Nayarit’s Jungle Coast Redefines Luxury Travel On Mexico’s Pacific—Now More Accessible Than Ever

Along Mexico’s Pacific coast, a new expression of luxury is taking shape—one that trades excess for immersion, privacy for connection, and traditional resort experiences for a more profound relationship with nature. In the state of Nayarit, the jungle-meets-ocean landscape is emerging as one of the most compelling frontiers in high-end travel—now supported by a new era of seamless access.

Where Jungle and Ocean Converge

Here, the Sierra Madre mountains descend dramatically into the Pacific, creating a rare environment where lush tropical jungle, secluded coves, and pristine coastline exist in near-perfect balance. This geography defines the experience—where mornings begin with wildlife sightings and end with uninterrupted ocean sunsets.

A New Definition of Luxury

Luxury in Nayarit is no longer defined by scale but by experience. Travelers are seeking privacy, authenticity, and environments that blend seamlessly into nature. Along this stretch of coastline, open-air living, organic design, and a deep connection to the surrounding landscape have become the new standard.

This evolution reflects a broader shift in global travel—where meaningful experiences and environmental integration are as important as comfort and exclusivity.

A Gateway to the Jungle Coast

The emergence of the Riviera Nayarit International Airport (TPQ) is transforming how travelers access this once-remote region. Located just outside Tepic, the airport has undergone a major expansion and modernization, offering a streamlined arrival experience and direct international connectivity.

With new routes connecting key North American markets, the airport provides a less congested alternative to traditional gateways—placing travelers within reach of Nayarit’s coastline in under an hour via newly upgraded highways.

This proximity is redefining the destination’s appeal, opening access to previously underexplored areas of the state while maintaining the sense of seclusion that defines its luxury positioning.

Infrastructure Designed for Exploration

Nayarit’s transformation is also being driven by a significant investment in road infrastructure. A new network of highways—including Tepic–Compostela, Compostela–Las Varas, and coastal connectors—has dramatically reduced travel times between inland and coastal destinations.

Key routes now cut travel between Tepic and the coast by half, while new corridors linking Tepic to Puerto Vallarta reduce travel times to 75–90 minutes, creating a more fluid, multi-destination journey across the region.

These improvements not only enhance accessibility but also elevate the overall travel experience, turning the journey itself into a scenic exploration through jungle, mountains, and coastline.

Immersive Outdoor Experiences

The jungle coast invites both adventure and stylishness. Visitors can hike through dense tropical forests, explore hidden beaches, paddle along quiet coves, or surf uncrowded breaks—each experience grounded in the natural rhythm of the region.

Culture, Craft, and Connection

Beyond its landscapes, Nayarit’s identity is deeply tied to its cultural heritage. Indigenous communities, including the Wixárika, continue to shape the region’s artistic and spiritual traditions, offering travelers meaningful opportunities to connect with living culture.

Sustainability as a Guiding Principle

As development accelerates, sustainability remains central. Low-density planning, conservation initiatives, and environmentally integrated design are guiding the region’s growth—ensuring that its beauty remains intact for future generations.

The Future of Pacific Coast Travel

With its rare combination of untouched landscapes, cultural depth, and a reimagined approach to luxury—now supported by enhanced airlift and modern infrastructure—Nayarit is redefining travel on Mexico’s Pacific coast.

The result is a destination that feels both exclusive and accessible: where jungle meets ocean, and where the journey—now easier than ever—is as transformative as the destination itself.

About Nayarit

Located along Mexico’s Pacific coast, Nayarit is a fast-growing tourism destination known for its blend of luxury, nature, and cultural authenticity. Home to the Riviera Nayarit, the state features more than 300 kilometers of coastline with world-class resorts, boutique hotels, surf towns, and protected natural areas, alongside nine Pueblos Mágicos and rich indigenous heritage.

Volaris Launches First International Route To Tepic-Riviera Nayarit Airport, Connecting Los Angeles And Mexico’s Pacific Coast

Volaris, Mexico’s largest airline, launched its first international route to the Tepic-Riviera Nayarit International Airport on Wednesday, marking a milestone in regional connectivity with nonstop service to Los Angeles, California.

The new route, operated with an Airbus A320neo aircraft configured for 186 passengers, will run three times weekly on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Flights from Tepic depart at 6:50 a.m., arriving in Los Angeles at 9:48 a.m., with return flights departing LAX at 11:37 a.m. and arriving in Tepic at 2:27 p.m.

The launch represents the first direct international connection between the United States and the Riviera Nayarit, a growing tourist destination on Mexico’s Pacific coast. Through Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), the new route also links the region to a wide array of global destinations.

“Today is a very important day for Nayarit with the arrival of the first international flight to the Tepic-Riviera Nayarit Airport,” said Miguel Ángel Navarro Quintero, governor of Nayarit.

