The Port of Philadelphia Announces Groundbreaking of New PhilaPort Cruise Terminal

PhilaPort has announced the start of construction of the future PhilaPort Cruise Terminal, a 16-acre site adjacent to Philadelphia International Airport that will serve as the region’s newest gateway for cruise travel beginning in April 2026.

The terminal’s inaugural season will begin during a historic year. As the United States celebrates its 250th anniversary in 2026, Philadelphia will host a wide range of nationally significant events and tourism experiences. Launching Norwegian Cruise Line’s seasonal sailings to Bermuda and other destinations during this commemorative year will give travelers a new way to experience both the city’s deep maritime heritage and its vibrant modern culture.

“This is a unique opportunity, and we are fortunate to have two outstanding partners in Energy Transfer and Norwegian Cruise Line, both of whom see tremendous potential in Philadelphia,” said Jeff Theobald, PhilaPort Executive Director and CEO. “It took a lot of hard work to bring this agreement together, and Energy Transfer and Norwegian Cruise Line were committed every step of the way. We have a lot of hard work ahead of us, but we are ready and excited to welcome cruise passengers this spring.”

The new terminal is the result of coordinated efforts and partnership among PhilaPort, Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings, and Energy Transfer Marketing and Terminals (ETMT). PhilaPort and ETMT have finalized the agreement of sale of property for the site in Tinicum Township, formerly known as the Hog Island Dock Terminal Facility, clearing the way for its redevelopment. PhilaPort will manage all marine-side improvements, while NCLH will lead the land-side construction and development of the terminal. Under a seven-year berthing agreement running from April 15, 2026 through March 31, 2033, NCLH’s cruise brands will operate as Philadelphia’s exclusive homeport with an initial commitment of 41 sailings per year.

Cruise operations at the new terminal are projected to generate 2,185 direct and indirect jobs and approximately $300 million in annual economic output throughout the Commonwealth, supporting labor-intensive services that contribute to regional economic well-being.

“Philadelphia’s debut as our newest homeport marks a strategic milestone for Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings and our three award-winning brands, Norwegian Cruise Line, Oceania Cruises, and Regent Seven Seas Cruises,” said Daniel S. Farkas, Executive Vice President, General Counsel and Chief Development Officer at Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings. “Together with PhilaPort, we’re expanding access to exceptional cruise experiences, connecting guests to world-class destinations with the convenience of sailing from a city rich in American history. As we prepare to launch in 2026, this terminal represents the next wave in our commitment to innovation, regional growth, and delivering an unmatched guest experience from ship to shore.”

Additional information regarding construction schedules, project milestones, and terminal amenities will be shared as development progresses. PhilaPort will release further details to keep the public, cruise passengers, and the travel industry informed as the terminal takes shape.

“The PhilaPort Cruise Terminal will help fulfill a key commitment in our strategic plan, Destination 2040, to make PhilaPort a multi-faceted port rather than one focused solely on cargo. This facility reflects the broader vision for both the city and the port, opening the door to a new chapter of tourism and leisure in Philadelphia,” said Michael Pearson, Chairman of the PhilaPort Board of Directors.

The establishment of the PhilaPort Cruise Terminal underscores the authority’s commitment to driving regional economic development and creating new opportunities for travelers. As the city prepares for America’s 250th anniversary, anticipation is building for a cruising experience that highlights Philadelphia’s maritime past and future. With unique facilities, convenient airport access, and an exciting lineup of destinations, the PhilaPort Cruise Terminal is positioned to become one of the East Coast’s most convenient and compelling places to begin a voyage. Passengers can expect more updates soon, along with an unforgettable new way to Cruise Philly First in 2026.

A New Legacy Begins For Regent Seven Seas Cruises® With First Look Inside Seven Seas Prestige™

Regent Seven Seas Cruises®, the world’s leading ultra luxury cruise line, has unveiled detailed renderings and a spectacular “fly-through” video of select public spaces on board Seven Seas Prestige™. The new images and video of the Starlight Atrium and Galileo’s Bar hint at the exquisite elegance and comfort that will be found on board Seven Seas Prestige, scheduled to launch in late 2026, beginning a new legacy for all-inclusive, ultra luxury cruising.

