lounge. Ideal for intimate group sailings, National Geographic Delfina holds just 16 guests in its eight artfully designed guest rooms, all of which provide access to an outer deck or private balcony.

Both ships come equipped with a whirlpool hot tub to unwind in after a long day of sightseeing, and you can expect educational talks by onboard naturalists and an elegant dining experience featuring locally sourced food and wine. To cut down on food waste, passengers are encouraged to note their dinner preferences ahead of time, while coffee, tea, and tasty Ecuadorian snacks are available 24/7 in the lounge, just in case.

You can experience the Gemini on the 10-day Exploring Galápagos sailing (from $5,556 per person) or the Delfina during the 10-day Galápagos by Catamaran: An Intimate Voyage itinerary (from $7,900 per person). Both trips also offer a longer 16-day version that adds time in Peru and a trip to Machu Picchu.

New ‘Explorers-In-Training’ Programming for Kids

The cruise line also recently revamped its National Geographic Explorers-In-Training programming, which features hands-on activities geared toward younger guests aboard select sailings to Antarctica and Iceland, and all trips to the Galápagos Islands, Alaska, and Baja California. Originally created in 2017, the newly expanded program is meant to keep kids and teens inspired by science, curiosity and conservation as they encounter new landscapes, flora and fauna throughout the cruise.

Activities vary based on the itinerary and destination but generally include opportunities to learn to drive a zodiac, participate in educational games and scavenger hunts, conduct experiments and mark the unique creatures they’ve seen in region-specific field notebooks. At the end of the sailing, their accomplishments are celebrated during a shipboard presentation where they’ll receive a certificate and patch to remember their trip by. While these immersive experiences—led by some of National Geographic’s best photographers, naturalists, undersea specialists and certified field educators—are intended for children and teens, all ages are invited to participate.

What to Know Before You Go

Instead of following a set schedule, National Geographic–Lindblad Expeditions sailings are more fluid, with loose itineraries based on daily traffic within Galápagos National Park. You’ll be given a rough idea of the types of activities you’ll be doing ahead of time so you know what to pack, and once onboard, the details of the next day’s plans are shared during nightly presentations by expedition leaders. That way, everyone is prepared and with the Galápagos National Park Service directing ship traffic, the UNESCO World Heritage site doesn’t get too overwhelmed by visitors. This type of flexibility also gives ship captains the ability to veer slightly off schedule and turn the vessel around if, for instance, a blue whale is spotted and the team of onboard naturalists wants to turn the rare sighting into an educational moment.

Itineraries for the cruise line’s two new ships are packed with only-in-Galápagos experiences like visits to the Charles Darwin Research Station on Santa Cruz Island, epic hikes on lava fields, and scenic nature walks through endemic bird habitats. You’ll also have many, many chances to swim alongside Galápagos sea lions and penguins, view blue-footed boobies from a zodiac and see other rare creatures—like Galápagos marine iguanas—in the wild. Remember to pack a good pair of waterproof hiking sandals for wet landings, hiking boots for dry landings, reef-safe sunscreen, and your best camera or a new Go-Pro for underwater videos. Pack plenty of “Expedition Chic” attire like lightweight khaki pants and hiking shirts to avoid getting sunburned—you’ll be sailing along the equator, after all, and the sun is strong.

While the total cost of your Galápagos cruise aboard either of the two new ships doesn’t include international airfare, gratuities or spa services, it does cover all your meals and beverages, educational presentations by National Geographic photographers and naturalists, access to kayaks and stand-up paddle boards, shore excursions aboard zodiacs and use of snorkeling equipment (masks, fins, and shorty wetsuits—bring a full-body diving skin to wear under it if you’re wary of swimming in cooler waters). Cruise fares also include domestic flights to Baltra Island (GPS) from Guayaquil (GYE) or Quito (UIO), two nights’ accommodations in either city (one before your sailing and one after), port taxes, the Galápagos Islands National Park entrance fee ($200 per adult, $100 per child) and the Tourist Transit Card fee ($20 per person). Pre- and post-cruise extensions are also available if you want to spend more time exploring Ecuador.

All details and policies mentioned were accurate as of press time.

Designed with a neutral palette of dusty rose, taupe, and cream, combined with embellished trims and fringed pillows, the alcoves harken back to old-world detailing.