This new Volaris route is not just an air connection—it’s an opportunity to unite cultures, connect people and create new opportunities.”

Volaris now serves nine destinations in Mexico from Los Angeles, with Tepic-Riviera Nayarit as its newest addition.

“For years, Angelinos have played a key role in the growth of our state as one of Mexico’s top tourist destinations, with the Riviera Nayarit being a major attraction,” Navarro Quintero said. “This new route will make it easier to access not just the coast, but also other areas of the state that offer culture, nature, history and unique landscapes.”

The route is expected to boost local tourism and economic development. Officials anticipate increased income and job opportunities for communities across the state, particularly in tourism-related sectors such as transportation, hospitality and tour services.

The flight supports Volaris’ strategic growth in the region, complementing its existing route to Tijuana. The Tepic-Riviera Nayarit area is home to major resorts, including Four Seasons, St. Regis and Ritz-Carlton properties, and offers a range of attractions from surf beaches and golf courses to colonial towns and natural reserves.

The airline’s expansion coincides with ongoing infrastructure development in Nayarit. A new regional highway project—linking the airport to destinations such as Sayulita, San Blas and Punta Mita—is nearing completion.

A complementary ground transportation network will also be launched to connect travelers from the airport to key tourist areas within 20to 50 minutes, providing efficient, affordable transfers across the Riviera Nayarit.

Discover Nayarit’s Coolest Mountain Towns This Summer To Escape The Heat

While Mexico’s coastal hotspots heat up for the summer, savvy travelers are heading uphill — quite literally — to uncover the breezy mountain escapes tucked deep in southern Nayarit. Away from the beach crowds and humid shorelines, the Magical Towns of Jala, Compostela, Amatlán de Cañas, and the tranquil volcanic lagoon of SantaMaría del Oro are offering fresh air, cool climates, and immersive cultural experiences that make for the perfect summer hideout.

Jala: The Original Magic in the Mountains

Perched at the foot of El Ceboruco, an active volcano cloaked in mist and mystery, Jala was the first town in Nayarit to earn the coveted “Pueblo Mágico” title. Known for its cobblestone streets, colonial architecture, and enormous cliffs, Jala comes alive in the rainy season when the surrounding hills burst into lush shades of green. Visitors flock to hike the volcano’s slopes, wander historic neighborhoods, and sample traditional dishes like corn cookies, torrejas, and tostadas with pork leg.

The town’s deep connection to maize iseverywhere. Not only does it produce some of the world’s largest corn cobs(some clocking in at 17 inches), but it also honors this legacy with the Elote Fair in August. Spanish heritage lives on in landmarks like the Basilica Lateranense de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción, and the former Convent of Limpiay Purísima Concepción de María, whose pink stone façade features a Virgin with indigenous features and attire, a rare blending of Catholic and native iconography. Beneath the convent, tunnels and crypts hold centuries of stories, from friars to plague victims. The nearby Museum of Sacred Art is the first of its kind in Nayarit.

Accommodations range from cozy hostels to sophisticated stays like Nukari Quinta Boutique, a lovingly restored 18th-century mansion offering gourmet dining, spa rituals, and panoramic rooftop views of the volcano. Nature lovers can also venture out to Salto de Jomulco or bike and camp along the volcanic valley.

Compostela: A Colonial City with Cool Forests and Hot Springs

Founded in 1530, Compostela is one of the oldest colonial towns in the region and an ideal summer retreat thanks to its blend of coastal breeze and mountainous cool. Here, visitors can spend a day exploring centuries-old landmarks like the Parish of Santiago Apóstol, soaking in natural hot springs, or sampling “pollo al Ixtlán” and pescado zarandeado at the local market.

Nature lovers will find bliss in the nearby forested areas, perfect for camping and cycling. Looking to go deeper? The Alta Vista archaeological site showcases mysterious petroglyphs. Whether strolling through shaded leather workshops or sipping on agua fresca after a forest hike, Compostela is a place where culture and climate combine for afresh, summer getaway.

Amatlán de Cañas: A Hidden Jewel of Rivers,Spas, and Chocolate

Just a winding mountain road away lies Amatlánde Cañas, one of Nayarit’s newest Magical Towns and a sanctuary for wellness seekers and adventure travelers. This quiet village near the Jalisco border is known for its rugged beauty, ancient temples, and artisanal chocolate workshops. Its crown jewel is El Manto, a natural spa with crystal-clear waterfalls enclosed by towering rock walls.

The area offers a rare blend of relaxation and excitement. Visitors can tour abandoned mining towns like El Pilón, embark on hiking and biking trails, or dip into one of many local hot springs.Traditional dishes like tomato-braised tongue and birria add a cozy warmth toeven the coolest nights, and lodging options are simple but welcoming, withresorts available right near El Manto for those looking for a longer stay.

