LEGOLAND Debuts Dinosaurs

LEGOLAND California is ready to roar in ’24: Not only is the park in coastal Carlsbad celebrating its 25th birthday (aka “brickday”), but it will open a new themed area called Dino Valley as well as hosting North America’s very first LEGO World Parade. Dino Valley will include two brand-new rides as well as plenty of interactive features for young visitors.

SeaWorld’s Jellyfish Showcase

SeaWorld San Diego, which has been remaking its patron experience over the past few years with numerous new rides and attractions, is adding another twist in 2024: An aquarium called Jewels of the Sea: The Jellyfish Experience. With its walk-through arch and giant viewing wall, the aquarium promises to be as immersive as things can get without actually swimming alongside the jellies.

Botanical Building Reborn

One of the most distinctive structures in San Diego’s beautiful Balboa Park, the Botanical Building was built in 1915 and is recognized as one of the largest wood lath structures in the world. This home to hundreds of rare, tropical and indigenous plants has undergone a major reconstruction intended to restore the building to its original design, and will reopen in 2024.

A Big Birthday for The Nat

World Design Capital a Binational Coup

Two years after San Diego and Tijuana jointly received designation as World Design Capital 2024 — a major global honor — the yearlong WDC24 celebration is about to kick off. San Diego is the first U.S. city to be named or co-named World Design Capital, and the city teamed with its cross-border neighbor of Tijuana, Mexico, to beat out Moscow (the other finalist) for that distinction. Now the two cities will mark WDC24 with an extended series of events and happenings centered on the theme of “Home.” The WDC designation helped inspire AFAR Magazine to include San Diego and Tijuana in its “Where to Go in 2024” roundup of “the 25 most exciting places around the world to visit next.”

Wonderfront Festival Tunes Up Again

After taking a hiatus in 2023, the sprawling Wonderfront Music & Arts Festival will again unfold along San Diego’s sparkling Embarcadero, with three days of music, food and fun. The fest, last held in 2022 with headliners including Gwen Stefani and Kings of Leon, is moving from its previous November slot to a new time frame (dates and artists have yet to be announced).

Concours d’Elegance a Vehicle for Dreams

The art of exquisite automotive design will get a world-class showcase here in 2024 —with a breathtaking setting to match — as the La Jolla Concours d’Elegance unfolds at La Jolla Cove in April. From a “Porsches on Prospect” sports-car extravaganza to chic VIP happenings to the vintage spritz of the event’s “Roaring ‘20s and Glamorous ‘30s” theme, the Concours d’Elegance promises to be a car-lover's nirvana. Music Returns to Copley Symphony Hall

Historic Copley Symphony Hall — the longtime indoor home of the San Diego Symphony — will stage its much-awaited reopening in 2024 after a $125 million renovation. Improvements to the nearly 100-year-old Downtown performance space (formerly the Fox Theatre) include a reconfigured stage, a reshaped main seating level, improved acoustics and more.

KAABOO Gets an Encore

A visit to Tepic starts downtown in the Plaza de Armas and its Purisima Concepcion Cathedral, built between 1804 and 1896. Visitors will also find the Cruz del Zacate Temple and the Government Palace, which houses murals from Jose Luis Soto. Museums in Tepic include the Regional Museum of Nayarit, as well as the Juan Escutia House-Museum, located in the 18th-century birthplace of this national Mexican hero — among many other museums dedicated to art, archaeology, history, and beyond.

Visitors to Tepic can also visit former haciendas, like San Cayetano built in the early 18th century, the Bellavista textile factory, the Hacienda de Puga, and the Hacienda de Mora.

Stepping away from Tepic, visitors come face to face with the state’s natural beauty as well as its indigenous cultures. Surrounding Tepic are majestic mountains, which hold many of the state's secrets, from its adventure and ecotourism offerings to its Magical Towns and native communities. The town of Amatlán de Cañas, for example, feels paused in time. For culture seekers, Nayarit has four very distinct and special Magical Towns. This includes the world-renowned bohemian beach community of Sayulita, as well as the towns of Compostela, Jala, and Mexcaltitán.

Compostela is a rich epicenter of coffee culture and a visit here means getting up close and personal with some of Mexico's finest coffee. Visitors interested in learning about coffee culture can also combine a visit to Compostela with jungle activities like rafting, cycling, and hiking.

Travelers who want to learn more about the indigenous communities of Nayarit can head to the Sierra del Nayar, a region of Nayarit characterized by mountain ranges, jungle, and native communities who have kept their traditions and customs alive. The groups that settled in the Sierra del Nayar are the Coras, Huicholes, Tepehuanos, and Mexicaneros.

A visit to the community of El Nayar is the best place to learn about these communities. The main ethnic groups here are the Cora and Huichol and their Holy Week has been designated an Intangible World Heritage by UNESCO. The event features men painted in body paint from head to toe, fighting ritual battles with wooden swords, dances, feasting, and much more.

The State of Nayarit became Mexico’s latest Viticulture destination expanding Mexico’s Wine Region with the opening of Meseta del Cielo vineyard. Located in Juanactlan in the Municipality of Jala at 1900 meters above sea level, the vineyard is the first one in the state of Nayarit with more than four hectares of land where Syrah and Macabeo grapes adapt to perfection in its soil.

For wildlife lovers, a visit to Tepic can end back at the coast in the beach village of San Blas. Characterized by its mangroves and protected areas, San Blas has been a haven for birdwatching for decades. The Islas Marías (Las Tres Marías) are a small archipelago of islands located in the eastern Pacific Ocean, lying at a distance of 58 miles from the coast of Mexico's Nayarit state. In 2010 the Islas Marías was designated as a UNESCO biosphere reserve, a specially protected biodiverse region. The airport, Riviera Nayarit Airport (TPQ), is now Riviera Nayarit International Airport, creating border and customs operations that will allow flights from other countries to fly in directly.

Flair and Aeromexico are set to enhance travel options to and from Guadalajara with the introduction of new routes from the United States and Canada. Beginning May 31, 2024, Canadian low-cost carrierFlair will revive a route last operated in 2004, providing direct service between Vancouver (YVR) and GDL.