The reception area, also on deck 5, features pleated leather panels and a light fixture crafted from handblown glass and ceramic pearls. From the lifts, looking back towards Galileo’s Bar, walls are framed with paneling and artwork, creating a traditional yet modern aesthetic.

Galileo’s Bar

Named in a nod to Regent’s beloved Seven Seas Navigator® which will soon leave the fleet, Galileo’s Bar is strategically placed to serve both the Prestige Lounge and adjacent casino. The bar’s ceiling is a canvas displaying a contemporary masterpiece styled like an oil painting, framed by fretted metal detailing.

The base of the bar features fluted elements, and the bold, striped floor highlights the bar’s footprint, creating a focal point for the Starlight Atrium; it is the place for guests to indulge in complimentary premium beverages that come as standard with a Regent sailing.

From the bar, views of the spiral staircases extend back into the Starlight Atrium on both port and starboard sides. The walls, clad in a limestone texture, are adorned with sconces designed to resemble jewelry, adding a touch of glamour.

New Samana Bayport Cruise Ship Terminal Dominican Republic

With the presence of President Luis Abinader , the construction of the cruise port and tourist terminal began , with an investment of US$22 million, from the Temarsan Consortium, with Dominican capital.

The terminal is expected to begin operating in 18 months, and plans to receive more than 500 thousand passengers annually. Now about 50 thousand arrive.

Federico Schad reported that during construction 150 direct jobs and 500 indirect jobs will be generated. The operation will create 100 direct and thousands of indirect jobs throughout the province, due to the mobilization of hundreds of thousands of visitors throughout its territory and in the area around Samaná Bay .

He indicated that the average expense per passenger in Caribbean ports is US$98, and Samana Bayport will have the capacity to receive 10,000 passengers daily, so the daily economic impact of operating will be approximately one million dollars.

“These income would go directly to you, the guides, the owners of maritime transport, the taxi drivers, motorcycle conchos, tour operators, restaurants, artisans, gift shops and other businesses. In this way this project will improve the quality of life of many people,” he assured.

He stated that he sees “as a triumph for all of Samaná”, the Samana Bayport, a cruise port and maritime terminal that will transform the experience of visitors, because in addition its strategic position in the bay will offer the port and tourist facilities necessary to satisfy the needs operational, which now do not exist.

Samana Bayport Cruise Ship passenger Terminal Dominican Republic

He explained that the port will be able to handle 3 simultaneous cruises; one with a capacity of up to 5,000 passengers docked at the dock with state-of-the-art technology named “Seawalk”, and 2 cruise ships at the anchorage of the bay.

«The Norwegian Seawalk technology is a floating dock with the capacity to operate with cruise ships of up to 5 thousand passengers, which can be retracted, or stored, when not in use, which minimizes its environmental and visual impact, compared to traditional breakwaters. This innovative technology is already used in several ports in Europe, and will be used for the first time in the Dominican Republic at the Samana bayport,” he added.

He also said that “the terminal will have several docks, an information center for tourists, facilities and services specific to these operations, a recreation area, green areas, a transportation center (for dispatching excursions, taxis, land transportation and parking), offices.” government and first aid center.

Samana Bayport Cruise Ship passenger Terminal Dominican Republic

Schad expressed that the province of Samaná has unique natural riches, its bay is considered one of the most beautiful in the world, and it is located in a strategic place on cruise routes, because more than a million cruise ships pass off its coast annually. cruise passengers.

With these resources, he indicated, and with the cruise port, a journey begins to become one of the main cruise destinations in the Caribbean; and pointed out that the province has received important investments in road infrastructure, airport, hotels, marina, real estate projects, but now it will have a cruise port and tourist terminal that will significantly increase the capacity and number of ships it receives and improve the quality of the services offered to visitors.

The businessman explained that in the last 17 years Samaná received 700 ships and 1.5 million passengers, without adequate port facilities to maintain a high level of visitor satisfaction, and limited the type of cruises that we can receive in the bay. Now, in addition to its attractions in Samana, it will have appropriate facilities to receive more cruise passengers.

Federico Schad thanked President Luis Abinader for the presence and support offered to the project; Jean Luis Rodríguez , executive director of Apordom ; Alejandro Campos president of the Apordom Council; Nelson Núñez , mayor of Santa Bárbara; the board of directors of the Samaná Tourism Cluster and the community.