Santa María del Oro: Where Stillness Meets the Sky

A short 40-minute drive from Nayarit’s capital, Tepic, Santa María del Oro is Nayarit’s answer to the call for peaceful mountain lake energy. Centered around a mesmerizing lagoon nestled in the crater of an extinct volcano, this destination is where heat and hustle disappear, with ever-changing hues of turquoise and cobalt across the water.

Boutique stays like Hotel Chi’l Jaj blend into the volcanic landscape, while waterfront restaurants serve specialties like fish chicharrón and marinated seafood platters. Activities on the lagoon include paddleboarding, kayaking, and slow boat rides to hidden alcoves. For thrill-seekers, Arcadia Park Adventure nearby offers zip-lining and rappelling among pines and waterfalls. But the real magic of Santa María del Oro is in the silence, a rare and restorative gift in a busy world.

Why Head for the Hills This Summer?

With average temperatures hovering around 22–23°C (71–73°F), these highland havens offer a natural alternative to crowded beaches and sticky heat. Each town is rich with local culture, surrounded by impressive landscapes, and filled with welcoming communities eager to share their traditions, from hand-pressed tortillas and heritage crafts to sacred petroglyphs and ancient architecture.

Mexico’s State Of Nayarit Embraces All With #NAYARITFOREVERONE

This Pride season, the Mexican state of Nayarit is embracing its place as one of the country’s most welcoming destinations for the LGBTQ+ traveler with pride celebrations taking place across the state, including two marches that look to show that Nayarit is for Everyone.

Nayarit has been catching the eyes of LGBTQ travelers for a while now. It was one of the first states in Mexico that recognized same-sex marriage, and as a member of IGLTA and Queer Destinations-certified, it has always been a champion for inclusivity. This year, Pride Celebrations will start on June 12th with Bahia Pride in the Riviera Nayarit jewel of Sayulita. The three-day event will feature performances by national performers with Sayulinda Hotel offering roof-top parties daily. The state capital, Tepic, will host its annual Marcha del Orgullo Nayarit (Nayarit Pride March) on Saturday, June 21 at 4 PM with marches taking over Downtown.

The recipe for a world-class LGBTQ destination is simple. What you need are fabulous hotels, beautiful beaches, exquisite dining, electric nightlife, gorgeous scenery and, of course, an inclusive energy. Enter Mexico’s State of Nayarit, a destination that exceeds in these areas and beyond. It’s a place practically tailor-made for LGBTQ travel.

Nayarit is home to many wonderful cities, beach towns, and small villages, all of which are ready to welcome and host LGBTQ travelers. From the gorgeous beachfront resorts and restaurants of Nuevo Vallarta to the boutique-heavy bohemian beach towns like Sayulita, the luxury hotspots of Punta Mita, and the rugged nature and beautiful wildlife of San Blas, Nayarit has a vibe to fit every style of traveler.

Among the top draws to Nayarit for LGBTQ+ travelers is the lengthy list of luxury hotels, resorts, and villas. Punta Mita is one of the top luxury enclaves within the state of Nayarit, home to five-star resorts like St. Regis Punta Mita, the Four Seasons Punta Mita and the newly opened Susurros del Corazon, part of the Auberge Resorts Collection. Travelers will also find resorts like Conrad Punta Mita and W Punta Mita along the Punta Mita peninsula, as well as one of the most robust villa rental portfolios in the country. To the north, the One&Only Mandarina and the Rosewood Mandarina offer one of a kind seclusion in luxury. More boutique hotel options can be found in between, from the village of Bucerias up through Sayulita and San Pancho.

Nayarit is perfect for the active LGBTQ+ travelers who want to experience more than the beaches — though the beaches along the Riviera Nayarit are among the most pristine in Mexico, particularly for surfers. Wildlife enthusiasts can spot thousands of migratory birds in the seaside village of San Pancho. Islas Marietas National Park is just off the coast of Punta Mita, which is a protected park known for its marine life, as well as its birds. A hidden beach can be found here, too, which is one of the top activities for travelers to Nayarit. Hiking, mountain biking, and yoga are all part of the Nayarit experience.

Visitors can also take their time learning about history and culture. Nayarit has four of Mexico’s famous Pueblos Magicos, or Magic Towns that are recognized for their preserved history, culture, and traditions. Sayulita is arguably the most famous Pueblo Magico in Nayarit (and one of the most famous in Mexico), but Nayarit is also home to Compostela, Jala, and Mexcaltitan. Compostela has splendid churches and gorgeous colonial architecture, as well as one of Mexico’s largest bird sanctuaries. The town of Jala sits in the shadow of the Ceboruco Volcano, which is a beautiful spot for hiking or watching the sunset. Mexcaltitan is an island just a short boat ride away from San Blas. It’s known as the Venice of Mexico, thanks to the canals that form within the streets during the rainy season. The car-free island is splashed with brightly colored houses and features some of the best seafood and ceviche in Mexico.