Drawing on inspiration ranging from classical and Renaissance architecture, both the Starlight Atrium and Galileo’s Bar were designed by Studio DADO, who were also the creative drive behind the cruise line’s highly successful Explorer-Class ships. Now, with Seven Seas Prestige, the DADO team has captured the essence of The Most Inclusive Luxury Experience®, building on Regent’s rich heritage which will inspire guests to embrace each moment with awe and delight.

“With Seven Seas Prestige being Regent’s first new ship class in 10 years, we are delighted to share these first glimpses of this incredible vessel,” said Jason Montague, Chief Luxury Officer for Regent Seven Seas Cruises. “Hosting only 822 guests on a ship that could fit hundreds more means we will offer Heartfelt Hospitality in Unrivaled Space at Sea like never before. I truly cannot wait for this magnificent ship to join The World’s Most Luxurious Fleet and the new legacy of all-inclusive, ultra luxury cruising that begins with it.”

The visuals offer a peak into what’s in store for future reveals with the introduction of brand-new accommodation categories - including a reimagination of the palatial Regent Suite - plus new dining experiences, coming soon.

Starlight Atrium

Embodying a blend of old-world elegance and modern sophistication, the Starlight Atrium recalls an era of quality craftmanship and style, illuminated by a glass-enclosed ceiling that allows sunlight and starlight to grace the space.

“The Starlight Atrium is where the grandeur of Renaissance architecture meets modern luxury, creating a space that feels both timeless and contemporary,” said Yohandel Ruiz, Founding Partner, Studio DADO. “Our goal was to get people to stop in their tracks, awe-struck by its sheer scale and magnificence.”

Not only a place for quiet contemplation while enjoying a glass of Champagne, or practical matters with essential guest services, the Starlight Atrium’s generous space connects multiple guest amenities across decks 4 & 5, such as Galileo’s Bar, the Casino, Prestige Lounge, Meridian Lounge, Coffee Connection, concierge desk and reception.

The two-story Starlight Atrium features twin spiral staircases, beginning on deck 4, which combine on deck 5 and gracefully lead all the way up to deck 11.

On deck 5, alcoves with sculptural furniture and curated art offer breathtaking ocean views—the perfect place to watch the sun rise or slip beyond the horizon at the end of a perfect day. Designed with a neutral palette of dusty rose, taupe, and cream, combined with embellished trims and fringed pillows, the alcoves harken back to old-world detailing.

The reception area, also on deck 5, features pleated leather panels and a light fixture crafted from handblown glass and ceramic pearls. From the lifts, looking back towards Galileo’s Bar, walls are framed with paneling and artwork, creating a traditional yet modern aesthetic.

Galileo’s Bar

Named in a nod to Regent’s beloved Seven Seas Navigator® which will soon leave the fleet, Galileo’s Bar is strategically placed to serve both the Prestige Lounge and adjacent casino. The bar’s ceiling is a canvas displaying a contemporary masterpiece styled like an oil painting, framed by fretted metal detailing.

The base of the bar features fluted elements, and the bold, striped floor highlights the bar’s footprint, creating a focal point for the Starlight Atrium; it is the place for guests to indulge in complimentary premium beverages that come as standard with a Regent sailing.

From the bar, views of the spiral staircases extend back into the Starlight Atrium on both port and starboard sides. The walls, clad in a limestone texture, are adorned with sconces designed to resemble jewelry, adding a touch of glamour.

These Are The Cruise Lines That Will Require COVID-19 Vaccinations For Guests And Crew

Several cruise lines have started announcing vaccination requirements for guests and crew members as the industry looks to restart after the the COVID-19 pandemic.

Last year, cruise ships that were mid-trip began facing COVID-19 related turmoils as the virus began trickling around the world, leaving passengers stuck, infected, or dead. Shortly after, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued a no-sail order, which was later replaced by its "Framework for Conditional Sailing Order," a compilation of protocols needed for cruising to resume again.

Despite this new framework — and pent-up demand for highly anticipated cruise ships and trips — the official return of cruising still remains in limbo. Presently, no major US cruises will be welcoming passengers until May, but companies are constantly extending this pause on sailing.

However, as the COVID-19 vaccine continues to be distributed across the globe, this could soon change.

