Select cardholders are gaining access to some exciting new spaces at major hubs across the country.

Good news for Chase Sapphire Reserve® cardholders: Your credit card will soon grant you access to several new, upscale airport lounges.
The credit card company recently opened a new Chase Sapphire Lounge by The Club at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport and revealed plans to open four additional lounges across the USA (including one that will open next month). These outposts will join Chase’s existing locations in Hong Kong International Airport, Boston Logan International Airport, and both New York’s LaGuardia Airport and John F. Kennedy International Airport.
“When we opened our first domestic lounge, we were clear that expanding our footprint and elevating the on-trip experience for our Sapphire Reserve cardmembers was a priority,” Dana Pouwels, the head of airport lounge benefits at Chase, said in a statement. “Our openings in Phoenix and San Diego, in addition to the expansion of lounge access in locations where our customers live and travel, continues along our goal of delivering this highly sought after benefit.”
Here’s what you need to know about Chase’s new and forthcoming lounges and how to access them.
Phoenix Sky Harbor Chase Sapphire Lounge by The Club
Chase quietly opened its newest outpost at Phoenix Sky Harbor airport on November 12. Measuring just over 3,500 square feet, it’s one of the brand’s smallest lounges. Even in that small footprint, however, it features a bar, a patio space, and artwork by local painters Matthew Kirk and Timmy Ham.
For food, guests have two options. They can serve themselves from a buffet area with snacks like tortilla chips and guacamole, mini ham and cheese sandwiches, and Rice Krispie treats, or they can visit the Airstream food truck, which turns out turkey wraps with avocado and salsa, buffalo cauliflower topped with blue cheese and scallions for lunch and dinner, plus breakfast tacos and overnight oats. The menu for the entire lounge was developed by Stephen Jones, a James Beard–nominated chef who helms the Larder & the Delta in Phoenix.
Coffee and espresso drinks from Arizona-based Press Coffee and a wine selection from New York retailer Parcelle are also available, along with beer, cocktails, flavored water, and soft drinks.
The lounge is located in Terminal 4 in the South 1 Concourse. It is now open from 4:30 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. daily.

San Diego Chase Sapphire Lounge by The Club
Chase will open its next lounge at San Diego International Airport on December 6, 2024. The 10,000-square-foot space will include a wellness area with private rest pods, on-demand digital meditations from wellness guru Devi Brown, and facials from skincare brand Face Haus. Cardholders can order complimentary à la carte menu items from Oscar’s Mexican Seafood, a local favorite restaurant, and beverages from California’s Groundwork Coffee.
The San Diego location will be in Terminal 2 West and will be open from 4:30 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. daily.

Beyond the various Chase lounges, Reserve cardholders will also now be able to access the roughly two dozen Air Canada Maple Leaf Lounges and Air Canada Cafes. Although most of the Air Canada Maple Leaf Lounges are in Canada, there are four in the United States: Los Angeles International Airport, San Francisco International Airport, LaGuardia Airport, and Newark International Airport. The caveat is that travelers must be flying with a Star Alliance member, such as United or Lufthansa, to gain entry into the Air Canada lounges.
How to access a Chase Sapphire Lounge by The Club
Travelers with a Chase Sapphire Reserve® Credit Card, a J.P. Morgan Reserve Card, or the Ritz-Carlton Credit Card can get into the lounges for free with an active Priority Pass. Non-Chase Priority Pass members are allowed one complimentary Chase lounge visit per calendar year; after that, they’ll have to pay $75 per person each visit.

Marriott Is Opening Another New All-Inclusive On The Island Of Barbados
Marriott’s all-inclusive footprint continues to grow. You can find an All-Inclusive by Marriott Bonvoy resort on just about every island in the Caribbean right now, from boutique beach hotels to larger luxury resorts (including the lovely new Almare that just debuted on Isla Mujeres).
Now, Marriott is expanding in Barbados again. The new Royalton CHIC Barbados, whose planned opening we just reported on earlier this month, will be joining Marriott’s Autograph Collection, Caribbean Journal has learned. That also means it will be redeemable on points for Bonvoy members.
Royalton CHIC will be one of just four CHIC-branded resorts in the Caribbean, joining existing properties in destinations like Antigua, Punta Cana and Cancun. CHIC is an “elevated” adults-only concept, with a higher price point and a more exclusive feel than the traditional Royalton resort.

