Lighting Of Vienna Town Hall Christmas Tree Marks Start Of Yuletide Season In Austrian Capital

A flip of the switch, some oohs and ahhs from a crowd of onlookers, and a giant decorated Christmas tree went up in lights on Vienna’s town hall square as the Yuletide season got rolling in Austria’s capital on Saturday evening.

Mulled wine was poured, frosted gingerbread cookies dangled from the roofs of vendors’ stalls, kiddies rode a carousel and a brass band tooted out Johann Strauss II’s “The Blue Danube” waltz as the holiday merriment set in.

Vienna Mayor Michael Ludwig joined the ceremonial illumination of the 30-meter (about 100-foot) spruce that bedecked the square in front of town hall, which also was bathed in light.

This year Vienna upped the ante by decorating the tree with 2,000 LED lights and 1,000 Christmas baubles at the market, which drew 3.3 million visitors last year.

The Christmas market was one of more than a dozen in Vienna: Another at Schoenbrunn Castle drew 50,000 visitors at its opening last weekend, part of a tradition notably in German-speaking countries like Austria.

Most of the Christmas markets in Vienna will be open until Dec. 26, though the ones in front of the town hall and Schoenbrunn will stay open until Jan. 6 next year.

There are about 1,000 of them on the island. Some say 1,500, some say more. They’re set on side streets, in the heart of town, or right on the beach. And in Barbados, rum shops are an integral part of the culture.
Barbados just got easier to visit.

You go in, choose your sugarcane spirit, take it with you and begin conversations that can last all day long, from politics to sports to the essential questions of life.

If you haven’t been to Barbados, a stop at a rum shop is essential. But it’s just a part of a vibrant tapestry of reasons why this Caribbean island is such a fascinating one, from its UNESCO World Heritage Site near Bridgetown to its jaw-dropping beaches and its unique collection of rarefied, lovely, mostly small resorts.

And Barbados just got much easier to visit from the all-important New York market.
Treasure Beach is a hidden gem in Barbados.

American Airlines has officially kicked off its newest route between New York’s John F Kennedy International Airport and Barbados, with service operating every day of the week on Boeing 737 aircraft.

It’s a huge addition for Barbados, which has been making a concerted effort to draw in more American visitors, part of a wider push for the world’s largest airline in the Caribbean for this winter season.

If Planning A Trip To Israel, Here Are The Airlines Currently Flying There.

If you are planning to fly to Israel, here is an up-to-date list of foreign airlines that fly to Israel.

Emirates airlines, Fly Dubai and Etihad continue to fly to Israel daily. From Europe, you can see Tarom, Hi-Sky, Fly One, Cyprus, Smartwings, Blue Bird, Tus Airways and other companies.

In addition, Ethiopian Airlines, Hainan Airlines, Uzbekistan Airways, and a few other companies still operate direct flights to Israel. It is important to emphasize that information can change all the time and it is important to stay in constant contact with the airlines you are supposed to fly with.

The four Israeli airlines also continue to operate continuously, with El Al, Arkia and IsraAir operating direct flights to dozens of destinations around the world, and Air Haifa currently operates only on routes between Ben Gurion Airport and Larnaca.

Currently, most airlines from Europe, North America, Asia and Africa have postponed operations in Israel for the foreseeable future, and at this point, but hopefully we will soon see a massive return of airlines to Israel.

Travelore News: US No-Frills Pioneer Spirit Airlines Files For Bankruptcy Protection

Spirit Airlines has filed for bankruptcy protection, it said on Monday, after the pioneer of no-frills travel in the United States struggled with a long run of quarterly losses, failed merger attempts and looming debt maturities.

The Florida-based airline said it had pre-arranged a deal with its bondholders to restructure its debts and raise money to help it operate during the bankruptcy process, which it expects to exit in the first quarter of 2025.

The carrier said it expected to continue operating its business as normal through the proceedings and customers could book and fly without interruption.