Access to Nayarit from the U.S. and Canada is incredibly easy. The Bay of Banderas Airport (PVR) as well as the Guadalajara Airport are just a quick drive away. Volaris Airlines will operate direct flights from Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) to the Riviera Nayarit International Airport (TPQ) starting July 16th.

The beauty of the state of Nayarit is that it offers a little bit of something for everyone. Every type of traveler, regardless of sexual orientation, has their own style and vibe, and the state of Nayarit has a resort, community, and experience to match.

Traditional Nayarit Dishes: A Taste of Heritage

While fine dining has taken root along Nayarit’s coastline, the state’s culinary soul remains grounded in its traditional dishes, which are often passed down through generations. Nayarit’s cuisine is deeply connected to its coastal geography, where the sea provides an endless supply of fresh ingredients, and the culture celebrates communal, slow-cooked meals.

One of Nayarit’s most iconic dishes is Pescado Zarandeado. This savory dish features whole fish, typically red snapper, marinated in a mix of chiles, garlic, and citrus before being grilled over hot coals. The fish takes on a smoky flavor that is perfectly balanced by the tangy marinade, a testament to Nayarit’s expertise in grilling techniques.

Another local favorite is Chicharrón de Pescado, crispy fried fish bites often served with a side of spicy salsa. This dish highlights Nayarit’s love of simple, bold flavors, where fresh fish is seasoned and cooked to golden perfection.

Nayarit is also known for more complex dishes like Tlaxtihuilli, a pre-Hispanic soup made from shrimp and thickened with masa. This hearty dish is a staple in rural communities, where the flavors of ancient traditions are kept alive in everyday meals.

The region’s culinary diversity extends beyond seafood to dishes like Puerco Echado, a slow-cooked pork dish seasoned with native herbs and spices, offering a rich and savory experience. It’s served with handmade tortillas and a side of beans, embodying the hearty, comforting essence of Nayarit’s inland cuisine.

No exploration of Nayarit’s flavors would be complete without trying Tejuino, a traditional beverage made from fermented corn dough mixed with brown sugar and lime juice. This refreshing drink is beloved throughout the region, especially on warm afternoons, and reflects the importance of maize in local culture.

A Growing Coffee Culture

Beyond the beaches and coastal delicacies, Nayarit is also becoming known for its coffee culture, particularly in the town of Compostela. Here, the lush highlands provide the perfect climate for growing rich, aromatic coffee beans. Small-batch coffee farms, many family-owned for generations, are producing some of Mexico’s most sought-after brews. Visitors can enjoy fresh, locally roasted coffee at one of Compostela’s many charming cafes, where the art of brewing is celebrated alongside the region’s rich agricultural history.

29th Festival Gourmet International: A Showcase of Nayarit’s Culinary Brilliance

Nayarit’s gastronomic allure will be on full display at the 29th Festival Gourmet International, running from November 7 to 17, 2024. Twenty-Four Great Reasons To Visit Nayarit, Mexico This Spring

Mexico’s State of Nayarit has long been a favorite for beach travelers, but few tourists are fully aware of all that this unique part of Mexico has to offer.

While Nayarit is indeed blessed with one of the most spectacular coastlines in the country, it is also a region steeped in ancient history, arts and culture, and gastronomy. It provides unparalleled wellness experiences and is a champion of environmental and social sustainability. Add to that adventure-packed outdoor experiences, national parks, and more Magical Towns than any other state in Mexico.

If you’re looking for the next great adventure in Mexico, read on to discover why 2024 is the year to experience the State of Nayarit.

1.Wellness

The beautiful jungle-covered mountains, crashing Pacific coastline, and abundance of wildlife sets the ideal backdrop for a wellness journey. Whether it's an indulgent treatment at a world-class spa in Punta de Mita, a multi-day yoga retreat in Sayulita, or an ancient healing ritual rooted in centuries of indigenous tradition, Nayarit has everything travelers need to embark on a wellness journey.

2.Sustainability

A leader in environmental preservation, Nayarit's tourism growth is focused on sustainability. Nayarit is a member of the Hotel Basics initiative of the World Travel and Tourism Council, which seeks to take an important step towards the care of natural environments and respect for the communities. Hotels must work under sustainability criteria, such as reducing energy and water consumption, reducing carbon emissions, protecting the environment, and contributing positively to the environment and its communities.

3.Gastronomy

Nayarit's wealth is not only determined by its natural beauty. Its gastronomy is part of what makes this state unique. Dishes like Pescado Zarandeado and Chicharron de Pescado can trace their roots back to pre-Hispanic times. Also native to Nayarit is Tlaxtihuilli, a seafood soup that uses shrimp, corn, and guajillo chiles. Don’t forget to sample the raicilla, a highly potent spirit made from the agave plant, similar to tequila and mezcal.