It will have 220 rooms, all suites, with a mix of rooms ranging from swim-ups to ocean-view units.
And yes, it will also have a Diamond Club, parent company Blue Diamond’s higher-level resort-within-a-resort concept (akin to Preferred Clubs and the like at other resorts) that comes with special amenities including butler service.
The Royalton CHIC Barbados will also have 12 different dining concepts, including a rooftop bar the company says is inspired by a similar outlet at its Cancun resort.
The Marriott move is only strengthens the “unique energy and sophistication of Royalton Resorts on one of the Caribbean’s most beloved islands,” Blue Diamond President Jordi Pelfort said in a statement provided to Caribbean Journal.
Royalton has not yet released pricing for the property, which is slated to open its doors in the spring of 2026.
As a point of comparison, the Royalton Antigua, which just opened over the summer, has rooms at about $535 per night. You can probably expect that to be slightly higher in Barbados.
It will be the seventh Marriott all-inclusive in Barbados, joining six other properties from the Elegant portfolio: Treasure Beach, Tamarind, Waves, The House, Turtle Beach and Crystal Cove. We’ve stayed at all six of them, and they’re all excellent in different ways. We’re rather partial to The House for its intimate feel (and champagne breakfasts).

WestJet Announces Major Europe, U.S. And Canada Expansion
WestJet on 18NOV announced its full summer schedule for 2025, including new, non-stop service between St. John’s and Paris CDG and welcoming back Halifax-Paris and St. John’s-Dublin flights.
As well, WestJet will enhance its existing transatlantic connectivity by starting its service between Halifax and both Edinburgh and Dublin one month earlier than 2024, while increasing St. John's previous service to London Gatwick from three-times weekly to four-times weekly.
Growing its global hub's transpacific service, WestJet also will maintain its daily service to Tokyo this summer, while increasing Calgary's capacity serving Incheon, Korea.

Through WestJet's longstanding partnership with Delta, guests connecting through Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Detroit, Los Angeles, Minneapolis, New York City, Salt Lake City and Seattle will gain access to a vast network of U.S. destinations on a single purchased ticket with check-in for all flights at first departure, baggage tagged to their final destination and lounge access for select guests.
WestJet’s summer 2025 schedule features 10% growth network wide and domestic growth of 12%. As the airline introduces two new domestic and three new transborder destinations, along with 11 new routes across its network, WestJet is actively pursuing its strategy to improve air travel accessibility and affordability across Canada, officials said.

Updating and refreshing the interior cabins of all of these aircraft will be prioritized as part of the airline's existing fleet reconfiguration plans, to ensure a consistent experience for guests across its operation as soon as possible. WestJet also has announced a series of measures aimed at making travel this coming winter a much better experience.

Emirates Wins APAC Best Premium Economy And Opens Emirates World In Manila
When it comes to designing luxurious premium cabins, it seems the large Middle Eastern carriers lead the way, often sparing no expense to develop new concepts, materials, menus and service levels. When Emirates debuted its Premium Economy cabin in 2022, it ushered in a step change of what premium economy could look like, challenging many other airlines' business class layouts.

In November, Emirates was crowned the Best Premium Economy Class in the 2024 Business Traveller Asia-Pacific Awards. Emirates is investing approximately $27.2 million in these retail spaces, where visitors can browse a curated selection of Emirates-branded merchandise and travel accessories. A highlight of the Manila Emirates World Store is the Emirates A380 onboard lounge display, which gives customers a first-hand look at the premium touches that define Emirates' products in the sky.
The Emirates World retail store is part of the airline's broader strategy to get closer to its customers as they plan their travel and create an elevated experience consistent with the airline's brand. The Manila store was inaugurated by Emirates' Deputy President and Chief Commercial Officer Adnan Kazim, who said:

