Cirque Du Soleil Plans A New And Hybrid Las Vegas Show

Cirque du Soleil is planning a brand new, eye-popping show on the Las Vegas Strip this spring that appropriately flips its typical script.

“Mad Apple” will feature stand-up comedians, close-up magic and a live band playing pop music onstage alongside Cirque’s famous acrobats in a new hybrid form of live entertainment.

The show — inspired by New York City’s eclectic nightlife of jazz cubs, street buskers, comedy shows and live music — will replace “Zumanity” at the New York-New York Hotel & Casino in May on the Las Vegas Strip.

“We really wanted to do something joyous and something celebratory,” veteran producer Simon Painter told The Associated Press ahead of Tuesday’s unveiling. “It’s basically a giant party, the greatest night out in New York.”

“Mad Apple” will be Cirque’s sixth Las Vegas show and the first all-new one since it emerged from bankruptcy protection with new owners. In 2020, it had to suspend its productions around the globe as the pandemic crushed live entertainment.

Visitors enter the performance space before the show to find a massive bar and are greeted by magicians. The bar then transforms into the stage and the show begins, the infamous Cirque clowns replaced by two stand-up veterans — Brad Williams and Chris Turner.

“I’m the first stand-up comedian to be a part of a Cirque show and doing traditional standup,” said Williams. “That’s really exciting to me because I do like doing things that I’ve never done before.”

Usually, a Cirque show means pre-recorded whimsical and atmospheric worldbeat music, but not here. A live band with singers will stay onstage for most of “Mad Apple” performing hits by the likes of Billy Joel and Lady Gaga, including tunes by the Gershwins and notable jazz, culminating in “a big sort of Studio 54 party,” Painter said. “The whole show is set to the soundtrack of New York.”

Unlike many of Cirque’s big-top shows, there will be no narrative. “Given the current state of the world and everything else, we wanted to do a piece that was pure entertainment,” said Painter.

“Mad Apple” won’t skimp on physical stunts, with acrobats tumbling on top of a New York City taxi, an acrobat swinging on a New York street sign and the show closing with an acrobat doing tricks on an aerial pendulum of the Empire State Building.

“You could go see an acrobatic Cirque show. You can go see a live band. You can go see a magician. You can go see a comedian — and that’s four separate shows. Or you can go see ‘Mad Apple’ at New York-New York and all of that will be in one show,” said Williams. “This is a Cirque show that is really trying new things.”

When he was approached by Painter, Williams asked what sort of comedy the creative team was looking for. Would there need to be a theme, topics to avoid or suggested areas? “Simon said the most beautiful thing a performer could ever hear,” said Williams. “He said, ‘All I care is that it’s funny.’”

The show in some ways promises to nod to Cirque’s DIY Canadian roots. The now-global entertainment giant started out humbly with just a couple of buskers in Quebec.

Painter’s company, The Works Entertainment, which Cirque acquired in 2019, has developed several other live shows including “The Illusionists” and “Circus 1903,” which have always had a strong comedic element. Neil Dorward, veteran The Works director, will direct “Mad Apple.”

MSC Cruises reveals further details of the first of its features-packed next generation smart ship launching in June 2017

With just twelve months to go until the first guests set sail on-board MSC Meraviglia, MSC Cruises — the Swiss-based world’s largest privately-owned cruise line and brand market leader in Europe, South America and South Africa — has today revealed further details of its first next-generation smart ship.  Designed around meeting every need of its guests, MSC Meraviglia will introduce new, cutting edge ways to connect vacationers seamlessly with the experiences that matter to them, whether at sea or on land.

With the first cruise scheduled for June 4, 2017, MSC Meraviglia will feature the ultimate in entertainment, alongside a broad range of dining options and luxurious wellness choices.  In addition to the on-board experience, the ship will spend her inaugural summer season sailing the western Mediterranean—calling at beautiful, historic destinations with a unique, highly-tailored program of discovery excursions, to immerse guests in local culture and tastes.

1.       Exclusive, world-class entertainment from Cirque du Soleil
The highlight of on-board entertainment will be represented by the world leader in artistic performance, Cirque du Soleil, thanks to the exclusiveCirque du Soleil at Sea partnership with MSC Cruises.

Two unique Cirque du Soleil shows will be performed on-board in the evenings, 6 nights per week, at the purpose-built Carousel Lounge. In addition, MSC Cruises will offer an exclusive on-site dinner service for up to 100 of the 450 guests booked for the show, elevating MSC Cruises’ exquisite dining and award-winning entertainment to yet another level. In fact, this is a unique experience that cannot be had anywhere else at sea — or in the world, for that matter.