4.Indigenous Culture

Travelers who want to learn more about the indigenous communities of Nayarit can head to the Sierra del Nayar, a region of Nayarit characterized by mountain ranges, jungles, and native communities that have kept their traditions and customs alive. The groups that settled in the Sierra del Nayar are the Coras, Huicholes, Tepehuanos, and Mexicaneros.

A visit to the community of El Nayar is the best place to learn about these communities. The main ethnic groups here are the Cora and Huichol and their Holy Week has been designated an Intangible World Heritage by UNESCO. The event features men painted in body paint from head to toe, fighting ritual battles with wooden swords, dancing, feasting, and much more.

5.Wildlife

The natural beauty and wildlife of Nayarit is unparalleled, from marine life to migratory birds, jungle wildcats, and beyond. So much of the state is protected in Natural Reserves where its wildlife can thrive. Parque Nacional Islas Marietas, for example, located just five miles from Punta de Mita, is home to a diverse number of endemic species, while Sierra de Vallejo is home to the Santuario del Jaguar, a nearly 5,000-acreprotected area known for its jaguar population.

6.Coffee

Coffee culture is more than just a trend in Nayarit — it's a way of life. Some of the best organic coffee in the world is grown in the state. The warm, humid climate, volcanic mountain soil, and high altitude make Nayarit one of the best coffee producers in Mexico. Not only is it possible to sip a great cup of coffee, but visitors can tour the coffee plantations. Grupo Terruño Nayarita is a business that organizes the small farms of sustainable coffee production in the state. The group consists of nearly 400 local producers.

7.Magical Towns

Nayarit is blessed with nine Magical Towns —the most for one state in the country. The Magical Towns of Mexico, or Pueblos Magicos, is a government-granted designation given to towns or villages in Mexico that best exemplify aspects of culture, history, tradition, art, food, nature, and beyond. These recognized places have something unique to them that helps to tell the story of the soul of Mexico. Nayarit's Magical Towns include Sayulita, Compostela, Jala, Mexcaltitán, Ahuacatlán, Amatlán de Cañas, Ixtlán del Río,San Blas, and Puerto Balleto (Islas Marías).

8.National Parks

Nayarit is home to three of Mexico's National Parks. The first is Islas Marietas National Park, an archipelago five miles from Punta de Mita made up of two islands, two islets, and several rocky shallows home to endemic and migratory marine and bird life. La Tovara National Park, located in San Blas, is a habitat of estuary and freshwater springs, with canals surrounded by mangroves, vegetation, and brilliant orchids and bromeliads. Finally, Isla Isabel National Park is a virgin coastal paradise known for its panoramic Pacific Ocean views, sea-facing cliffs, and rolling mountains.

9.History

The capital of Nayarit is Tepic, a city whose rich legacy can be seen through its architecture, museums, and traditions. Tepic was founded in 1531 as the capital of the Kingdom of New Galicia, a region that was made up of central, northern, and western Mexico. A visit to Tepic starts downtown in the Plaza de Armas and its Purisima Concepcion Cathedral, built between 1804 and 1896. You will also find the Cruz del Zacate Temple and the Government Palace, which houses murals from Jose Luis Soto. Museums in Tepic include the Regional Museum of Nayarit, as well as the Juan Escutia House-Museum, located in the 18th-century birthplace of this national Mexican hero — among many other museums dedicated to art, archaeology, and history.

10.Adventure Tourism

Nayarit's landscape is the perfect playground for adventure enthusiasts. From epic surf breaks along the Pacific Coast, to hiking, biking, and zip lining, there is no shortage of outdoor adventure to explore in the state. Other fun things to do in Nayarit include rappelling, ATV off-road adventure tours, or a guided backcountry eco-adventure tour aboard a4×4 Mercedes Benz jeep.

11.Luxury

The luxury landscape of Nayarit is one of the most exclusive in Mexico. Luxe legends like Punta Mita have been home to brands like Four Seasons and St. Regis for decades. Up the coastline, the newer, dreamy, elegant Mandarina development has a One&Only resort. Coming soon, Nayarit is expecting a Rosewood Hotel and a Ritz-Carlton Reserve. Nayarit has dozens of boho-chic boutique hotels all up the coastline, as well, particularly in Punta de Mita, Sayulita, and San Pancho.

12.Low-key Living

The overall vibe of Nayarit is to take a step back, embrace the present, and get in touch with nature. You won't find late-night clubs with thumping music, or raucous party bars. Instead, the lifestyle in Nayarit is about toes-in-the-sand dining, cultural connections, or deep dives into history.