The Chapter 11 process will not impact wages or benefits of its employees, it said. Its vendors and aircraft lessors will also continue to be paid and will not be impaired, it added.

The company said it expected to be delisted from the New York Stock Exchange in the near term, and its shares to be canceled and have no value as part of the restructuring.

PROFIT STRUGGLE

Spirit, known for its bright yellow livery, is the first major U.S. airline to file for Chapter 11 since 2011. It has been facing an uncertain future after the collapse of its $3.8 billion planned merger with JetBlue Airways (JBLU.O), opens new tab in January.

Meanwhile, intense competition among U.S. carriers for price-sensitive leisure travelers as well as an oversupply of airline seats in the domestic market hit its pricing power. Its average fare per passenger was down 19% year-on-year in the first half of this year from a year earlier.

It is also among the airlines most heavily affected by issues with RTX's (RTX.N), opens new tab Pratt & Whitney Geared Turbofan engines, which have forced it to ground multiple aircraft and driven up costs.

Spirit has not posted a full-year profit since 2019. It lost about $360 million in the first half of this year despite strong travel demand.

Analysts say a merger with JetBlue opens new tab would have thrown a lifeline to the company. However, a Boston judge blocked the deal on the grounds it would reduce competition, raising doubts about the company's ability to manage looming debt maturities.

Spirit has been shrinking its operations as part of its efforts to cut costs and shore up its finances. It has furloughed hundreds of pilots and delayed aircraft deliveries. It is also selling its planes to boost liquidity.

A 'COMPREHENSIVE' RESTRUCTURING

It filed for Chapter 11 protection in New York. The airline said a "comprehensive balance sheet restructuring" was expected to reduce total debt, provide increased financial flexibility, position it for long-term success, and accelerate investments.
'
As part of the restructuring agreement, the company has received commitments for a $350 million equity investment from existing bondholders. It plans to reduce its debt load by $795 million via debt/equity swap transaction.

Existing bondholders will also provide $300 million in debtor-in-possession (DIP) financing, which, together with available cash, is expected to support the airline through the Chapter 11 process.
'
Spirit's flight attendants union said the bankruptcy filing does not change pay, benefits or working conditions for its members. It told flight attendants to continue to work as planned.

Spirit's shares, which have plunged more than 90% this year, were halted for trading on Monday.

HUMBLE BEGINNINGS

The company started out as a long-haul trucking company in 1964 before shifting to aviation around 1983. It offered leisure packages to popular destinations under the name Charter One Airlines and rebranded to Spirit in 1992.

The discount carrier became popular with budget-conscious customers willing to forgo amenities like checked bags and seat assignments.

Ultra-low-cost carriers, which excelled at keeping their expenses low and offering affordable, no-frills travel, have struggled since the pandemic as some travelers prefer to pay extra for a more comfortable journey as they pursue experiences.

By Shivansh Tiwary and Rajesh Kumar Singh, Reuters Spirit's troubles, along with those at some of rival budget carriers, have spurred talk of a flawed business model among some Wall Street analysts.

St Maarten’s Princess Juliana Airport Finally Has A New Arrival Terminal

It’s been seven years in the making. First, St Maarten’s Princess Juliana International Airport unveiled its new departure terminal, an impressive reimagining of its pre-Hurricane Irma look.

Now, the long-awaited arrival terminal has officially made its debut, dramatically changing the way passengers get into St Maarten

It’s only been open for a few weeks, but the new terminal is a dramatic upgrade from what had been a make-shift, provisional space that had been used in varying forms since Irma in 2017, when the airport was significantly damaged.

But it’s not just a sleek, modern arrival area; it includes improved baggage handling; a new, streamlined immigration and customs process (one that includes the island’s new electronic arrival forms); new digital kiosks; and new facilities for the passenger experience.

“I’m incredibly proud of what our team has accomplished,” said Michiel Parent, commercial director at the airport, in a statement provided to Caribbean Journal.