New Non-Schengen Austrian Lounge Space In Vienna
Austrian Airlines has opened its new lounge area at the G-Gates in the non-Schengen zone at Vienna Airport on Level 3. The new lounge area offers premium service, culinary delights and privacy for guests, along with a fresh design concept. The space is open daily from 5:30 a.m. to 11 p.m.
Until the planned completion of the South Terminal extension in 2027, non-Schengen guests will now be warmly welcomed in close proximity to the former G01 and G03 gates. This is an ideal location during the major construction phase, allowing guests to reach their gates even more quickly and, thanks to its elevated position, have a direct view of the airfield and the large construction site. China Is Expanding Visa-Free Entry To More Countries In Bid To Boost Economy
China announced Friday that it would expand visa-free entry to nine more countries as it seeks to boost tourism and business travel to help revive a sluggish economy.
Starting Nov. 30, travelers from Bulgaria, Romania, Malta, Croatia, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Estonia, Latvia and Japan will be able to enter China for up to 30 days without a visa, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said.
That will bring to 38 the number of countries that have been granted visa-free access since last year. Only three countries had visa-free access previously, and theirs had been eliminated during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The addition of Japan appears to reflect a recent willingness on China’s part to improve ties, which have soured in part over more strident talk from Tokyo on the Taiwan issue. The two countries reached a deal in September in their dispute over the release into the sea of treated but still radioactive water from the destroyed Fukushima nuclear power plant.
Japan was one of the three countries with visa-free entry before the pandemic, and the government had repeatedly requested an early resumption, Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi told reporters in Tokyo.
“We hope the visa exemption measure announced by the Chinese side will contribute to further smooth our exchanges between Japan and China,” he said.
The permitted length of stay for visa-free entry is being increased from the previous 15 days, Lin said, and people participating in exchanges will be eligible for the first time. China has been pushing people-to-people exchange between students, academics and others to try to improve its sometimes strained relations with other countries.
China strictly restricted entry during the pandemic and ended its restrictions much later than most other countries. It restored the previous visa-free access for citizens of Brunei and Singapore in July 2023, and then expanded visa-free entry to six more countries — France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain and Malaysia — on Dec. 1 of last year.
The program has since been expanded in tranches. Some countries have announced visa-free entry for Chinese citizens, notably Thailand, which wants to bring back Chinese tourists.
For the three months from July through September this year, China recorded 8.2 million entries by foreigners, of which 4.9 million were visa-free, the official Xinhua News Agency said, quoting a Foreign Ministry consular official.

American Express Is Adding A Reservation System To Centurion Lounges, Although Not Available In Every Airport Yet

American Express Centurion members have a few more options than most travelers, including the ability to access members-only airport lounges, restaurants and dedicated spaces at events like the U.S. Open. Centurion Lounges have gotten fine reviews for their food and the aesthetics of the space.
If you’ve ever tried to reserve access to a Centurion space, you may have encountered some difficulties in the past — or faced the prospect of waiting on a longer line than you’d like. Based on recent developments, it sounds like American Express has responded to this criticism with some changes to its booking system.
According to View From the Wing’s Gary Leff, American Express has added digital waiting lists to a number of Centurion Lounges. For Leff, this measure addresses some of the issues he’s experienced with overcrowding in Centurion Lounges in recent years. “The whole point of an airport lounge is not to wait in the terminal,” he (accurately) observed in an article on the subject.
Leff cited reports on the r/AmexPlatinum subreddit that described these changes — including one from user Gusontherun, who reported that the Dallas-Fort Worth Centurion Lounge was now using this system. Several other users noted that they, too, were seeing this feature when they checked the AmEx app.
Unfortunately for some travelers, this doesn’t mean that Centurion Lounge access has suddenly become far more user-friendly all over the aviation landscape.
In a report on the booking system upgrade at The Points Guy, Matt Moffitt noted that one of the site’s editors found that at least one lounge did not “have separate lines for those who have and don’t have a QR code for entry.” Given that the QR codes are only valid for 10 minutes, it’s not hard to see how this could be an issue as the system rolls out nationwide — and frequent travelers get more used to making reservations online.