Also to the cruise line executives present; Roy Milan Schultheis of Norwegian ; Wendy McDonald, Melissa Morales and Jaime Castillo of Royal Caribbean .

Travelore Tips: Another Cruise Line Is Raising Its Daily Gratuity Rate

Passengers will be charged the increased rate beginning Feb. 1.
The Islander has multiple pools. Image source: Margaritaville at Sea.

On most cruises, passengers can expect to be charged for gratuities—tips that are distributed to certain crew members like stateroom attendants and dining room servers.

Although gratuities are customary across the industry to recognize the crew members who work hard to ensure you enjoy your vacation, these added service fees often take first-time cruisers by surprise. The charges applied to some stateroom categories can be as much as $25 per passenger per day on some cruise lines, but most daily gratuity rates run between $16 and $20 per passenger.

It’s no surprise though that just as cruise lines are raising prices, they’re increasing gratuity rates too. When asked, most cruise lines say their rate adjustments are made in line with industry standards.

In November, Royal Caribbean cited industry standards as it raised its daily gratuity amount from $18 per passenger to $18.50 per passenger for most stateroom categories. More recently, Disney Cruise Line followed suit, increasing its recommended gratuity rate from $14.50 per passenger per night to $16 per passenger per night for non-concierge staterooms.

Now, another cruise line is making an adjustment to its suggested rate too. And this one is increasing its automatic gratuity charge to an amount that’s higher than either of those cruise line’s rates.

Margaritaville at Sea bumps up daily gratuity rate

Jimmy Buffett’s cruise line Margaritaville at Sea, which currently sails two cruise ships from Florida ports, is the latest cruise line to raise its gratuities. The change puts Margaritaville at Sea’s rate on par with Norwegian Cruise Line’s onboard service charge, which is higher than most mainstream cruise lines’ gratuity fees.

On its website, Margaritaville at Sea states that as of Feb. 1, gratuities of $20 per person, per night for staterooms and $24.00 per person, per night for suites will be automatically added to passengers’ stateroom accounts during their cruises. This is an increase of $2 over the cruise lines previous gratuity rates of $18 for staterooms and $22 for suites.

As of Feb. 1, Margaritaville at Sea is also raising its onboard service gratuity from 18% to 20% gratuity for all bar, drink packages, specialty dining, spa and salon tabs.

Although no one wants to pay more for their cruise, most passengers won’t notice a sizeable increase in their final cruise bill.

At the new $20 per-passenger daily gratuity rate, two passengers sailing in an inside stateroom will pay $200 in gratuities on a five-night Margaritaville at Sea cruise rather than $180 at the previous rate, an increase of $20.

You can modify cruise gratuities, if you wish

Cruise gratuity rates are suggested amounts and you are free to modify them at your discretion. Keep in mind though that those gratuities are an essential part of the compensation package for the hardworking crew members who help make your vacation special.

The majority of passengers choose to accept the cruise line’s recommended daily rate and some even reward crew members for exceptional service by providing additional tips.

For your convenience, most cruise lines will offer you the option to pre-pay gratuities at the recommended rate when booking your cruise. Many passengers like to do this so they know up front how much they’re spending on their cruise. If you pre-pay gratuities and avoid making additional purchases on board your cruise, you could potentially enjoy your vacation without spending another dime.

If you’ve already pre-paid gratuities for an upcoming cruise before a rate increase happens, you’re usually locked in at the previous, lower gratuity rate. If you’d like, you can increase your gratuities by visiting the guest services desk once on board your cruise.

French Mayor Calls For Cruise Ship Ban With Capacity Of Over 900 Passengers On French Riviera

Protestors from the group Stop Croisieres blocking MSC's mega cruise ship in 2023 (Stop Croisiers)

The mayor of Nice, France, a popular tourist destination along the French Mayor Calls for Cruise Ship Ban on French Riviera, joined the growing number of destinations calling for restrictions on cruise ships. He cited the now familiar complaints of overtourism and pollution while proposing a ban starting this summer to stop large cruise ships from anchoring in the picturesque bay between Nice and Villefranche long known as a destination for the rich and famous.