It’s a significant boost for the airport, following the successful launch of its new departure hall. We loved the new look of that terminal on our recent visit to Princess Juliana, from the vastly improved food and beverage offering (including a lovely Bacchus Express) to a very solid duty-free shopping experience.

St Maarten isn’t just a popular destination (both the French side and the Dutch side); it’s also an essential air hub for many of the islands in the Northern and Eastern Caribbean, particularly nearby islands like Saba, Statia, St Barth and Anguilla, all of which rely on the island for transiting passengers.
New digital kiosks.

Are you planning a vacation to St Martin right now? In recent years, it’s the French side that has seen the most tourism growth and development, from a culinary scene that is right at the top of the Caribbean to continued growth in the hotel sector, particularly boutique hotels like Le Martin and, more recently, The Forest.

Marriott also just opened a brand-new resort on the island, with the new JW Marriott Beach Resort on Dawn Beach, one of the best beaches on the Dutch side. Rooms from $449 per night.

Our favorite place to stay in St Martin remains one of the Caribbean’s top resorts: the Grand Case Beach Club.

AirBnB Users Will Play Gladiators In Rome’s Colosseum Under $1.5-Million Sponsorship Deal

The ancient Roman Colosseum will be the venue of gladiator fights for the first time in two millennia under a $1.5-million sponsorship deal with AirBnB that aims to promote “a more conscious tourism.”

Under the deal announced by Airbnb and the Colosseum on Wednesday, the sponsorship by the short-term rental giant will cover the renewal of an educational program inside the ancient Roman amphitheater covering the history of the structure and gladiators.

Eight of the platform’s users and their plus-ones will be able to participate in faux gladiator fights after the Colosseum’s closing time on May 7-8, taking the same underground route used by gladiators in ancient Rome to reach the arena. People can apply for the experience on Nov. 27 at no cost, and the “gladiators” will be chosen by lottery.

The superintendent of the Colosseum Archaeological Park, Alfonsina Russo, told The Associated Press that the deal is in conjunction with the release of Ridley Scott’s new film “Gladiators II,” which opened in Italy on Thursday.

Russo characterized the sponsorship arrangement as one of the many such deals to help finance projects at the park.

New York Moving To Revive Manhattan Congestion Charge

New York plans to revive a congestion mitigation charge for driving in Manhattan that the state indefinitely put on hold in June, the U.S. Transportation Department said on Thursday.

New York City's congestion pricing program, the first of its kind in the United States, was initially to have charged a toll of $15 during daytime hours for passenger vehicles driving in Manhattan south of 60th Street starting June 30.

A department spokesperson said on Thursday that New York notified the Federal Highway Administration of updated plans to advance the project with a starting toll of $9 for passenger cars. The agency said it is finalizing the steps needed to complete the agreement.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul will announce the plan on Thursday, Reuters reported on Wednesday, citing a source.

Hochul plans to announce a revised program at 12:00 p.m. ET (1700 GMT) that is expected to launch before Jan. 20, when President-elect Donald Trump takes office.

Hochul had cited high inflation and a desire to not deter commuters or tourists because of the additional charge for her decision to halt implementation.

London implemented a similar charge in 2003.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority is expected to vote next week to approve the charge, the source said.

New York City Comptroller Brad Lander said the decision is a long-awaited win for millions of subway users. "If we don’t get the system in operation before Donald Trump becomes president, we’ll lose $15 billion in critical transit investments," Lander said.

MTA has said congestion pricing would cut traffic by 17%, improve air quality and increase mass transit use by 1% to 2%, generate up to $1.5 billion annually and support $15 billion in debt financing for mass transit improvement.

In 2019, state lawmakers approved the plan to help fund improvements in mass transit using tolls to manage traffic in New York City, the most congested of any U.S. city.

New York says more than 900,000 vehicles enter the Manhattan Central Business District daily, which reduces travel speeds to around 7 miles per hour on average.