Lighting Of Vienna Town Hall Christmas Tree Marks Start Of Yuletide Season In Austrian Capital
A flip of the switch, some oohs and ahhs from a crowd of onlookers, and a giant decorated Christmas tree went up in lights on Vienna’s town hall square as the Yuletide season got rolling in Austria’s capital on Saturday evening.
Mulled wine was poured, frosted gingerbread cookies dangled from the roofs of vendors’ stalls, kiddies rode a carousel and a brass band tooted out Johann Strauss II’s “The Blue Danube” waltz as the holiday merriment set in.
Vienna Mayor Michael Ludwig joined the ceremonial illumination of the 30-meter (about 100-foot) spruce that bedecked the square in front of town hall, which also was bathed in light.
This year Vienna upped the ante by decorating the tree with 2,000 LED lights and 1,000 Christmas baubles at the market, which drew 3.3 million visitors last year.
The Christmas market was one of more than a dozen in Vienna: Another at Schoenbrunn Castle drew 50,000 visitors at its opening last weekend, part of a tradition notably in German-speaking countries like Austria.
Most of the Christmas markets in Vienna will be open until Dec. 26, though the ones in front of the town hall and Schoenbrunn will stay open until Jan. 6 next year.

Spirit Airlines has filed for bankruptcy protection, it said on Monday, after the pioneer of no-frills travel in the United States struggled with a long run of quarterly losses, failed merger attempts and looming debt maturities.
The Florida-based airline said it had pre-arranged a deal with its bondholders to restructure its debts and raise money to help it operate during the bankruptcy process, which it expects to exit in the first quarter of 2025.
The carrier said it expected to continue operating its business as normal through the proceedings and customers could book and fly without interruption.
The Chapter 11 process will not impact wages or benefits of its employees, it said. Its vendors and aircraft lessors will also continue to be paid and will not be impaired, it added.
The company said it expected to be delisted from the New York Stock Exchange in the near term, and its shares to be canceled and have no value as part of the restructuring.
PROFIT STRUGGLE
Spirit, known for its bright yellow livery, is the first major U.S. airline to file for Chapter 11 since 2011. It has been facing an uncertain future after the collapse of its $3.8 billion planned merger with JetBlue Airways (JBLU.O), opens new tab in January.
Meanwhile, intense competition among U.S. carriers for price-sensitive leisure travelers as well as an oversupply of airline seats in the domestic market hit its pricing power. Its average fare per passenger was down 19% year-on-year in the first half of this year from a year earlier.
It is also among the airlines most heavily affected by issues with RTX's (RTX.N), opens new tab Pratt & Whitney Geared Turbofan engines, which have forced it to ground multiple aircraft and driven up costs.

It’s been seven years in the making. First, St Maarten’s Princess Juliana International Airport unveiled its new departure terminal, an impressive reimagining of its pre-Hurricane Irma look.
Now, the long-awaited arrival terminal has officially made its debut, dramatically changing the way passengers get into St Maarten
It’s only been open for a few weeks, but the new terminal is a dramatic upgrade from what had been a make-shift, provisional space that had been used in varying forms since Irma in 2017, when the airport was significantly damaged.
But it’s not just a sleek, modern arrival area; it includes improved baggage handling; a new, streamlined immigration and customs process (one that includes the island’s new electronic arrival forms); new digital kiosks; and new facilities for the passenger experience.
“I’m incredibly proud of what our team has accomplished,” said Michiel Parent, commercial director at the airport, in a statement provided to Caribbean Journal.
It’s a significant boost for the airport, following the successful launch of its new departure hall. We loved the new look of that terminal on our recent visit to Princess Juliana, from the vastly improved food and beverage offering (including a lovely Bacchus Express) to a very solid duty-free shopping experience.

AirBnB Users Will Play Gladiators In Rome’s Colosseum Under $1.5-Million Sponsorship Deal
The ancient Roman Colosseum will be the venue of gladiator fights for the first time in two millennia under a $1.5-million sponsorship deal with AirBnB that aims to promote “a more conscious tourism.”
Under the deal announced by Airbnb and the Colosseum on Wednesday, the sponsorship by the short-term rental giant will cover the renewal of an educational program inside the ancient Roman amphitheater covering the history of the structure and gladiators.
Eight of the platform’s users and their plus-ones will be able to participate in faux gladiator fights after the Colosseum’s closing time on May 7-8, taking the same underground route used by gladiators in ancient Rome to reach the arena. People can apply for the experience on Nov. 27 at no cost, and the “gladiators” will be chosen by lottery.
The superintendent of the Colosseum Archaeological Park, Alfonsina Russo, told The Associated Press that the deal is in conjunction with the release of Ridley Scott’s new film “Gladiators II,” which opened in Italy on Thursday.