13.Beaches

It's impossible to talk about Nayarit and not mention its spectacular beaches. From Nuevo Nayarit up to the border with Sinaloa, the coastline is blessed with some of the best beaches in Mexico. Towns like Bucerias, La Cruz de Huanacaxtle, Punta de Mita, Sayulita, San Pancho, Lo de Marcos, Guayabitos, and San Blas — also known as the Riviera Nayarit — have been drawing sun worshippers, surfers, and beachcombers for decades.

14. Art

Central to Nayarit is the Huichol, or Wixáritari, community. Their artistic traditions are deeply rooted in spirituality, represented through spectacular beadwork. The Huichol artwork takes inspiration from symbolism and the balance of opposites, like the relationship between light and dark or the rainy and dry seasons. You can find Huichol art in galleries and gift shops throughout Nayarit, particularly in the mountain communities as well as the coastal towns and villages.

15.Surfing

With such a stellar coastline comes ample opportunity for world-class surfing. There are seven different surf “breaks” circling the Punta Mita southern peninsula alone, from Anclote to Sayulita. These provide surfers of all skill levels with many options — from zippy reefs to perfect point breaks. Other incredible surf breaks can be found further north in Chacala and San Blas.

16.Crafts/Artisans

Part of the Huichol tradition is creating beautiful crafts. Artisans across the state specialize in a few key crafts that have become integral to the Huichol culture. The Tzicuri, or "God's Eye," is one of the most iconic, symbolizing protection over children. The weave of five interconnected diamonds is seen as a symbol of power and protection. Similarly, the Nerikate are ritual tools rooted in spirituality, made with yarn or beads on large wooden canvases. They represent divine revelation. Finally, Nayarit is known for its alebrijes, vibrant and cheerful surrealistic folk art sculptures that usually take the form of animals.

17.Cultural Capital

Surrounding Tepic are majestic mountains, which hold many of the state's secrets, from its adventure and ecotourism offerings to its Magical Towns and native communities. The town of Amatlán de Cañas, for example, feels paused in time. Surrounded by mountains and sliced by rocky canyons, this town is known for its historic temples. Another at tractionnear Tepic is the Los Toriles archaeological site, home to 93 historics tructures, including a pyramid dedicated to the Aztec god, Quetzalcoatl.

18.Islands

Nayarit is home to some of the most unique islands in Mexico. Islas Marietas National Park, for example, is a protected land home to rich wildlife. Mexcaltitan is a Magical Town island known for its canals that have earned the nickname, "Venice of Mexico." Further out to sea are Islas Marias, a former federal prison now a protected natural environment.

19.Golf

Exclusivity and luxury set the tone for the nine golf courses in the state, designed by legends such as Jack Nicklaus, Greg Norman, Jim Lipe, Percy Clifford, and Robert Von Hagge & Baril. Thesetop-tier golf courses feature spectacular views over the Bay of Banderas and the Pacific Ocean, as well as the beautiful beaches and mountain rainforests of the Sierra Madres.

20. A growing wine scene21.Fashion boutiques

Since its early days, Sayulita has been setting fashion trends for the boho chic crowd along the Riviera Nayarit. Back before Calle Delfin was even paved, it was peppered with funky clothing and jewelry shops. Today, all of Sayulita is essentially an open-air shopper's paradise with an incredible selection of jewelry, clothing, surf wear, swimsuits, pottery, textiles, and souvenirs. On the heels of Sayulita is San Pancho, whose fashion scene is slowly growing to match the offerings and style of its neighbor.

22.Islas Marias

Islas Marias is a true story of transformation and repurposing to create something beautiful. About 80 miles off the coast of San Blas is a string of islands that was once home to one of the most infamous federal prisons in Mexico. Today, however, it is one of UNESCO's natural protected areas and a center for environmental tourism. Accessible only by boat, the protected islands are home to a cultural center, hiking trails, wildlife, and the Pueblo Magico of Puerto Balleto.

23.Festival Gourmet

Nayarit is part of Mexico's explosive culinary scene. This extends far beyond local dishes and casual beach fare — it's part of an elite gourmet gastronomy experience. Each year, Nayarit is one of the hosts of Festival Gourmet International, a world-class food festival spread across dozens of restaurants bringing roughly 75 chefs, events, and thousands of foodies to Riviera Nayarit, Tepic, and Puerto Vallarta.

24.Ease of Access

Nayarit is one of the easiest states to reach from the U.S. and Canada. Visitors to Nayarit can fly into Puerto Vallarta and drive up the coastline. For interior visits to Nayarit, travelers can fly into Guadalajara or Tepic. In 2023 Aeromexico launched its first route between Mexico City and Tepic.