TSA-Approved – These 11 Liquids Are Allowed Through Airport Screening, Regardless Of Size

Surely you have also gotten nervous before a plane trip because you forgot the small bottles of liquids, or you have also experienced how you have forgotten to transfer your liquids and the plane staff has made you throw away an entire bottle of cologne before boarding… We have all experienced it, don’t worry.

Since 9/11, passengers are required to carry their liquids in small containers that do not exceed 100 ml, and that do not add up to more than one litre per person.

According to The New York Post, there are speculations that some liquids will be able to be transported in their original size and container in the very near future. Technological advances could mean that the 3-1-1 rule (which requires liquids to be stored in a quart-sized resealable plastic bag and that no container can hold more than 3.4 ounces of liquid) may be coming to an end.

The New York Post has reported that 3D CT (computerized tomography) scanners used at airports to detect unauthorized liquids could be phased out, allowing personal hygiene products to travel in regular size.

There are already some airports (especially in Europe) where this restriction has been eliminated since 2023. The TSA (Transportation Security Administration) informed its workers that they are hoping that this limit can be lifted in the very near future, but that, for now, they could do nothing.

Are there liquids that I can carry in large format?
Yes, in fact, the TSA has reported that there is a list of 11 products that can travel in original size and are those related to daily use (many of them practically essential for health and well-being).
The list of these items is as follows.

Baby milk: If you are traveling with a baby, you can now carry breast milk or formula in the amount you need without worrying about the usual limits. Water and baby formula: In addition to milk, you can carry water to prepare the formula in mid-flight, something that will really make traveling with the little ones easier.

Liquid medications: Anyone who needs liquid medication can carry it without problems. The TSA recommends having the prescription or some medical document that justifies it on hand in case the authorities do not allow its passage.

Hand sanitizer: This product, which became essential during the pandemic, was already allowed in full size and will continue to be.

Nasal sprays and saline solutions: Very useful for those who need to maintain their respiratory health on long trips, these products can be carried without volume limits.

Artificial tears and eye drops: For all those who wear contact lenses or suffer from dry eyes, this permission is a relief and they will not need a justification to carry them with them on trips.

Non-flammable hair and body sprays: These personal care products (as long as they are not flammable) are also on the TSA list.

Contact lens solution: Essential for contact lens wearers.

Denture cleaning fluid: Now, denture wearers can carry their cleaning products without worrying about volume limits. 10. Creams and lotions (for medical use)

Inhaler fluids: Liquids needed for inhalation devices (for those with asthma or respiratory problems)

Live fish transported in water and other biological specimens.

Freezer or ice packs for necessary medical items (such as vaccines that need to be kept cold)

The TSA says officers can still scan liquids for explosives or prohibited items hidden in luggage, but that, for example, in the case of liquid medications that cannot be exposed to X-rays, there are other ways to examine them.

JetBlue Is Now Flying Nonstop To A Caribbean Island Famous For Diving And Food

More than 80 different dive sites. A food scene anchored by a restaurant with a three Michelin-star pedigree. A fun, carefree, quintessential small-island vibe.

Travelers have been flocking to the Dutch Caribbean island of Bonaire over the last few years, as a destination that was long something of a secret has started to find its place on the travel map.

Now, it’s a whole lot easier to get there, with just-launched flights between New York and Bonaire on JetBlue.

The new nearly-five-hour flight, which officially started this past week, will be running twice per week, with nonstop flights on Tuesdays and Saturdays out of New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport.

JetBlue has already flown for years to Bonaire’s Dutch Caribbean neighbors of Aruba and Curacao, and now it’s completed the trifecta.

It’s “significant step in our commitment to making our beautiful island more accessible to North American travelers,” said Tourism Corporation Bonaire CEO Miles Mercera, in a statement provided to Caribbean Journal.

So what do New Yorkers need to know about the island?