MSC Cruises designed a custom-made entertainment venue, the Carousel Lounge, for MSC Meraviglia and its three Meraviglia and Meraviglia-Plus sister smart cruise ships.  Featuring the latest technology, this ground-breaking venue, which has been designed to meet the needs of Cirque du Soleil and its performers, will be a stunning circular performance space with a 180° circular glass wall.  Constructed with the most cutting edge equipment and special rigging, the Carousel Lounge will enable Cirque du Soleil performers to deliver their world-renowned performances for the exclusive enjoyment of MSC Cruises guests.

2.       Enriched family offering and cutting-edge entertainment for all ages
With MSC Meraviglia, MSC Cruises continues to evolve and enrich the family options that have historically been at the core of its offering. The facilities and services for families on every MSC Cruises vacation, are designed to ensure that it is engaging for all members of the family, both together and individually.

For the first time on any MSC Cruises ship, all of the facilities for families, kids and teens are all together in a super amusement park and children’s area.  This means families have a dedicated area specially designed for their needs, providing a safe place for children, and an opportunity to also meet and get to know other families. This area includes the DOREMI Studio Lounge, a dedicated lounge for all family activities, DOREMI Tech Lab, a must visit destination for kids who love technology, as well as facilities designed in partnership with family experts including the LEGO Group and Chicco.

Amongst other features, the on-board Aqua Park will include four action-packed water slides, a splash pool and champagne bowl. And the Himalayan Bridge will thrill adventure seekers, who can attach themselves to a rope and cross the ship, nearly 200 feet above the water.

3.       Comfortable accommodations to meet every need
The innovative accommodations on MSC Meraviglia demonstrate the way that MSC Cruises puts the guest at the heart of its designs and ship building — the way in which only a family-owned business can. With 10 different types of staterooms to choose from, there really is something for everyone.

The MSC Yacht Club
MSC Meraviglia features an enhanced MSC Yacht Club with luxurious accommodation, now spanning three decks with 78 suites, 15 inside staterooms and two apartments. The two coveted apartment suites are designed with a large living room and two balconies, one of which is a large outdoor space that has a dining table for eating al fresco and a private whirlpool.

This unique “ship within a ship” concept is specially designed for guests seeking exclusivity and privacy in a world full of choice.  MSC Yacht Club guests can thus enjoy the world-class entertainment, specialty restaurants and boutiques before returning to their own private, luxurious sanctuary.

With unparalleled luxury comparable to that of a private yacht, it also provides key benefits including the Top Sail Lounge, an entirely self-contained private club, offering panoramic sea views, and the One Pool Deck, featuring a private pool, whirlpool baths and solarium.  A private elevator will transport guests discreetly to the MSC Aurea Spa to experience the delights of an authentic Balinese spa, with an exclusive MSC Yacht Club massage and treatment room.

Modular staterooms designed with the needs of families in mind
The trend for multi-generational vacations is further met on this ship with a clever modular staterooms system, which is unique to MSC Cruises.  Up to three staterooms can be combined together to accommodate up to 10 guests.

In addition to the modular staterooms, quadruple staterooms can accommodate a family of up to four people each, with a living space in the daytime, and a sofa that turns into a comfortable bed by night – making the most effective use of space in the stateroom.

4.       A truly unprecedented choice of both fine and casual dining options
MSC Meraviglia makes available to her guests an unprecedented choice of both fine and casual options through 12 venues – in true MSC Cruises fashion - serving always fresh, authentic food. This starts with the buffet, open 20-hours a day, which will serve a delicious array of Mediterranean specialties and international cuisines – including ethnic, “itinerary” and wellness corners, plus a multitude of other tastes and dietary needs catered for round-the-clock.
In addition, fine dining options examples include the award-winning Kaito Sushi Bar, the new Kaito Teppanyaki Restaurant and an American-style steakhouse with specialty meats from around the world (details of additional fine dining options will be revealed over time).

5.       The 315 foot long Mediterranean-style promenade
Another outstanding feature of MSC Meraviglia is her impressive Mediterranean-style indoor promenade, featuring a 262 foot LED sky that creates an awe-inspiring atmosphere 24 hours a day.  With stunning visuals and effects, the Promenade will be the social center of the ship and a focal point for a broad range of leisure activities.  Amongst others, guests can stroll up and down, sit back and take in the atmosphere, shop until their hearts’ content, or snack on delicious ice cream or crepes from Jean Philippe Maury, the award-winning French chocolatier and pastry chef.

