Cruise Lines Use Technology To Add The Personal Touch #Cruise

The companies are adding apps to speed boarding and wearable medallions that serve as passenger IDs, charge cards and location beacons.

Global cruise lines are rolling out new technology to help servers deliver cocktails to passengers who have wandered off, address travelers by name on ships carrying thousands of passengers and shrink the boarding process to 10 minutes from one hour. The companies say they are using technology to reduce the most common passenger complaints and make these huge floating vacation cities feel more personal.
Many ships now offer a mobile app to help guests pay for purchases, learn about daily activities, make special requests and communicate with other members of their travel party. Some, like Carnival Corporation, Disney Cruise Line, Royal Caribbean Cruises and the Geneva-based cruise company MSC, are beginning to pair them with wearable devices that can better track the passenger’s exact location on the ship and offer additional conveniences. Andy Stuart, brand president of Norwegian Cruise Line, said it introduced a new version of its app for passengers fleetwide January, and will roll out its first wearable device next fall.
The technology trend coincides with a period of growth in the industry. About 27 million people took a cruise in 2018, up from 20.5 million in 2013, according to Monty Mathisen, managing editor of Cruise Industry News. “We will see some 40 million cruise passengers by 2028, easily,” he said. Carnival Corporation, which owns nine lines and represents about half of the global cruise industry in number of passengers, has ordered 20 ships to be delivered by the end of 2025.
Passengers see the technology first on the newest and biggest ships, said Mr. Mathisen, although “the cruise lines are busy rolling them back to the rest of their fleet.”

The surge is partly thanks to increased computing power on the vessels themselves. Ships now “have better data centers, satellite connectivity and IT staff on board,” said Manny Vellon, chief technology officer of the software and consulting company, Level 11, that worked with Carnival to create its wearable OceanMedallion.
Here are some of the ways companies hope to address the most common complaints:
It Takes Too Long to Check In
Customers have long complained about the check-in process, which can require standing in lines for passport presentation, photo-taking and excursion booking. This can stretch sometimes to an hour or more, according to Jay Schneider, senior vice president for digital at Royal Caribbean International, which owns Celebrity Cruises and other lines. The goal now is to get passengers “from car to bar in 10 minutes,” he said. Passengers on all 25 Royal Caribbean and 13 Celebrity Cruises ships can now use a mobile app to scan their passport, take a security selfie and receive a digital boarding pass before they even arrive at the ship.
I Want to Order a Drink, but Can’t Find a Waiter
A passenger with Carnival’s OceanMedallion can order a drink using a mobile app, and the medallion tells the server the person’s name and location, even if they have moved, said John Padgett, Carnival’s chief experience and innovation officer. The waterproof device acts as identification, charge card and location beacon. Two ships in the Princess Cruises fleet, which is owned by Carnival, offer the medallion and three more will offer it in 2019.
I Feel Anonymous on This Big Ship
Wearables can allow crew members using a mobile device to view the name of the person approaching them so they can greet the passenger by name. That’s a level of service expected on the most expensive cruises, “but we can make that available to all passengers,” Mr. Padgett said.

They Aren’t Playing Our Song
Passengers wearing an OceanMedallion carry the information they’ve chosen to share with the cruise line wherever they go. “When our guitarist sees that people from Colorado are in her audience and she plays John Denver music, it’s like magic happening,” Mr. Padgett said.

This Bar Is Too Crowded
Using a heat map to see where guests are congregating and how many crew members are there can help determine staffing levels, said David DeCurtis, chief executive of the DeCurtis Corporation, which creates customer-experience software for cruise ships, malls, airports and hospitals. If there’s a crowd at one bar and another is empty, staff can be shifted.
What Happens in an Emergency?
The ability to track passengers is critical during an emergency, Mr. DeCurtis said. During an evacuation, the crew can use location software to see who is heading to assembly stations; who are still in their rooms; which passengers have special needs and might need help; and whether children are with or without their parents.
I Just Want Everything to Be Easy
The newest onboard apps encompass the passenger experience from planning the trip through commemorating it. That could include booking dining and excursions, swiping through the day’s itinerary and dining menus, or receiving a personalized book of photos at the end of the voyage. Some cruise companies, like Holland America Line, offer kiosks on board with many of the same functions.
The new technologies also help the bottom line, Mr. Vellon said. When passengers plan their journey before leaving, they sign up to do more on the ship, he said, and because many future cruises are booked by passengers on current ones, improving service would also drive sales.