Well, the island found fame for its diving. What’s unique in Bonaire is that you don’t have to take a dive boat. Practically every dive site on the island is a shore diving spot, mean you can pull up your car right to the coastline, grab your tanks and jump in. (Most hard-core divers rent pick-up trucks for this purpose).

If you’re not a diver, you can dive into a food scene that is among the best in the region. It’s topped by the Brass Boer, the Caribbean outpost of the three-Michelin-star Die Librije in Holland and one that has regularly found its way to the top of the 50 Best Restaurants in the Caribbean rankings. It extends to everything from food trucks (make sure you go for the lionfish burgers at Cactus Blue) to seafood spots like At Sea.
The Brass Boer, the number one restaurant in the Caribbean last year.

What about hotels?

We love the Harbour Village Beach Club, a resort we named Caribbean Hotel of the Year in 2023 and one that remains the island’s signature place to stay — including the best beach in Bonaire. Rates from $350 right now.

There’s also the fun, sleek Delfins Beach Resort ($226), which, as we just reported, is joining the Hilton portfolio.

For a boutique stay, try the lovely Bamboo Bonaire, an adults-only hotel that’s all about wellness and serenity (Rooms starting at $226)

What about flight prices? You can book on JetBlue for as low as $555.24 for an itinerary in mid-November.

Tourists In Rome Now Have A Walkway To Visit The Trevi Fountain But Can’t Toss Coins While Under Maintenance

Tourists in Rome won’t be allowed to toss coins over their shoulders into the Trevi Fountain, following tradition, though an elevated walkway now gives limited access to the monument during maintenance work.

Rome Mayor Roberto Gualtieri inaugurated the steel walkway on Saturday, saying it will provide tourists with a close-up view of the fountain and calling it a “unique experience” that won’t be ruined by overcrowding.

The walkway over the fountain’s basin is able to accommodate about 130 people at a time.

But tourists won’t be allowed to toss coins from there, as the fountain is currently drained, and could face a 50-euro fine if they do, the mayor warned.

City lore has it that tossing a coin into the Baroque fountain will ensure a return trip to Rome.

Gualtieri said a small pool has been set up next to the walkway to collect the coins, which are donated to the Caritas charity to fund meals for people in need.

The walkway will remain until the end of the maintenance work, which is expected to finish by year’s end.

Rome city officials are devising a plan to block off the area around the fountain. Under the plan, visitors will be required to book online and pay 2 euros ($2.20). Once inside, they will have 30 minutes to enjoy the fountain.

A Culinary Journey Through Mexico’s State Of Nayarit

From the sun-drenched beaches of Punta Mita to the coffee farms nestled in the Sierra Madre mountains, the state of Nayarit is quickly becoming one of Mexico’s most celebrated culinary destinations. Known for its fresh seafood, traditional dishes, and fine dining scene, Nayarit offers travelers a flavorful journey that highlights both its rich history and evolving gastronomy. This year, the 29th Festival Gourmet International will take place from November 7 to 17, showcasing the region’s finest cuisine and attracting food lovers from around the world.

Fine Dining with a View: Punta Mita’s Culinary Excellence

Punta Mita, the exclusive resort town along Nayarit’s coastline, is home to some of the finest dining experiences in all of Mexico. Boasting luxurious beachfront restaurants that blend international culinary trends with local flavors, it has become a paradise for those seeking refined, gourmet meals in a breathtaking setting.

Among the standouts is Carolina, a AAA Five-Diamond restaurant that offers an innovative take on Mexican cuisine with an emphasis on local seafood. The menu highlights seasonal ingredients, and the chefs take pride in using traditional techniques, like the open-fire grilling that characterizes many local dishes.

Another notable dining venue is Spice Market, located in the W Punta de Mita. Here, Southeast Asian flavors are married with fresh local ingredients, providing guests with a fusion experience that nods to global influences while embracing the bounty of the Pacific Coast.

