Art lovers and cultural explorers, take note! A monumental cultural event is making its way to the Pacific Northwest. In what is being hailed as the largest exhibition of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art ever presented in North America, the Portland Art Museum (PAM) is preparing to host a landmark showcase of creativity spanning 65,000 years of continuous living culture.
The exhibition, titled The Stars We Do Not See: Australian Indigenous Art, promises to be an eye-opening journey into the diverse and distinct visual traditions of more than 250 distinct Indigenous nations.
Here is everything you need to know about this historic arrival.
A Rare Cultural Opportunity
Organized by the National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne and the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., the collection is making its only West Coast stop at the Portland Art Museum. Drawn entirely from the National Gallery of Victoria's world-renowned collection, the showcase features many masterpieces that have never left Australia until this tour.
For years, PAM has worked to bring this expansive collection to Portland, offering local audiences and travelers a rare chance to experience the profound depth, vitality, and resilience of Australian Indigenous art and culture.
What to Expect on Display
Charting watershed moments in Indigenous art from the late 19th century to the present day, the exhibition will feature over 100 works created by more than 130 artists. Visitors will be introduced to a breathtaking variety of mediums and styles that blend ancestral traditions with contemporary innovation.
Highlights of the exhibition include:
- Traditional Mediums: Striking ochre paintings made on bark and intricate experimental weavings.
- Desert Mapping: The iconic, meticulously detailed maps of the Central and Western deserts (frequently referred to as "dot paintings").
- Contemporary Works: Groundbreaking modern pieces that utilize neon, video, immersive sound, and powerful photography.
You can expect to see works from trailblazing painters like Anmatyerr superstar Emily Kam Kngwarray and Senior Yolŋu artist Gulumbu Yunupiŋu (the inspiration behind the exhibition's title), alongside contemporary innovators like Brook Andrew, Destiny Deacon, and Betty Muffler.