“Tourism yes, overtourism no,” Mayor Christian Estrosi said during his annual New Year’s address outlining the political goals for the coming year. Estrosi is also president of the Nice Côte d'Azur Metropolis but would require the support of other local mayors to enact his bans which focused on large cruise ships as well as house sharing through the popular site Airbnb.

“The cruises that pollute and dump their ‘low-cost clientele’ who consume nothing, but leave their waste behind have no place with us,” Estrosi declared. Already known for his criticism of the cruise industry, the mayor simply said “Nice no longer wants ‘low-cost cruises,” to stop in its port.

Speaking on a local radio program, the mayor reiterated his position saying efforts were underway to “cancel all cruises that can still be canceled ahead of drafting a banning order.” He called for a ban effective July 1 but clarified his position was specifically to stop cruise ships with a capacity of over 900 passengers or over 190 meters (690 feet) in length.

The proposed ban targets the contemporary segment of the industry with large ships carrying 4,000 or more passengers while seeking to maintain the business of the small, ultra-luxury cruise ships which are more in keeping with the image Nice seeks to project. Estrosi contends the size restriction would eliminate about 70 percent of the cruise ship passengers scheduled to land in Nice.

Estrosi declared “I don’t want these floating hotels putting down their anchors in Nice.” A spokesperson for the trade group Cruise Lines International Association however responded with surprise noting “No large cruise ships are scheduled to call at the Port of Nice in 2025.”

While a popular destination, Nice and Villefranche without docking facilities have already seen a decline in the number of cruise ship calls as the ships must tender passengers ashore. Estimates are the port had about 650,000 cruise passengers and approximately 100 cruise ship visits down from 200 or more a decade ago. French media reports indicate there are a total of 125 cruise ship calls scheduled for Nice in 2025.

Estrosi is not calling for cruise ships to stop visiting the French Mayor Calls for Cruise Ship Ban on French Riviera, but just his little part of the coast. He suggested the ships could proceed to Cannes, which already has more than two times the number of annual cruise ship calls. The large commercial port at Marseille would also be a possibility but it is about a two-hour driving distance to the west from Cannes, Nice, and Villefranche.

Local officials were quick to point out that even if Estrosi could build support for his ban, he lacks the authority to change many cruise ship visits. Local authority only extends 300 meters from the shore (less than 1,000 feet) and many of the large cruise ships anchor further out putting them in waters controlled by the federal authorities.

It is not the first attempt to limit cruise ships along France’s Mediterranean coast. The group Stop Croisières, which calls itself environmentalists, has been staging protests. The group used Greenpeace tactics taking to small boats to block the arrival of cruise ships.

Advocates point to the impact on Venice, Italy after the city was forced into banning large cruise ships while other destinations such as Key West, Florida also moved to block large ships. Bar Harbor, Maine continues to be locked in a debate and legal actions after imposing a ban on most cruise ships while other destinations such as Juneau, Alaska reached a voluntary agreement with the cruise industry. European cities ranging from Amsterdam to Barcelona have also proposed moving cruise ship docks out of the center of the city.

Demolition Commences At St. Lucia Caribbean Cruise Port

An exciting port development project has officially begun with a bang in St. Lucia. Overnight from Saturday, December 21 to the morning of Sunday, December 22, the Customs and Excise Department Building of Port Castries was demolished to make way for cruise port redevelopment and expansion.

This is an essential first step to clear space for new facilities that will offer state-of-the-art upgrades as well as expanded space to accommodate larger ships. With the port redevelopment, visiting cruise guests will also enjoy more diverse tours and integrated features that will support the local economy.

The overnight demolition was chosen as a way to ensure public safety with minimal community disruption through street closures, equipment movements, and other considerations. The building was located on Jeremie Street, on the south side of the harbor near the popular Castries Market.

“This is the first step in fulfilling our commitment to the people of Saint Lucia to transform and modernize the cruise industry,” said Lancelot Arnold, General Manager of Saint Lucia Cruise Port.

“Our goal is to deliver a world-class experience, starting with infrastructure that supports our vision of growth and excellence.”

In late 2022, St. Lucia signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Global Ports Holding plc for port redevelopment. Global Ports Holding officially assumed operation of Port Castries on April 30, 2024 with a 30-year concession contract.

