Royal Caribbean Cruises Announces New Ships And Private Islands

The cruise line Royal Caribbean International this week announced a slate of improvements: more private island experiences, modernization of existing ships and five new ships.

The brand’s new Perfect Day Island Collection kicks off at its private CocoCay island in the Bahamas in 2019. New attractions there include overwater cabanas, zip line and water park. Other private destinations are planned for Asia, Australia and elsewhere in the Caribbean.

Royal Caribbean’s newest ship Symphony of the Seas debuts this month. Five more Royal Caribbean ships will launch between 2019 and 2024.

Also planned: a $900 million modernization of 10 existing ships over four years, adding experiential dining, nightlife and attractions like virtual reality.

Finally, three- and four-night trips from Miami will launch as quick getaways designed to appeal to younger cruisers.

It was a historic day for Royal Caribbean International on April 24th when the cruise line made its inaugural visit to Cuba with the newly revitalized Empress of the Seas as part of a 5-night sailing from Miami. Terminal A will be a striking addition to PortMiami, serving as homeport to several Royal Caribbean International ships, including two of the world’s largest and most innovative cruise ships – Allure of the Seas and the newly announced Symphony of the Seas.

Once completed in October 2018, Terminal A will be LEED certified and accommodate a 1,300-foot long ship. Terminal A will not be the only addition for Royal Caribbean this year, RCL has added a 20,000-square-foot Innovation Lab to its corporate headquarters. Currently, PortMiami welcomes approximately 750,000 Royal Caribbean passengers annually, representing about 15 percent of its overall passenger traffic. Royal Caribbean Approved To Begin Cuba Service

Cruise line company will offer multiple itineraries; Florida-Havana routes are being planned

 Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. (NYSE: RCL)  announced that the Cuban government has granted approval for the company to begin cruises to Cuba. The company said it plans to announce its first Florida-Cuba itineraries in the near future.

“Our guests have expressed real interest in having the opportunity to experience Cuba, and we look forward to bringing them there," said Richard D. "Our discussions with our travel partners indicate that Cuba is a destination that appeals to a new generation of travelers.” 
Two RCL lines, Royal Caribbean International and Azamara Club Cruises, will provide guests with travel directly to Cuba for the purpose of providing people-to-people exchanges between guests and Cuban citizens and other travel permitted by current U.S. regulations.

Royal Caribbean Offers Cruise To Boston Cab Driver Who Returned $187K

The story of a cab driver who found and returned an $187,000 inheritance that was left in his cab quickly went viral this week—especially when news hit that he received a $100 tip in return. According to the Boston Globe, Raymond “Buzzy” MacCausland picked up a passenger who was moving from a homeless shelter to a local hotel. The passenger exited the cab but accidentally left a backpack behind. When MacCausland opened the bag to look for identification, he only saw large bundles of cash instead—and he headed straight to the local police station.

MacCausland helped police return the money to its rightful owner, who was using it to get back on his feet. While stray commenters and acquaintances marveled that he’d give back such an impressive sum, it’s not out of character for MacCausland: he’s returned keys, wallets, cellphones—and even a briefcase carrying $10,000.

 Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. (NYSE: RCL) has announced an agreement with Miami-Dade County to construct and operate a dramatic new cruise terminal at PortMiami, on land leased from the County. The new terminal will be a striking addition to PortMiami, and will serve as homeport to Royal Caribbean International ships, including a 5,400-passenger Oasis-class ship, the world’s largest and most innovative cruise ships. The agreement will come before the Miami-Dade County Board of County Commissioners on July 6, 2016.

The 170,000-square-foot terminal is nicknamed the ‘Crown of Miami’ because of its distinct shape.   The design evokes the points of the symbolic headgear when viewed from the water; the ‘M’ of Miami when viewed from the east or western approaches; and a sense of waves rising or ships passing when viewed from the terminal side. At night, the terminal’s facade will be lit ensuring that the building makes a striking impression and providing a dynamic addition to the PortMiami landscape. 

The new terminal will not be the only addition for Royal Caribbean in the coming year. The company has committed to add a 20,000-square-foot Innovation Lab to its corporate headquarters located at PortMiami. The Innovation Lab will continue to generate Royal Caribbean’s industry-leading, innovative vessels. 

Currently, PortMiami welcomes approximately 750,000 Royal Caribbean passengers annually, representing about 15 percent of its overall passenger traffic. Once the new cruise terminal is completed, it is anticipated that Royal Caribbean will generate at least 1.8 million passengers at PortMiami – representing no less than 30 percent of the port’s projected passenger traffic.