"If we start to see vaccines become more widely available, and if the vaccines are being administered in a far more efficient manner than they have been, I think it would be reasonable for the cruise lines to say a vaccine is required," Henry Harteveldt, a travel industry analyst and president of the Atmosphere Research Group, told Insider in an interview.

However, vaccine rollout and accessibility has been a notorious struggle around the world. As a result, Harteveldt notes that it may be "counterproductive" for major cruise lines like Carnival and Norwegian to require its guests to receive the vaccine if sailings actually resume in the next few months instead of later in the year, say July.

But over the last month, cruise lines have become increasingly vocal about the vaccine. While some companies — such as Carnival and its Holland America line — are "reviewing" the different vaccines, several others have already announced vaccination protocols for guests and crew members.

These are all the cruise lines with vaccine-related mandates so far:

Saga Cruises

On January 21, United Kingdom-based Saga Cruises announced that it would require all of its passengers to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 two weeks before a trip. Saga primarily caters to passengers over 50-years-old.

Royal Caribbean

Royal Caribbean expects to require its crew members to receive the vaccine before sailings return, a spokesperson told Insider.

Crystal Cruises

On February 18, Crystal Cruises said it would require guests to receive both doses of the COVID-19 vaccine at least 14 days before a cruise. The cruise line is also requiring a negative coronavirus test result from travelers and crew members, among other health protocols.

"We know that peace of mind is the greatest luxury, and the vaccine requirement is simply the best way to ensure the safest possible Crystal Experience for all on board," Jack Anderson, the cruise line's interim president and CEO, said in a press release.

Hornblower Group's "overnight" cruise lines

Hornblower Group's American Queen Steamboat Company and Victory Cruise Lines have both announced requirements for guests and crew members to receive the COVID-19 vaccine for sailings starting July 1.

According to John Waggoner, CEO and founder of American Queen Steamboat Company, requiring the vaccine will ensure the "safest cruising experience possible." However, the cruise lines is are still looking to resume sailing in April, prior to this vaccination deadline.

Norwegian Cruise Line and Regent Seven Seas Cruises

Norwegian Cruise Line and its Regent Seven Seas Cruises have announced COVID-19 vaccine requirements for crew members prior to boarding. However, the cruise lines are still "exploring all options" in regards to vaccination requirements for its guests, according to the cruise lines' statements sent.

TRAVELORE DESTINATION REPORT: The Regent Seven Seas Navigator From New York To Montreal, An Experience That Harkens Back To The Days Of Old World Cruising Without The Formality

As a child growing up in the 1960s and 70s I was privileged to experience grand ocean liners in a day when cruising was considered a very special experience. A recent 10 night sailing from New York to Montreal on the Regent Seven Seas Navigator with several stops in New England and Canada demonstrated how in a time when many cruise ships have become more like small cities with five to over seven thousand passengers with 'carnival-type' atmospheres there is a successful niche market  for smaller luxury ships catering to travelers appreciating more personalized service that harkens back to the days of the grand ocean liners of the past.

Regent Seven Seas is the most inclusive luxury cruise line including unlimited premium alcoholic  beverages, round-trip air on domestic flights and business class on intercontinental flights,  gratuities, gourmet dining, shore excursions, ground transfers, WiFi, spa access, health club, fitness classes, entertainment, enrichment lectures, and 24 hour room service.

The Regent Seven Seas Navigator with a capacity of 490 guests in spacious all suite accommodations was recently extensively refurbished in Brest, France.  One of the most impressive facts about the ship is they sail with  a 1 to 1.42 passenger to staff ratio including 52 chefs.

Evening entertainment on the ship was better than expected with full scale musical reviews by the talented entertainment crew, a five piece orchestra, a ventriloquist and Broadway star Jeri Sager.

Our spacious suite included a welcome bottle of champagne, large walk in closet, stocked refrigerator, large screen television with current on-demand movies, bathroom with separate shower and tub and premium L'Occitane amenities.

Pictured from Prime 7 are one of their beautiful cuts of prime beef, tuna tartar, their signature caramel popcorn ice cream sundae, Maine lobster, 14 layer cake, and crab cake.
Prime 7 Steakhouse.

We were thrilled to have 2 seatings at the Prime 7 Steakhouse on our voyage, the included but only reservation required restaurant on the ship. Depending on the category you book you are guaranteed at least one seating. We recommend going online a few weeks prior to your sailing when you are given notice to get the most preferable seating times.

