Perched on the banks where the Nagold and Waldach rivers come together, the small town of Nagold charms visitors with its compact, walkable old town, colorful half-timbered houses, narrow alleys, and the ruins of Hohennagold Castle towering above the river valley. The town has almost 25,000 inhabitants and a rich history that goes back 2,000 years.

Four Season Destination
As it is practically the gateway to the Black Forest, Nagold is a delightful starting point for hikers and bikers all year round. There are many well-signed posted hiking and cycling trails, including the famous Nagold Valley Cycle Path. Then, with the arrival of winter, the town transforms into one of the region's most inviting seasonal destinations, offering a program filled with light, tradition, and classic German Christmas magic.

The Season of Light and Tradition
A perfect prelude to the Christmas Season in Nagold is the Night of Lights, November 20, 2026. The "Night of Lights" marks the start of Nagold’s winter season. Shops, public squares, and the facades of the old town are bathed in a warm, inviting glow. Stores stay open until 10 p.m., inviting visitors to enjoy a relaxed evening of shopping, strolling, and atmospheric illumination—it is the perfect way to kick off the pre-Christmas season.

Nagold Christmas Market, December 4–6, 2026
For three days in early December, Nagold’s town center transforms into a traditional Christmas market featuring handmade gifts, regional specialties, and the quintessential mulled wine. From many points along the town, visitors enjoy a unique perspective of the market, Vorstadtplatz, and Marktstraße, offering an unforgettable view of the festively illuminated Old Town. Set against a backdrop of historic architecture, the market fosters a warm, family-friendly atmosphere where tradition and community take center stage.

Nagold Ice Rink, late November to early January
The open-air ice rink returns to Nagold again this year, inviting locals and visitors alike to skate under the winter sky. Open from late November through early January, it is a popular gathering spot for families and fosters a sense of conviviality throughout the holiday season.

Town Hall Illumination, late November to Christmas
Every winter, Nagold’s historic town hall transforms into a work of art in its own right. Magical light displays bathe the building in captivating colors and winter-themed motifs. Each evening, a new "door" opens to reveal a fresh, festively lit design, turning the town hall into a nightly countdown to Christmas that draws locals and visitors alike to Marktstraße.

An invitation to experience the authentic Black Forest
Together, these events make Nagold a charming winter destination with a unique character. Combined with its Black Forest location, historic architecture, and easy accessibility from Stuttgart, Nagold offers a compact yet memorable introduction to the region's winter traditions.

Austrian Airlines Extends Summer Schedule with 100 Flights, Boosts Tropical Winter Routes

If you're already missing the summer sun and aren't quite ready to face the impending winter chill, Austrian Airlines has some fantastic news for your travel plans. Just in time for the autumn school holidays, the Lufthansa subsidiary announced it is significantly expanding its schedule with approximately 100 additional flights.

In response to a surge in demand for late-October getaways, Austrian Airlines is keeping the dream of a warm-weather escape alive by extending several routes that typically end with the summer flight schedule.

Here is everything you need to know about Austrian Airlines’ latest schedule updates.

Chasing the Sun: Extended Summer Routes

For travelers hoping to squeeze in one last beach trip, Austrian Airlines is maintaining connections to several beloved southern European destinations well into the autumn season.

Instead of wrapping up these routes as usual, the airline is continuing flights to:

  • Ibiza, Spain
  • Fuerteventura, Spain
  • Funchal, Madeira (Portugal)
  • Olbia, Sardinia (Italy)
  • Heraklion, Crete (Greece)

In addition to keeping these summer hotspots accessible, Austrian is also bumping up the frequency of its flights to other sunny staples, including Palma de Mallorca, Larnaca (Cyprus), Rome, Naples, and Nice. Whether you are after a relaxing island retreat or a Mediterranean city break, the extended schedule offers plenty of flexibility.

Winter Long-Haul Pivot: Asia and the Indian Ocean

As the official winter flight schedule kicks in at the end of October, Austrian Airlines is shifting its heavy-duty operational focus toward warmer, long-haul destinations across Asia and the Indian Ocean.

If a tropical winter escape is on your radar, you'll have more options than ever:

  • The Maldives & Mauritius: Flights to Malé and Mauritius will gradually ramp up to seven times a week. During the peak February semester break, this will increase to an impressive ten weekly connections.
  • An Equipment Upgrade: Starting in mid-January, passengers flying to Mauritius will get to experience the route on a modern Boeing 787-9 long-haul aircraft.
  • Thailand Bound: If you are heading to Southeast Asia, the Bangkok route will see a massive boost, offering up to two daily flights throughout January and February.

Adjustments to the North Atlantic Network

To make room for the extra capacity needed for these popular Asian and Indian Ocean routes, Austrian Airlines is temporarily reshuffling its North Atlantic schedule.

During January and February—typically a slower season for transatlantic travel—the airline will temporarily suspend select flights to Chicago, Boston, and New York (JFK). However, if you need to travel to North America during this window, flights to Newark, Washington, D.C., and Montreal will continue to operate completely uninterrupted.

European City Hops Remain Steady

For business travelers and weekend city-hoppers, rest assured that Austrian’s core European network remains rock solid. Key winter flight connections to major hubs like London, Amsterdam, Paris, and Berlin will operate without any changes.

Whether you want to catch the tail end of the Mediterranean summer or plan a tropical February escape, Austrian Airlines' expanded schedule makes it easier than ever to avoid the winter blues.

United Airlines Expands To Daily Nonstop Service To Barbados From Newark And Washington, D.C.

United Airlines is significantly ramping up its Caribbean footprint for the peak winter travel window, elevating its nonstop service to Barbados from both Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) and Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD) to daily frequencies.

The carrier, which typically operates limited weekly flights to Bridgetown's Grantley Adams International Airport (BGI), is rolling out the expanded daily schedule from December 17 through January 4 to meet surging holiday demand across the festive season.

Key Route & Schedule Details

Origin Gateway Destination Holiday Frequency Aircraft
Newark Liberty (EWR) Bridgetown, Barbados (BGI) Daily (Dec 17 – Jan 4) Boeing 737
Washington Dulles (IAD) Bridgetown, Barbados (BGI) Daily (Dec 17 – Jan 4) Boeing 737

Why Daily Frequency Matters for Travelers

  • Beyond the Saturday-to-Saturday Lock: Limited once-a-week frequencies often force vacationers and villa renters into rigid seven-day itineraries. Daily departures give travelers the flexibility to book quick 4-night long weekends or extend their Caribbean holidays through the New Year.
  • Broad Connecting Feeds: Both Newark and Washington Dulles act as massive domestic and Midwest connecting hubs for United, opening one-stop routing options to Barbados from dozens of feeder cities across the United States.
  • High-End Winter Demand: Barbados represents one of the Caribbean’s most sought-after luxury hotel and villa markets during late December, and the added seat capacity offers crucial inventory during the busiest travel fortnight of the year.

Booking & Planning

Nonstop flights on both routes take approximately 4.5 to 5 hours southbound. Seats and award availability for the holiday rush are open for booking directly through United's digital channels and Star Alliance partners.