NAYARIT is a state in western Mexico, between the forested mountains of the Sierra Madre Occidental and the Pacific Ocean. It’s more than beaches, however. There are also mountains, volcanos, freshwater lagoons, colonial towns and indigenous people from ethnic groups such as the Coras, Huicholes, Tepehuanos and Mexicaneros. All of whom welcome visitors to buy their crafts and share in their festivities. This area is known as Valle Nayarit. Riviera Nayarit, with its 192 miles of coastline, is home to the colonial city of San Blas, whose 16th-century San Basilio Fort once protected the area from pirates. Just to the south are the surf-friendly beaches of Matanchén Bay, while to the north is the island of Mexcaltián, considered the cradle of Aztec civilization.

Meliá Hotels International plans to open its first Zel hotel in Mexico in 2025 in Sayulita. The new Zen Sayulita will be the international debut of the Spanish hotel brand, featuring 145 rooms.

The already established Riu Palace Pacifico reopened to guests after a complete refurbishment and a conversion into an adults-only hotel. The renovation is accompanied by an expansion of new services, including more gastronomy options, improved experiences, and the Elite Club by RIU.

Its contemporary architecture, inspired by the strength of geometrical shapes and the beauty of regional vegetation, results in spaces full of natural light and refreshing like the sea breeze of the Mexican Pacific.

Romance Travel

Romance travel is one trend that will never go out of style, and Nayarit knows how to set the mood. Velas Resorts is offering a new “Mojiganga Wedding Experience” for couples. Mojigangas, a deeply traditional part of Mexican heritage, are dynamic, gorgeously crafted puppets made from papier-mâché. Often seen in processions, parades, and especially at weddings, mojigangas are said to attract both good fortune and ward off evil. These towering figures stand at more than six feet and require a person inside to manage their movements.

Velas Resorts is bringing the tradition to life by creating bespoke mojigangas that represent the bride and groom, adding a personalized and festive touch to destination weddings. This package is available at its properties in Riviera Nayarit, as well as its other destinations in Mexico.

Elevated Cuisine

The coastal cuisine of Riviera Nayarit is second to none, featuring the freshest seafood, locally sourced produce, and succulent cuts of meat cooked over open flame. What’s more, Nayarit has so many gorgeous settings for those once-in-a-lifetime dining moments.

W Punta de Mita, for example, is now offering a private island dining experience at its all new culinary concept, Mesa1. This secluded venue hosts just one nightly seating on a private island on a table made from a 100-year-old Parota tree. Guests indulge in a customizable seven-course tasting menu that celebrates local flavors. Whether guests are looking for a romantic evening, or an exclusive family gathering, this private venue hits the spot.

Swinging into 2024

One of the primary draws to Riviera Nayarit is its golf offerings, and the golf scene is set to grow in the coming years. Mandarina has announced the plans for a new golf course designed by Greg Norman. As part of the Mandarina Experiences program, the golf club will feature a 10-hole short course consisting of par 3 holes, taking inspiration from holes at famous courses around the world. Think Augusta National, Pebble Beach, Pine Valley, and Royal Melbourne. The course is slated for completion in 2025.

Set-Jetting

One of the top travel trends for 2024 is set-jetting, or travel based on popular film and television locations. For travelers who have been hooked to the Bachelor in Paradise, they will recognize the setting as the world-famous Pueblo Magico, Sayulita. Since season 2, Bachelor in Paradise has been filmed at the Playa Escondida Resort.

Visitors can soak up every romantic moment with a visit to the intimate beachfront resort in 2024. The hotel offers activities like horseback riding on the beach, yoga, surfing lessons, paddle boarding, whale and dolphin watching, hiking and bike trails, and golf. Where To Go In 2024: The State Of The Nayarit Offers Dupe Travel Experiences In Mexico

As travelers continue to look for alternatives to the tried-and-true tourist hotspots, the state of Nayarit is one of Mexico’s places to visit in the dupe travel experience.

The State of Nayarit may be most famous for its epic beaches, but a closer look at the region reveals there is so much more to discover. The magic of Mexico can be found all across the state of Nayarit, with its interior at the heart of its beauty. One of Mexico’s Pacific Coast treasures, the state of Nayarit has all the elements that make up a quintessential Mexican experience, and because so much of Nayarit is still off the trodden tourist trail, visitors who venture into the state of Nayarit will find an authenticity and magic that cannot be found elsewhere.

Most travelers have heard of Nayarit’s spectacular coastline. Dubbed “Riviera Nayarit,” this string of beach towns stretches from the Bay of Banderas all the way up the entire state. Beginning with Nuevo Nayarit (once called Nuevo Vallarta), the Riviera Nayarit also includes popular hotel and resort destinations like Bucerias, La Cruz de Huanacaxtle, the luxury enclaves of Punta de Mita, the bohemian hotspot of Sayulita, and the smaller, sleepier villages like San Francisco, Lo de Marcos, Guayabitos, and San Blas.