MIAMI– Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. (NYSE: RCL) has officially opened Terminal A, the largest cruise port in the U.S., in collaboration with Miami-Dade County. The new terminal will be a striking addition to PortMiami and will serve as homeport to Royal Caribbean International ships such as Symphony of the Seas and Allure of the Seas, two of the world’s largest and most innovative cruise ships.

“Terminal A is an important milestone in the growth of the cruise industry in South Florida and underscores our commitment to Miami, where our company was founded almost 50 years ago,” said Richard D. Fain, CEO and Chairman of Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd.

“We are thrilled to announce the opening of Terminal A, the largest cruise port in the U.S. and would like to thank Royal Caribbean for their continued support of the Miami community,” said Carlos A. Giménez, Mayor of Miami- Dade County. “With the opening of Terminal A, we are excited to welcome even more visitors to Miami,” said Giménez.

PortMiami currently serves 750,000 Royal Caribbean passengers annually, representing roughly 15% of the port’s overall passenger traffic. Because of the new terminal, Royal Caribbean expects to increase its Miami passenger intake to nearly 2 million annually. This will make PortMiami Royal Caribbean’s largest cruise port in the U.S., solidifying PortMiami’s status as the Cruise Capital of the World.

“We look forward to all the new and exciting developments the opening of Terminal A will bring to our cruise lines, our guests, and the Miami community. We are proud that our Oasis class vessels, each hosting more than 5,000 guests, will now be able to call on PortMiami,” said Michael Bayley, President and CEO of Royal Caribbean International.

Terminal A will accommodate the passengers of two of the world’s largest ships in the Oasis class, the new Symphony of the Seas and her sister, Allure of the Seas. The new LEED certified facility, which is the largest and most modern cruise facility in the U.S., has leveraged new technologies to enhance the waiting areas and boarding experience of guests. Overall, the design evokes the points in Royal Caribbean’s crown and anchor logo when viewed from the water; the ‘M’ of Miami when viewed from the east or western approaches; and a sense of waves rising or ships passing when viewed from the terminal side. As a result, the terminal will serve as a dynamic addition to the Miami skyline.

Royal Caribbean Announces Agreement To Build World-Class Cruise Terminal At PortMiami

New, iconic cruise terminal - Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd.’s (RCL) new, iconic terminal at PortMiami will be home to an Oasis class ship. The iconic building is slated for late 2018.

Cruise Line Plans to Sail an Oasis-Class Ship Out of the State-Of-The-Art Terminal
Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. (NYSE: RCL) has announced an agreement with Miami-Dade County to construct and operate a dramatic new cruise terminal at PortMiami, on land leased from the County. The new terminal will be a striking addition to PortMiami, and will serve as homeport to Royal Caribbean International ships, including a 5,400-passenger Oasis-class ship, the world’s largest and most innovative cruise ships. The agreement will come before the Miami-Dade County Board of County Commissioners on July 6, 2016.

“We are truly excited to be working with Miami-Dade County and PortMiami to create not just another cruise terminal, but a truly iconic building,” said Richard D. Fain, chairman and CEO for Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. “This new terminal is a symbol of our commitment to Miami, the city where our company first started almost 50 years ago. We can’t wait to bring an Oasis-class ship to PortMiami.”

“Miami-Dade County is happy to welcome Royal Caribbean’s expansion at PortMiami, and all the economic benefits that come along with it," said Carlos Gimenez, Miami-Dade County Mayor. “This public-private partnership will have an estimated economic impact of $500 million and generate approximately 4,000 jobs. Royal Caribbean has been an important part of our world-class community for almost 50 years, and this expansion will once again make PortMiami Royal Caribbean’s largest cruise port in the world. I thank them for their continued investment in and commitment to Miami-Dade.”

Broadway Malyan has been selected as the firm to design the new terminal, after a global competition was held between five of the world's leading architectural firms. The firm was selected because of their creative thinking and cutting-edge design.