New York Moving To Revive Manhattan Congestion Charge
New York plans to revive a congestion mitigation charge for driving in Manhattan that the state indefinitely put on hold in June, the U.S. Transportation Department said on Thursday.
New York City's congestion pricing program, the first of its kind in the United States, was initially to have charged a toll of $15 during daytime hours for passenger vehicles driving in Manhattan south of 60th Street starting June 30.
A department spokesperson said on Thursday that New York notified the Federal Highway Administration of updated plans to advance the project with a starting toll of $9 for passenger cars. The agency said it is finalizing the steps needed to complete the agreement.
New York Governor Kathy Hochul will announce the plan on Thursday, Reuters reported on Wednesday, citing a source.
Hochul plans to announce a revised program at 12:00 p.m. ET (1700 GMT) that is expected to launch before Jan. 20, when President-elect Donald Trump takes office.
Hochul had cited high inflation and a desire to not deter commuters or tourists because of the additional charge for her decision to halt implementation.
London implemented a similar charge in 2003.
The Metropolitan Transportation Authority is expected to vote next week to approve the charge, the source said.
New York City Comptroller Brad Lander said the decision is a long-awaited win for millions of subway users. "If we don’t get the system in operation before Donald Trump becomes president, we’ll lose $15 billion in critical transit investments," Lander said.
MTA has said congestion pricing would cut traffic by 17%, improve air quality and increase mass transit use by 1% to 2%, generate up to $1.5 billion annually and support $15 billion in debt financing for mass transit improvement.
In 2019, state lawmakers approved the plan to help fund improvements in mass transit using tolls to manage traffic in New York City, the most congested of any U.S. city.
New York says more than 900,000 vehicles enter the Manhattan Central Business District daily, which reduces travel speeds to around 7 miles per hour on average.

TSA-Approved – These 11 Liquids Are Allowed Through Airport Screening, Regardless Of Size
Surely you have also gotten nervous before a plane trip because you forgot the small bottles of liquids, or you have also experienced how you have forgotten to transfer your liquids and the plane staff has made you throw away an entire bottle of cologne before boarding… We have all experienced it, don’t worry.
Since 9/11, passengers are required to carry their liquids in small containers that do not exceed 100 ml, and that do not add up to more than one litre per person.
According to The New York Post, there are speculations that some liquids will be able to be transported in their original size and container in the very near future. Technological advances could mean that the 3-1-1 rule (which requires liquids to be stored in a quart-sized resealable plastic bag and that no container can hold more than 3.4 ounces of liquid) may be coming to an end.
The New York Post has reported that 3D CT (computerized tomography) scanners used at airports to detect unauthorized liquids could be phased out, allowing personal hygiene products to travel in regular size.
There are already some airports (especially in Europe) where this restriction has been eliminated since 2023. The TSA (Transportation Security Administration) informed its workers that they are hoping that this limit can be lifted in the very near future, but that, for now, they could do nothing.

Yes, in fact, the TSA has reported that there is a list of 11 products that can travel in original size and are those related to daily use (many of them practically essential for health and well-being).
The list of these items is as follows.

Water and baby formula: In addition to milk, you can carry water to prepare the formula in mid-flight, something that will really make traveling with the little ones easier.
Liquid medications: Anyone who needs liquid medication can carry it without problems. The TSA recommends having the prescription or some medical document that justifies it on hand in case the authorities do not allow its passage.
Hand sanitizer: This product, which became essential during the pandemic, was already allowed in full size and will continue to be.
Nasal sprays and saline solutions: Very useful for those who need to maintain their respiratory health on long trips, these products can be carried without volume limits.
Artificial tears and eye drops: For all those who wear contact lenses or suffer from dry eyes, this permission is a relief and they will not need a justification to carry them with them on trips.
Non-flammable hair and body sprays: These personal care products (as long as they are not flammable) are also on the TSA list.

