Travelore News: American Airlines Selected To Anchor Phoenix Sky Harbor's New West Terminal

By TraveloreReport

American Airlines has officially been named the primary carrier for the future West Terminal at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. This major development marks the first entirely new terminal built at the airport in nearly 40 years, setting the stage for the next generation of travel in the Southwest.

A Historic Expansion for Sky Harbor

The announcement cements American's long-standing relationship with Phoenix—a connection that dates back to 1930. The upcoming West Terminal will be built on the west side of the airport between Terminal 3 and Taxiway U, marking the first new terminal construction at Sky Harbor since Terminal 4 opened its doors in 1990.

As Phoenix’s largest airline, American currently accounts for approximately 40% of the airport's traffic. The carrier operates over 300 peak daily departures from Sky Harbor, connecting passengers to more than 100 destinations worldwide and serving over 20 million customers at the hub each year.

Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego praised the partnership, stating, “The West Terminal is a game-changing investment in our economic future and will help us continue to welcome travelers with best-in-class service, set a new standard for the passenger experience and meet the needs of our growing community.”

Looking Ahead to the 2030s

While the announcement gives the future West Terminal a clear anchor tenant, travelers won't be checking in just yet. The timeline for the massive infrastructure project is spread out over the next decade:

  • Design Procurement: Expected to begin in 2027.
  • Construction: Projected to start in late 2029.
  • Opening: Targeted for late 2033.

The exact design, layout, and number of gates are still in the collaborative planning phase. Notably for Phoenix residents, the multi-billion dollar project will be entirely funded by passenger facility charges, bonds, and airport revenue—meaning no local tax dollars will be used to support the construction.

What This Means for Your Next Trip

In the immediate future, operations for American Airlines at Phoenix Sky Harbor remain completely unchanged. Travelers will continue using the existing terminal facilities for all current bookings. However, as the project progresses, this state-of-the-art facility is expected to bring expanded capacity, accommodate larger wide-body aircraft for greater international connectivity, and provide an elevated, modern passenger experience.

Alongside the future West Terminal, Sky Harbor is also moving forward with other improvements, including ongoing upgrades to baggage systems and passenger infrastructure in Terminal 4, ensuring the airport continues to meet the demands of a rapidly growing region.
