The trend of unbundling airline tickets has officially reached the front of the plane. Starting in fall 2026, United Airlines is introducing a new "Base" fare tier for its domestic First Class and short-haul international Business Class cabins, essentially creating a "Basic Economy" experience for premium flyers.
What is United's "Base" First Class?
Just like standard Basic Economy, this new lower-priced First Class ticket strips away several pre-flight perks that travelers have long associated with premium travel. While the onboard experience remains exactly the same—you will still get the wider seat, complimentary alcoholic beverages, and hot meals —the ticket restrictions are significantly tighter.
Here is what you sacrifice when booking the new United First "Base" fare:
- No Free Seat Selection: You will have to pay an additional fee to choose your seat in advance.
- Reduced Baggage Allowance: Base fares only include one free checked bag, compared to the two checked bags included with Standard and Flexible First Class fares.
- No Flight Changes: If your plans change, you are out of luck. Flight changes are strictly prohibited on these fares.
- Non-Refundable: The base fare is entirely non-refundable.
The Silver Lining: Lounge Access Survives
Interestingly, United has opted not to strip away lounge access for those routes where it is typically included. If your route normally grants United Club access, the Base fare will still get you through the lounge doors.
Three Tiers of First Class
With this change, United will offer three distinct premium cabin fare types:
- Base: 1 checked bag, no free seat selection, no flight changes allowed, non-refundable.
- Standard: 2 checked bags, free seat selection, flight changes allowed, non-refundable.
- Flexible: 2 checked bags, free seat selection, flight changes allowed, fully refundable.
For frequent flyers and commercial aviation enthusiasts, this move marks a major shift in how airlines merchandise their most expensive seats. While it provides a lower entry price for passengers who simply want a comfortable seat and a meal, it also means reading the fine print is more important than ever before you click "buy."