The 170,000-square-foot terminal is nicknamed the ‘Crown of Miami’ because of its distinct shape.   The design evokes the points of the symbolic headgear when viewed from the water; the ‘M’ of Miami when viewed from the east or western approaches; and a sense of waves rising or ships passing when viewed from the terminal side. At night, the terminal’s facade will be lit ensuring that the building makes a striking impression and providing a dynamic addition to the PortMiami landscape.

The new terminal will not be the only addition for Royal Caribbean in the coming year. The company has committed to add a 20,000-square-foot Innovation Lab to its corporate headquarters located at PortMiami. The Innovation Lab will continue to generate Royal Caribbean’s industry-leading, innovative vessels.

Currently, PortMiami welcomes approximately 750,000 Royal Caribbean passengers annually, representing about 15 percent of its overall passenger traffic. Once the new cruise terminal is completed, it is anticipated that Royal Caribbean will generate at least 1.8 million passengers at PortMiami – representing no less than 30 percent of the port’s projected passenger traffic.

Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. (NYSE: RCL) is a global cruise vacation company that owns Royal Caribbean International, Celebrity Cruises, Pullmantur, Azamara Club Cruises and CDF Croisières de France, as well as TUI Cruises through a 50 percent joint venture. Together, these six brands operate a combined total of 47 ships with an additional twelve on order. They operate diverse itineraries around the world that call on approximately 490 destinations on all seven continents. Additional information can be found on, www.rclcorporate.com.

Royal Caribbean Testing Additional Charges For ID Wristbands On Cruise Ships

Royal Caribbean International has begun charging $4.99 on the Anthem of the Seas for radio-frequency identification (RFID) wristbands.

Branded Wow bands by Royal Caribbean, the colored, rubberized wristbands are a substitute for SeaPass key cards.

Royal said the charge is a test of a new pricing strategy for the bands, which had been distributed for free up to now on Quantum-class ships.

Using the bands, passengers can access their cabins and pay for onboard purchases.

Royal had discussed a $2 charge for the bands when they were introduced on Quantum of the Seas, but it was never implemented.

Guests in Junior Suites and above on Anthem will continue to get the bands free in their staterooms upon boarding, Royal said.

Tiffany & Co. today announced its first ever free-standing boutique at sea onboard Royal Caribbean International’s Oasis of the Seas. The store is located in the ship’s lush Central Park neighborhood and will offer a full selection of Tiffany jewelry, including engagement rings and the recently introduced Tiffany T and Atlas collections, as well as Swiss made CT60 watches.

“We are delighted that Royal Caribbean guests will now have the opportunity to explore Tiffany’s legendary collections in an environment of luxury and service that is unique among the world’s premier jewelers,” said Luciano Rodembusch, vice president of Tiffany & Co. Latin America.  “For 178 years we have been creating the most beautiful love stories and Oasis of the Seas offers a unique and memorable setting.”

The Tiffany & Co. boutique [to be operated by Royal Caribbean International] will extend 875 square feet and feature meticulous attention to detail and noble materials, including marble, glossy lacquers, polished metals, cerused walnut paneling, velvet drapery and upholstered walls. Tiffany’s rich heritage is a constant source of inspiration, as is Tiffany’s strong connection to the glamour of New York City.

“Nothing can compare to the Oasis-class vacation experience, a testament to Royal Caribbean’s 40 year legacy of innovation,” said Mark Tamis, senior vice president, Hotel Operations, Royal Caribbean International. “Tiffany & Co. is a distinguished global luxury brand and having a boutique on board will truly enrich the premium onboard experience for our guests. From surprising your loved one with a timeless keepsake to popping the question with the perfect engagement ring, what better way to remember a cruise adventure of a lifetime.”

Much like Tiffany’s flagship Fifth Avenue store which is nestled near the lush gardens of Central Park in New York City, the Tiffany & Co. boutique onboard Oasis of the Seas will feel right at home within the ship’s sophisticated neighborhood of the same name.

In addition to the Central Park neighborhood with more than 12,000 live trees and plants, guests onboard Oasis of the Seas can delight in exclusive amenities and concepts throughout the other themed neighborhoods, such as an 82 foot-long zip line, a handcrafted carousel, the Rising Tide elevating bar, Broadway musicals and the Aquatheater high-diving performance venue. Oasis of the Seas also offers amenities that can only be found on Royal Caribbean, such as twin FlowRider surf simulators, cantilevered whirlpools, an ice-skating rink, the H20 Zone kids aquapark, and the Royal Promenade, an interior boulevard that stretches nearly the length of the ship and is flanked by restaurants, lounges and boutiques, among many others.