Ultimately, the goal is for the port to be able to handle Oasis-class ships and other large vessels, which would bring dramatic new economic impacts to the island.

In addition to improvements of the docks, adjacent retail spaces and other tourism-focused facilities would be upgraded and redeveloped.

This would help drive more passenger spending and increase the appeal of the island as a top destination. An official timeline for the complete project has not yet been released.

The goal is for cruise passenger volume to St. Lucia to exceed 1 million visitors annually. This is well within the destination’s reach, as in 2019, 790,000 cruise travelers visited the island. For the 2024-2025 season, which runs from October through March, the port expects to dramatically increase visitors from 2023-2024.

Current projections for the current season include 459 ship calls to St. Lucia, bringing more than 823,000 cruise guests to the island. This would set a new record for the port and introduce its beauty to many more visitors than ever before.

“We are looking forward to a busy and exciting cruise season with a positive outlook for our company and community,” said Arnold.

Of course, numbers are always subject to fluctuation depending on schedule changes for planned vessels. Furthermore, the Atlantic hurricane season, which runs from June through November, could also impact how many ships are able to visit.

Cruising to St. Lucia

Celebrity Cruises’ Celebrity Summit and Royal Caribbean’s Rhapsody of the Seas were the first ships to visit St. Lucia for the 2024-2025 season, but they are far from the only ones already to have enjoyed time at the tropical paradise.

In addition to ships from Celebrity Cruises and Royal Caribbean, vessels from Princess Cruises, Viking, P&O Cruises, Holland America Line, TUI Cruises, AIDA Cruises, Virgin Voyages, Oceania Cruises, and more all visit St. Lucia.

The island, located 475 miles southeast of Puerto Rico, is often included on longer Eastern Caribbean itineraries as well as more unique voyages and luxury explorations.

While the peak of St. Lucia’s cruise season is in the winter months when travelers crave a luxurious tropical paradise to enjoy, the destination is visited year-round by cruise lines.

The summer months are typically less popular due to higher temperatures and the risk of hurricane disruptions, but voyages to St. Lucia can still be found in June, July, and August.

Disney Cruise Line Embracing the Bold, Brilliant, Bad -- And A Little Bit Mad -- For 'Heroes And Villains' Inspired Disney Destiny

When guests set sail aboard Disney Cruise Line's new heroes and villains-inspired ship, they will discover an assortment of spaces and experiences inspired by some of Disney's most legendary schemers, scoundrels and specters — and a fearsome crew of Disney villains – at sea.

A voyage aboard the Disney Destiny will embrace the dynamic duality of every great Disney story, where opposing forces of light and dark drive characters to rise to their destinies. A diverse range of Disney, Pixar and Marvel characters will be the inspiration behind themed venues and entertainment aboard the ship, including brand-new lounges celebrating Cruella de Vil and the Pirates of the Caribbean. Even more new offerings coming to the Disney Destiny will be announced tomorrow on the Disney Parks Blog and disneycruise.com.

"The Disney Destiny is all about celebrating the bold, charismatic and driven characters at the heart of our favorite stories," said Sharon Siskie, senior vice president and general manager, Disney Cruise Line. "And who are our beloved heroes without the antagonists who challenge them to prevail? We want our guests to have fun with the unique theme of this ship, and we are having a blast creating spaces and entertainment experiences that pay tribute to the villains, anti-heroes and mischief makers who have captivated Disney film and theme park audiences for generations."

deVilish Delights

An evening at De Vil's piano lounge will be a lavish affair emblematic of the bar's namesake, the fabulously over-the-top villain Cruella de Vil of Walt Disney Animation Studios' "One Hundred and One Dalmatians" and the acclaimed 2021 live action film.

Cruella's infamous flair for style and wickedly bold attitude will be reflected in the Hollywood Regency-inspired aesthetic of the adult-exclusive lounge, where everything will be adorned in her signature color palette of red, black and white. Amid sultry tunes from the spotted piano, guests will wind down in style with trendy martinis, chic cocktails, and glamorous wines and bubblies.

One side of De Vil's will be open to the Grand Hall, allowing guests to sit back with a drink and a prime view of the ship's premier gathering space. Whether patrons choose to bask in Cruella's legacy or savor the energy and entertainment of the Grand Hall, their experience at this one-of-a-kind lounge is sure to be anything but "miserable, darling."