The other exceptional dining venues on the ship include the Compass Rose, the ship's main dining room and La Veranda for buffet style breakfast and lunch. In the evening La Veranda becomes Sette Mari at La Veranda, a very good Italian restaurant. If you don't feel like dressing for dinner after a long day of touring your dinner will be beautifully presented in your suite, along with your preferred beverages.  The pool grill for lunch and more casual evening dining is also a nice alternative. The barista at the Coffee Connection is also always available for specialty coffee drinks. One day she prepared an excellent dairy-free vanilla frappuccino.

For those on special diets be assured that the chefs will alter your meals as if you had a personal private chef. After making the kitchen staff aware of your specific needs you will have menus delivered to your suite the evening before for pre-ordering. I am pescatarian and my travel partner has a dairy allergy. We were most impressed with specially prepared alternative desserts and how all the restaurant servers made sure even breads served to my travel partner were dairy-free.

Compass Rose Restaurant
Pictured from the Compass Rose are the Thai chicken curry,  seared tuna, vegan fruit dessert prepared specially for my dairy-free travel partner, Alaskan crab salad, tuna tartar, and spa selection of grilled Dorade fillet with Cajun spices and salsa and black beans.

We were honored to dine with the captain, Master Atanas Kostadinov and one of his senior officers at the Compass Rose.

lavish New Canyon Ranch SpaClub Unveiled for Seven Seas Explorer, The Most Luxurious Ship Ever Built

A lavishly appointed spa devoted to relaxation and personal enrichment awaits guests sailing aboard the newest Regent Seven Seas Cruises ship, Seven Seas Explorer.

Situated on deck five, the soothing, state-of-the-art Canyon Ranch SpaClub will rival the finest land-based spas and exude luxury befitting Seven Seas Explorer, the most luxurious ship ever built. Debuting at Canyon Ranch SpaClub will be a selection of ultra-luxurious treatments developed by Canyon Ranch in partnership with lifestyle and beauty experts, Red Flower, and premiering exclusively on Seven Seas Explorer before expanding across the fleet.

“With a sophisticated design and featuring exquisite, one-of-a-kind treatments, the Canyon Ranch SpaClub will provide our guests with a tranquil haven for personal enrichment and relaxation,” said Jason Montague, president and chief operating officer for Regent Seven Seas Cruises. “We’re building the world’s most luxurious ship and wanted to establish a new standard for spa elegance, and once our vision is complete, the spa aboard Seven Seas Explorer will be the most luxurious at sea.”

Upon entering the Canyon Ranch SpaClub guests transition to a retreat exclusively dedicated to complete relaxation and renewal. The cocoon served as the overarching inspiration for the team at RTKL, interpreted not only abstractly in the spa’s aesthetic details, but also envisioned as a metaphor for the rejuvenation guests experience during their spa visit.

The reception area helps ease guests into a place of greater relaxation, decorated with crisscrossing light-grained wooden bands that evoke the silk wrappings woven into a chrysalis and radiating a warm and welcoming softness. Decorative light fixtures cast small twinkling lights off an abstract Swarovski crystal sculpture, forming dappled reflections on the marble floor to evoke an aura of woodland twilight.

Treatments Provide Ultimate Relaxation and Renewal

Guests enter the treatment foyer which offers heated loungers with seating surfaces perfectly contoured to promote ergonomic relaxation and to warm the skin and tissue into a deep state of relaxation.

Guests are beckoned into one of eight fully equipped treatment rooms where stress and toxins are purged and washed away with one of Red Flower’s signature treatments designed exclusively for Seven Seas Explorer. Inspired by the seven seas of the modern world, the following are examples of the Red Flower therapeutic body treatments:

• Red Flower Naturally Nourishing: A Ritual of the Arctic Sea, a 100-minute experience inspired by the spirit of the icy sea with ingredients rich in antioxidants and omegas 3, 6 and 9, sourced directly from the Arctic Circle. Muscle tension is released with a deep tissue massage using Arctic berry and evergreen oils after relaxing in an organic birch mineral hydrotherapy soak.