6.       Elegant pools for daytime relaxation and night-time entertainment
MSC Meraviglia offers all her guests a choice of three elegantly designed pools:
·         The main pool, located on deck 15 is inspired by the cool vibes of Miami’s South Beach.  At approximately 82 feet long, it has the most generous poolside space at sea.  By night, the pool becomes a visual spectacle, illuminated with special lighting.  There is also a buffet nearby with inside and outdoor dining options, providing guests with more convenience and optimal relaxation time.
·         As MSC Meraviglia is the ship for all seasons, there is a 33 foot indoor pool with a magrodome that can be opened when the ship is in port or the weather simply allows for it.
·         Finally, the Aft Pool on deck 16 offers spectacular views from the front of the ship, while by night is transformed into a space where guests can dance the night away under the stars.

Additionally, the private One Deck Pool, exclusively for the use of MSC Yacht Club guests, is in a coveted position at the top of the ship on deck 19 providing a quiet hideaway for relaxation.

These are just some of the special features of the incredible MSC Meraviglia and more will be revealed soon. Seeing really will be believing - sales for summer 2017 are open so to find out more visit: http://mscmeraviglia.com/us/en

What Show Should I See in Vegas? Here Are Travel Zoo's Picks, by Price

As our Las Vegas entertainment Deal Expert, the question I’m most commonly asked is, naturally, “What show should I see in Vegas?”
It’s a fair question. There are — quite literally — hundreds of live entertainment options to choose from. The second you land at McCarran, you’re bombarded with show advertisements, which follow you into the taxi cab, on billboards on your way to The Strip all the way into your hotel room. You likely have time to see one, maybe two, shows during your trip. How do you decide?
Ask yourself this simple question: “How much do you want to spend?”

Under $20

tzoo.hd.21346.0.279185.CavemanKevinBurke
If your answer is “not much,” you’ve still got a ton of choices.
For couples, I recommend checking out “Defending the Caveman” downtown at The D for just $17.50. The show’s a long-running, sitcom-comedy-esque look at couplehood.
If you don’t want to spend much because you’ve got the entire family to pay for, our most popular option is“Nathan Burton Comedy Magic” at just $10 per ticket (and no fees!). It’s located inside the Miracle Mile Shops at Planet Hollywood and plays daily at the kid-friendly time of 4 p.m.

$20-$40

tzoo.hd.31711.0.392981.MattGoss
At this price range, you can get great seats at some purely Vegas shows — my recommendations include the popular drag show “Frank Marino’s Divas Las Vegas” at LINQ Hotel for $27.05 and celebrity tribute show “Legends in Concerts” at Flamingo for $35.
Matt Goss’ show at Caesars Palace is another good choice, coming in at $39. The singer’s Sinatra-esque set at the swanky Cleopatra’s Barge is a modern spin on classic Vegas lounge acts.

$40-$60

tzoo.hd.24748.0.355048.x_BMB1630_2-CMYKjpg
This is the sweet spot of what I’d say to expect to spend on a typical Vegas show. For this range, you’ll be able to lock in tickets to the most popular and long-running acts in town.
Penn & Teller and Blue Man Group are longtime Travelzoo favorites, at $45 and $52, respectively. You can’t top Penn & Teller when it comes to magic shows, and if you’ve never seen Blue Man Group before, I’d say it’s a unique experience everyone should have at least once.
Another great pick is Vegas favorite Terry Fator, who won “America’s Got Talent” and has since become a big success on The Strip with his celebrity impressions. Tickets for the show start at $48 for Travelzoo members.

$60-$100

tzoo.hd.17685.0.411254.LOVE
Now we’re hitting the range where you can see a Cirque du Soleil show. Right now, we’ve got tickets to“The Beatles LOVE” starting at $75.76 each ($151.51 for a pair) that’ll give you great views of the iconic show. If you are new to Cirque du Soleil, this is a great place to start.

$100+

tzoo.hd.31257.10608.la-reve
Almost all shows offer upgraded seating levels in this price range to get you up close to the action, which is always a fun way to see a show.
But my top pick if you’re willing to splurge is the aquatic show “Le Rêve — The Dream” at Wynn Las Vegas. Tickets start at $120 for Travelzoo members, and the show is filled with tons of “wow” moments as entertainers and acrobats make their way through the gorgeous theater-in-the-round.
Still undecided? Check out our Vegas Entertainment page for more inspiration.