JetBlue Is Now Flying Nonstop To A Caribbean Island Famous For Diving And Food

Tourists In Rome Now Have A Walkway To Visit The Trevi Fountain But Can’t Toss Coins While Under Maintenance
Tourists in Rome won’t be allowed to toss coins over their shoulders into the Trevi Fountain, following tradition, though an elevated walkway now gives limited access to the monument during maintenance work.
Rome Mayor Roberto Gualtieri inaugurated the steel walkway on Saturday, saying it will provide tourists with a close-up view of the fountain and calling it a “unique experience” that won’t be ruined by overcrowding.
The walkway over the fountain’s basin is able to accommodate about 130 people at a time.
But tourists won’t be allowed to toss coins from there, as the fountain is currently drained, and could face a 50-euro fine if they do, the mayor warned.
City lore has it that tossing a coin into the Baroque fountain will ensure a return trip to Rome.
Gualtieri said a small pool has been set up next to the walkway to collect the coins, which are donated to the Caritas charity to fund meals for people in need.
The walkway will remain until the end of the maintenance work, which is expected to finish by year’s end.

Air Canada To Launch New Non-stop Flights to Europe And The U.S. In Summer 2025
Air Canada will add new seasonal services and increase capacity into popular destinations across Europe, the United States, and Asia to offer more exciting options for travellers in Summer 2025. Among the new and restored routes are Montreal to Naples and Porto, Toronto to Prague and to Port of Spain in Trinidad and Tobago, and Ottawa to London.
"Air Canada is pleased to provide our customers a wide array of destinations for their Summer 2025 travel. By leveraging our hubs in Toronto and Montreal we will offer more than 100,000 weekly seats to 30 destinations across Europe and North Africa at the peak of next summer," said Mark Galardo, Executive Vice President, Revenue and Network Planning, at Air Canada.
"This will include new services from Montreal to Naples and the Amalfi Coast, as well as Porto and the Douro Valley, opening up new regions for travellers to explore throughout Southern Europe that complement existing services across the Mediterranean and the Iberian Peninsula. And we are also excited to be resuming service to Prague from Toronto, restoring another popular destination to the Air Canada network, and to London-Heathrow from Ottawa, restarting Air Canada's intercontinental flying from Canada's capital. In addition, we are restoring Toronto to Port of Spain flights, with year-round service."
Also, for Summer 2025, there will be added frequencies to Rome and Athens to provide travellers up to three daily flights to each destination from Canada. Air Canada is also adding capacity between Toronto and Stockholm, which will return with up to four weekly frequencies, between Toronto and Madrid, increasing to daily service, and to Paris, with the Boeing 777-300ER to be deployed from both Toronto and Montreal to offer up to 1,300 daily seats on three daily flights between Canada and the French capital. From Montreal, Air Canada will also increase service to Casablanca to daily, a 17 per cent increase over Summer 2024. Additionally, Air Canada will add year-round, four-times weekly service from Toronto to Port of Spain in Trinidad and Tobago.
Transborder
Air Canada will expand its transborder services with new routes to Nashville from Vancouver and Cincinnati from Montreal, complementing existing service from Toronto into Ohio and Northern Kentucky. The carrier is also resuming its service to Jacksonville from Toronto, the only non-stop service between Canada and Jacksonville.
"We will be offering 160,000 weekly seats to the U.S. during the peak of next summer, including new routes from Vancouver to Nashville and Montreal to Cincinnati. Our expanded transborder service will build upon our leading transborder network in conjunction with increased frequencies to seven key U.S. cities. For customers, Air Canada's transborder flights are timed to allow for easy connections at major hubs with our international network and travellers returning to the U.S. can save time on arrival with the convenience of U.S. customs pre-clearance during their connection in Canada," said Mr. Galardo.

Both launched in Summer 2024, these services provide a convenient, non-stop option for customers travelling between the East Coast of North America and the Asia-Pacific region.

Air Canada will resume summer seasonal service to Seoul from Montreal and to Osaka from Toronto on Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft.