• Red Flower North Atlantic Journey, an 80-minute body-exfoliating ritual with organic sea salts harvested from the Atlantic Ocean, enriched with sea algae and aloe vera, and scented with Icelandic Moonflower. The body is then enveloped in a toning and hydrating wrap of Italian Blood Orange before a restorative massage with balancing French lavender.

• Red Flower Japan: A Revitalizing Ritual of the North Pacific, a 100-minute, six-part massage body ritual perfected in Japan that takes the therapeutic properties of delicate flowers and invigorating citrus oils and pairs them with traditional techniques for caring for the body. The treatment begins with a ginger grass and bamboo scrub followed by a nutrient-rich rice bran wrap and acupressure facial massage. A mineral soak infused with hinoki and chlorophyll oils and a shiatsu-inspired massage creates balanced energy.

• Red Flower Hammam: A Detoxifying Ritual from the Indian Ocean, a 100-minute ritual of deep detoxification. Guests are vigorously scrubbed with a blend of coffee, olive stones and fresh lemons, and wrapped in a rich rhassoul clay to draw deep impurities out of the body. This is followed by a float in Dead Sea salts and a cleanse with Moroccan mint tea and silt. Then guests are recharged with a Turkish massage using essences of cardamom, jasmine, bergamot, amber and clove.

After a luxurious treatment, guests migrate to a thermal suite where a variety of hot-to-cold experiences await. A state-of-the-art infrared sauna soothes muscles more deeply than traditional steam saunas. An aromatic steam room eases muscles into a sense of healing and relaxation. A cold room maintains a constant temperature of 54 degrees Fahrenheit, mimicking cold plunges that stimulate circulation and are believed to improve health.

In the soothing shower room, guests can choose from a menu of preset shower treatments with various distributions of water flow, chroma-therapeutic lighting and audio effects that mimic natural sounds such as thunderstorms or waterfalls.

Luxury Continues with Spa Amenities

Part of the spa, but located on a private outdoor deck, is an inviting teak-deck terrace filled with plush, partially covered lounge chairs that surround an infinity-edge plunge pool. The pool serves as a dramatic focal point as it contours to the stern of the ship. Guests are treated to incredible views across the sea to the horizon as they soak in the therapeutic waters of the pool.

Adjacent to the spa is a full-service salon with four hair, two manicure and two pedicure stations where guests can receive a little extra personal pampering in preparation for an elegant dinner at one of Seven Seas Explorer’s gourmet restaurants or for a night out on the town during a shore excursion.

From the spa, a dramatic circular staircase transports guest to the fitness center on the deck six. Guests immediately encounter a center with free-weights and weight-lifting machines, along with an impressive collection of cardio workout equipment. The center of the facility offers ample space for cycling, yoga and Pilates classes.

Seven Seas Explorer will sail its maiden voyage July 20, 2016 and spend an inaugural season in Europe before heading to Miami for a series of Caribbean voyages. If you’re yet to decide on your next cruise, or indeed, your first, you should consider how to get the most out of your buck. In fact, if you’re toying between a mega liner and a luxury vessel, here’s some things to consider.

Any cruise is – generally speaking – a fairly hefty investment, but if you make the most out of the choices you have, your experience may also be vastly better.

Accommodations

Almost by definition, luxury ships (Silversea Cruises‘ Silver Shadow, Regent Seven Seas Cruises‘ Seven Seas Mariner, et al) are all-suite, no-inside-rooms vessels. How important is that? Very. It’s especially important in a destination area such as, say, Alaska, where the weather is not always your friend and where shore excursions, however informative and exciting they are, can be tiring (try a half-day Chilkoot Trail hike out of Skagway, for instance, or a five-hour kayaking adventure in Prince William Sound and you’ll know what we mean). It’s so nice after outings like that to put your feet up in an airy, well-appointed, super-comfy suite. And the balcony that invariably comes with the suite makes wildlife and scenery viewing so much more enjoyable – also, of course, of particular significance in places like Alaska, Hawaii, and the fjords of Chile and Norway. And for the most part, even standard cabins on luxury ships will be outfitted with luxurious appointments – from high cotton thread count sheets to flat screen televisions.