Travelore Cruise News: MSC Cruises and Cirque du Soleil Announce Partnership

MSC_POSMTLP388611:Users:mclynn:Documents:CDS:Package:469_CDS_LOGO_YEL_INV_R_ORIGINAL.jpg

MSC Cruises — the Geneva, Switzerland-based global cruise line — today announced a long-term partnership with Cirque du Soleil — the Quebec-based world leader in artistic entertainment — that will set new standards in live entertainment at sea. In a first at sea, brand new Cirque du Soleil shows will be created exclusively for MSC Cruises guests aboard the cruise line’s next-generation Meraviglia ships in a multi-million dollar, ground-breaking entertainment and dining venue, designed in collaboration by MSC Cruises and Cirque du Soleil.

Exquisite dining and award-winning entertainment are two key distinguishing elements of the MSC Cruises experience. To elevate these two elements to the next level, MSC Cruises and Cirque du Soleil together imagined and are building a completely custom-made, latest-technology dining and entertainment venue —the first of its kind at sea — for MSC Cruises’ Meraviglia ships. This is where MSC Cruises guests will be able to enjoy brand new, exclusive Cirque du Soleil shows, six nights a week, two performances per night – all while enjoying an extraordinary MSC Cruises culinary experience.

The specifically-designed venue represents an industry-first $21 million investment, in which the custom-built entertainment and dining Aft lounge is equipped with the latest technology and best-suited to the needs of both Cirque du Soleil artists and guests. The 10,760 sq ft, 450-seat Aft lounge will feature a 200-seat dining area so that guests can enjoy an exquisite dinner or drinks before the performance. Cirque du Soleil’s world-class artists will deliver two shows created exclusively for MSC Cruises that will capture the imagination of all guests. Shows and related dining options will be available only to MSC Cruises guests aboard the four next-generation Meraviglia project ships, the first of which – MSC Meraviglia – is set to sail its inaugural season in the Mediterranean from June 2017.

“MSC Cruises is a company built on innovation, from the unique, prototype ships we design and build to the on-board experiences we conceive and create,” said  Pierfrancesco Vago, Executive Chairman of MSC Cruises. “Together with our newest world-class partner, Cirque du Soleil, we imagined and are now designing a totally new, live entertainment experience exclusively for our guests; an original show in a multimillion-dollar custom-built venue aboard a ship we designed ourselves, down to the last detail. It’s this commitment to innovation, and the vision and creativity that only a family-owned company can apply, that make MSC Cruises so distinct.”

“We have found in MSC a long term partner with a clear vision about trends in the cruising industry and a strong desire to be the leader by bringing entertainment on board to a whole new level,” said Yasmine Khalil, President 45 DEGREES, Cirque du Soleil’s Special Projects Company. “For Cirque du Soleil, this is what inspires us and provides us with a great creative challenge that we require for each new relationship and project that we embark on.”

This ground-breaking new offering will first be available aboard MSC Meraviglia,  the most innovative cruise ship ever built by a global European-based cruise line. The cutting-edge 4,500-guest (based on double occupancy), 167,600-GRT ship — due to be delivered in May 2017— will spend her first summer sailing the western Mediterranean, and will be the first to have three major ports of embarkation: Genoa, Marseille and Barcelona. Cruises for MSC Meraviglia’s inaugural season are already on sale and can be accessed here or via preferred travel agents around the world.

How the TO2015 Ticketing Program Works
1.) Request your tickets: Starting Monday, September 15 at 10 a.m. (ET) and running until Monday, October 6 at 9 p.m. (ET), the public can use this early access period to request the hottest Games tickets at TORONTO2015.org/tickets.
Along with the official online ticket sales channel, customers may also request tickets by telephone toll-free within Canada and the U.S. at 1.855.726.2015 and internationally at 1.949.333.4824.
To ensure fairness, in situations where more tickets are requested than available for an event, customer ticket requests will be placed in a lottery. This lottery system, which is often used at mega-events like the recent Olympic Games in Vancouver and London, ensures everyone will have equal access to the most in-demand tickets.
2.) Ticket order processing: Customers will receive an email in late November 2014 telling them to check their account and see whether their ticket requests were successful.
All tickets not snapped up during the ticket request phase from September 15 to October 6 will be available through general sale, where tickets will be sold on a first-come, first-serve basis, beginning in December 2014. Further details on this process will be released after the ticket request phase ends.