Guests can sail on the world’s largest ship – the Caribbean’s most innovative – on seven-night Eastern and Western Caribbean itineraries from Port Everglades in Ft. Lauderdale. In fall 2016, Oasis of the Seas will begin sailing from Port Canaveral, alternating a seven-night Eastern and Western Caribbean itinerary.

Travelore Cruise News: Royal Caribbean Plans Huge New PortMiami Cruise Terminal

New Royal Caribbean terminal at PortMiami would be located at the northeast side of the facility, to the left of the berths pictured here (Photo: PortMiami)New Royal Caribbean terminal at PortMiami would be located at the northeast side of the facility, to the left of the berths pictured here (Photo: PortMiami)

Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. is in talks with Miami-Dade County officials to build a $100m cruise terminal at PortMiami with a berth capable of handling ships up to 400 meters long—plenty ample for a 360-meter Oasis-class vessel.
'We can't park our biggest ships in Miami and, with a project like this, we could. So this opens lots of possibilities,' Royal Caribbean spokesman Rob Zeiger told Seatrade Cruise News.
According to county documents, the cruise operator would design, finance and build the new Cruise Terminal A on a 10-acre site at the northeastern end of the port, in an area that is partly now used for cargo operations.
The facility, to include a multi-tier parking garage with approximately 1,000 spaces, would become operational in the second half of 2018.
PortMiami anticipates Royal Caribbean would invest well over $100m during the construction phase of the project and the port will invest several million dollars.
Zeiger could not confirm the $100m figure but said that would put the terminal among the company's most costly infrastructure investments. He added it's too early to talk about design details. The timeline, he acknowledged, is very short—the memorandum of understanding talks about a July 31, 2018 target completion date—but 'We think we can build this as fast as we can build a ship.'
Zeiger called the plans a vote of confidence for South Florida, adding that he doesn't anticipate any port to be a loser in a situation like this in view of the company's newbuild orderbook. Royal Caribbean has a 'really great relationship with Port Everglades,' which was 'able to execute for Oasis and Allure,' he noted, in building the $75m Terminal 18.
'It feels good when we can grow anywhere and make an economic impact. It feels especially good when it's in our hometown,' Zeiger added.
The ground lease would have an initial 20-year term, with Royal Caribbean holding an option to extend for up to four additional terms of 10 years each.
Base rent for the facility would be $9.5m a year, with a 1.5% increase compounded annually. In addition, the county would receive $5.50 per passenger move for every Royal Caribbean passenger in excess of 1.55m passenger moves each year at Cruise Terminal A.
Before 2009, PortMiami averaged more than 1.6m Royal Caribbean passengers annually. Subsequently Miami lost a majority of the cruise giant's business when the new Oasis of the Seas and Allure of the Seas began operating year-round at Port Everglades.
At the time, Miami didn't have facilities capable of accommodating these ships nor did it have suitable expansion plans.
PortMiami currently handles about 730,000 Royal Caribbean passengers a year, about 15% of the port's overall passenger traffic. The cruise operator's contractual guarantee to the county is only 325,000 passengers a year for the preferential use of Cruise Terminal G, at the northwestern end of the port.
Under the PortMiami 2035 Master Plan, adopted in late 2010, eight cruise berths are envisioned along the north channel—six existing berths, plus two new berths. The new berths, called Cruise Terminal A and Cruise Terminal AA, would be the last possible facilities on the port's north side.
According to county documents, the master plan is to incorporate requirements and logistical flows for Cruise Terminal AA to ensure it and Cruise Terminal A are 'separate but compatible.'
Additional matters to be negotiated include a possible option for Royal Caribbean to construct and potentially use and operate Cruise Terminal AA. Discussions about amending the cruise operator's Terminal G terms and additional extension options for the Royal Caribbean corporate offices at the port would be negotiated, too.
County commissioners are to consider a memorandum of understanding with Royal Caribbean for the new cruise terminal at a commission meeting on Sept. 16.