Drink Up, Me Hearties, Yo Ho

At Cask and Cannon, guests will join the ranks of the "Pirates of the Caribbean" for an evening of revelry, recreation and — of course — rum. Inspired by the iconic characters and scenes from the beloved Disney Parks attractions around the world, the new pub will be an eclectic yet cozy watering hole furnished with treasures "acquired" (read: pillaged and pilfered) during the pirates' many voyages around the globe.

Visiting buccaneers will regale one another with tales of their own high seas' adventures, cheer and jeer during live televised sporting events, and indulge in an extensive menu of rare, specialty and vintage rums and a selection of "bootlegged" brews developed specially for the venue and served straight from the barrel in true pirate style.

We Dare Not Stop or Waste a Drop

The Disney Destiny will introduce a quirky new storyline filled with Disney Animation villains to AquaMouse, Disney Cruise Line's signature attraction at sea — a 760-foot-long water ride towering over the upper decks of the ship. Featuring an original soundtrack written exclusively for Disney Cruise Line by Emmy award-winning composer Christopher Willis and lyricist Elyse Willis, the new show will exemplify the signature silliness of Mickey Mouse animated shorts.

In "Sing a Silly Song," Mickey and Minnie will lead guests on a seemingly ominous trek to the peak of Villain Mountain. When faced with some of the most fearsome villains of Disney Animation lore, the duo will employ a silly song — and a bit of pixie dust — to transform each chilling encounter into a wacky surprise. Guests will laugh and splash along as Queen of Hearts ("Alice in Wonderland"), Scar ("The Lion King"), Chernabog ("Fantasia") and others find themselves in unconventionally hilarious situations.

"Sing a Silly Song" will be one of four shows available on AquaMouse aboard the Disney Destiny, all complete with music, lighting, special effects and splashtacular surprises.

Be Prepared for the Chance of a Lifetime

Both heroes and villains from across the Disney universe will take center stage aboard the Disney Destiny. Guests will encounter formidable foes — including Maleficent, Hades, Cruella de Vil, Captain Hook, Mr. Smee and Oogie Boogie — through a variety of shows, meet-and-greets and special appearances throughout the ship, along with some of Disney's most mischievous and misunderstood personalities, like Captain Jack Sparrow, Bruno and Loki.

The Disney Destiny will also introduce exclusive ways for guests to interact with their favorite villains, rogues and mischief makers during all-new events and activities. This will complement a host of popular programs from across the Disney Cruise Line fleet, including a frighteningly fun dance party in Oogie Boogie's shipboard lair and an interactive Disney trivia event that often gets interrupted by a cast of Disney villains.

Happy Haunts Materialize

Foolish mortals will be welcomed to sip spirited craft cocktails among the 999 happy haunts of Disney Parks lore at the Haunted Mansion Parlor. Reminiscent of a first-class drawing room from the classic cruise liners of the golden age, this experience — which will first debut aboard the Disney Treasure in December 2024 — will invoke inspiration from the original theme park attraction with a nautical twist exclusive to Disney Cruise Line.

The venue will follow the nostalgic art style of the 1969 Disney Parks classic, blending humor with Disney's distinct brand of spooky storytelling. Legendary characters from Haunted Mansion attractions around the world will come out to socialize in mysterious ways throughout the experience, along with a few new seafaring arrivals and an original storyline focused on a ship captain. A custom musical arrangement inspired by the attraction's original score will set the stage for an ever-escalating anthology of illusions that immerses guests into the next chapter of Haunted Mansion lore.

At the Haunted Mansion Parlor, grim grinning guests will sample a selection of ghostly cocktails that capture the spirit of the story, and an exclusive array of haunted homewares and spooky souvenirs inspired by the bar will materialize in shopping venues aboard the ship.

A Ship Destined for Naughty-cal Notoriety

The Disney Destiny will be approximately 144,000 gross tons and powered by liquefied natural gas. Its delivery is part of a multi-year expansion of the Disney Cruise Line fleet that includes the Disney Wish and Disney Treasure; the Disney Adventure that will homeport in Singapore; the recently announced agreement with Disney and Oriental Land Co., Ltd. (OLC) to bring Disney cruise vacations to Japan in 2029; and a new island destination in The Bahamas: Disney Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point.