For travelers looking for a more authentic yet elevated experience, Hector’s Kitchen in Punta Mita delivers. Helmed by Chef Héctor Leyva, the legendary institution offers a farm-to-table approach, highlighting local ingredients in dishes that are a true celebration of Mexican flavors. Known for its fresh seafood, tender meats, and unique salsas, Hector’s Kitchen is a must-visit for those seeking modern Mexican cuisine in a relaxed, stylish setting.

Traditional Nayarit Dishes: A Taste of Heritage

While fine dining has taken root along Nayarit’s coastline, the state’s culinary soul remains grounded in its traditional dishes, which are often passed down through generations. Nayarit’s cuisine is deeply connected to its coastal geography, where the sea provides an endless supply of fresh ingredients, and the culture celebrates communal, slow-cooked meals.

One of Nayarit’s most iconic dishes is Pescado Zarandeado. This savory dish features whole fish, typically red snapper, marinated in a mix of chiles, garlic, and citrus before being grilled over hot coals. The fish takes on a smoky flavor that is perfectly balanced by the tangy marinade, a testament to Nayarit’s expertise in grilling techniques.

Another local favorite is Chicharrón de Pescado, crispy fried fish bites often served with a side of spicy salsa. This dish highlights Nayarit’s love of simple, bold flavors, where fresh fish is seasoned and cooked to golden perfection.

Nayarit is also known for more complex dishes like Tlaxtihuilli, a pre-Hispanic soup made from shrimp and thickened with masa. This hearty dish is a staple in rural communities, where the flavors of ancient traditions are kept alive in everyday meals.

The region’s culinary diversity extends beyond seafood to dishes like Puerco Echado, a slow-cooked pork dish seasoned with native herbs and spices, offering a rich and savory experience. It’s served with handmade tortillas and a side of beans, embodying the hearty, comforting essence of Nayarit’s inland cuisine.

No exploration of Nayarit’s flavors would be complete without trying Tejuino, a traditional beverage made from fermented corn dough mixed with brown sugar and lime juice. This refreshing drink is beloved throughout the region, especially on warm afternoons, and reflects the importance of maize in local culture.

A Growing Coffee Culture

Beyond the beaches and coastal delicacies, Nayarit is also becoming known for its coffee culture, particularly in the town of Compostela. Here, the lush highlands provide the perfect climate for growing rich, aromatic coffee beans. Small-batch coffee farms, many family-owned for generations, are producing some of Mexico’s most sought-after brews. Visitors can enjoy fresh, locally roasted coffee at one of Compostela’s many charming cafes, where the art of brewing is celebrated alongside the region’s rich agricultural history.

29th Festival Gourmet International: A Showcase of Nayarit’s Culinary Brilliance

Nayarit’s gastronomic allure will be on full display at the 29th Festival Gourmet International, running from November 7 to 17, 2024. This annual event, which draws chefs and food enthusiasts from around the globe, will feature a wide range of activities, from cooking demonstrations to exclusive tasting menus. Local chefs will collaborate with internationally renowned culinary masters to create dishes that fuse Nayarit’s traditional flavors with contemporary techniques.

The festival will also spotlight the region’s abundant seafood, its coffee culture, and the traditional dishes that make Nayarit a must-visit for food lovers. Punta Mita’s fine dining restaurants will participate in the event, offering special menus that highlight the unique flavors of Nayarit, from Pescado Zarandeado to the local favorite, Tejuino.

With so much to offer, Nayarit stands as a culinary destination that is as diverse as it is delicious. From its coastal eateries serving fresh seafood to its upscale restaurants in Punta Mita, Nayarit’s food scene is a testament to the region’s rich heritage and evolving culinary creativity. Whether you’re a seasoned gourmet or a traveler eager to discover authentic Mexican flavors, Nayarit is a place where every meal tells a story—and every bite is unforgettable.