These beach towns are what put Nayarit on the tourist trail, and where visitors will find the majority of the state’s luxury resorts, boutique beachfront hotels, wellness retreats, and all-inclusives. But the state of Nayarit is so much more than just its stunning coastline. It’s also a hot spot for gastronomy tourism, eco-tourism, adventure, and cultural exchange.

Away from the beach and into the mountainous, jungle-covered interior of Nayarit, a world waiting to be discovered unfolds. Nayarit is home to thick jungles and looming volcanoes, pockets of indigenous communities, unique cuisine, Magical Towns and diverse wildlife.

The capital of Nayarit is Tepic, a city whose rich legacy can be seen through its architecture, museums, and traditions. Tepic was founded in 1531 as the capital of the Kingdom of New Galicia, a region that was made up of what is now Jalisco, Colima, Nayarit, Aguascalientes, Durango, Sinaloa, and San Luis Potosi. It was a major center for trade, commerce, and European society. A walk around downtown Tepic is like taking a step back in time to its Spanish-influenced past.

A visit to Tepic starts downtown in the Plaza de Armas and its Purisima Concepcion Cathedral, built between 1804 and 1896. Visitors will also find the Cruz del Zacate Temple and the Government Palace, which houses murals from Jose Luis Soto. Museums in Tepic include the Regional Museum of Nayarit, as well as the Juan Escutia House-Museum, located in the 18th-century birthplace of this national Mexican hero — among many other museums dedicated to art, archaeology, history, and beyond.

Visitors to Tepic can also visit former haciendas, like San Cayetano built in the early 18th century, the Bellavista textile factory, the Hacienda de Puga, and the Hacienda de Mora.

Stepping away from Tepic, visitors come face to face with the state’s natural beauty as well as its indigenous cultures. Surrounding Tepic are majestic mountains, which hold many of the state's secrets, from its adventure and ecotourism offerings to its Magical Towns and native communities. The town of Amatlán de Cañas, for example, feels paused in time. Surrounded by mountains and sliced by rocky canyons, this town is known for its historic temples and its many hot springs spas, as well as three beautiful waterfalls. Another attraction near Tepic is the Los Toriles archaeological site, home to 93 historic structures, including a pyramid dedicated to the Aztec god, Quetzalcoatl.

For culture seekers, Nayarit has four very distinct and special Magical Towns. This includes the world-renowned bohemian beach community of Sayulita, as well as the towns of Compostela, Jala, and Mexcaltitán.

Compostela is a rich epicenter of coffee culture and a visit here means getting up close and personal with some of Mexico's finest coffee. Visitors interested in learning about coffee culture can also combine a visit to Compostela with jungle activities like rafting, cycling, and hiking.

Travelers who want to learn more about the indigenous communities of Nayarit can head to the Sierra del Nayar, a region of Nayarit characterized by mountain ranges, jungle, and native communities who have kept their traditions and customs alive.

The event features men painted in body paint from head to toe, fighting ritual battles with wooden swords, dances, feasting, and much more.

The State of Nayarit became Mexico’s latest Viticulture destination expanding Mexico’s Wine Region with the opening of Meseta del Cielo vineyard. Located in Juanactlan in the Municipality of Jala at 1900 meters above sea level, the vineyard is the first one in the state of Nayarit with more than four hectares of land where Syrah and Macabeo grapes adapt to perfection in its soil.

For wildlife lovers, a visit to Tepic can end back at the coast in the beach village of San Blas. Characterized by its mangroves and protected areas, San Blas has been a haven for birdwatching for decades. It's one of Nayarit's best examples of sustainable tourism, with eco-conscious hotels and activities at its focus, thus creating a rich and abundant community of wildlife.

The Islas Marías (Las Tres Marías) are a small archipelago of islands located in the eastern Pacific Ocean, lying at a distance of 58 miles from the coast of Mexico's Nayarit state. The island chain was mostly uninhabited except for the Maria Madre Island, which until 2019 held a prison. In 2010 the Islas Marías was designated as a UNESCO biosphere reserve, a specially protected biodiverse region. The Tres Marías Islands are home to a diverse array of flora and fauna, including the Tres Marías raccoon and the Tres Marías cottontail rabbit. The reserve is a prime spot for whale shark watching and is an important nesting and feeding site for large colonies of sea birds, sharks, and sea turtles.

Other news for 2024

The airport, Riviera Nayarit Airport (TPQ), is now Riviera Nayarit International Airport, creating border and customs operations that will allow flights from other countries to fly in directly.

New hotel openings in 2023 and 2024 take in such brands as Vidanta, Fairmont, Rosewood, Westin, Omni, Four Seasons Autograph Collection and more Marriott developments. The Rosewood Mandarina is set to open in 2024. A Ritz-Carlton Reserve is expected to open by 2025. Montage International is working on the development of both a Montage and a Pendry resort within the 1,500-acre, private peninsula masterplan in Punta Mita with a target of 2026.