Royal Caribbean International’s Harmony of the Seas Makes Her World Debut, Featuring the Tallest Slide at Sea, The Ultimate Abyss

The port of Southampton, U.K. was bustling as onlookers gathered to be among the first to see the world’s largest cruise ship, Harmony of the Seas, upon her first arrival into port. After 32 months of construction, the ship’s arrival marks a major milestone for Royal Caribbean International as Harmony becomes the 25th ship in the fleet.

The newest addition to the family combines the distinct seven-neighborhood concept that Royal Caribbean’s Oasis class of ships are known for with a lineup of the most modern and groundbreaking vacation amenities. Harmony of the Seas will sail from Southampton, U.K. on a series of short getaways to Northern Europe before embarking on her maiden cruise on May 29, arriving in Barcelona, Spain on June 5. The Canada And New England 2016 Cruise Season Begins

 The Canada and New England cruise season for 2016 began over the weekend as Holland America Line’s Veendam arrived in Halifax on April 30 according to Seatrade Cruise News. This year, the Atlantic Canada Cruise Association (ACCA) expects around 611,000 guests, up from 550,651 in 2015.
Nora Fever, chair of ACCA is quoted as saying, “The cruise sector in Atlantic Canada continues to be strong. We are delighted to be welcoming so many passengers during a season that stretches from late April to early November.”

The Veendam continued on to Sydney on May 1 and was in Charlottetown yesterday, May 2. Other ships on the schedule this year include the return of the Disney Cruise Line with the Disney Magic and inaugural calls from Norwegian Cruise Line’s Norwegian Breakaway and Royal Caribbean International’s Anthem of the Seas. Plus, Viking Ocean Cruises’ Viking Star will head to the region for the first time later in September.
Also, additional ports will see traffic this year with Summerside, PEI, for instance, receiving cruise calls for its first time. Overall, ACCA anticipates that cruise visitors will account for $41 million in direct spending and the local industry, including cruise line spending, as a whole will amount to $81.6 million in 2016.

Since it's not a year-round destination like Alaska, Canada/New England is a relatively niche region that certainly benefits seasonally as new ships come online and get bigger with greater visitor capacities. In fact, the aforementioned Anthem of the Seas can accommodate over 4,180 passengers, while the Explorer of the Seas – the largest ship ever to visit Alaska, (going for the first time this year) – has a somewhat smaller guest complement of 4,029.

MSC And Royal Caribbean Rolling Out New Internet Options

As demand for Internet at sea increases, MSC Cruises and Royal Caribbean International are beginning to offer new tiered plans that better pair capability with affordability.
Over the next several months, MSC Cruises is rolling out dynamic high-bandwidth Internet connections and new pricing packages fleet-wide, and they are already available on MSC Divina and MSC Preziosa. The line cites resources of “several hundred Mbit/s (megabits per second) available in the Marlink Sealink cloud” across three plans.

The Social Package is ideal for accessing networks like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, and Pinterest on one device for $4.50 per day or $16.50 per seven-night cruise. The Surfer Package is designed for moderate use of social networks and basic browsing and email access on up to two devices for $11 per day or $33 per seven-night cruise. The Streamer Package opens up full speeds for all browsing and even streaming on up to four devices for $22 per day or $66 per seven-night cruise.
“We are constantly seeking new ways to innovate and enhance guest experience aboard what is already the most modern fleet at sea,” said Gianni Onorato, MSC Cruises CEO. “We know that staying connected while on vacation is increasingly more important to our guests, hence we are rolling out state-of-the-art technology to allow them to stay connected, whether they are looking to share experiences and memorable moments, stay in touch with friends and family, stay on top of work emails or simply catch up with daily news.”

As for Royal Caribbean International, the Royal Caribbean Blog is reporting that the line has expanded its high-speed Voom service from one plan to several tiers as well, offering two bandwidths priced according to device count. The Voom Surf Voyage Package is good for browsing and email and social media access. It starts at $9.99 per day for one device. The Voom Surf + Stream Voyage Package adds in enough speed to facilitate all the above and streaming services. The upgraded plan starts at $12.99 per day for a single device.
Currently, Royal Caribbean’s website indicates Voom is available only on Oasis- and Quantum-class ships in the Caribbean, Mediterranean or Asia, but the Royal Caribbean Blog also said that the high-bandwidth service is expected to expand fleet-wide by this month.
Of course, in practice, speeds at sea are variable and often throttle down when more guests are logged on simultaneously. As to which offers the best value often depends on the user experience, which can vary accordingly. Where the packages on either line succeed most is in their unlimited nature. As speeds fluctuate, the time in which it takes to perform any given action online also changes. So, at least that variation does not count against daily or cruise time allotments like it would on lines that offer packages by the minute.