Mendocino County Named Wine Enthusiast's American Wine Region Of The Year

Mendocino County, renowned for its vast, rugged landscapes and commitment to organic and regenerative viticulture, has been named America's Wine Region of the Year for 2024 by Wine Enthusiast magazine. This prestigious honor highlights Mendocino County's rich history, diverse terroir, and growing influence within the wine industry, nationally and abroad.

Mendocino County is one of California's most distinctive and eco-conscious wine regions, and this accolade reflects the region's excellence in winemaking, sustainability efforts, and the close-knit community of winegrowers who have made Mendocino a standout destination for wine lovers looking for hidden gems.

Mendocino Winegrowers Incorporated (MWI), the organization representing the region's producers, is thrilled by the recognition. "This award is a testament to the passion, resilience, and dedication of Mendocino's wine community," said MWI Executive Director Bonnie Butcher. "Our winemakers have long been pioneers in organic and sustainable farming, dating to the Back to the Land movement, and this acknowledgment from Wine Enthusiast reinforces our commitment to producing world-class wines that reflect the terroir and values of our region.

Of the county's vast 2.5 million acres, just over 15,000 acres are planted to grapes, with about 100 wineries operating at any given time. Mendocino County's unique geography, nestled between the Pacific Ocean and the Mayacamas mountain range, provides the ideal climate for grape growing, resulting in a kaleidoscope of flavors for winemakers to work with. The county's 12 distinct American Viticultural Areas (AVAs) encompass many landscapes: cool, coastal vineyards with strong fog influence; warm inland valleys with rolling, sunbaked hills; and mountains covered with forest and chaparral, where grapevines cling to the slopes at 2,000+ feet. Among this array of microclimates are areas ideal for growing Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Zinfandel, as well as other notable varietals like Gewürztraminer. Mendocino County's most famous region, the Anderson Valley, is particularly known for its Pinot Noir festival every May.

"Our wines are exceptional and affordable, our leadership in organic and regenerative viticulture is unmatched, and our growers and winemakers share a strong sense of community," says third-generation Husch Vineyards co-owner Zac Robinson, whose winery won two Best in Show awards at the recent Mendocino County Wine Competition. "It all combines to make Mendocino County a really special place."

Mendocino County is also known for its accessible, old growth redwood groves, its famous Pacific coastline, and for being one of the most dog-friendly places to visit in the state. "There's something for everyone here," says Ramon Jimenez, executive director of Visit Mendocino. "Thanks to this award, more people will get to discover what we've known all along - that Mendocino County is magical." He emphasizes that Mendocino is a great place to visit year-round. "We have harvest events in September and October, a mushroom festival in November, a seafood festival in January, several whale festivals in March and April, a world-renowned film festival in May, and so many summer events I couldn't possibly list them all," says Jimenez. "And it's usually sunny."

A group of Mendocino vintners, along with MWI and Visit Mendocino, will accept the American Wine Region of the Year award on the county's behalf at the Wine Enthusiast Wine Star Award Gala in San Francisco on January 27, 2025.

Sesame Place Philadelphia Paves The Way In Accessibility By Becoming First Theme Park In The United States To Join Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Program

After becoming the first theme park in the world to be designated as a Certified Autism Center™, Sesame Place Philadelphia will once again pave the way as an industry leader in accessibility as the first theme park in the United States to join the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower program. The program, which helps people with non-visible disabilities, will launch at the park in early 2025.

The Sunflower, a global initiative, is a wearable tool that signals to Sesame Place Ambassadors that a guest of the park may need extra help, understanding, or time due to a disability that may not be immediately apparent. According to Hidden Disabilities Sunflower, approximately 1 in 6 people live with a disability – approximately 1.3 billion people globally. While some people experience a disability that may be visible, many have a non-visible condition or experience a combination of both visible and non-visible conditions. These invisible disabilities can be neurological, cognitive and neurodevelopmental as well as physical, visual, auditory and include sensory and processing difficulties.