Touches

There’s no other way to put it. It’s the little things – the attention to design, detail and layout – that make the difference between a luxury experience and “just another” cruise. Things like Bvlgari toiletries; twin sinks; separate bathtub and shower; terry robes; a well-lighted dressing table (is there a woman out there who doesn't appreciate that feature?). The stateroom drapes will form a real blackout over the windows, eliminating once and for all those annoying chinks of light that keep you awake at night and intrude on your early morning slumber. In Northern Europe and Alaska, where it’s light most of the day in the summer, that is a real blessing.

Construction materials

About those twin sinks we mentioned: The counter tops that enclose them are likely to be real marble. The faucets may be of absolutely top quality stainless steel. The soft furnishings will be plush and inviting, the carpets deep. On luxury ships, you won’t find a lot of plastic or Formica coverings.

No tipping

Employment KarryOn
Most of the luxury lines do not encourage the practice. In fact, some make it very clear in pre-cruise literature that no gratuity is expected. And it appears that the crews have gotten the word. On two cruises in the last year – on Seabourn Pride and the Silver Shadow – our offers of a small gratuity for special services rendered were flatly (but politely) declined.

Free beverages, including alcohol

On some of these ships, there is no charge for booze – at the bar, in the restaurants and lounges, in the stateroom (your in-suite fridge will be stocked with a bottle of wine or champagne, some beer and soft drinks). The ships include wine – on the whole excellent and thoughtfully chosen – with lunch and dinner at no charge. It’s true that if you have very expensive tastes (if the only thing you can drink is a Chateau Mouton Rothschild Premier Grand Cru Classe – 2000, for example, or a 1998 Opus One), you’ll pay extra. Maybe a lot extra. But most people don’t have that problem. One passenger we met on a recent cruise on Silversea’s Silver Shadow expressed a preference for Pinot Grigio rather than the Chardonnay that was being served that day. And he got it! The wait staff simply opened a bottle of Pinot Grigio from the complimentary wine list and… voila.

Itineraries

Smaller ships, including those in the luxury category, are able to visit places that their bigger brethren can’t or, at any rate, don’t. In Alaska that means the likes of Wrangell and Haines, Misty Fjords and Sawyer Glacier. In the Western Mediterranean, they’ll call at more exclusive places like Portofino and Capri. Not only are these ports of call a bit more exotic – it’s also less stressful to be, for instance, part of a group of just a handful of passengers of the only ship in Haines that day than a tourist in Juneau when four or five mega ships are in port.

Service

There’s a reason that service people (stewards, maitre de’s, waitstaff and so on) don’t hustle tips on the luxury ships: They’re paid better than their counterparts on mainstream ships. And because they are paid more and are therefore not as reliant on the generosity of passengers for their income, these lines manage to attract a higher quality of employee, well-trained, well-disciplined operatives who understand the concept of “the customer comes first.”

Fewer announcements

Because they tend not to get involved in the seemingly never-ending stream of onboard entertainment opportunities, there is no need for the cruise director to be constantly on the public address system (“Hey folks, this is Peter from the bridge reminding you that in fifteen minutes we’ll be starting our jackpot bingo in the main show room, with a prize today standing at $600!”). On some ships, the announcements seem to come on with mind-numbing frequency. Not so on luxury vessels. There’s generally a morning announcement of the day’s events, maybe a lunchtime follow up – and that’s it!

Hot food

Think about it. On huge ships – vessels like many of those operating in Alaska each year, some with 2,600-plus passengers – the sometimes enormous distances involved in getting food from the galley to the table often drops the temperature of the food by several degrees. That may not sound like a big deal, but some people find lukewarm victuals unappetizing. And when you’re looking forward to a bowl of nourishing soup after a morning on deck in the chilly air watching glaciers calving, you want that soup piping hot. On the luxury ships, it tends to be – and so does every other dish that’s supposed to be.

Getting to know people in depth

On any of the mega-ships, especially in this day and age of freestyle dining and alternative restaurants aplenty, it’s possible to meet people once and never see them again. On a smaller ship, you tend to be thrown together more easily, and more often.
Ultimately, you can’t expect all of the aforementioned to happen to you, even if you upgrade to a luxury ship. This is simply a random sampling of impressions gained during recent voyages on that kind of vessel. Find out before you book which ships offer the features that most appeal to you. Just keep in mind that it’s sometimes “penny-wise and pound-foolish” to take the cheapest room when it might make more sense to upgrade – maybe even all the way to a luxury ship.