The Sunflower program is completely voluntary, and guests who choose to participate are not required to disclose any personal information or a diagnosis. Guests who would like to participate will be able to pick up a complimentary Sunflower-branded identifier at designated locations around the park to discreetly signal that they may need additional support.

"We are thrilled to welcome Sesame Place as the first theme park in the United States to join the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower program. Sesame Place has committed time and passion to implement the training to ensure that Sunflower wearers are recognized by their Ambassadors to receive the additional support, understanding and kindness they may need," said Lynn Smith, Regional Sunflower Director, United States.

As a Sunflower member, Sesame Place Philadelphia will provide Ambassadors with additional accessibility training resources to increase disability awareness at the park. The introduction of Hidden Disabilities Sunflower will complement the park's existing accessibility programs, including its Ride Access Program and Special Access Pass, which guests can enroll in at the park's Welcome Center.

"Sesame Place Philadelphia is proud to be an industry leader in accessibility," said Cathy Valeriano, President of Sesame Place Philadelphia. "Our new program furthers the park's commitment to providing an inclusive environment and helps create memorable, meaningful experiences for our guests."

Sesame Place Philadelphia has established itself as a leader in inclusivity, highlighted by its industry-lead designation by the International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards (IBCCES) as the as the first theme park in the world to become a Certified Autism Center (CAC) in 2018. As a CAC, Sesame Place provides comprehensive training to staff, a branded IBCCES Sensory Guide, and on-site accommodations for autistic individuals and those with sensory sensitivities. Earlier this year, Sesame Place renewed and expanded its certification, with Ambassadors completing additional training in neurodiversity. Just last week, the park announced ASL Saturdays, a new program featuring a Certified ASL Interpreter stationed at shows throughout the park on select days.

The addition of the Sunflower program complements Sesame Place's current accessibility initiatives and CAC designation while fostering an environment in which all guests, regardless of their abilities, can participate in and fully enjoy the park's offerings.

About Sesame Place

Sesame Place® Philadelphia, the only theme park on the East Coast based entirely on the award-winning show, Sesame Street®, was the first theme park in the world to become a Certified Autism Center. The park has more than 25 Sesame Street-themed attractions, entertaining character shows and parades, an interactive Sesame Street Neighborhood, and everyone's favorite furry friends. Sesame Place Philadelphia will kick off its 45th Birthday Celebration in 2025 with a park-wide birthday bash, featuring festive décor, the return of the Sesame Street Birthday Parade, and more. Celebrate family-friendly events all year long at Sesame Place including the Mardi Gras Celebration, Elmo's Eggstravaganza, Elmo's Springtacular, Sesame Summer Splash, The Count's Halloween Spooktacular, and A Very Furry Christmas. Travelore News: US Airlines Are Required To Refund You For A Canceled Flight Automatically

Airlines in the United States are now required to give passengers cash refunds if their flight is significantly delayed or canceled, even if that person does not explicitly ask for a refund.
Frederic J. Brown/AFP/Getty Images

The Department of Transportation says the final federal rule requiring that airlines dole out refunds — not vouchers — went into effect Monday. The major change is being implemented only a month before the start of what is likely to be a huge holiday travel season.

Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg made the announcement on X after he first presented the proposed rule back in April. “Today, our automatic refund rule goes into full effect,” Buttigieg posted. “Passengers deserve to get their money back when an airline owes them—without headaches or haggling.”

The new rule mandates that refunds are automatically processed by an airline if a passenger’s flight is “canceled or significantly changed, and they do not accept the significantly changed flight, rebooking on an alternative flight, or alternative compensation.”

The Department of Transportation says airlines must then refund a passenger within seven business days if they bought a ticket on a credit card and within 20 calendar days if they used another form of payment.

The move has faced pushback from the airline industry. In July, Buttigieg told airlines that they must make clear to passengers when they are entitled to a refund.

In a statement, industry lobby Airlines for America said, “we support the automatic refund rule and are happy to accommodate customers with a refund when they choose not to be rebooked.”
